A study of knowledge, attitudes and behaviour with regard to food safety, in the Welsh hospitality and catering industry

Coleman, Philip Dennis January 2000 (has links)
Foodborne illnesses respresent a serious threat to health. The World Health Organisation (2000) recently passed a Resolution stating that "... foodborne illness associated with microbial pathogens, biotoxins and chemical contaminants in food present a serious threat to the health of millions of people in the world (p.1)". Overall notifications of foodborne illness and food poisoning have risen significantly and many outbreaks have been associated with the food industry. The Hospitality and Catering industry is of special concern because of it's size, diversity, individual characteristics, and direct interface with customers. This thesis focuses upon the Hospitality and Catering industry in Wales, a largely unexplored area of research. It applies an investigate approach to issues relating to the management and implementation of food safety in the industry across a range of industry sectors to be found in the Principality. Information was gathered by utlising a range of secondary and primary sources. Data collection instruments included questionnaires, structured interviews, and audit checklists and observations. These were administered by way of three discrete but interlinked primary data collection investigations. Both quantitative and qualitative data were obtained. Participating industry personnel included proprietors, managers and food handlers. Via a literature review, the key issues of knowledge, attitudes and behaviour related to food safety are discussed and evaluated within the contexts of the inherent characteristics of the Hospitality and Catering industry and food safety legislation. There three investigations are presented individually and the findings are consolidated in a synoptic discussion in relation to the Aims of the thesis. The findings indicated that within the Welsh Hospitality and Catering industry levels of knowledge and attitudes with regard to food safety and food safety legislation were variable and in some instances, unsatisfactory. In many instances, intentions to act in a positive manner towards the implementation of food safety precautions were not reflected in actual behaviour. It was further found that in establishments of all sizes and ownership categories, food handling practices were variable and in many cases, unsafe. Recommendations are made based upon the results obtained and discussed in this thesis.

Specialist clinical pharmacy services in the care of patients with psychiatric illness: an assessment of the contribution to optimal health outcomes and implications for pharmacy practice

Alderman, Christopher P January 2009 (has links)
Mental illnesses are very common. Those who are affected experience significant disadvantages that are evident in terms of poorer health outcomes, higher rates of premature death and enduring disability, socioeconomic disadvantage and poor quality of life. People with mental illness are significant users of health services, having frequent and lengthy hospitalisations and requiring extensive medication therapy. Polypharmacy is common amongst those with psychiatric illnesses, and the drugs that are used are often of low therapeutic index and with considerable potential to cause significant medication-related problems. This thesis explores the prevalence, nature and impact of medication-related problems that affect people with serious psychiatric illnesses, and examines the ways in which specialist pharmacy practitioners can assist with strategies to address these.

El texto completo de este trabajo no está disponible en el Repositorio Académico UPC por restricciones de la casa editorial donde ha sido publicado. / Objective: This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of leptospirosis among febrile patients with a suspicious clinical diagnosis of dengue fever in northern Peru. Results: A total of 276 serum samples from patients with acute febrile illness (AFI) and suspected diagnosis for dengue virus (DENV) were analyzed. We identified an etiological agent in 121 (47.5%) patients, DENV was detected in 30.4% of the cases, leptospirosis in 11.2% and co-infection by both pathogens was observed in 5.9% of the patients. In this study the most common clinical symptoms reported by the patients were: headache 89.1%, myalgias 86.9% and arthralgias 82.9%. No differences in symptomatology was observed among the different study groups. / National Research Foundation of Korea / Revisión por pares

Academic achievement factors in children with chronic illness: A report based on the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, from the Study of Early Child Care

Zadeh, Sheava T. 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The key question not addressed by the hierarchical model (Shavelson et al., 1976) is whether academic self-concept is reflected in relations with non-academic self-concept components (i.e. a between-network issue). The present study investigated the significance of physical self-concept, as a proposed mediator variable, to assess the relationship between anxiety/depression and school absence in children with chronic illness, which was hypothesized as Model A. Additionally, this research examined proposed mediator of absence in order to assess the relationship between physical self-concept and academic achievement, after controlling for academic self-concept, which was hypothesized as Model B. This study included participants from a comprehensive database of the Study of Early Child Care (SECC), by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). This study will examine the health status, psychosocial factors, attendance, and academic functioning of children in the sixth grade at the time of data collection. Findings, related to Model A, suggest that when children, regardless of whether or not they are chronically ill, experience higher degrees of anxiety/depression, they are more likely to report having higher levels of negative physical self-concept and higher levels of school absence. Findings for Model B suggested that once academic self-concept was controlled, physical self-concept, while statistically significant, accounted for little actual variance in the number of days a student was absent from school. This finding was true among all students as well as those who were not chronically ill . Specifically, this finding did not hold true for chronically ill students.
