The sample was composed of 30 patients who would have a surgery (8 men and 22 women) aged from 18 to 80 years. The tools used to collect the data were the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BDI), the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) and the Adult Stress Symptoms Inventory of Lipp (ISSL). The results show that the participants showed a decrease in anxiety, depression and stress over the pre-surgery period compared to the post-surgery period without any psychotherapy intervention made. However, the participants who didn t show hopeless in the pre-surgery period ended up showing it in the after-surgery period. The results also showed that among the items correlated with anxiety, depression, hopeless and stress only the marital status and time between the diagnosis and the surgery showed important correlation. The conclusion is that the surgery itself is able to lead to important emotional reactions and, because of that, their analysis, intervention and control are needed in patients with surgery s indication.

Factors associated with adolescent suicidal gestures

Liss, Heidi Jennifer 01 January 2003 (has links)
Incidence of suicide has been shown to increase dramatically during adolescence. Despite an established pattern of depression and hopelessness leading to suicide in adults, no such pattern emerges in the adolescent literature. Recent investigations suggest that impulsivity may play a key role in adolescent suicide attempts. This study examined the role of impulsivity in adolescent suicidal gestures, as well as the relationships among demographic variables, anger expression, impulsivity, and suicidal behavior. A total of 100 participants (ages 11-17; 71 females and 29 males) were recruited from 2 inpatient crisis centers for children. The Children's Depression Inventory, Hopelessness Scale for Children, Adolescent Behavior Checklist, Pediatric Anger Expression Scale, and Suicide Intent Scale were administered to inpatients, and demographic information was obtained (age, gender, ethnicity, income, and structure of family). It was hypothesized that patterns of depression, anger, hopelessness, and impulsivity would vary by age, gender, ethnicity, and suicidality (e.g., suicidal gesture vs. no gesture). The large majority of hypotheses were not supported. Results are explained in terms of alternative theories for the role of impulsivity in adolescent suicidal gestures.

Přeléčování nevyléčitelně nemocných v terminální fázi nemoci jako etický a ekonomický problém současné společnosti / Ethical dilemma and economic aspects of overtreating terminally ill patients in current society

Studnička, Martin January 2016 (has links)
Ethical dilema and economic aspects of overtreating terminally ill patients in current society Abstract The aim of this thesis is to outline problems of over-treating terminally ill patients in the final stage of their illness in current society in context of ethics, bioethics and economic factors. Based on medical, ethical and economic texts, we will try to analyse if current ethical principles, law standards and economic level of development of current society ensures enough such a medical care to each and every individual in line with human dignity. Do the health workers who treat terminally ill patients realize their power as well as powerlessness when it comes to fighting life and death? What makes them to start and continue such therapy that does not bring any benefit to the patient and what is the purpose to this? Is it possible to die with dignity? Can death be more meaningful in comparison to life? The first part of this thesis will focus on the theoretical point of view of these problems. The second part of this thesis will try to analyse the problems with the help of sociological research among the general population, but as well as among health workers who stand in front of ethical and economical challenges in each and every day. Such challenges can lead to overtreatment. Is there awareness...
