Perceived Family Relationships Associated with Coming Out of Mormon Male HomosexualsBenson, Brad 01 May 2001 (has links)
This study is one of the first to include data from both male homosexuals and their family members to investigate disclosure of sexual orientation. Being homosexual in U.S. society can be particularly traumatic for males because strong pressures oppose the violation of masculine gender norms. Being homosexual and Mormon has unique complications. Reactions from the Mormon community toward individuals of homosexual orientation is defined by prevailing attitudes toward homosexuality, which are largely based on existing theories of etiology, attribution of etiology, and the religious and cultural beliefs extant in the community. The role of family relationships in the coming out process for Mormon male homosexuals contributed important information towards understanding their development.
As a particular example of families facing homosexuality, this qualitative study explored family characteristics reported by a sample of male homosexuals who were raised in Mormon families. Relying on reports from both homosexual males and their family members, these data inform how the coming out process is influenced by, and influences, family relationships, and expand knowledge about how family relations and culture influence development.
Findings showed that attitudes prevalent within family, church, and community influenced Mormon male homosexuals' decisions to come out. Religious influences on Mormon homosexuals and their family members had an inhibitory effect on the disclosure of sexual orientation and subsequent support and communication within family relationships. Expectations of negative response increased silence among Mormon male homosexuals about their sexual orientation and resulted in alienation from both church and family.
Mormon male homosexuals most wanted their family members to accept them and withhold judgment. They hoped for increased dialogue and understanding. Parents were typically distressed by the disclosure, with fathers having a stronger reaction than mothers. Relationships were strained in terms of family contact and communication. Family members who made efforts to gain information and understand the homosexual son were perceived as more supportive. Implications of how families and Church leaders can insulate the homosexual son from adverse social response and provide needed support are discussed.

Previous issue date: 2017-09-12 / Trata-se de uma pesquisa exploratória no âmbito da violência da/na escola contra a família homoparental de abordagem, majoritariamente, qualitativa. O objetivo é apreender o que dizem pais e mães homossexuais sobre as relações estabelecidas com funcionários, docentes e discentes das escolas de seus filhos/as; suas expectativas e avaliações gerais sobre as instituições são igualmente apreendidas. A revisão bibliográfica resultou em 54 obras: 35 artigos; sete pesquisas em âmbito nacional; seis dissertações; quatro livros e duas teses. As fontes são entrevistas semiestruturadas, realizadas com três mães e sete pais- representantes de dez famílias homoparentais das regiões Sudeste e Centro-Oeste. Além das entrevistas, aplicou-se um instrumento denominado Ficha de Identificação que possibilitou dados socioeconômicos sobre os sujeitos. A coleta dos dados foi amparada por autores como Thompson (1992), Woods (1999) e Bourdieu (1999), em triangulação com os autores da revisão bibliográfica focada na temática Família Homoparental. A análise dos dados foi realizada por meio de uma aproximação à Análise de Conteúdo (BARDIN, 1977). A partir de Núcleos Informativos produzidos com as entrevistas, temos os seguintes resultados: 60% dos sujeitos afirmam não ter sofrido homofobia devido à homoparentalidade por parte de funcionários escolares. Todavia, identificamos situações de preconceito por uma criança portar necessidades especiais e um caso de bullying. Em 40% dos relatos encontramos as seguintes formas de violência: omissão de responsabilidade face possíveis casos de homofobia; inadmissão sobre a homoparentalidade em situações cadastrais; acusação da homoparentalidade como fator negativo na vivência de filhos em ambiente escolar. No que diz respeito à relação com docentes, 80% não evidenciou situações de preconceito, diferentemente de 20% expostos a violência como discordância sobre a homoparentalidade, ofensas devido à expressão sexual e rejeição em abordar a temática Família Homoparental em sala de aula. 70% não relatou violência cometida por amigos de escola. Já 20% sim, por razões como racismo e bullying homofóbico devido a um sobrenome e 10% sofreu violência por meio da expressão “sapatonas”. As expectativas e avaliações gerais dos/das participantes apontam a necessidade de diálogo sobre a Família Homoparental dentro das escolas. Em suma, existem tensões entre aceitação e discriminação para com a homoparentalidade em ambiente escolar, o que constata a realidade do preconceito ainda vigente sobre essa temática / It is an exploratory research in the scope of violence of/at school against the homoparental family of approach, mainly, qualitative. The objective of this research is to understand what homosexual parents say about the relationships established with employees, teachers and students in their children's schools; their expectations and general assessments of institutions are equally apprehended. The bibliographic review resulted in 54 works: 35 articles; seven national surveys; six dissertations; four books and two theses. The sources are semi-structured interviews, carried out with three mothers and seven fathers - representatives of ten homoparental families from the southeastern and center-western regions. In addition to the interviews, an instrument called Identification Card was applied to collect socioeconomic data of the subjects. The data collection was supported by authors such as Thompson (1992), Woods (1999) and Bourdieu (1999), in triangulation with the authors of the bibliographical review focused on the theme Homoparental Family. Data analysis was performed by means of a Content Analysis approach (BARDIN, 1977). From the Information Centers produced with the interviews, we have the following results: 60% of the subjects affirmed that they did not suffer homophobia due to homoparentality by school officials. However, we identified situations of prejudice agaisnt a child with special needs and a case of bullying. In 40% of the reports we found the following forms of violence: omission of responsibility against possible cases of homophobia; inadmissibility of homoparentality in registration situations; accusation of homoparentality as a negative factor in the experience of children in school environment. Regarding the relationship with teachers, 80% did not show situations of prejudice, differently from 20% exposed to violence such as disagreement about homoparentality, offenses due to sexual expression and rejection in addressing the Homoparental Family in the classroom. 70% did not report violence committed by school friends, but 20% suffered violence for reasons such as racism and homophobic bullying due to a surname and 10% were called "dykes". The expectations and general evaluations of the participants point to the need for dialogue on the Homoparental Family within the schools. In short, there are tensions between acceptance and discrimination towards homoparentality in the school environment, which confirms the reality of prejudice still prevailing on this theme.

O presente trabalho, Contextos Contemporâneos - Homossexuais, Cultura e Mídia, tem por propósito focalizar discussões sociais, com estudos voltados para a área de comunicação e cultura, sobre a percepção dos homossexuais ao segmento de mercado cujo aporte nas mídias de massa aponta para uma inserção cada vez maior no número de personagens homossexuais nas telenovelas. Para o desenvolvimento do tema, escolhemos em nossa abordagem o uso dos termos - homossexual feminino e masculino, assim como lésbica e gay, com destaque para o último em algumas generalizações, dentro do que denominaremos comunidade homossexual. Para tanto, fizemos um levantamento dos estudos sobre sexualidade, pondo em destaque o espaço psicossocial destinado a eles. Com o intento de esclarecer os meandros antecedentes à homossexualidade, sua identidade cultural e a tensão gerada pela educação do homem versus a da mulher, refletimos sobre a repressão do corpo e a relação entre cultura - poder e comunidade. Visto que a sexualidade contemporânea juntamente com as questões do corpo, da moda e identidade está permeada por influências midiáticas, abordamos o consumo de um modo geral e a Indústria Cultural, em específico, sempre questionando como os homossexuais se percebem no mercado direcionado a este segmento dentro das mídias. Como nosso intuito era abordar a percepção dos mesmos sobre esta representação, fizemos uma breve incursão sobre a história do cinema até chegar à televisão e nela destacamos a telenovela visto que, nas entrevistas realizadas na etapa da pesquisa empírica, esta foi uma das referências mais lembradas. Posto que é nesta que a comunidade homossexual possui maior visibilidade; também é ela a grande influenciadora no consumismo. No levantamento junto às lésbicas e gays entrevistados sobre seus entendimentos a respeito de estereótipos e identidade, os homossexuais falam sobre a influência e repercussão de personagens gays na TV, o quê consideram positivo e negativo. A partir de suas respostas, consideramos seus posicionamentos, sempre analisados à luz do repertório teórico utilizado no decorrer do trabalho. / The present work, Contemporary Contexts - Homosexuals, Culture and Media, is intended to focus on social discussions, with studies aimed at the area of communication and culture on the perception of the gay market segment whose contribution in the mass media points to an increasing insertion of gay characters in soap operas. To develop the theme, we have chosen in our approach the use of terms - male and female homosexual, as well as lesbian and gay, with emphasis on the latter in some generalizations, within what we call the gay community. In order to do so, we have surveyed the studies on sexuality, highlighting the psychosocial space for them. With the intent to clarify the intricate history of homosexuality, its cultural identity and the tension generated by the education of man versus the woman, we have reflected on the repression of the body and the relationship between culture - power and community. Since the contemporary sexuality, together with issues of body, fashion and identity is pervaded by media influences, our approach is to consumption in general and the Culture Industry, in particular, always questioning how the homosexuals perceive themselves within their segment market created by the media. As our intent was to address to their perception on this representation, we made a brief incursion into the history of cinema up to the TV, highlighting the soap opera due to the fact that in interviews conducted in the stage of empirical research, this was one of the most remembered. Once stated that it is in the soap opera that the homosexual community has greater visibility, it is also a great influence on consumerism. Lesbians and gays, when interviewed about their understandings on the homosexual identity and stereotypes, talked about the influence and impact of gay characters on TV, considered by them a positive and negative fact. From their answers, we considered their positions, always examined in the light of the theoretical repertoire used during this framework.

Homosexual Reproduction : An evaluation of the concept of homosexual reproduction in female leadership rolesBashir, Ahmed, Changufu, Peter January 2021 (has links)
In the last few years, the world has seen a relative increase in female leadership in different areas such as political space and the corporate world. This rise has a significant impact on how these female leaders reproduce future leaders of their organizations. This study explores the concept of homosexual reproduction in female leadership roles through their interaction with fellow females in corporate settings. Furthermore, the study was used to determine the factors that prevent homosexual reproduction among female leaders. The study's strategy used a qualitative methodology supported by an inductive approach, empirically with semi-structured interviews to collect data from six experienced female leaders in Sweden and Zambia. Empirical data were analyzed using qualitative analysis of content. The interviews indicate that homosexual reproduction was not present in the female leadership, as most female leaders valued the skills, competency, and qualification. The result also suggests three factors that prevented homosexual reproduction in female leadership roles: competency and qualifications, job profiles, and home and family responsibilities. Female leaders were efficient in their roles because they focused on attaining organizational objectives when thinking about future leaders. The empirical data revealed differences in the barriers that prevented homosexual reproduction in Sweden and Zambia. In Zambia, all the barriers were manifest in the female leaders, while in Sweden, it was only the competency and qualifications aspect.

This reduced level of coping skills may be a result of increased responsibilities, demands, and stressors associated with choosing a homosexual lifestyle.

<p> The subject of this thesis is Paul's statements about homosexual behaviour in Romans 1:26-27. The thesis has a two-fold focus. First, it is concerned with the interpretation of Paul's words in the light of their historical context, using the methods of traditional historical criticism. Second, it attempts to evaluate the impact of recent debates in Christian churches about the ethics of homosexual behaviour on the interpretation of this text.</p><p>The differing interpretations of John Boswell and Richard Hays are treated as paradigmatic of recent debates over the text In the light of Boswell's and Hays' interpretations this thesis argues that Paul's words in Rom. 1:26-27 do a negative evaluation of all hormosexual behaviour, that Paul objected to homosexual behaviour because he believed it violated God's will for human life, that the objection was fundamentally gender-based, condemning sexual relations between persons of the same gender as "against nature." Furthermore, Paul's claim that homosexual behaviour was an expression of passions and desires is stressed, and it is argued that Paul believed, with other Jews, that homosexual behaviour was a vice characteristic of Gentile culture.</p> <p> The thesis begins with an introductory discussion of the interpretations of John Boswell and Richard Hays and an overview of methodological issues. Following this, Chapter One deals with the modern context in which interpretation of Rom. 1:26-27 takes place, focusing on theories about homosexuality and Christian responses.
