Corrosion of steel bridge Girder anchor bolts

The research objectives for this project were to explicitly define the anchor bolt corrosion problem in the state of Georgia and recommend action to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The bearing assembly of concern is the plate bearing assembly, in which carbon steel and/or bronze plates are anchored by either carbon steel or stainless steel anchor bolts. Inspection report data revealed that anchor bolt corrosion was ubiquitous for all environments in Georgia; the problem was reported for 27% of the steel girder bridges throughout the state. Based on a synthesis of the field investigations, bolt failure analyses, laboratory experimental testing, and review of GDOT inspection report surveys, the corrosion of carbon steel anchor bolts is caused universally by concentration cell corrosion. Other corrosion mechanisms of concern are galvanic and crevice corrosion, which are both enhanced by the current bearing design. Corrosion protection provided through zinc galvanization cannot sufficiently protect the carbon steel bolt for its entire service life. Corrosion potential and cyclic polarization data confirmed that ASTM Type 304, Type 316, Type 2101, and Type 2205 were protected from concentration cell and localized corrosion in the simulated bearing environment. Therefore, it is recommended that the stainless steel anchor bolts of these types be use in future designs and that the bolts should be electrically separated from all dissimilar metals using a Nylon or Teflon washer to prevent preferential corrosion of carbon steel. It is further recommended that the bronze lube plate should be eliminated entirely and that the bearing type should be a reinforced elastomeric bearing. Maintenance of existing sliding plate bearings should include regular cleaning by brushing away debris from the bearing surfaces, and bridges with carbon steel anchor bolts should be retrofitted to provide additional lateral restraint according to current maintenance procedures.

Estudo do reforço de edifícios em alvenaria resistente por perfis metálicos

Estima-se que existam cerca de seis mil edifícios tipo caixão na região metropolitana do Recife que apresentam estrutura em situação de risco. Cerca de doze edifícios colapsaram espontaneamente, treze foram demolidos e dezenas de outros foram constatadas manifestações patológicas graves, motivando suas interdições. Este trabalho apresenta uma metodologia para o enfrentamento do problema, contemplando não apenas os aspectos técnicos, mas questões referentes aos riscos. Com isso se espera eliminar o estigma dessas edificações e resgatar a dignidade e segurança dos moradores dos prédios, através de um trabalho que tenham como base conceitos técnicos e científicos consagrados na Engenharia. A solução para o problema trata-se de uma proposta de criação de uma estrutura metálica a ser implantada nos prédios construídos em alvenaria resistente, em casos de falência das alvenarias que originalmente serviram de suporte para cargas que atuam na referida obra. Esta estrutura foi modelada e dimensionada pelo programa computacional Metálica 3D, apresentando resultados que responderam com total segurança todas as ações de carregamento que atuam nesse tipo de edificação para a modelagem adotada. Espera-se que a solução aqui proposta tenha um impacto social bastante significativo, dado a ocorrência de diversos acidentes com edifícios desta natureza, construídos em alvenaria resistente com a utilização de tijolos de vedação, vulgarmente conhecidos como prédios caixão / One can estimate that there are approximately six thousand four storey residential box-type buildings in Recife Metropolitan Region which presents structures in risk situation. Among those buildings, twelve collapsed spontaneously, thirteen were demolished and in many others it was observed serious pathologies that demanded restrictions to their occupation. This work presents a methodology to deal with this problem, contemplating technical aspect as well as risks issues. One expects to eliminate the stigma of these buildings and to contribute to give dignity and security back to their inhabitants through a work that must be done based on technical and scientific concepts accepted worldwide in structural engineering. The solution to the problem consists of a proposal to create a steel structure to be installed in such building that, in case of collapse of their support walls, should carry all loads that act on them. This solution was modeled and designed using a software called Metálica 3D, showing results that assure security to all load cases that usually act in this type of structure. One expects that the proposed solution can generate significant social impact, due to the occurrence of several accidents with this type of buildings constructed with non structural bricks carrying loads beyond its own weight

As pontes de pequeno e médio porte têm relevância significativa para o desenvolvimento econômico e social do país, pois devem assegurar o trânsito de pessoas, veículos e matérias primas e escoamento dos produtos gerados. No entanto, o estado precário em que se encontra grande parte das pontes em vias urbanas e rurais, dificulta o deslocamento, causando desconforto e insegurança aos usuários. Além disso, elevam-se os custos de transporte para os produtores e de manutenção para as prefeituras. Diante desta realidade, busca-se nesse trabalho, avaliar o estado de conservação de pontes de pequeno e médio porte em vias urbanas e rurais na região de Campinas (SP). Desta forma, um correto embasamento teórico do assunto permitirá a adoção da acertada atitude frente a um quadro patológico. Sendo assim, esta pesquisa foca uma ampla revisão bibliográfica abrangendo o estado-da-arte do projeto de pontes e da identificação das patologias nas estruturas metálicas, de concreto armado e/ou protendido e de madeira, e também visa estabelecer conceitos que serão aplicados quando da escolha do método corretivo. Além do embasamento teórico, buscou-se constatar "in loco" a manifestação de patologias em nove pontes na região do município de Campinas (SP), apresentando-se sugestões quanto à profilaxia e correção em cada caso. Para colaborar com as sugestões, foram desenvolvidos dois projetos de pontes tipo anexados à pesquisa, os quais são de estruturas mistas de aço-concreto e de madeira. Finalmente observa-se a partir da presente pesquisa, que existe a necessidade de um mapeamento rigoroso das pontes urbanas e rurais com vistas de elevar a vida útil e garantir maior segurança à sociedade. / Abstract: The existence of a great number of bridges with pathological problems motivates the research on this subject. The small and medium bridges have a main importance to the economic and social development of the country, due to they must guarantee the people, vehicle, and raw material transit and the flow of manufacture products. However, the precarious condition that a great part of the bridges is in the city and in the rural area and has difficult the movement, causing discomfort and insecurity to people. Besides, there is an increase of the cost of transport to the producer and of the maintenance to the town hall. In the presence of this reality, this work intends to evaluate the conservation state of small and medium bridges in the city and in the rural area in the region of Campinas (SP). Thus, a consistent theoretical base about this subject will permit to choose a right attitude on a pathological way and this research focuses on a complete review of bibliography covering the state-of-art of the bridge design and the pathological identify of steel, reinforced or prestressed concrete and wood structures and also will establish concepts that will be applied to the choice of a corrective method. Apart from this theoretical base, it was presented, "in loco", the pathological demonstration of nine bridges in the region of Campinas (SP), and proposed suggestions about the treatment and correction in each case. To collaborate with these suggestions, two pattern projects of bridges, which were of concrete and steel composite structure and of wood, were developed and annexed to this research. Cold-Formed Steel Bolted Connections without Washers on Oversized and Slotted Holes

The use of the cold-formed steel sheet bolted connections without washers is so significant; however, the North American Specifications for the Design of Cold Formed Steel Structural Members, NASPEC, doesn't provide provisions for such connections. The bearing failure of sheet and the shear failure of sheet were considered in this study. For the sheet shear strength, it was found that the NASPEC (2007) design provisions can be used for oversized holes in both single and double shear configurations and for the double shear connections on short slotted holes. For the sheet bearing strength, a new design method was proposed to be used for low and high ductile steel sheets. The method was compared with the NASPEC and the University of Waterloo approach. Washers were still required for single shear connections on short slotted holes. Besides, connections using ASTM A325 bolts yielded higher bearing strength than connections using ASTM A307 bolts.

Nominal Shear Strength and Seismic Detailing of Cold-formed Steel Shear Walls using Steel Sheet Sheathing

In this research, monotonic and cyclic tests on cold-formed steel shear walls sheathed with steel sheets on one side were conducted to (1) verify the published nominal shear strength for 18-mil and 27-mil steel sheets; and (2) investigate the behavior of 6-ft. wide shear walls with multiple steel sheets. In objective 1: this research confirms the discrepancy existed in the published nominal strength of 27-mil sheets discovered by the previous project and verified the published nominal strength of 18 mil sheet for the wind design in AISI S213. The project also finds disagreement on the nominal strength of 18-mil sheets for seismic design, which is 29.0% higher than the published values. The research investigated 6-ft. wide shear wall with four framing and sheathing configurations. Configuration C, which used detailing, could provide the highest shear strength, compared to Configurations A and B. Meanwhile, the shear strength and stiffness of 2-ft. wide and 4-ft. wide wall can be improved by using the seismic detailing.

Cold-Formed Steel Bolted Connections Using Oversized and Slotted Holes without Washers

In cold-formed steel (CFS) construction, bolted connections without washers for either oversized or slotted holes may significantly expedite the installation process and lower the cost. However, the North American Specification (AISI S100, 2007) for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members requires washers to be installed in bolted connections with oversized or slotted holes. A research project (Phase 1) sponsored by American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) was recently completed at the University of North Texas (UNT) that investigated the performance and strength of bolted CFS connections with oversized and slotted holes without using washers. The research presented in this thesis is the Phase 2 project in which the bolted CFS connections were studied in a broader respect in terms of the failure mechanism, the material thickness, and the hole configurations. Single shear and double shear connections without washers using oversized holes, oversized combined with standard or slotted holes were experimentally examined. Combined with Phase 1 results, the Phase 2 gives a comprehensive evaluation of the behavior and strength of bolted CFS connections with oversized and slotted holes without using washers. Revisions to the existing AISI North American Specification requirements for bolted connections are proposed to account for the reduction in the connection strength caused by the oversized and slotted hole configurations without washers. Specific LRFD and LSD resistance factors and ASD safety factors for different hole configurations in terms of the new proposed methods were presented.

High Fidelity Modeling of Cold-Formed Steel Single Lap Shear Screw Fastened Connections

Cold-formed steel connections are commonly fastened using self-tapping self-drilling screws. The behavior of these connections can differ based on the screw manufacturer or the cold-formed steel product used, both of which have a large selection available for use in industry. Because of their popularity and the many possible variations of these connections, researchers have frequently tested screw connections to characterize their behavior. However, repeatedly conducting this type of experiment is time consuming and expensive. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to create finite element models that can successfully predict the behavior of single lap shear screw connections, a common connection type used in cold-formed steel framing. These models were created using the finite element program Abaqus/CAE. To validate these models, test results from Pham and Moen (2015) were used to compare the stiffness, strength, and failure mode of multiple connections. A parametric study is also conducted to determine the influence of contact parameters on the behavior of the model. The results showed that all models consistently had good agreement with the connection stiffness and that most of the models also had good agreement with the peak load and failure mode of the v tests. These results were also compared to the design equations available for screw connections from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). This comparison revealed that the models are more successful at predicting screw connection behavior than AISI, and thus work is required to improve the accuracy of AISI’s design equations. The eventual goal of this work is to develop a procedure to build and validate models without requiring test data. This work continuing in the future can lead to recommendations to improve AISI’s design equations and to implement the behavior of the connections into large cold-formed steel framing models such as diaphragms or shear walls.
