Background: Every day Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual (LGBT-persons [LGBT]) meet difficulties in life. Within healthcare they face discrimination and difficulties. The development of LGBT in society is on the rise, but still persons who don't fit the sexuality norm struggles to be accepted. Aim: The aim was to discover if nurses values effect on the meeting with persons who don't fit the sexuality norm. Method: This paper is a literature review which is based on nine quantitative articles. All the articles were analyzed by the authors looking for similarities and differences. Results: The result of the literature review was that the nurse's values do effect on their attitudes toward LGBT-persons. The result showed that nurses who had previous experience in LGBT-persons was more accepting in their meeting. It also shows that the nurse's ethnicity and religious values had effect on their attitude toward LGBT-persons. Overall majority weighs toward difficulties in the meeting with persons who don't fit the sexuality norm. Subcategories became accepting in the meeting, difficulties in the meeting, ethnicities and accepting and previous experience with LGBT-persons. Conclusion: Nurses today is more accepting in the meeting with LGBT-persons than they were 10 years ago. Still persons who don't fit the sexuality norm is feeling discriminated because of their sexuality. Nurses need more knowledge about how they can make LGBT-persons feel more accepted in their meeting. More research about LGBT-persons in healthcare is needed.

Homophobia in Registered Nurses

Berry, Matthew 01 January 2018 (has links)
Homophobia plays a significant role in the treatment of individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). The purpose of this study is to explore the presence of these types of negative attitudes as they present themselves in the nursing workforce. 520 registered nurses were contacted via email to partake in a survey assessing homophobic attitudes and perceptions regarding nursing care of LGBT persons. A total of 27 registered nurses responded and the resulting data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. A majority of registered nurses were female (89.3%), greater than 40 years of age (75%), white (75%), heterosexual (96.4%), and Christian (67.9%) with a Bachelor’s degree or less (57.1%). Homophobia scores averaged 27 on a scale from 12-60, higher scores translating to greater homophobia levels. This value is on the lower end of the scale, which interprets to lower levels of homophobia among the participants. While some of these scores did show the existence of negative attitudes toward LGBT individuals among participants, further investigation is needed with a larger, more representative sample. As a result, it is difficult to determine whether LGBT relations are improving with registered nurses.

The aim of the study is to explain the political and ideological positions sustained by the Jornal do Nuances, a communication medium produced, since 1998, by a NGO devoted to the defense of the human rights for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transvestites, and transsexuals living in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The study was oriented by the theory of the alternative/radical media. It was concluded that the Jornal do Nuances expresses the political impasses existing in the Brazilian homosexual movement as a whole, which are a result of the growing visibility achieved by the above mentioned individuals. With its polemical themes and political positions, the referred journal celebrates and defends the “bicha bafona” at the expenses of the “middle class gay”.

SYPHILIS AND AIDS: HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL COMPARISONS

Parsonson, Ian Malcolm, kimg@deakin.edu.au January 1992 (has links)
Drawing on the literatures of history, sociology, epidemiology, and microbiology, this thesis compares syphillis with human immunodeficiency virus, with special reference to the social and historical factors likely to be relevant to the control or eradication of acquired imune dificiency syndrom (AIDS). The sudden appearance of a new disease causing suffering and death in a community, engenders apprehension and fear which is often manifested as hysteria against, and vilification of, those who have the disease. This fear is greatly increased should the disease be sexually-transmitted. Syphilis in a venereal form, occured in Europe toward the end of the 15th Century. Initially it was an acute, fulminating disease which rapidly spread through Europe and Asia. Attempts to control the disease have gone through periods of either partial successes or massive failures and have ended in frustration for the authorities. When the syndrome of acquired immune deficiency (AIDS) was first reported, it was seen in Western countries in homosexual men. However, as non-homosexual community members and children became infected, it became apparent to authorities that a pandemic was accurring. Within a few years, the disease was identified worldwide. Isolation of the virus (HIV-1), and development of test for detection of carriers, plus restoration of clean blood and blood-product supplies, have reassured the community to some extent. The history of syphilis shows that neither the epidemiological medical, nor the economic political approaches to disease control work, although there are positive aspects resulting from both. It is social responses that will offer the most hope in the long term for the control of AIDS and other sexually-transmitted diseases.

Swart, Jacobus Abraham 25 August 2008 (has links)
ENGLISH Worldwide homosexuality currently forms one of the most challenging and contentious issues. Churches are struggling with questions about homosexual marriage, the ordination of homosexual clergy and office-bearers as well as the acceptability of acting on a homosexual orientation. The aim of this research is to shed light on the different problem areas that surrounds homosexuality and show why it is so topical. The most important insights about homosexuality from history as well as modern science, are also discussed. The homosexuality debate centres around the question: How should one interpret the Bible? This study confirms that the hermeneutical key an exegete uses to unlock texts like those in Leviticus determines his or her understanding of these texts. The exegetical and hermeneutical analysis of these texts makes it clear that neither Leviticus 18:22 nor Leviticus 20:13 can simply be applied directly in the current theological debate. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Biblical and Religious Studies / unrestricted

”It is fine, as long as they stay the hell away from me!” : This is a qualitative questionnaire upper secondary youth’s thoughts and attitudes towards homosexuality.

Andersson, Anna, Eriksson, Frida January 2009 (has links)

/
In this study we want to illustrate how youth thinks and feels about homosexuality. Studying just this has been shown to be very important, to show youth and society how prejudice and bad attitudes against the subject can produce psychological problems among youth with deviating sexualities. Homosexuality is a very large area of study. We have chosen to focus our study on the knowledge-background, dissertations, scientific articles, reports, and different organisation’s information to try and completely cover the subject we have chosen. We made a qualitative questionnaire, which we then handed out to tree different classes in the upper secondary school for answering. Through our results, which we concluded based on the psychosocial theories and scientific studies earlier made in this area, we could see that females in general had a more positive approach to homosexuality than males. It also showed that males/females who could relate to, or knew a homosexual individual had a bigger understanding and where more tolerating to it.
