Unwrapping Giftedness: How Mothers of Elementary School-aged Children Assessed as Intellectually Gifted Make Meaning of the Gifted Construct and Participate in Educational Decision Making

Orders, Shari A. 12 April 2012 (has links)
This qualitative study was designed to explore the experiences and perceptions of a group of mothers whose elementary school-aged children met the criteria for intellectual giftedness in an Ontario school board. Guided by Beach and Mitchell’s image theory and Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, the study sought to identify (a) the meanings mothers ascribed to the concept of giftedness, (b) their experiences of the assessment, identification and placement process, and (c) the factors deemed important to educational decision making. A postpositivist orientation and rigorous qualitative research methods were employed. Data were collected in two phases: an internet-based survey comprised of demographic items and open ended questions, followed by in-depth interviews with five purposefully selected participants. Resultant data from 45 surveys and 15 interviews were coded and organized according to the survey questions and central elements of the theoretical framework. Eight research findings revealed that the experience of mothering gifted children was complex, challenging, emotional, and at times, isolating. Many mothers struggled with the concept of giftedness and how it pertained to their children. As mothers navigated the assessment, identification and placement process, the lack of accessible, timely, and consistent information from the school board posed a considerable barrier, prompting many to reach out to other parents of gifted children for information and support. Factors deemed important to decision making about educational placement included maternal perceptions related to the various options, child specific and practical considerations, and the attainability of specialized gifted programming. Educational decision making was identified as the most difficult aspect of the maternal experience. Given that the study participants were unusually well educated and well resourced, the findings were particularly revealing. The study findings add to a small but growing body of research that furthers our understanding of image theory in real life decision making. In addition, the findings give voice to the experience of mothering children identified as gifted, thus making a valuable and original contribution to the literature.

A imagem explícita: a materialidade do cinema sob o olhar da fotografia / -

Andréa Carla Scansani 21 March 2018 (has links)
This work aims to approach cinematography within film studies as a way to broaden our perspectives on cinema image. Starting from making explicit some of its physical aspects and their potential to reverberate a series of questions about the immaterial dimension of its body, we trace a heterogeneous path through the domains of philosophy, image and cinema theory in order to develop a thought based on the conjugation of knowledge that constitutes the photographic gaze. Our emphasis is on the cinematographic act and the reciprocal relations of its elements, meaning to say, the moment in which gestures [human and technical] are sheltered by the camera and build the layers of the filmic body, its flesh and blood.

[en] ONEILYRICAL IMAGINISM: A CARTOGRAPHY CROSSING LANDSCAPES / [pt] IMAGINISMO ONILÍRICO: UMA CARTOGRAFIA PELA PAISAGEM DE MUNDOS

CHARLES PHILIPPE JACQUARD 20 August 2018 (has links)
According to groups of thought that announce the dystopic condition promoted by what has been called integrated global capitalism, the notion of Humanism plunges into a crisis. Guided by satellite to navigate on digital maps, it is revealed that this historical route led us to a dead-end in a supposed capitalist realism. This is the labyrinthic scenario of a society of weariness, in which governmental powers articulated by capital infiltrate the fragile division between culture and nature. Sleep, according to researcher Jonathan Crary, symbolizes the last frontier between the most up-to- date versions of an objective technocracy that seizes bodies to anesthetize the sensory and therefore normalize lifestyles from the reorganization of perception. In the wake, therefore, of answers about what creates worlds - and their consequent ways of inhabiting it - and about the emergence of letting out other possible outcomes, this dissertation focuses on the dream experience resignified as an aesthetic-political gesture. Can the dream act as a mediation - or as a manifestation - in a dispute of imaginaries be capable of promoting a sympoietic way of life? It is t rough the re-enchantment of the world, from a dream perspective – here in a broad and common sense – that this work will be conducted, aiming at a topographic exploration in the attempt to constitute another landscape of the world.

Γιαπαλάκη, Σοφία 13 March 2009 (has links)
Electroenchephalography (EEG) and Magnetoenchephalophy (MEG) are common non invansive methods for studying the function of the human brain. Considering that the data of the generated electric potential (Electroencephalogram) and the magnetic field (Magnetoenchephalogram), takes place on or in the surrounding the head, the entire head, including the skin, the bones, the cerebrospinal fluid and the cerebral, regions which are characterizing by different electric conductivity are including. For this model, the direct Bioelectromagnetism problem is solved in both spherical and ellipsoidal geometry. Specifically, the leading terms of the electric potential in the exterior of the conductor and everywhere in the interior, as well as the leading quadrupolic term of the multipole expansion of the exterior magnetic induction field in the ellipsoidal geometry, are obtained. The reduction of the the ellipsoidal results to the corresponding spherical case, which has brought up useful conclusions concerning these two geometrical models, is also presented. The direct EEG problem is described, for the case where the entire cerebral is considered as a spherical conductor, which surrounds a fluid spherical region of different conductivity. When the two spherical regions are concentric, the problem is solved with the spherical geometry, but when these are eccentric the problem is solved with the bispherical geometry. Finally, the exact and complete analytic solution for the forward EEG problem is produced by the Image Theory for the homogeneous spherical conductor and is elaborated graphically. In particular, some electric potential distributions are produced on the surface of the spherical brain, where the equipotential curves are represented by circles. Considering these distributions, a parametric analysis of the position and the orientation o the moment dipole is accomplished for the current dipole that has considered in this thesis. Consequently, when the source is near the surface, the orientation of the moment is directed vertically to the zero equipotential circle to the increase potential, since the position vector of the source tends to become vertical to the maximum equipotential curves. The existence of special position and orientation of the source, for which the contribution in the external magnetic field is zero - and for the spherical case, where the position and the orientation of the sources are parallel - corresponds to parallel equipotential curves.
