La calidad en la interpretación de conferencias (inglés-español) de los intérpretes y destinatarios desde una perspectiva comunicativa y dual / Exploring Quality in Conference Interpreting from a Communicative and Dual Perspective: User and Interpreter Views

El presente trabajo busca identificar las concepciones de calidad de los destinatarios e intérpretes para determinar la relación entre las necesidades de los destinatarios y los principios de calidad de los intérpretes. Para ello, se tomó como referencia las dimensiones de interpretación de Pöchhacker (2013) y el modelo comunicativo de Angelelli (2000). El estudio se realizó en siete conferencias con interpretación simultánea (inglés-español) en Lima, Perú entre agosto de 2018 y junio de 2019. Se empleó una metodología mixta: diez entrevistas a los intérpretes y 86 cuestionarios aplicados a ambos participantes, que contaron con dos escalas de valoración de once criterios lingüísticos y extralingüísticos. Los destinatarios e intérpretes coincidieron en la valoración positiva de pronunciación correcta, fluidez y seguridad en la voz; por el contrario, difirieron en la valoración de la fidelidad y el uso correcto de los términos. Se revela que los componentes comunicativos de Angelelli y la situación real impactaron en las concepciones de calidad de ambos actores. / This paper aims to identify users’ and interpreters’ perspectives on interpretation quality to determine the relationship between users’ needs and interpreters’ quality principles. Pöchhacker’s (2013) dimensions of interpreting and Angelelli’s (2000) communication model were thus taken as a reference. The study was carried out in seven conferences with simultaneous interpreting in Lima, Peru between August 2018 and June 2019. 10 interviews were conducted with interpreters and 86 questionnaires with two ranking-order scales of 11 linguistic and extra-linguistic criteria were administered to users and interpreters. The results show that the respondents agreed on the positive rating of correct pronunciation, fluency, and confident voice. However, they differed in the rating of sense consistency and use of correct terminology. It is revealed that Angelelli’s speech components and the real context had an impact on users’ and interpreters’ perspectives on quality. / Tesis

The central focus of this Master's thesis was to provide a concise overview of the academic work of the contemporary Spanish interpreter and interpreting historian, Jesús Baigorri Jalón. We carried out an in-depth analysis of his work, accompanied by the critical reception of his two key publications. In the introductory part of our thesis, we focused on the author's methodology and placement in Spanish and Czech academic contexts. Then, we elaborated a comprehensive, chronological overview of the author's two main monographs and outlined the main topics discussed in Baigorri's studies. We also focused on the author's contribution to the translation and interpreting studies, his research methodology and its potential to serve as an inspiration to Czech researchers.

The roles of signed language interpreters in post-secondary education settings in South Africa

Signed language interpreting in South Africa has not received much academic attention, despite the profession having undergone major transformation since the advent of democracy. This study aims to create a better understanding of signed language interpreters’ behaviour in one specific setting in South Africa – post-secondary education. During the researcher’s own practice as an educational interpreter at a post-secondary institution, she experienced role conflict and found little information available to assist her in making professional decisions on which direction to take. This provided the impetus to embark on this research. The study begins by outlining the field of liaison interpreting and educational interpreting, and examining the existing literature regarding the interpreter’s role and norms in interpreting. It then goes on to examine authentic interpreted texts, filmed in actual lectures in post-secondary settings. These texts are analysed with reference to interpreter shifts and deviations from the source text, with particular focus on interpreter-generated utterances (additions), borrowing (fingerspelling), omissions (both errors and conscious choice) and various types of collaboration between the interpreter and primary participants. These shifts are examined in more detail to explore whether they indicate any change in the interpreter’s role. Further, interpreters’ own views about their practice, elicited from individual interviews, enable the reader to understand how the interpreters view the role(s) that they fulfil. The research will provide information for interpreter trainers about the roles assumed by SASL interpreters in higher education and provide a platform from which to scaffold future educational interpreter research and training. / Linguistics / M.A. (Linguistics)

Afghan Muslim Male Interpreters and Translators: An Examination of Their Identity Changes and Lived Experiences During Pre and Post-Immigration to the United States During the Afghanistan War (2003-2012)

This research examined the lived experiences of an Afghan Muslim male participant group. This study explored their immigration from a Southwest-Asian, highly non-secular society to a Western-style, liberal, secular nation-state. Further, this research was an examination of Muslim male identity as an attribute that is closely related to lived experiences, environment and cultural assimilation. Also, this study looked closely at the meanings that this Afghan Muslim male immigrant group attached to identity, as well as exploring their unique narratives during pre-immigration and post-immigration periods. This qualitative research study used narrative methods to unearth the lived experiences of five Afghan Muslim male citizens. These participants immigrated to the U.S. while serving as interpreters and translators for the coalition forces during the Afghanistan War between 2003 and 2012. Several researchers have examined Muslim immigration from Eastern to Western nations, focusing on their adaptation, assimilation, and developmental patterns. The research objective of this study was slightly different and important to social science in that it focused on how a select group of Afghan Muslim males conceptualized their own sense of identity and how their notion of identity was shaped and influenced by their own pre- and post-migration experiences. To this end, the discoveries in this study revealed that the nature of the identities for many in this study may be deemed more blended and in some instances renegotiated, holding onto parts of their core native identities while embracing aspects of the cultural, ethnic, and social elements of their new host land that fit within their own individual frame of reference.

The aim of the present theoretical-empirical thesis is to present the topic of court interpreting for non-native speakers, focusing on criminal proceedings in the Czech Republic. At first, the study looks into the context of Czech court interpreting, taking into account interpreters' tasks in individual stages of criminal proceedings and concentrating on communication situations in which non-native speakers take part. The topic of the second chapter is interpreting for non- native speakers in general. This chapter consists of findings and conclusions of studies published by Michaela Albl-Mikasa as well as other authors who address the topic of conference interpreting through lingua franca. The third chapter looks into interpreting for non- native speakers in the area of court interpreting. It is based on an analysis of findings obtained by lingua franca research in the field of conference interpreting against the background of general court interpreting theories. The topic of the present thesis is professional ethics in interpreting. The thesis consists of two main parts - a theoretical part and empirical research. The theoretical part first defines ethics in terms of philosophy and introduces some key subject- related concepts. Subsequently, it focuses on professional ethics and characterizes the main documents that set out desirable standards of conduct within a certain profession - codes of ethics and codes of conduct. This general introduction is then followed by an overview of research into ethics in interpreting studies, and a brief outline of the history of codes of ethics for interpreters. The following chapters discuss ethical challenges in different interpreting settings and briefly introduce major Czech and foreign professional organizations of interpreters. The core of the theoretical part compares ten selected codes of ethics of different Czech and international professional interpreters organizations; based on this comparison, basic rights and obligations of interpreters are identified and further analysed in the empirical part. To perform the analysis, is necessary to take off from major democratic theories of the twentieth century and to analyze the social participation in the 1988 Constitution. Then it deals specifically about the policy councils, their legal prevision, their participation in the formulation and monitoring of public policies. Before the multi subjective conflicts, characteristic of the impasses that deal with social rights that are object of public policies, Judiciary is required to make use of an hermeneutical model in which interpretation does not consist in an act of syllogism. Therefore, this paper analyzes the philosophical hermeneutics of Gadamer and its influence on the Structuring Law Theory of Müller, which is part of the constitutional concept of concretion. Thus, it is necessary to introduce elements of reality in the hermeneutical process in order to build the order for the concrete case. Approaches the idea that the real interpreters of the Constitution are all the ones it addresses to (Häberle) to conclude that, considering the constitutional prevision when the judicialization of the impasses between the Executive and councils takes place, the court must reverse the burden of argument, so that it fits this Power to check that the board's decision is not the one that best targets the promotion of social rights / O presente trabalho se propõe a investigar o caráter das decisões dos conselhos gestores de políticas públicas e a postura do Poder Judiciário, quando diante da judicialização de um impasse entre conselho e Executivo, isto é, quando houver negativa, por parte do gestor, de aplicar a política deliberada pelo conselho. Para realizar sua análise, parte-se de algumas das principais teorias democráticas do século XX e analisa a participação social na Constituição de 1988. Em seguida, trata especificamente dos conselhos de políticas, sua previsão legal, sua participação na formulação e fiscalização das políticas públicas. Diante dos conflitos plurissubjetivos, característicos dos impasses que versam sobre direitos sociais objeto de políticas públicas, impende que o Judiciário faça uso de um modelo hermenêutico em que a interpretação não consista ato de silogismo. Por isso, o trabalho analisa a hermenêutica filosófica de Gadamer e sua influência na Teoria Estruturante do Direito de Müller, da qual faz parte a noção de concretização constitucional. Assim, é preciso que se introduzam elementos da realidade no processo hermenêutico, a fim de construir a norma para o caso concreto. Les difficultés linguistico-culturelles chez les praticiens et les étudiants en interprétation de conférence (français/anglais-arabe) / Cultural and Linguistic Difficulties among Interpreters and Students in Conference Interpreting (French/English-Arabic)

La présente thèse tente d’identifier les difficultés et les spécificités linguistico-culturelles marquantes qui relèvent de l’environnement de l’interprétation (français/anglais-arabe) aussi bien en pratique qu’en formation. L’interprète arabophone utilise le dialecte au quotidien mais doit s’exprimer en arabe littéraire moderne dans les conférences internationales. Il fait alors face à une variété d’arabe non acquise depuis la naissance qui est sensiblement différente des dialectes locaux, notamment sur le plan morphosyntaxique. Ainsi, l’interprète arabophone peut être amené à déployer plus d’efforts que l’interprète francophone ou anglophone dans la production de son discours (traduisant quant à eux vers leur langue maternelle) et à travailler à proximité de la saturation cognitive (Gile, 2009). Nous avons collecté des données par trois moyens : a) un questionnaire rempli par 35 praticiens et enseignants de l’interprétation de conférence, b) deux types d’enquêtes par entretien, l’une auprès de 12 interprètes professionnels, et l’autre auprès de 14 étudiants et 8 enseignants-praticiens appartenant à 4 établissements et c) par l’analyse d’un corpus d’enregistrements de l’interprétation de 2 discours. Les explorations empiriques réalisées ont permis d’identifier un certain nombre de difficultés linguistiques que rencontrent les praticiens en activité ainsi que les enseignants et les étudiants participant à une formation d’interprètes. Nous y retrouvons notamment ce qui concerne la redondance dans le discours arabe et les difficultés qui découlent de la spécificité de l’arabe. L’ALM, notamment en phase de production orale, ne serait pas considéré comme une langue « A » au sens de l’AIIC. Il s’apparenterait plutôt à une langue « B ». Tous les participants ont mis l’accent sur la difficulté de la maîtrise de leur langue « A », l’ALM. L’analyse de corpus a notamment soulevé un grand nombre de fautes et de maladresses linguistiques dans le produit oral des interprètes professionnels. De ces constats, il résulte qu’il est important d’améliorer la maîtrise active de l’ALM chez les interprètes et les étudiants. Le perfectionnement linguistique dont il est question ne peut se faire par une simple immersion linguistique dans un pays arabophone. Il faudra en effet des efforts ciblés. / This thesis attempts to identify the key linguistic-cultural difficulties and specificities that are relevant to the interpretation environment (French/English-Arabic) in both practice and training. The Arabic interpreter uses the dialect in daily life, but has to speak modern literary Arabic in international conferences. He/she then faces a variety of Arabic which is not acquired since birth. It is significantly different from local dialects, in particular on the morphosyntactic level. Thus, the interpreter may have to make more efforts than the French or English interpreter in producing his speech (translating to their mother tongue) and working close to cognitive saturation (Gile, 2009). To carry out this study, we collected data in three ways: a) a questionnaire completed by 35 practitioners and teachers of conference interpreting, b) two types of interview surveys, one with 12 professional interpreters, and the other with 14 students and 8 teacher-practitioners from 4 institutions and c) by analyzing a the interpretations of 2 discourses. Empirical explorations led us to identify a number of language difficulties faced by practitioners as well as teachers and students participating in an interpreting training. We find in particular what concerns redundancy in the Arab discourse and the difficulties that arise from the specificity of Arabic. MLA, especially in the oral production phase, cannot be considered as an “A” language within the meaning of the AIIC, and is more like a “B” language. All participants emphasized the difficulty of mastering their “A” language, MLA. In particular, our corpus analysis revealed a large number of mistakes and linguistic blunders in the oral product of professional interpreters. From these findings, it is important to improve the active control of MLA among interpreters and students. The linguistic improvement in question cannot be done by a simple linguistic immersion in an Arabic-speaking country. It will indeed require targeted efforts.
