Fontana, Mathias Pante January 2017 (has links)
The upper molars are the dental group that most receives endodontic treatments and presents great anatomical complexity of their root canal systems. The presence of a second mesiobuccal canal (MB2) is a common finding and its non-detection is related to a high failure rate in endodontic therapy. Recently, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been highlighted in the MB2 evaluation for its ability to provide detailed and three-dimensional information, and is considered the best imaging method for such investigation in vivo. Thus, the aim of this thesis was to investigate the prevalence and symmetry of the root canal numbers from the mesiobuccal root of first homologous upper molars, as well as to evaluate the use of CBCT image filters for that purpose. For the first objective, a research was developed with 264 patients having the first upper molar bilaterally. Symmetry was found in 78.79% patients, and the MB2 was bilaterally present in 67.42%. Out the total of 528 teeth evaluated, 78% presented the MB2, with no correlation with sex and age group (p > 0.05). For the second objective, 30 CBCT scans were evaluated with five different filters (Original, Smooth, Sharpen, Sharpen Mild, Angio Sharpen Low and Angio Sharpen High) in addition to the original images (none filter). All filters presented high levels of accuracy (> 83.3%), sensitivity (> 90%) and specificity (> 62%), with no statistical difference (p > 0.05). However, when the level of certainty was evaluated, Angio Sharpen High and Sharpen filters presented the worst results, with significant difference for Original images (p < 0.05). The results of the conducted studies allow us to conclude that the MB2 is a highly prevalent condition and its bilateral simmetry is frequent. The use of CBCT image filters did not influence the MB2 detection, however higher enhancement filters should be avoided because they reduce the certainty of the diagnosis.

Fissuration en modes mixtes dans le bois : diagnostic et évaluation des méthodes de renforcement local / Cracking in mixed mode in wood : diagnosis and evaluation of reinforcement methods

Sorin, Edouard 30 November 2018 (has links)
The purpose of reinforcing assemblies and structural elements inwood is to overcome the resistance limits of the material, by transferring greaterefforts in areas which can lead to premature cracking in structures. The reinforcementsused can be made of steel, composite materials or wood. Their hook can bemechanical (screwed bodies) or by adhesion (structural bonding like glued-in rodsfor example). In both cases, the transfer of solicitations remains poorly known, andthe effect of the beginning and the deflection of crack are not well apprehended. Inengineering techniques, the wood resistance in the reinforced area is neglected, whichis in line with the precautionary principle. Currently, the scientific investigations areinterested in the resistance of those kind of techniques without considering the interactionsbetween the quasi-brittle behavior of the wood and the reinforcementswhich govern the gain in mechanical performance. However, these solutions can leadto a failure caused by the progressive splitting of the wood and the anchor loss ofthe reinforcement. So it seems accurate to propose predictions of the short-termstrength for splitting of reinforced and unreinforced beams, which can be used tofurther exploration of the long-term failure mechanism. That is why, in this study, aglobal prediction model of the ultimate strength of structural components subjectedto splitting, reinforced and unreinforced ones, was developed. It considers the quasibrittlebehavior of the wood and crack propagation in mixed mode, using a mixinglaw established on the R-curves. The relevance of this modeling was then comparedto the current dimensioning methods of the Eurocodes 5, for notched beams, withexperimental campaigns conducted at different scales.

The comparison of different rapid maxillary expansion devices from periodontal tissue health and root resorption perspectives

Facciolo, Joseph 25 October 2017 (has links)
INTRODUCTION: Utilization of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is common for the correction of sagittal discrepancies in orthodontic treatment. RME appliances will transmit a compressive force to the periodontal support structures. This resultant force can lead to resorption of the dento-alveolar structures leading to unwanted dental movements. The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare changes from a periodontal and root resorption perspective by means of computer tomography with tooth-borne and bonded expanders. METHODS: The sample comprised of cone beam computed tomography and spiral CT images of 41 subjects, 12 to 17 years old, with unilateral or bilateral posterior crossbites. 20 subjects treated previously with a bonded expander and 21 with a banded expander. Pre and post-treatment images were digitized and landmarks were identified to measure buccal and lingual cortex thickness, alveolar height, root length and angulation by means of a computerized method. RESULTS: RME with banded and bonded expanders have similar effects from periodontal and root resorption perspectives. Changes include increasing thickness of lingual alveolar bone 0.2 to 0.7 mm, decreases in buccal bone width 0.1 to 0.5 mm; and decreases in alveolar height 0.1 to 0.9 mm and root length 0.3 to 1.0mm of each support teeth. CONCLUSIONS: RME with banded and bonded expanders exhibited similar changes post-expansion and these variables should not play a role in selection of the type of device.

Identification of LHC beam loss mechanism : a deterministic treatment of loss patterns / Identification des mécanismes de perte de faisceau au LHC : un traitement déterministe des structures de pertes

Marsili, Aurélien 21 November 2012 (has links)
CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the largest machine ever built, with a total circumference of 26.7 km; and it is the most powerful accelerator ever, both in beam energy and beam intensity. The main magnets are superconducting, keeping the particles into two counter circulating beams, which collide in four interaction points. CERN and the LHC will be described in chap. 1. The superconducting magnets of the LHC have to be protected against particle losses. Depending on the number of lost particles, the coils of the magnets will become normal conducting and/or will be damaged. To avoid these events a beam loss monitoring (BLM) system was installed to measure the particle loss rates. If the predefined safe thresholds of loss rates are exceeded, the beams are directed out of the accelerator ring towards the beam dump. The detectors of the BLM system are mainly ionization chambers located outside of the cryostats. In total, about 3500 ionisation chambers are installed. Further challenges include the high dynamical range of losses (chamber currents ranging between 2 pA and 1 mA). The BLM system will be further described in chap. 2. The subject of this thesis is to study the loss patterns and find the origin of the losses in a deterministic way, by comparing measured losses to well understood loss scenarios. This is done through a case study: different techniques were used on a restrained set of loss scenarios, as a proof of concept of the possibility to extract information from a loss profile. Finding the origin of the losses should allow acting in response. A justification of the doctoral work will be given at the end of chap. 2. Then, this thesis will focus on the theoretical understanding and the implementation of the decomposition of a measured loss profile as a linear combination of the reference scenarios; and the evaluation of the error on the recomposition and its correctness. The principles of vector decomposition are developed in chap. 3. An ensemble of well controlled loss scenarios (such as vertical and horizontal blow-up of the beams or momentum offset during collimator loss maps) has been gathered, in order to allow the study and creation of reference vectors. To achieve the Vector Decomposition, linear algebra (matrix inversion) is used with the numeric algorithm for the Singular Value Decomposition. Additionally, a specific code for vector projection on a non-orthogonal basis of a hyperplane was developed. The implementation of the vector decomposition on the LHC data is described in chap. 4. After this, the use of the decomposition tools systematically on the time evolution of the losses will be described: first as a study of the variations second by second, then by comparison to a calculated default loss profile. The different ways to evaluate the variation are studied, and are presented in chap. 5. The next chapter (6) describes the gathering of decomposition results applied to beam losses of 2011. The vector decomposition is applied on every second of the ``stable beans'' periods, as a study of the spatial distribution of the loss. Several comparisons of the results given by the decompositions with measurements from other LHC instruments allowed different validations. Eventually, a global conclusion on the interest of the vector decomposition is given. Then, the extra chapter in Appendix A describes the code which was developed to access the BLM data, to represent them in a meaningful way, and to store them. This included connecting to different databases. The whole instrument uses ROOT objects to send SQL queries to the databases, as well as java API, and is coded in Python. A short glossary of the acronyms used here can be found at the end, before the bibliography.

Efeito da soldagem por feixe de elétrons e tratamento térmico pós-soldagem em características mecânicas e microestruturais de tiras de Inconel 718 aplicadas em componentes nucleares / Effect of electron beam welding and post-weld heat treatments in mechanical and microstructural characteristics of Inconel 718 straps applied in nuclear components

Araujo, Victor Hugo Leal de 10 November 2009 (has links)
The nationalization of componets for the nuclear industry is very important to Brazil, not only for the cost reduction, but also for the technological gain when materials and process are developed. The spacer grid fabricated with Inconel 718 and welded by electron beam is one of this components which is not fabricated in Brazil and it is a very important constituent of the fuel assembly structure. On the development of this project it were employed Inconel 718 straps, supplied by Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil S.A. - INB. Initially, before the welding phase, the straps were characterized by chemical analysis, tensile tests and microstructural evaluation using optical and electron microscopy. After the assembly of the straps in an adequate arrangement for execution of the tests, the test specimen were welded by electron beam in a vacuum (<= 5?10-4 mbar) and the main process parameters were ranged, like the beam current, focusing current and the welding time. The welded joints were evaluated according with the obtained weld filet geometry and it were also mechanically evaluated by the hardness and shear tests, aiming to determine the maximum force before collapse. The shear test was performed on a conventional tensile test machine using an adaptative test specimen. It were done, also, evaluations by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) connected with Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS), to evidence the main microstructural characteristics of the weld filet, like the presence and morfology of the constituent phases, and the presence of transition zones. After the definition of these weld parameters to be employed, it were done annealing and aging thermal treatments for differents thermal cycles. The resultings samples of the differents thermal cycles were also characterized by the procedures described earlier, with the purpose to define which condition used for the thermal treatment resulted in more suitable properties for the product. With the obtained results, it become possible to correlate the influence of welding and the thermal treatment with the microstructural evolution and the evaluated mechanical properties. Such results will help Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil S.A. - INB to define the employed parameters in the manufacture process of this component.

Foraminas acessórias da região anterior da maxila em tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico / Additional foraminas in anterior maxilla through cone beam computed tomography

Ikuta, Carla Renata Sanomiya 27 October 2017 (has links)
Through cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is possible to evaluate the region of interest before surgical procedures in tridimensional view. Anatomical variations should be considered for performing surgeries, as the additional foraminas in anterior maxilla (AFAM). The main aim of the present study is evaluate AFAM in 150 CBCT exams, obtained through ICat Classic® device. In ICat Vision® software, the diameter, the distance from the AFAM to the incisive foramen (AFAM-IF), AFAM to the vestibular alveolar ridge (AFAM-VAR) and AFAM intermaxillary suture (AFAM-IS) were measured. It was also evaluated the trajectory of the bony canals related to AFAM. In dentate patients, AFAM was located through the teeth area: central incisor, lateral incisor and canines. The correlation between the presence of FARAM and gender and age was investigated. The AFAM was presented in 21 exams (14%). In the positive exams, 10 patients were edentulous in the region of study interest and it was not possible to locate the foramen in relation to the teeth. Any exam presented the AFAM related to the central incisor, in seven were related to the lateral incisor and in four were related to the canine. Any exam presented the AFAM bilaterally, of which thirteen were located on the right side and eight on the left side. The mean diameter of the AFAM was 1.57 ± 0.38 mm. The distance of the AFAM-VAR 11.65 ± 3.34 mm, AFAMIF was 8.86 ± 2.72 mm and AFAM-IS was 6.37 ± 2.9 mm. The most common bone canal trajectory was upward/ oblique to the anterior region of the floor of the nasal cavity. The correlation between the presence of AFAM and the gender was statically significant for males (p=0.055) in the chi-square test. However, it was not statistically significant for age.

"Dipolos magnéticos da linha de transporte do feixe do microtron" / "Beam transport line dipole magnets of the Mirotron"

Lopes, Mauricio de Lima 03 May 2002 (has links)
In this work we present the design, construction and testing of dipole magnets used on the beam line of IFUSP-Microtron. Initially we studied the fringe field of the magnets on the total beam bending, these values had been used for the definition of design parameters. It has been constructed two dipoles (30 and 45o) as well as a switch magnet (+/- 90o) with azimuthal symmetry. The tests results of the dipoles had shown an adequate performance to the accelerators operation. A method for the simulation of the electron path in the presence of a magnetic field is also described.

A method of identification of sources of vibrations in beams.

Nunes, Luis Flávio Soares 22 November 2012 (has links)
In this work, we try to solve the direct problem of the clamped-clamped Euler- Bernoulli beam equation, with zero initial conditions. We study the inverse problem of the beam, consisting in the identification of the source of vibration, shaped as an element in L2, using as data the speed from an arbitrary point of the beam, during a time interval arbitrarily small. The relevance of this work in Engineering, for example, is in the identification of structural damage in beams.

Tomografia computadorizada por feixe cônico para detecção de lesões incipientes de furca simuladas em mandíbulas suínas maceradas / Cone beam computed tomography for detection of incipient furcation invasion in pig mandibles

Umetsubo, Otávio Shoiti 04 July 2011 (has links)
Intraoral radiographs illustrate the stages of resorption in periodontal interproximal regions. However, overlapping structures hinders evaluation of bone loss in the buccal and lingual cortical plates. The cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is of high importance in various dental specialties such as implantology, evaluation of bone lesions, the study of temporomandibular joint and maxillo-facial surgery. The CBCT has also been increasing indications in other areas, such as periodontics and endodontics. The aim of this study was to establish a) the acquisition protocol most suitable for the detection of incipient furcation invasion chemically simulated and b) assess the reproducibility, sensitivity and specificity of CBCT for the purpose previously mentioned. In this study, 15 pigs macerated mandibles were used, which showed the second molar and the adjacent cortical integrity preserved. Simulated lesions in the furcation area were made with application of 70% perchloric acid, up to four possible sites in each jaw (the right buccal, the right lingual, the left buccal, and left lingual side) by an examiner participant who did not evaluate the images. In the 60 possible sites, 20 were randomly chosen for the simulated lesions. Subsequently, the mandibles underwent cone beam computed tomography (Next Generation i-CAT) in two acquisition protocols: at 0.2 mm and 0.25 mm voxel, both with FOV of 6 cm height by 16 cm in diameter and 26.9 seconds of time. Two observers (calibrated radiologists) evaluated the examinations twice, in random order under controlled lighting. Observers were instructed to direct the evaluation to the regions of the second molars, and they were asked if there were or not injuries on those avaluated sites. Image interpretation was performed on an independent workstation located at the Third Dimension Laboratory of Image in the School of Dentistry, University of São Paulo, using the software Xoran (Xoran Technologies). The sensitivity, specificity and reproducibility of CBCT were assessed in both trials. The CBCT showed high specificity, low sensitivity and moderate reproducibility in the detection of incipient lesions, furcation. The influence of voxel size was not statistically significant in detecting these lesions.

Electron beam freeform fabrication (EBF3) is a rapid metal deposition process that works efficiently with the wieldable alloy Inconel 718 (IN 718). EBF3 is a developing additive manufacturing (AM) process that can manufacture IN 718 parts directly from computer aided design (CAD) data. EBF3 can produce parts significantly faster and more energy efficient than competing IN 718 AM technologies. The EBF3 process utilizes metal wire feedstock which is induced into a molten pool using a focused electron beam in a vacuum environment. This allows parts to be built layer by layer, creating intricate shapes that can be produced cheaper and faster than traditionally manufactured IN 718 parts. Furthermore, it allows traditionally manufactured parts to be modified as additional form is added to them using EBF3. Multiple industries rely on IN 718 parts and can utilize this technology including aerospace engineering, oil refinery, nuclear power generation, and food processing.A main drawback of EBF3 is the lack of knowledge of the effect different EBF3 build techniques will have on the properties of the deposited materials. Most of the reliable data on the mechanical properties relate to a linear build-up strategy and focus on the mechanical properties in the deposition direction (DD). There is no data related to other build-up techniques such as rotation build-up or transitional builds from forged material to EBF3 material. Reliable data on the behavior and microstructure of EBF3 material in a direction other than the DD is also difficult to find. Previous studies showed build-up height influenced mechanical properties but its role is not fully understood yet. This paper presents the mechanical properties and microstructure of an IN 718 plate built using a EBF3 rotational build-up strategy through utilizing a forged plug in the center. The tensile properties of samples at the transition from forged to EBF3 material showed higher ductility and reduced strength than pure EBF3 material. This is likely due the influence of the forge material in one half of the specimen. Samples taken at approximately 15 degree increments from 0 to 90 degrees rotation to the DD in the additive portion of the plate were subjected to tensile testing. Along the build height, or the transverse direction (TD), the lowest strength was demonstrated and the TD aligned strongly to a <001> texture. Samples 45 degrees to the DD showed the greatest strength due to their preference for aligning to a <111> texture. Samples low on the build height demonstrated a higher strength than those on the top and displayed grain structures along the TD which were long, linear, and narrow across multiple deposition layers.
