The Development of Knowledge-Based Economy in Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong: A Comparative Study

Chen, Jo-Ning 30 July 2002 (has links)
Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate and compare the development of knowledge-based economy and related policies in Taiwan, China and Hong Kong. Furthermore, a cross-country analysis of knowledge-based economy is conducted. The meaning and content of knowledge-based economy are firstly analyzed in the light of innovation theory and human capital theory. A cross-country empirical study is then conducted. The data source is 2001 World Development Indicators CD-Rom published by the World Bank. Utilizing the method of factor analysis, we extract two important factors characterizing knowledge-based economy. The first is the efficiency of communication and exchanging information, which represents the efficiency of delivering knowledge, and the level of human capital, which represents the stock of knowledge. The regression method is used to analyze the relationships between the two factors and productivity. It is found that both factors have strong positive effects on GDP per capita, agriculture value added per worker, and research and development expenditure. Individual indicators in the two factors are used to evaluate and compare the performance of Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong. It is found that Taiwan¡¦s level of knowledge-based economy is similar to the average level of APEC memberships, but better than that of East Asia, of Pacific countries, and of upper-middle income countries. China¡¦s level of knowledge-based economy is obviously not able to catch up with the average level of APEC memberships, that of East Asia, that of Pacific countries, and that of low-middle income countries. The performance of knowledge-based economy of Hong Kong is much better and equal to that of OECD and of G8 memberships. Our findings imply that the performance of knowledge-based economy of Taiwan is better than that of China, but inferior to that of Hong Kong and that of Japan, Singapore, and Korea. The reason might be that Taiwan¡¦s implementation of related national policies falls behind these countries. We suggest that the government should put more emphasis on implementing information and communication infrastructure in order to enhance the efficiency of delivering, stirring up, and diffusing of knowledge.

Transaction Costs and Economic Performance¡GA Comparative Study of Taiwan, China and Hong Kong

Chung, Fu-Kuo 07 July 2003 (has links)
Abstract The goals of this study are threefold: first of all, cross-country data for 1997 and 2000, extracted from¡§2002 World Development Indicator¡¨ the World Bank, are utilized to estimate transaction efficiency indicators (TEIs) for various countries. Second, this study further examines the influences of transaction efficiency on the various economic developments, including per capita real income, foreign capital inflow, and infant mortality rate. Finally, this study applies questionnaire survey approach to carry out comparison between Taiwan, China and Hong Kong in terms of transaction costs and the institutional performances. Utilizing ¡§factor analysis¡¨ to measure cross-country TEIs, this study argues that countries with better TEIs generally have higher per capita incomes and FDI net inflows, but lower infant mortality rates. And, we may suggest that Taiwan¡¦s transaction efficiency is superior to the average level of APEC memberships, East Asia and Pacific countries. China is inferior to APEC memberships East Asia, and Pacific countries in terms of degrees of transaction efficiency. The evidence from the study indicates that Hong Kong¡¦s the transaction efficiency is better and equal to developed countries¡¦ and G8 memberships¡¦ ones. In adddition, Taiwan is better than that of China but inferior to that of Hong Kong in terms of transaction efficiency. In comparison to the statistical outcomes, the empirical results of questionnaire survey also confirm that Taiwan is much better than China, but worse than Hong Kong in their stitutional performances.

If You Want to Catch with the Train, You'll Have to Pay : A study of Swedish elite hockey organizations that are facing commercialization

Nilsson, Anna, Elfström, Åsa January 2006 (has links)

Research Questions: Following questions will be looked at from a management perspective in the researched elite hockey clubs: (1) How has the commercialization affected the areas of responsibility? In regards to areas of responsibility: (a) How has the commercialization affected the decision making? (b) How has the commercialization affected the information and communication? (c) How has the commercialization affected the motivation? In addition, we need to find out the overall structure of the clubs and the managers’ view on commercialization in non-profit organizations. Therefore we need to add two more research questions: (2) In what respect is the organizational structure experienced in a different way today? and (3) How has the commercialization changed Swedish hockey clubs?

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to create an understanding about how managers in Swedish elite hockey clubs experience the assumed adjustments in organizational structure and areas of responsibility when turning into more commercial organizations.

Method: With an interpretive hermeneutic approach used in the sense of a qualitative study, we explain how the managers of five hockey clubs within Elitserien experience the adjustments when turning into more commercial organizations. The qualitative study consisted of a number of personal and phone interviews in order to collect the empirical data.

Results: The main implication of the commercialization of Swedish hockey is that it has created conflicts in the daily operations, caused by the contradictions between commercial and non-profit activities. In addition, the organizational structure has in general become more professional with an increasing amount of distinct areas of responsibility.

The Usefulness of ICT Support Systems for Thesis Courses : Learners' Perspectives at Bachelor and Master Level

Aghaee, Naghmeh January 2015 (has links)
Doing a bachelor’s or master’s degree is a journey that leads to success or attrition (dropout). Previous research show to the significance of considering learners’ perspectives and their need for information and different types of interaction. This can be done through online ICTSS (information and communication technology support systems). The overall aim of this dissertation was to create knowledge about how the use of ICTSS can facilitate different types of interaction and support learners in order to reduce thesis problems and attrition and to enhance the quality of the thesis outcomes. The aim was operationalized by two research questions scrutinizing the interaction problems in the thesis process and investigating how the use of ICTSS can facilitate different types of interaction to reduce such problems and attrition, and to enhance the learning opportunities and quality of the thesis outcomes. To answer the research questions, five main studies were performed by applying different research methods on a case study. The empirical studies were performed at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV) at Stockholm University, Sweden. The respondents were different learners (students) with active thesis projects at the bachelor or master level in different programs at DSV between 2012 and 2015. For the first two studies, conceptual and content analysis of the data collected from the case study was performed. For the three other studies, open-ended online questionnaires (survey) and interviews were conducted. On the basis of the findings, three main types of interaction issues were developed which related to the need for more learner-content, peer-to-peer, and learner-supervisor interaction in the thesis process. The hypothesis was that the interaction issues could be reduced by implementing a set of strategic suggestions through the use of an ICTSS including a set of functionalities and resources. The usefulness of these functionalities and resources was evaluated with regard to the learners’ perception and experiences. The findings were categorized to facilitate learner-content, peer-to-peer, and learner-supervisor interaction, as well as management of the contents, supervision, and communication of the supervisory team. From these categories, a conceptual framework was developed in this dissertation to illustrate how the use of the ICTSS supports the thesis process. In conclusion, providing access to a set of structured e-resources and supporting educational communication through different types of interaction with peers and the supervisory team, enables learners’ self-managed learning and facilitates similar learning opportunities for learners in thesis courses.

Τσαμίγκος, Τιμολέων 09 January 2009 (has links)
The fact that last years we are witnesses of spectacular developments in the technologies of information and communications is worldwide accepted. However, these developments influence directly the productivity of work and the result of this is the mutation of the labour environment in quantity and quality. The significances of information and knowledge acquire particular importance in the new [techno]- economic example which substantially is based on them, developing innovative activities in the productive process, in the skills of employees and in the operation of business generally. However the continuously surge of technologies of information and communications, while it creates new markets and new products and increases the employment and at the same time displaces workforce with machines. As a result of this, are the changes in the labour relations and new challenges in the education and business. The present diplomatic thesis analyzes the changes that effect in the employment because of the technology of information and communications and presents the elements that compose the new economy in which we have been already in. At the same time, it determines the effects of new technology and the challenges that are created through this.

Informacinių komunikacinių technologijų panaudojimo ypatumai Šiaulių miesto bendrojo lavinimo mokyklose: neigiamo poveikio ugdytiniams aspektas / Peculiarities of Information and Communication Technology usage in comprehensive schools of Siauliai: aspect of negative influence on students

Jankauskas, Rūtenis 16 August 2007 (has links)
Recently, the issues of Information and Communication Technologies have been exhaustively discussed. The questions are debated at scientific, technical, political, managerial etc level. Certainly, the present technologies have many possibilities. However, ‚transferring‘ them to the educational system seems to be the most difficult problem. What are the solutions to be reached in order to effectively apply the technologies for teaching/learning purposes, to decrease a possible negatyve impact on health etc. A question if we can support an idea that modern ITC helps with the educational process is not explicit?(Lamanauskas, 2006). Usage of the ICT in educational establishments (institutions) is device of education, integrated in learning process for not so long time ago. It can not be evaluated unambiguous, because of its (newness) originality and permanent shifting (alternation). Few years ago main task was to provide (supply) new computers for schools, today’s point (relevant) problem becomes how to integrate the ICT for effective using in learning process. Usually it is contemplated in what possibilities in learning process will give the use of ICT, but everyone forgets that there is a negative influence for the pupils. Main aim of this work is to estimate what kind of subjects gives the negative influence for the pupils and the learning process in working with ICT.
