This work deals with Early Bronze Age ingot torques, their composition, and material properties. The aim was to decide whether and how a choice of materials by composition or properties was possible during the Early Bronze Age. Early Bronze Age ingot torques were analysed and artefacts from several hoard finds and working stages were investigated metallographically. On the basis of these data the production technology was reconstructed. For the determination of mechanical and technological properties, reference alloys were produced and investigated. The production process was simulated by forging experiments. The investigations revealed that ingot torques were produced by a standardised technology, independent of their composition. The results of the material testing show that it is possible to distinguish the composition of the Early Bronze Age alloys by their mechanical and technological properties.

Die Tonscherbe mit der Inventarnummer 1270 ist das zentrale Stück der Vitrine im Schriftenraum, das im Ägyptischen Museum der Universität Leipzig die demotische Sprache und Schrift repräsentiert. Sie ist neben knapp 20 weiteren Objekten Zeuge dieser Sprachstufe des Ägyptischen, die zwischen dem siebten vorchristlichen und fünften nachchristlichen Jahrhundert in Ägypten geschrieben und gesprochen wurde, so zum Beispiel zur Zeit Kleopatras VII. Es handelt sich dabei um eine komplizierte, von rechts nach links zu lesende Kursive. Nur wenige Forscher weltweit sind in der Lage, die Zeichen zu entziffern, die stark durch individuelle Handschriften geprägt sind. In Demotisch liegen uns neben großen Werken der Weltliteratur wie die Setna-Romane oder magische Handbücher auch Zeugnisse des Alltagslebens vor. Darunter sind Schülerübungen, Einkaufslisten, Ehe- und Scheidungsurkunden oder auch komplexe Gerichtsdokumente zu nennen. Diese geben uns einen Einblick in Wirtschaft, Recht und Verwaltung in die Lebensweise der Bevölkerung Ägyptens vor 2000 Jahren.

Like many other students, my first contact with Demotic studies was through Janet Johnson's introduction to Thus Wrote 'Onchsheshonqy, her Demotic Verbal System, and the first letter files of the Chicago Demotic Dictionary. To my mind, these publications remain the best course materials for beginners studying ancient Egyptian languages - and this why the students in my master class are treated to the whole package from Chicago as well. I feel honored to contribute to a festschrift in her honor.

Mit der Übersetzung und dem Kommentar der Papyri Graecae et Demoticae Magicae von Hans-Dieter Betz et al. 1986 und in zweiter Auflage 1992 ist ein wichtiger Schritt in der Beschäftigung mit religiösen Praktiken im römischen Ägypten gemacht worden: das Verständnis dieser komplexen Quellen erschließt sich nur in der gleichzeitigen Betrachtung der Texte in allen Sprachen und kulturellen Kontexten, aus denen sie verfasst sind. Mit diesem Artikel soll ein Einblick in zwei Quellentypen gegeben werden, denen eine ähnliche Problematik zugrunde liegt: die Ticket-Orakel oder Orakelfragen in demotischer, griechischer und koptischer Sprache sowie dem griechischsprachigen Losorakelcorpus 'Sortes Astrampsychi'.

The topic of this contribution is a hieratic ostracon published recently by Ben Haring which allegedly contains a list of words arranged according to the south Semitic sequence of letters. His hypothesis can be confirmed and some of the words can be identified as Semitic. In addition to we suggest that the words are intended as letter names which, however, did not become canonical over time.
