Sustainability today is an important schedule between government policies and regional programs, and more recently has been inserted in the business environment, gradually consolidating in the capital market. In this context, in the last two decades have created various indices of corporate sustainability in order to assess the sustainability performance of companies listed on stock exchanges. In 2005, the Stock Exchange, Commodities and Futures Exchange (BM&F BOVESPA) launched the Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) the first in Latin America. This research aims to analyze the social dimension of ISE and identify points of interface with the human development theory of Amartya Sen, using the approach of instrumental freedoms in a microeconomic context. To complement and fill gaps, this research will be used a qualitative approach and non-financial to analyze the social dimension of corporate sustainability index of the Brazilian stock exchange. For this goal to be achieved, the documentary research methods were used in the questionnaire of the social dimension of the ISE, expert panel, which included the participation of five specialists in the field of sustainability of different types of organizations, and content analysis, which it was used to organize the information collected. The main results indicate that: (a) it is possible and coherent to apply the approach of the theory of individual freedoms in a microeconomic context; (b) corporate sustainability indices clearly demonstrate further gains for financial gain; (c) a better performance in the social dimension provides some intangible gains for companies; (d) the importance of the area of sustainability in business as well as its integration with other areas involved; and (e) the freedoms and stakeholders most cited were respectively: (i) transparency guarantees (33.3%) and political freedom (30%); (ii) business (100%), employees (83%) and government (67%). The results obtained in this study allowed a series of analyzes on the ISE BM&FBOVESPA focusing on the social dimension, paving the way for future research.

Automatic Generation of Hardware for Custom Instructions

Necsulescu, Philip I January 2011 (has links)
The Software/Hardware Implementation and Research Architecture (SHIRA) is a C to hardware toolchain developed by the Computer Architecture Research Group (CARG) of the University of Ottawa. The framework and algorithms to generate the hardware from an Intermediate Representation (IR) of the C code is needed. This dissertation presents the conceiving, design, and development of a module that generates the hardware for custom instructions identified by specialized SHIRA components without the need for any user interaction. The module is programmed in Java and takes a Data Flow Graph (DFG) as an IR for input. It then generates VHDL code that targets the Altera FPGAs. It is possible to use separate components for each operation or to set a maximum number for each component which leads to component reuse and reduces chip area use. The performance improvement of the generated code is compared to using only the processor’s standard instruction set.

Nicolai, Anja 20 May 2009 (has links)

Layers of Laughter: Investigating the Appeal of Jippensha Ikku’s Hizakurige, an Early Modern Japanese Bestseller

White, Oliver January 2023 (has links)
This dissertation examines a cluster of texts centered on Hizakurige 膝栗毛, or Shank’s Mare, by Jippensha Ikku 十返舎一九 (1765-1831), the first eight installments of which were published annually between 1802 and 1809 in the city of Edo, now Tokyo. The series follows its ruffian protagonists Yajirobē 弥次郎兵衛 and Kitahachi 喜多八 on a picaresque journey, as they make their way down the Tōkaidō highway 東海道 (literally, “Eastern Seaboard Road”) on a largely spurious pilgrimage to the Grand Shrine at Ise. Hizakurige rapidly established Ikku as a major figure in the world of gesaku 戯作 (roughly, “vernacular popular writing”) at the turn of the 19th century, and remains one of the most famous, enduringly-popular pieces of gesaku ever written, known at least in passing to most people in contemporary Japan. Despite this, there has been no dissertation-length study of Hizakurige written in English until now. Accordingly, I investigate the roots of its immense popularity by examining the nuanced layers of laughter and enjoyment—or warai 笑い—that Yaji and Kita’s stories have brought to the readers of Hizakurige over the last two centuries. To do so, I explore a variety of sources, media, and genres that Jippensha Ikku drew upon to build the multifaceted and dynamic world of Hizakurige-related texts—or Hizakurigemono 膝栗毛物—with the groundbreaking first eight installments serving as the unifying nadir for my inquiries. I start with an in-depth introduction to Ikku’s life and his works, detailing his experiences as a writer, illustrator, playwright, poet, traveler, and, eventually, as a person with physical disabilities, which reveal much about the tone, style, and contents of Hizakurige. I examine scholarship on Ikku’s work has to date, and propose frameworks centered on the intertwined structural and compositional concepts of sekai 世界 (literally, “world”) and shukō 趣向 (roughly, “innovation”) in gesaku as conceptualized by Nakamura Yukihiko 中村幸彦 (1911-1998). The second chapter revolves around the role played by kyōka 狂歌 (comic poetry) in Ikku’s development as a creator of gesaku. Centered on two compilations of kyōka edited and illustrated by Ikku—Ikyoku suzukuregusa (Rustic Rhymes: Rustling in the Pines, 1799) and Ikyoku azuma nikki (Rustic Rhymes: A Diary of Eastern Times, 1800)—the chapter makes use of a framework that hinges on shukō to analyze the structural and poetic techniques that kyōka poets had at their disposal to create meaning, develop narratives, and, ultimately, instill their poetry with wit and amusement. I take up the topic of Nansō kikō tabisuzuri (Travels to Nansō with a Glittering Ink-stone: The Gem-sights of the Journey, 1802) in the third chapter. Although it is an illustrated, kyōka-centric, two-protagonist travelogue written by Ikku in the same year as the first installment of Hizakurige, Tabisuzuri appears to have been a total flop. To discover why this might be, I examine the bibliographic and biographical context in which Tabisuzuri came to be written, explore how the poetically dense paratextual apparatus of its various prefaces function, and analyze a series of linked scenes from the main body of Tabisuzuri that are the direct progenitors for two of Hizakurige’s most infamous episodes. In the fourth chapter, I consider Hizakurige in the context of travel writing, beginning with the prefatory matter of Hizakurige, then discussing the influence of two groups of travel texts upon the development of Hizakurige: first, Chikusai 竹斎 (1621), by Toyama Dōya 富山道冶 (date of birth unknown -1634), and Tōkaidō meisho ki 東海道名所記 (Record of Famous Sites of the Tōkaidō, 1659), by Asai Ryōi浅井了意 (c. 1612-1691); and, second, a trio of illustrated guidebooks (Meisho zue 名所図会) written in 1780, 1796, and 1797 by Akisato Ritō 秋里離島 (fl. 1770-1830). In a comparative analysis, I show how the two-person protagonist structure of Hizakurige draws on models frequently seen in travel writing, and investigate how Yaji and Kita’s characterization is enlivened through their depiction both as equals and as lovers. I also investigate how and why Ikku makes increasingly extensive—but decreasingly innovative—use of motifs taken from the illustrations in Ritō’s Meisho zue series. Finally, in the fifth chapter I examine how Hizakurige is deeply influenced by shukō drawn from performative genres—particularly kyōgen—and how Hizakurige is imbued with a kind of “latent performativity” that offers a hybrid mode of engagement with the text that sits at the intersection between “reading” and “performing.” I contend that this latent performativity comes about through the operation of Hizakurige’s shukō, both as individual, discrete shukō that function in the context of a single moment of the text, and as more extended, structural “macro-shukō” that shape broader swaths of the text’s character and have a greater impact upon the development of Hizakurige’s sekai. Accordingly, I investigate how Ikku imitates and innovates upon shukō drawn from two kyōgen plays—Dobukacchiri どぶかっちり (“Kerplunk”) and Kitsunezuka 狐塚 (“Fox Mound”), exploring the key characteristics of these two kyōgen pieces, and carrying out comparative analyses of the relevant scenes in Hizakurige. Over the course of the dissertation, I attempt to offer a variety of answers to one central question: why does Hizakurige matter, and what is its significance for our understanding of the development of gesaku in the late Edo period (1603-1868)? I contend that Hizakurige is important not just because of its immediate success, or its subsequent influence on surrounding textual and dramatic genres, or its enduring popularity, but also because it demonstrates the need for a more fruitful approach for the study of early modern Japanese popular literature: one predicated not just on genre, but on the intertwined interactions of sekai and shukō.

Method verification of two point-of-care testing platforms: the Abbott’s iSTAT and Timik’s EPOC blood analysis systems.

Jonsson, Sofie January 2024 (has links)
Background: A blood analysis with the particular focus of the blood gas status is often performed on critically ill patients to investigate whether there are any potential metabolic or respiratory causes underlying their condition. Utilizing a point-of-care analysis system for blood analysis close to the patient can enable faster analysis and thus accelerate medical decision-making. The aim of this project was to validate two point-of-care blood analysis instruments, EPOC and iSTAT. The blood analysis comprises 13 parameters (e.g. blood gases, hemoglobin, electrolytes), and some of which are calculated based on the original parameters.   Method and materials: The study was performed on blood samples taken from 20 volunteers after informed consent. The volunteers were regular patients who were referred to the hospital to leave a blood test: at the phlebotomy department the patients were informed about the purpose of the study, and for those who agreed, additional sample designated for this study were taken. The samples were initially analyzed using the two point-of-care instruments (Epoc and iSTAT) and thereafter with two verification instruments (ABL90-flex PLUS and Cobas Pure), which were located in the laboratory of Bollnäs hospital. Precision measurements were conducted by doing five replicates for four of the parameters (sodium, base excess, pCO2, potassium) on five different occasions.  Result: Both the Epoc and iSTAT-blood analysis system displayed satisfactory correlation with the reference instruments for each analyzed parameter. Further, the precision measurements showed that both Epoc and iSTAT displayed equivalent variation coefficient (CV%) as the reference methods.  Conclusion: The result of this study showed that the point-of-care instruments performed well and displayed a high correlation with the reference instruments.

Member Perceptions of Informal Science Institutions Graduate Certificate Program: Case Study of a Community of Practice

Ball, Lois A. 01 January 2012 (has links)
Abstract This research attempted to understand the experiences of a cohort of informal and formal science educators and informal science institution (ISI) community representatives during and after completion of a pilot graduate certificate program. Informal science educators (ISEs) find limited opportunities for professional development and support which influence their contributions to America's science literacy and school science education. This emergent design nested case study described how an innovative program provided professional development and enabled growth in participants' abilities to contribute to science literacy. Data were collected through interviews, participant observations, and class artifacts. The program by design and constituency was the overarching entity that accounted for members' experiences. Three principal aspects of the ISI certificate program and cohort which influenced perceptions and reported positive outcomes were (1) the cohort's composition and their collaborative activities which established a vigorous community of practice and fostered community building, mentoring, and networking, (2) long term program design and implementation which promoted experiential learning in a generative classroom, and (3) ability of some members who were able to be independent or autonomous learners to embrace science education reform strategies for greater self-efficacy and career advancement. This research extends the limited literature base for professional development of informal science educators and may benefit informal science institutions, informal and formal science educators, science education reform efforts, and public education and science-technology-society understanding. The study may raise awareness of the need to establish more professional development opportunities for ISEs and to fund professional development. Further, recognizing and appreciating informal science educators as a diverse committed community of professionals who positively influence science education for everyone is essential.

The purpose of this work is to verify if balanced growth is in any way associated with a company’s sustainable performance. Assuming that unbalanced growth is a risk factor not only for a company but also for all its stakeholders, generating economic, social and environmental impact, it is to be expected that sustainable businesses would present a more balanced growth. The balanced growth indicator reflects the level of concern with how much pressure the company’s growth is putting on its resources and the way they are financed. The evaluation of a company’s sustainable performance should be broad, with emphasis on the concept of the Triple Bottom Line and on meeting the needs of all its stakeholders. In this study, what constitutes sustainable performance is defined in two ways: adherence to Bovespa’s corporate governance levels and participation in ISE-Bovespa, the corporate sustainability index created by the São Paulo Stock Exchange. The objectives are: to verify if the balanced growth indicator varies less in companies considered sustainable by the two criteria, assessed separately and combined, than in companies not deemed sustainable by the same criteria; and to verify if these same companies presented less variability of the balanced growth indicator during the second time frame of analysis than during the first. The two time frames are separated by the release of the first ISEBOVESPA portfolio in 2005. Data from listed companies pertaining to the period between December 1999 and December 2009 was used. The companies were divided in groups and the study focused on the variability of the balanced growth indicator, measured by standard deviation, within those groups, considering that all groups present means close to one. A group with low variability of the balanced growth indicator displays more concern with the measured use of its resources, reflecting an attitude in compliance with the notion that companies should contribute to the cause of sustainable development. The confirmation of ten of the twelve hypothesis raised by this analysis indicates that there is in fact a link between balanced growth and sustainable performance.

Poloautomatizovaný návrh vysoce výkonných číslicových obvodů s Xilinx FPGA / Semi-automated Design of High-performance Digital Circuits with Xilinx FPGAs

Houška, David January 2021 (has links)
