The value of first report statements in the investigation of rape

Humbulani, Vhulahani 02 1900 (has links)
In this research, the first report statement is evaluated, in order to establish whether the information contained in the first report statement is considered during rape investigations. The researcher explored how investigators and public prosecutors utilise the first report statements in order to ensure an effective criminal justice system. The researcher made use of (a) an empirical design, because of the limited information available on the research topic, and (b) a qualitative research approach – which enabled real-life observations. Simple random sampling was used to select 28 investigators of rape and sexual offence related cases, four (4) prosecutors attached to sexual offences courts, and one (1) advocate from Gauteng North High Court. Data was obtained through interviews, a literature study, and case docket analysis. / Police Practice / M.Tech. (Forensic Investigations)

Utilisation of the financial intelligence centre as a crime intelligence source

Mostert, Derick 11 1900 (has links)
The research was conducted as a result of the researcher‟s concern that the possibility exists that members of the different law enforcement agencies in South Africa might have a misconception about the mandate and functions of the Financial Intelligence Centre. If such a misconception in fact exists, it poses a huge challenge towards fruitful co-operation among the Centre and the different law enforcement agencies. The researcher identified certain practical problems, namely, that investigators are not aware of the types of intelligence that the Centre could provide them with, and that investigators might not be informed about the specific procedures to follow when they need to request intelligence from the Centre. The research has shown that, in the past, the Centre has been a useful source of crime intelligence concerning a range of predicate offences including narcotics, fraud and tax related crimes. The research has further found that, although the majority of participants gained a lot of experience in law enforcement and investigations, they had limited awareness about the Financial Intelligence Centre and its functions. This research project studied the utilisation of the Financial Intelligence Centre as a crime intelligence source. / Police Practice / M. Tech. (Forensic Investigation)

Personal description : an investigation technique to identify suspects

Sefanyetso, Justice Thabang 11 1900 (has links)
This study investigates the use of personal description as an investigation technique to identify suspects. The study entails qualitative data obtained from interviews with investigators, literature, as well as case studies. The study found that personal description can be used as an investigation technique to identify suspects. There are eight techniques that the investigator should apply in order to identify suspects or perpetrators of a criminal act. To conduct effective investigation, it is important for the criminal investigators to be familiar with the techniques of identification and the application thereof. The description of offenders plays an important role as far as arresting offenders is concerned. The methods used - or to be used - by investigators to describe a person were also discussed. It is important that the investigators should work with other government departments, private investigators and security officials, to implement this technique in order to identify and arrest offenders. / Police Practice / (M. The value of photography in the investigation of crime scenes

Mokwena, Rakgetse John 04 1900 (has links)
It is said that "one picture is worth a thousand words". This implies that pictorial testimony has more value than ten witnesses. The witnesses may give different views on the same issue, and, furthermore, they may forget some of the facts. Due to human error, omission, and defects such as old age and sight problems, they are contributing factors for people to give different accounts of the same events. The study entails the various roles of photography, such as recording the crime scene and that photography is considered as evidence in court. Investigators may use them for both suspects' and witnesses' interviewing. Furthermore, witnesses and victims may use them to refresh their memories, and the court uses them to prove the matter at issue. This indicates that photographs have a major role to play in the judicial and investigation processes. / Police Practice / M. Tech. (Forensic Investigation)

Guidelines for formulating questions to interview applicants of identity documents

Mabasa, Christopher 02 1900 (has links)
The aim of this research is to investigate guidelines for formulating questions to interview applicants of identity documents, for the use of the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) officials during the interviewing of applicants of identity documents. The research further intends to share and introduce a number of important concepts, namely: Interviewing, Crime Investigation, Information, Identity Docu-ment, Immigration Officer, Department, and Case File. The research will explain the objectives of investigation and guidelines for developing proper questions for use by officials of the DHA, to test information on new applicants of identity documents. The object of the investigation is to obtain information to prove the correct techniques on how to interview appli-cants of identity documents. It further explains that criminal investigation can be defined as the process of discovering, collecting, preparing, identifying and presenting evidence, to deter-mine what happened and who is responsible. Interviewing is defined as the process of gathering testimonial evidence through interviewing, and it has a predetermined objective, namely discovering the truth about the matter under investigation. It is also explained that during guidelines for formulating relevant questions to use to enable the official or immigration officer to formulate test questions that are clearly understood better by DHA. The relevant questions should be formulated by DHA officials, so that the questions get to the heart of the issue. This can enable the official to avoid applicants submitting fraudulent documents which could later result in litigation. The research will assist in decreasing the high rate of corruption, and also litigation, as these represent the main problem of the research. / Criminology and Security Science / M. Tech. Étude biologique et physico-chimique de verre bioactif / bisphosphonates et de vitrocéramique pour le comblement des pertes osseuses chez les petits animaux / Biological and physicochemical studies of bioactive glass / bisphosphonates and glass ceramic in the filling of animals bone defect

Mosbahi, Siwar 30 May 2016 (has links)
This work focuses on the biological and physicochemical evaluations of two biomaterials: a bioactive glass associated to risedronate (46S6-xRIS) and a porous glass ceramic doped with zinc oxide and titanium nitride noted 46S6-10Zn-2Ti. The first is a hybrid material composed of bioactive glass (46S6) and a bisphosphonate, the risedronate with different contents (xRIS) with x=8, 12 and 20%. The second is a ceramic glass having a porosity, which has been created following the elimination of N after heating. Physicochemical analysis after the in vitro essays of 46S6-xRIS show the modification of the bioactivity kinetic of these composites proportional to the quantity of risedronate added to the 46S6. The in vivo analyses were also conducted in the 46S6-10Zn-2Ti. This glass ceramic was implanted in the femoral condyles of osteoporotic rats. This phenomenon was created after its irradiation at different doses of γ-rays. The biological investigations after irradiation show an imbalance between the lipid peroxidation and antioxidants enzymes. The implantation of 46S6-10Zn-2Ti in bone tissue restored the oxidative balance. The histological study manifests the restoration of bone tissue. However, this restoration decreased with the rising of γ-rays doses. For the physiochemical exploration, several complementary techniques were used to evaluate the kinetic of ossification. The porous glass ceramic was evaluated also in the bioconsolidation process after implantation in rabbit. The X-ray Micro-Computer Tomography (mCT) shows the resorption of the 46S6-10Zn-2Ti and the osseointegration of bones cells in the biomaterial pores. Moreover, the histological study illustrates that the degradation and the resoption of the 46S6-10Zn-2Ti is almost total. The SEM highlights the degradation of the 46S6-10Zn-2Ti and its replacement by an apatitic deposit. The MAS-NMR spectra of ³¹P and of ²⁹Si illustrate a progressive degradation of 46S6-10Zn-2Ti in favor of the development of a biological apatite.

The value of docket analysis in stranger rape investigations : a case study in Port Elizabeth

Van der Watt, Marcel 11 1900 (has links)
In this research docket analysis is evaluated as an investigative tool in stranger rape cases. Owing to the fact that serial rapists mostly reside within the category of stranger rape cases, the researcher attempted to test the value of docket analysis in the identification of patterns and similarities among such cases which could be indicative of serial rape activity. A rape matrix was used as a docket analysis tool to analyse the content of 184 stranger rape cases which was closed as ‘undetected’. In addition to investigative shortcomings in the case dockets, the researcher identified 15 stranger rape cases which presented six unique patterns among them. These identified patterns could be indicative of serial rape activity. / Criminology / M.Tech. (Forensic Investigation)
