Sharing a living room: Empathy, reverie and connectionMcVey, Lynn 25 February 2021 (has links)
No / This paper examines what the originally psychoanalytic concept of reverie can add to non-psychoanalytic practitioners’ understandings of empathy. It uses case material from a study into UK therapists’ experiences of reverie, which centres on a single moment in a session, when an image of her own living room flashed suddenly through a therapist’s mind. Reverie – a capacity to contain the other’s unprocessed emotional experiencing - can offer a magnifying lens through which to view some forms of empathy, revealing the relational, embodied and imaginative materials from which they are constructed. The paper links shared experiencing like that found in reverie with simulative accounts of empathy, but does not claim this enables us to experience exactly what the other feels; rather, when approached sensitively, tentatively and with clients’ needs foremost, it can foster deep connection, enabling us, as it were, to enter others’ inner worlds – perhaps even their living rooms - and make ourselves at home there. Finally, practical ways to work empathically with reverie are suggested, which may interest therapists from a range of modalities, including humanistic approaches.

The predictive moment: reverie, connection and predictive processingMcVey, Lynn, Nolan, G., Lees, J. 16 December 2020 (has links)
Yes / According to the theory of predictive processing, understanding in the present involves non-consciously representing the immediate future, based on probabilistic inference shaped by learning from the past. This paper suggests links between this neuroscientific theory and the psychoanalytic concept of reverie–an empathic, containing attentional state–and considers implications for the ways therapists intuit implicit material in their clients. Using findings from a study about therapists’ experiences of this state, we propose that reverie can offer practitioners from diverse theoretical s a means to enter the predictive moment deeply, making use of its subtle contents to connect with clients.

Reflective - verbal language and reverie in a qualitative interviewMcVey, Lynn, Lees, J., Nolan, G. 16 December 2020 (has links)
Yes / in contrast to dominant approaches to therapy research that look at
outcomes and focus on large samples, another primary strand of research
considers microphenomenal processes and focuses on small samples. This paper
contributes to the latter genre in regard to the implicit impact of language.
this paper aims to apply relational psychotherapeutic thinking about empathic
dialogue, specifically the concepts of reflective-verbal language and reverie, to
qualitative interviewing. Methodology: an example from a small-scale study
about emotionally-evocative language is reviewed in detail, focusing on the
interviewer’s phenomenological experience of her conversation with a participant
in a qualitative interview. Findings: the authors argue that the interviewer’s
reflexive awareness of her reveries and the reflective-verbal nature of the research
dialogue, gave her an alternative perspective on the participant’s (and her own)
experience. Implications: the paper highlights the value within research and
practice of maintaining awareness of language at a microphenomenal level, using
techniques based on the principles of psychological therapy.

Practitioner-based research and qualitative interviewing: Using therapeutic skills to enrich research in counselling and psychotherapyMcVey, Lynn, Lees, J., Nolan, G. 16 December 2020 (has links)
Yes / The researcher's reflexive use of self forms part of a well-established tradition in counselling and psychotherapy research. This paper reviews that tradition briefly, with particular reference to an approach known as 'practitioner-based research' that has developed from it. In this approach, researcher-practitioners use their therapeutic skills and judgement and thereby enrich their understanding of research participants, themselves and their relationship. The paper aims to contribute to the practitioner-based approach by showing how it can impact on data collection, using an example from a qualitative interview. Methodology: A moment of interaction between a participant and a therapy researcher in a qualitative interview is examined, framed within psychotherapeutic intersubjectivity theory. The researcher’s reflexive awareness of micro-aspects of the relationship with the participant is reviewed, captured in their language and the split-second daydreams or reveries that arose as they interacted. Findings: The authors argue that the approach enhanced this small-scale study by intensifying the researcher’s engagement with the participant and enriching her understanding of their relationship and the subject under investigation. Implications: The paper highlights the unique value and contribution that this approach offers to therapy research and practice.

[en] THE INCAPACITY TO PLAY IN PSYCHOANALYTIC CLINIC WITH CHILDREN / [pt] A INCAPACIDADE DE BRINCAR NA CLÍNICA PSICANALÍTICA COM CRIANÇASSYLVIA CARAM SOUZA DE PAULA 13 September 2017 (has links)
[en] In this dissertation we will discuss the children s inability to play observed in a clinic. Through Winnicott s work, we can reflect on the importance of playing for psychoanalysis and its relevance to healthy primitive emotional development. Parallel Wilfred Bion s work, we point out the similarities between thinking and playing as pre-symbolic capacities, developed from the relation with the environment in the beginnings of life, mainly by the functions denominated holding and rêverie. The importance of the analyst s place facing difficulties in the formation of the transitional space, from a sufficiently good analyst posture.

Previous issue date: 2014-03-28 / This dissertation proposes a study of the lyric from Gilberto Mendonça Teles and has
the goal of show the importance of image and imagination in the creative process of
his lyric below the point of view of phenomenology of Gaston Bachelard . For this
phenomenologist the poetic image is a new being of language that deeply enlightens
our conscience, making the literary creation one of the destinations of the word. This
makes the poet is seen as a special issuer, whom diction opens a future of language.
The poetic image is established as a kind of valve that releases the perception and
provides deep dazzle to the reader, for it is through the imagination that our
souvenirs are rebuilt in discontinuous and lacunar temporal movements, providing
us,through the work of art, the insertion in the creative moment of revival. The
necessary theoretical basis for this work was also based on studies of lyrical from
Octavio Paz, which deals with significant multiple faces of the poetic word. These
studies assumed a gloomy and unprecedented universe in which the unpredictable
meanings are established in the interstices between words. Thus, we seek to show
the poetic transcendence in lyric of Gilberto Mendonça Teles, from reverie and
expressive power of images that allow the poet a dilation of the semantics of the
words, so that they are able to reveal the essence of the lyric voice transformed into
language.
linguagem.

Previous issue date: 2015-02-26 / The proposal of this research is based on the understanding of the formation of poetic
Leodegária of Jesus, as well as his attempt of construction of the first verse with the support
of the family and the publication of two works: "Crown of lilies" and "Orchids". This research
also analyzes how the lyrical I in these two works develops the poetic steps having the
idealization for love through the paths of reverie and at the same time having the idea of
escape from suffering sweet through the poetic creation comprising, in turn, the dynamics of
duality that occurs between the terms: life and death, suffering and happiness coming to
Mystic aspect of love andsuffering that brings a collection of lyrical I poems known as
"Semana Santa", and having as theoretical support for the present analysis of this survey the
archetype of Northorp Frye and imaginary theory.
Esses

Previous issue date: 2010-09-09 / This study aimed to analyze the concepts and the functions of the library over time
and to verify how the production of truths operates in the field of education,
showing that the library, as a social product, is also pervaded by power relations
and, to understand the poetic dimension of knowing. It presents the formation of
the libraries, of the knowledge, of the truths, at different times: in the Renaissance,
in the antiquity, in the Classical Era and in the Modernity. To avoid the risk of
being lost in time and by the forgetfulness, brackets to house and preserve the
sayings that were written in clay, stone, metal, wood, leather, papyrus, parchment,
paper and virtual are presented in different historical period. It is also examined
the functioning of the school towards politically passive society (panoptic), for
which Foucault instigates the intellectual (the educator) to resist the prescribed
truths because they have expiration dates. And through language, it gives voice to
the library that has long been and is still denied to silence. The library is the space
of scientific and poetic knowledge (slope almost silenced by the theories applied in
the school). The library as a possibility of discovery has been a place devoid of
life. When it is asked whether the libraries, especially the public ones, contribute
to the formation of male and female readers, this study brought to light, a
discouraged affirmative, alias, a negative. Like in a tripod, the theoretical support
came primarily from the works of Bachelard, Chartier and Foucault.
poética do conhecer.
pele, papiro, pergaminho, papel e virtual.
quase silenciada pelas teorias aplicadas no âmbito escolar).

Previous issue date: 2013-09-25 / The main goal of our work was to undertake a study of the novel Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman, in order to exploit its potential discourse regarding the meeting of
the elements of the day and the night, which are corresponding, in Bachelard's beautiful metaphor, to the exercise of literary writing and the scientific activity.
Therefore, the theoretical framework that guides us consists primarily of the works of Mikhail Bakhtin - particularly the philosophical theory contained in Toward a
Philosophy of the Act (2010a) and his theory of aesthetics of the novel contained mainly in Questions of Literature and Aesthetics (2010b) - as well as the epistemological studies of Gaston Bachelard, especially the works The New
Scientific Spirit (1988), The Philosophy of No (1991) and The poetics of reverie (1988b). Reading these authors we intended to understand concepts we consider as
parallel, such as daydreaming and dreams, dialogism and philosophical epistemological plurality, dialectical pluralism; these concepts were vital so we could
consider our object as a meeting between the daytime and nighttime, a discourse that walks along the horizon during dusk and dawn. Thus, we list some elements of the work that we understand as essential for the analysis, as the way the main character was built, the explicit context of the work, how the scientific and philosophical plurality of time presents itself.
apresenta.
