Defining information: the site of struggle

The contemporary information context is paradoxically antipathetic to the traditional information professions, and there are indications that, in order to survive, they will need to undergo radical transformation. This would require a re-conceptualisation of the "objects" of their knowledge domain, the entities and phenomena which comprise it, and the relationships between these entities (with particular reference to the concept of "information" itself). The term "information" is used in a multitude of contexts in the so called "Information Society", and this overuse has undermined the disciplinary and professional position of the information professions: the site of information work is contested. Furthermore, the changing context of the Information Society has challenged and diminished the essential task of the information professions: to deal with society's information problems and needs, as distinguished from the provision of information and communication technologies. In addition, access to information itself is contested as it is increasingly mediated by technology. The aim of this work is to develop a conceptual model by stabilising the defining concepts and constructs of information work, so that the social objectives and praxis of the field are elucidated and supported. The study proposes that such a theoretical framework could support an emergent metacommunity of information professionals.

Analisa e descreve a atuação do profissional da Informação nos processos de Gestão do Conhecimento das empresas, com ênfase no mapeamento do conhecimento tácito e explícito das pessoas, buscando disponibilizar/compartilhar as informações mapeadas, por meio da Intranet, que é uma facilitadora, enquanto Tecnologia da Informação, do trabalho do profissional da Informação. Para atingir tal objetivo, os onceitos relativos ao tema foram aprofundados por meio de pesquisa e revisão bibliográfica nas literaturas nacional e internacional. Com a intenção de ilustrar a realidade, um estudo de caso é apresentado, o qual foi realizado no Knowledge Center da KPMG Auditores Independentes. Conclui-se que o Profissional da Informação tem potencial para liderar e administrar processos de mapeamento do conhecimento nas organizações, principalmente porque possui especializações inerentes à sua formação, no que concerne a localização, a organização, a estruturação e a disponibilização de dados e informações, que posteriormente são transformados em conhecimento. Outra conclusão positiva refere-se ao uso da Tecnologia da Informação, neste caso específico, a Intranet, como aliada no trabalho do bibliotecário. Apresenta um estudo inicial sobre a possibilidade de aproximar de forma integrada, a abordagem do coaching no contexto da atuação do Profissional da Informação em Serviços de Informação, como um método eficaz de planejamento e aperfeiçoamento pessoal e profissional que este pode trilhar em suas práticas de trabalho. Dessa maneira, na Sociedade da Informação e do Conhecimento e no agora emergente e mutável ambiente de informação, figura-se a aquisição de um \'novo olhar\' por parte desse profissional, no que se refere às novas formas de atuação, de novos saberes, bem como de aprendizagem vitalícia. Para tanto, buscou-se refletir sobre a aproximação do coaching à prática do Profissional da Informação em três grandes áreas: na reflexão e no planejamento de sua carreira profissional; na gestão e liderança de equipes de trabalho e na atuação em serviços de referência e informação, uma vez que a capacidade de planejar, tratar, organizar e gerir com eficiência esses ambientes surge quando este profissional adquire consciência e empoderamento de conhecimentos e habilidades necessários ao direcionamento, planejamento, funcionamento e avaliação relacionados ao seu campo de atuação. A pesquisa também pretende inserir uma nova compreensão social e humana a esse profissional em sua atividade de trabalho, seja na promoção ou na ressignificação do potencial humano individual e coletivo de seus colaboradores, bem como de si mesmo, através da adoção do coaching ou apenas objetivando suscitar discussões sobre este tema para a ampliação e necessidade de outras pesquisas nas áreas de Biblioteconomia e Ciência da Informação. / It presents an initial study on the possibility of introducing and relating in an integrative way the coaching approach to the Information Professional\'s performance context in Information Services as an effective method of personal and professional planning and improvement for their work practices.Thus, it is necessary that such professionals gain a \"new perspective\" on new ways of performing, acquiring some recent knowledge, as well as continuous learning, in the current emerging and changing information environment of the information and knowledge society. Therefore, it was sought to reflect upon the relation between coaching and the information professional practice in three major areas: pondering about and planning their professional career; management and leadership of work teams and performance of reference and information services, since the capabilities of planning, dealing with, organizing and managing in an effective way arise when such professional becomes aware and acquires necessary knowledge and abilities concerning to the performance area. Knowledge sharing on enterprise social media among information professionals

Through a qualitative case study, this study explores why enterprise social media is used for knowledge sharing among information professionals, and what factors drive and hinder sharing knowledge on enterprise social media among information professionals. Data was collected through online semi-structured interviews with seven information professionals based in a Scandinavian country. Qualitative analysis of content was used in this study and the results were analyzed according to the affordances of enterprise social media of visibility, persistence and association, and related to previous research. The study concludes that information professionals use enterprise social media for knowledge sharing to increase their professional development, and there are diverse factors influencing knowledge sharing on enterprise social media. Some significant drivers to knowledge sharing are helping others and develop expertise. Significant barriers are fear of sharing and lack of trust in content. The outcome of this study gives a better understanding of why information professionals use enterprise social media for knowledge sharing and what factors influence their knowledge sharing practices on enterprise social media.

Usages et applications du web sémantique en bibliothèques numériques / Uses and applications of Semantic Web in Digital Libraries

Ce travail de recherche se situe dans le champ interdisciplinaire des sciences de l’information et de la communication (SIC) et a pour but d’explorer la question de l'usage du web sémantique en bibliothèques numériques. Le web oblige les bibliothèques à repenser leurs organisations, leurs activités, leurs pratiques et leurs services, afin de se repositionner en tant qu'instituts de références pour la diffusion des savoirs. Dans cette thèse, nous souhaitons comprendre les contextes d'usage du web sémantique en bibliothèques numériques françaises. Il s'agit de s'interroger sur les apports du web sémantique au sein de ces bibliothèques, ainsi que sur les défis et les obstacles qui accompagnent sa mise en place. Ensuite, nous nous intéressons aux pratiques documentaires et à leurs évolutions suite à l'introduction du web sémantique en bibliothèques numériques. La problématique s'attache au rôle que peuvent jouer les professionnels de l'information dans la mise en place du web sémantique en bibliothèques numériques. Après avoir sélectionné 98 bibliothèques numériques suite à une analyse de trois recensements, une enquête s'appuyant sur un questionnaire vise à recueillir des données sur l'usage du web sémantique dans ces bibliothèques. Ensuite, une deuxième enquête réalisée au moyen d'entretiens permet de mettre en évidence les représentations qu'ont les professionnels de l'information du web sémantique et de son usage en bibliothèque, ainsi que de l'évolution de leurs pratiques professionnelles. Les résultats montrent que la représentation des connaissances dans le cadre du web sémantique nécessite une intervention humaine permettant de fournir le cadre conceptuel pour déterminer les liens entre les données. Enfin, les professionnels de l'information peuvent devenir des acteurs du web sémantique, dans le sens où leurs rôles ne se limitent pas à l'utilisation du web sémantique mais aussi au développement de ses standards pour assurer une meilleure organisation des connaissances. / This research work deals with the interdisciplinary field of the information and communication sciences (CIS) and aims to explore the use of the semantic web in digital libraries. The web requires libraries to rethink their organizations, activities, practices and services in order to reposition themselves as reference institutes for the dissemination of knowledge. In this thesis, we wish to understand the contexts of use of the semantic web in French digital libraries. It questions the contributions of the semantic web within these libraries, as well as on the challenges and the obstacles that accompany its implementation. We are also interested in documentary practices and their evolutions following the introduction of the semantic web in digital libraries. The problem is related to the role that information professionals can play in the implementation of the semantic web in digital libraries. After selecting 98 digital libraries following an analysis of three censuses, a questionnaire survey aims to collect data on the use of the semantic web in these libraries. Then, a second interview-based survey consists of highlighting the representations that the information professionals have of the semantic web and its use in the library, as well as on the evolution of their professional practices. The results show that the representation of knowledge within the semantic web requires human intervention to provide the conceptual framework to determine the links between the data. Finally, information professionals can become actors of the semantic web, in the sense that their roles are not limited to the use of the semantic web but also to the development of its standards to ensure better organization of knowledge.

Its main aim was to analyze how the dissemination of interest for information professionals occurs through the social media De olho na CI. It adopts the reference of being a descriptive research, of qualitative approach, using part of the methods of virtual ethnography, participant observation and field diary for data collection. Data were analyzed from the perspective of documental analysis, linked to the context of web search, joining the Social Network Analysis in order to achieve the objectives proposed in the research. It was concluded, during the research, that the social media De olho na CI enable the occurrence of social networks on the internet and that they showed significant growth between the internet network and the information professionals seeking knowledge for their professional training. / A presente pesquisa aborda o De olho na CI na perspectiva das mídias sociais da rede Internet Blog, Twitter e Facebook -, vistas como recursos capazes de desenvolver Redes Sociais na Internet (RSI), e as mesmas como meio de disseminação da informação. Adota o referencial da pesquisa descritiva, de abordagem qualitativa, utilizando parte dos métodos da etnografia virtual, a observação participante e o diário de campo para coleta dos dados. Analisa os dados a partir da perspectiva da análise documental, ligada ao contexto da pesquisa na internet, unindo-se à Análise de Redes Sociais a fim de alcançar os objetivos propostos na pesquisa. Concluiu-se, durante a pesquisa, que as mídias sociais De olho na CI possibilitam a ocorrência de redes sociais na internet e que as mesmas mostraram um crescimento relevante dentro da rede internet e entre os profissionais da informação que buscam conhecimentos para sua formação profissional.
