The causes and consequences of police stress has received considerable research interest. Reversal theory postulates some individuals may inherently require higher (Le. paratelic) arousal levels, compared with those seeking lower (Le. telic) arousal levels. This present study investigated: (i) psychological problems experienced between British police officers, special (voluntary) police and civilian support staff; (ii) telic and paratelic dominance; (iii) use of humour; (iv) dimensions of police humour; and (v) predictors of police psychological problems, telic dominance and humour use. A mixed, cross-sectional survey design was employed. Questionnaires were sent to all police officers, support staff and specials (N = 373) within one division of a provincial police service. Participants completed the following measures: (i) Coping Humour Scale (CHS); (ii) Multi-dimensional Sense of Humour Scale (MSHS); (iii) Telic Dominance Scale (TDS); and (v) Employee Assistance Program Inventory (EAPI). Questionnaires were returned from 191 participants (51% response rate). For overall CHS and MSHS scores, no significant differences between groups were found; although police gender differences were significant. MSHS police dimensions deviated from previous samples. Overall TDS scores were significantly higher for specials. For all three groups, EAPI subscale scores were normative, but with significantly higher substance use reported by police. Police EAPI scores were generally significantly higher, indicative of greater psychological difficulties. Predictors of police psychological problems, TDS, CHS and MSHS scores are reported. These results suggest that police may have a paratelic dominance, in which humour provides a valuable and adaptive mechanism for pOlice stress. Clinical implications are discussed in light of these results.

The paper consists of a Content, Introduction, three chapters (two of them are theoretical, and the last chapter is a practical one), then follows Conclusions, References, Summary and Appendix containing the remnant examples and a piece of information about the author of the novels. In the first chapter the definitions of humour itself and its cultural and linguistic aspects are being discussed. Since humour is rather elusive as a theoretical concept we are going to mention only the definitions or theories that are related to the research. As humour is often culturally specific it nearly always contains some piece of sociocultural information shared between the sender and the recipient. Unless the recipient is aware of it, the joke fails to perform its function. The relevance of E. Nida’s theory of dynamic equivalence to the translation of humour and other translation problems such as cultural and linguistic ones are being analyzed in the second chapter. The problem of this type of translation is that of recasting the humorous effect. Eugene Nida’s theory of dynamic equivalence requires analysing the source language text and then restructuring it before transferring it to the target language in such a way that will make a perfect sense in the target language. This multi-media art project investigates the notion of Cook Islands humour, and subsequently place, through the context of the religious pageant Nuku. This pageant has been practiced annually in the Cook Islands for over one hundred and sixty years. While it is not a pageant based on humour, I suggest, through experience and research, that many of the characteristics of Cook Islands humour are revealed in Nuku. The aim of this project is not to recreate the narrative set out in the Nuku pageant but to use this event to explore ways to visually express the humour of the Cook Islands. After researching and experimenting in two dimensional mediums, my emphasis changed to experimenting with three dimensional mediums, incorporating materials that have connotative meanings in Cook Islands society.
