Autonomic Patterns of Emotion across Multiple Contexts

Research on the autonomic specificity of emotion has spanned several decades. Even though considerable evidence exists for supporting autonomic specificity for discrete emotion states (Kreibig, 2010), there is still an active debate, and conflicting explanations, for these findings (Quigley and Barrett, 2014). There have been several studies employing multivariate pattern classification analytic techniques and calls for those types of studies are still prevalent (Kragel and LaBar, 2014). Although many studies have explored the autonomic specificity of emotions, few have explored what effects the induction methods, themselves, have had in inducing the autonomic change. Autonomic specificity of induction methods might be a meaningful, and confounding, phenomenon in this literature. Based on this unknown variable, the current experiment was designed to see if methods for emotion elicitation could be meaningfully captured by these same pattern classification techniques. This was accomplished using three separate emotion-elicitation methods to elicit five separate emotions. A sample of 64 college-aged students watched film clips, read imagery scripts, and recalled personal memories for five discrete emotions. Using discriminant analysis, the evidence from the current study lent less support for autonomic specificity of emotion than past experiments, and lends some support for providing future exploration into autonomic change that is related to methods for induction. Sex Differences on a Mental Rotation Task: Variations in Hemispheric Activation Between Children and College Students

The area of cognitive research that has produced the most consistent sex differences is the area of spatial ability. Particularly, males usually perform better on mental rotation tasks than do females. One argument for these differences is that experience with spatial activity drives these differences, such that traditionally more masculine activities require more practice of spatial abilities. Another argument is biological in nature, such that there is either 1) a critical period of development that leads to differential lateralization of the brain, or 2) differential activation of the brain by circulating hormones. Performance on mental rotation tasks has been associated with right parietal activation levels, both during task performance and prior to performance during baseline recordings. The present study examined the relations among sex, age, EEG hemispheric activation (at the 10.5-13.5Hz. frequency band), and 2-dimensional mental rotation task ability. Nineteen eight-year-olds (10 boys) and 20 college students (10 men), had EEG recorded at baseline and while performing a mental rotation task. Men performed better on the mental rotation task than women, while there were no differences between boys and girls. After covarying for baseline EEG high alpha power values, EEG results during the mental rotation task indicated an interaction, with men exhibiting more activation (lower EEG power values at 10.5-13.5Hz) than women in the parietal and posterior temporal regions, while boys' and girls' power values 10.5-13.5Hz did not differ in the parietal or posterior temporal regions. Furthermore, during the baseline condition, men generally exhibited more activation (lower EEG power values at 10.5-13.5Hz) throughout all regions of the scalp. Results support the hypothesis that hormones, or hormonal influence, may result in a biological change which affects both brain activation and performance on mental rotation tasks. / Master of Science

Role of corticospinal influences in post-stroke spasticity

Chez les personnes post-AVC (Accident Vasculaire Cérébral), spasticité, faiblesse et toute autre coactivation anormale proviennent de limitations dans la régulation de la gamme des seuils des réflexes d'étirement. Nous avons voulu savoir si les déficits dans les influences corticospinales résiduelles contribuaient à la limitation de la gamme des seuils et au développement de la spasticité chez les patients post-AVC. La stimulation magnétique transcranienne (SMT) a été appliquée à un site du cortex moteur où se trouvent les motoneurones agissant sur les fléchisseurs et extenseurs du coude. Des potentiels évoqués moteurs (PEM) ont été enregistrés en position de flexion et d'extension du coude. Afin d'exclure l'influence provenant de l'excitabilité motoneuronale sur l'évaluation des influences corticospinales, les PEM ont été suscités lors de la période silencieuse des signaux électromyographiques (EMG) correspondant à un bref raccourcissement musculaire juste avant l'enclenchement de la SMT. Chez les sujets contrôles, il y avait un patron réciproque d'influences corticospinales (PEM supérieurs en position d'extension dans les extenseurs et vice-versa pour les fléchisseurs). Quant à la plupart des sujets post-AVC ayant un niveau clinique élevé de spasticité, la facilitation corticospinale dans les motoneurones des fléchisseurs et extenseurs était supérieure en position de flexion (patron de co-facilitation). Les résultats démontrent que la spasticité est associée à des changements substantiels des influences corticospinales sur les motoneurones des fléchisseurs et des extenseurs du coude. / In post-stroke patients, spasticity, weakness and abnormal coactivation result from limitations in the range of regulation of stretch reflex thresholds. We investigated whether the deficits in residual corticospinal influences contribute to the limitation in the regulation of those thresholds and as a result to spasticity in post-stroke subjects. A single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied to the site of the motor cortex projecting to motoneurons of elbow flexors and extensors. Responses to TMS (motor evoked potentials or MEPs) were recorded at a flexion and an extension position of the elbow joint. To exclude the influence of background motoneuronal excitability on the evaluation of corticospinal influences, MEPs were elicited during the electromyographic (EMG) silent period produced by brief muscle shortening prior to TMS. In control subjects, corticospinal facilitation of flexor motoneurons was usually larger whereas that of extensor motoneurons was smaller during actively maintained flexion than when the extension position was maintained (reciprocal pattern of position-related changes in flexor and extensor MEPs). In most post-stroke subjects with high clinical spasticity scores, corticospinal facilitation of both flexor and extensor motoneurons was greater at the actively established flexion position (co-facilitation pattern). Results show that spasticity is associated with substantial changes in the corticospinal influences on flexor and extensor motoneurons. Corticospinal co-facilitation of the two groups of motoneurons may be related to the necessity to overcome resistance of spastic muscles during active changes in the elbow joint angle.

Samuel Beckett et les écrivains de Port-Royal / Samuel Beckett and the Writers of Port-Royal

L’objet de ce travail de recherche est de définir la relation de Samuel Beckett au classicisme français du dix-septième siècle. L’analyse préliminaire de différents manuscrits permet d’identifier les sources primaires et secondaires de ce dernier sur Pascal et Racine, et de mettre en avant, dans un second temps, les différentes correspondances, esthétiques et littéraires, entre l’œuvre de l’écrivain irlandais et Port-Royal. L’arrière-plan philosophique se définit par la conjonction de la logique, de l’éloquence et de la passion au cœur de l’œuvre racinienne, que l’on retrouve dans la rhétorique des Pensées, et l’analyse du langage dans la Logique ou l’art de Penser (1662) d’Arnauld et de Nicole. Les différents aspects de cette filiation intellectuelle sont établis à partir de l’analyse comparée des propos de Beckett dans ses séminaires sur la ‘modernité’ de Racine à Trinity College, Dublin, et des écrits théoriques de contemporains français parmi les plus illustres autour du ‘classicisme moderne’ et de ‘l’antirhétorique’. L’étude de l’essai sur Proust, écrit en 1931, suivra ce bilan historiographique afin démontrer que l’œuvre de Beckett se situe dans le prolongement de l’augustinisme littéraire français,qu’il connaissait au moins à partir des écrits et en particulier du roman de Sainte-Beuve, Volupté. En outre, les thèmes augustiniens parcourent l’œuvre plus tardive, notamment la trilogie de romans français, Molloy, Malone Meurt, et L’Innommable comme les textes courts tels que Le Dépeupleur et Sans. L’intertextualité entre les écrits de Pascal et ceux de Beckett, doublée d’une analyse stylistique, démontrera que la syntaxe appauvrie de l’œuvre beckettienne est profondément inspirée du pessimisme augustinien vis-à-vis du langage. En effet, Beckett, adoptant le français comme principale langue d’expression, choisit le style des Pensées comme l’un de ses modèles les plus fondamentaux. / This thesis examines Samuel Beckett’s understanding of seventeenth century French classicism. Thepreliminary analysis of genetic material, that allows the identification of Beckett’s primary andsecondary sources on Pascal and Racine, leads to a discussion of literary and aesthetic connectionsbetween the works of Beckett and the writers of Port-Royal. The philosophical backdrop of thatinfluence derives from the unique fusion of logic, eloquence, and passion manifested in the works of Racine, together with the conception of language in the Pensées and Arnauld and Nicole’s1662 Logique ou l’art de Penser. Literary theories on style and ‘modern literature’ that are contemporary to Beckett’s Trinity College lectures and early critical writings are examined here in the aim to define the different aspects of that intellectual filiation. A close reading of Beckett’s 1931 monograph on Proust’s A la recherche du temps perdu follows the initial historiographical study, so as to show that the presence of French literary Augustinianism, manifested in the works of Sainte-Beuve, particularly his only novel Volupté, also underlies some of Beckett’s later prose. This includes the trilogy of French novels, Molloy, Malone Dies, and The Unnamable, and pieces belonging to the later period, particularly Le Dépeupleur/The Lost Ones, and Sans/Lessness. Beckett’s ‘syntax of weakness’, based on reduction and impoverishment, is inspired by the Augustinian pessimism towards language at work in the Logique. As such, the anthropological vision of Port-Royal anticipated Beckett’s definition of being as chaos, so much so that Pascal’s style crucially defined his use of the French language itself.

Exploration of geometrical concepts involved in the traditional circular buildings and their relationship to classroom learning

(Mathematics)) --University of Limpopo, 2013 / Traditionally, mathematics has been perceived as objective, abstract, absolute and universal subject that is devoid of social and cultural influences. However, the new perspective has led to the perceptions that mathematics is a human endeavour, and therefore it is culture-bound and context-bound. Mathematics is viewed as a human activity and therefore fallible. This research was set out to explore geometrical concepts involved in the traditional circular buildings in Mopani district of Limpopo Province and relate them to the classroom learning in grade 11 classes. The study was conducted in a very remote place and a sample of two traditional circular houses from Xitsonga and Sepedi cultures was chosen for comparison purposes because of their cultural diversity. The questions that guided my exploration were: • Which geometrical concepts are involved in the design of the traditional circular buildings and mural decorations in Mopani district of the Limpopo Province? • How do the geometrical concepts in the traditional circular buildings relate to the learning of circle geometry in grade 11 class? The data were gathered through my observations and the learners’ observations, my interviews with the builders and with the learners, and the grade 11 learners’ interaction with their parents or builders about the construction and decorations of the traditional circular houses. I used narrative configurations to analyse the collected data. Inductive analysis, discovery and interim analysis in the field were employed during data analysis. From my own analysis and interpretations, I found that there are many geometrical concepts such as circle, diameter, semi-circle, radius, centre of the circle etc. that are involved in the design of the traditional circular buildings. In the construction of these houses, these concepts are involved from the foundation of the building to the roof level. All these geometrical concepts can be used by both educators and learners to enhance the teaching and learning of circle geometry. Further evidence emerged that teaching with meaning and by relating abstract world to the real world makes mathematics more relevant and more useful.

Tracking linguistic and attentional influences on preferential looking in infancy

One unresolved issue in early word learning research is the relationship between word learning, categorization, and attention. Two distinct cognitive processes, attentional preferences related to categorical processing and inter-modal matching are involved in this relationship. Keeping the effects of these processes separate and controlled can be a difficult task. Not doing so can potentially confound the interpretation of research in this area. In a series of four preferential looking studies, the effects of referential assignment and novelty seeking in infancy were teased apart. In Study 1, 13-month olds preferred to look toward a monitor on which the stimuli changed category on every trial, and away from a monitor on which the stimuli were drawn from a single category. This preference developed in conditions in which infants listened to labels, non-language sound, or participated in silence. In Study 2, 18-month-olds developed the same preference when listening to non-language sounds or when participating in silence, but developed no preference when listening to labels. Results of studies 3 and 4 suggest that the lack of preference by 18-month-olds in the label condition result from competing behaviors of novelty seeking and referential assignment. / text
