Compliance Issues In Cloud Computing Systems

Unknown Date (has links)
Appealing features of cloud services such as elasticity, scalability, universal access, low entry cost, and flexible billing motivate consumers to migrate their core businesses into the cloud. However, there are challenges about security, privacy, and compliance. Building compliant systems is difficult because of the complex nature of regulations and cloud systems. In addition, the lack of complete, precise, vendor neutral, and platform independent software architectures makes compliance even harder. We have attempted to make regulations clearer and more precise with patterns and reference architectures (RAs). We have analyzed regulation policies, identified overlaps, and abstracted them as patterns to build compliant RAs. RAs should be complete, precise, abstract, vendor neutral, platform independent, and with no implementation details; however, their levels of detail and abstraction are still debatable and there is no commonly accepted definition about what an RA should contain. Existing approaches to build RAs lack structured templates and systematic procedures. In addition, most approaches do not take full advantage of patterns and best practices that promote architectural quality. We have developed a five-step approach by analyzing features from available approaches but refined and combined them in a new way. We consider an RA as a big compound pattern that can improve the quality of the concrete architectures derived from it and from which we can derive more specialized RAs for cloud systems. We have built an RA for HIPAA, a compliance RA (CRA), and a specialized compliance and security RA (CSRA) for cloud systems. These RAs take advantage of patterns and best practices that promote software quality. We evaluated the architecture by creating profiles. The proposed approach can be used to build RAs from scratch or to build new RAs by abstracting real RAs for a given context. We have also described an RA itself as a compound pattern by using a modified POSA template. Finally, we have built a concrete deployment and availability architecture derived from CSRA that can be used as a foundation to build compliance systems in the cloud. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

E-government adoption process : XBRL adoption in HM revenue and customs and companies house

Mousa, Rania January 2011 (has links)
The last two decades have seen an evolution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capabilities in the public sector which facilitates the adoption of several IT innovations. Electronic government is one of these strategic innovations that many government agencies have considered adopting to deliver government information and services and support the modernisation of government’s administrative tasks. This research investigates an e-government adoption process as represented by the Extensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) adoption process. XBRL constitutes one of the key components of the electronic regulatory reporting process in HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and Companies House (CH). A comprehensive conceptual framework is developed to examine XBRL adoption process and the influential technological, organisational, environmental factors and e-government challenges that affect this process. The contribution of this comprehensive framework is that it develops various relationships among these factors, challenges and stages of the adoption process which have not been identified in the IT adoption or e-government literature. The framework for e-government adoption in the public sector is useful in multiple ways. The major benefit is to contribute to understanding the adoption process, identify the technological infrastructure, and emphasise the importance of the organisational readiness and impact of the environment on the adoption process. The framework can also help government decision makers to visualise a suitable strategic action plan for the future of electronic government by identifying the key issues and potential challenges associated with adopting e-government projects.

Web semântica : aspectos interdisciplinares da gestão de recursos informacionais no âmbito da ciência da informação /

Ramalho, Rogério Aparecido Sá. January 2006 (has links)
In this way, the studies related to the Semantic Web project have been detaching as a new perspective in the development of technologies that enable an increase in the quality and relevance of the recovered information through the development of instruments that allow describing them formally, in a format that can be processed by machines. The semantic aspects that are inherent to the information resources contribute to the identification and contextualization of the available information in the Web environment. In this way, the proposition of this research is the accomplishment of a theoretical and methodological study of interdisciplinary characteristic about the Semantic Web project, aiming to identify its theoretical basis, favoring the demystification of the concepts and subjacent technologies, and evaluating in what stage the Information Science area can contribute to its concretization, becoming evident the possible reflexes of these new technological approaches in its theoretical corpus. So a bibliographic review about the development of the Internet and the main concepts and technologies inherent to the Web Semantic... Managing electronic resources at selected tertiary institutions in the Western Cape, South Africa

Sikhosana, Regina Balengane January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Business Information Systems))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016. / The aim of this research study is to explore the management of electronic resources used in libraries. Three tertiary institutions were used as case studies. The unit of analysis was the three libraries, with library employees (14) working and managing electronic resources being the unit of observation. Non-random, purposive sampling techniques were used. The finding of this study suggests that the participants do not use the Aleph integrated library system (ILS) optimally to manage electronic resources. Library employees do not keep up with current and new emerging technology trends in the library and academic environment. There is a lack of training, as well as understanding, of business processes and workflows. This is emphasised by a lack of knowledge of library system environments and, finally, the high cost of implementing the library systems. Electronic resource management (ERM) systems emerged in the early 2000s, and it became clear that traditional integrated library systems did not have sufficient capacity to provide efficient processing for meeting the changing needs and challenges of libraries at tertiary institutions. Libraries find it challenging to manage the wide range of licensed electronic resources, collaborating, cooperating and sharing resources with different libraries. The increasing number of electronic resource demands from users for remote or off campus access makes it difficult for libraries to manage electronic resources. As a result of this inability to manage the electronic resources, libraries are not effectively and efficiently using appropriate electronic resource systems to meet their business requirements.

Las hemerotecas de la prensa digital. Análisis de diarios españoles

Guallar, Javier 11 December 2012 (has links)
Denominación A.2. Ubicación del acceso a la hemeroteca A.3. Información sobre la hemeroteca A.4. Coste A.5. Productos documentales B.1. Colecciones disponibles B.2. Formatos disponibles B.3. Cobertura temporal C.1. / This study presents a system for the analysis and evaluation of digital press archives, analyses the digital press archives of a sample of Spanish newspapers and presents a proposal to classify and analyze the main sources that provide access to online press. The system is a kind of heuristic evaluation procedure based on 27 indicators articulated in four main sections: general features, contents, the query system, and presentation of results. For each indicator is explained: definition, explanation and use of punctuation. With this method, it analyses the digital press archives of the Spanish newspapers with the largest digital circulations between 2007 and 2010. The study points out the best and worst aspects of the digital press archives, establishing a ranking of newspapers in which El Mundo, Abc, El País and La Vanguardia occupy the top positions, and finally shows five major trends: extension of the temporary fund online, free archives versus payment archives, simplification (and depletion) of the query, filters in the presentation of results and documentary products in the archive section.

A Case Study Of Impact Analysis: Tubitak Research Support Programmes

Tanrikulu Erden, Ilkay 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey is the major academic research management and funding agency in Turkey. As a policy-maker, the council has undertaken very important responsibility in designing a science and technology policy of Turkey. By means of impact analysis, evaluating the ongoing research support programmes is important for designing more effective ones. However, impact of academic research are widely disseminated, journal articles being published and cited, number of academic staff involved in the supported projects, patents, and prototypes could be used as an evaluation instrument for impact analysis. In this study first time, we have figured out the social benefits (in 2008 TL fixed prices) of academic research projects, specifically physics academic research projects that were supported during 1998-2008 by T&Uuml / BiTAK. Return of funds of T&Uuml / BiTAK supported physics projects during 2005-2008 was calculated as 142%, when rate of return was taken 28%.

Effect Of Relative Humidity Of Reactant Gases On Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Performance

Ozsan, Burcu 01 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Fuel cells are expected to play a major role in the economy of this century and for the foreseeable future. The use of hydrogen and fuel cells can address critical challenges in all energy sectors like commercial, residential, industrial, and transportation. Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert energy of a chemical reaction directly into electrical energy by combining hydrogen fuel with oxygen from air. If hydrogen is used as fuel, only byproducts are heat and water. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the effect of operating temperature and relative humidity (RH) of reactant gases on proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell performance by adjusting the operation temperature of the fuel cell and humidification temperature of the reactant gases. In this study, the effect of the different operating parameters on the performance of single proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell have been studied experimentally using pure hydrogen on the anode side and air on the cathode side. Experiments with different fuel cell operating temperatures, different air and hydrogen humidification temperatures have been carried out. The experimental results are presented in the form of polarization curves, which show the effects of the various operating parameters on the performance of the PEM fuel cell. The polarization curves data have been fit to a zero dimensional model, and the effect of the fuel cell operation and humidification temperatures on the kinetic parameters and the cell resistance have been determined. The fuel cell has been operated with 1.2 and 2 stoichiometry ratio for hydrogen and air, respectively. Fuel cell performance was detected at different fuel cell operation temperatures changing from 60 to 80 &ordm / C, and relative humidity of the entering gases changing from 20 to 100 % for air and 50 % and 100 % for hydrogen. Tests were performed in a PEM fuel cell test station. The highest performance of 275 mA/cm2 at 0.6 V and 650 mA/cm2 at 0.4 V was obtained for 50 % RH air with a constant 100 % relative humidity of hydrogen for working at atmospheric pressure and 60 oC fuel cell temperature. However, the highest performance of 230 mA/cm2 at 0.6 V for 50 % RH of air with a constant 100 % relative humidity of hydrogen and the highest performance of 530 mA/cm2 at 0.4 V for both 70 % RH and 100% RH air with a constant 100 % relative humidity of hydrogen was obtained for working at atmospheric pressure and 70 oC fuel cell temperature. Besides, the highest performance of 200 mA/cm2 at 0.6 V and 530 mA/cm2 at 0.4 V was obtained for 100 % RH air with a constant 100 % RH of hydrogen for working at atmospheric pressure and 80 oC fuel cell temperature.

From libraries to e-learning centres: a South African library experience

Agyei, M V Unknown Date (has links)
Experiences of the TUT LIS in offering support to e-learning. / Though relatively new to the family of universities and in particular, universities of technology, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Library and Information Services (LIS) is one of the fortunate South African higher education libraries which have a dedicated and fully-fledged IT and Systems Section. Further, TUT LIS has a Section referred to as Electronic Resource Centres which is commonly known as ERCs. The Section includes Internet Centres, popularly known as ICentres. Each of TUT’s nine learning site libraries has an ERC. Four of the learning sites have I-Centres, some in student residences. Many of the libraries have a training room attached to the ERC. Those which do not have a training facility schedule training at certain times and only thereafter avail the ERC for other use. Many of the academic departments have computer laboratories for use by their students. These are not related to ERCs or I-Centres. The LIS works in cooperation with the Directorate of Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) and Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Services to support the teaching departments and students’ learning endeavours. The LIS is involved in a project to increase the University’s success and throughput rates. Other partners in this project are from HEDS (Higher Education Development and Support) Directorate comprising: Curriculum Development, Teaching and Learning with Technology, Cooperative Education and Student Development and Support. The aim of this paper is to share experiences of the TUT LIS in offering support to e-learning. The newly formed LIS embraced the model of the ERC/I-Centre as a one-stop facility that one of the merger partners, Pretoria Technikon, had established. The other partner, Technikon Northern Gauteng had partially developed an ERC to “extend access to the book/journal in electronic format”.

Automatic Concept-Based Query Expansion Using Term Relational Pathways Built from a Collection-Specific Association Thesaurus

Lyall-Wilson, Jennifer Rae January 2013 (has links)
The dissertation research explores an approach to automatic concept-based query expansion to improve search engine performance. It uses a network-based approach for identifying the concept represented by the user's query and is founded on the idea that a collection-specific association thesaurus can be used to create a reasonable representation of all the concepts within the document collection as well as the relationships these concepts have to one another. Because the representation is generated using data from the association thesaurus, a mapping will exist between the representation of the concepts and the terms used to describe these concepts. The research applies to search engines designed for use in an individual website with content focused on a specific conceptual domain. Therefore, both the document collection and the subject content must be well-bounded, which affords the ability to make use of techniques not currently feasible for general purpose search engine used on the entire web.
