The Aesthetics of Islamic Architecture & the Exuberance of Mamluk Design

The Mamluk period was the most exuberant in Egypt. It lasted from 1250 to 1517, a short period of only 267 years but highly dynamic in art and architecture. No historian has given a documented and defendable reason for this rise yet many spoke of the origins of the Mamluks in Eastern Europe, Anatolia, and the Caucus. Their excellence in design was directly related to the diversity of their population in Egypt and Syria but more specifically in Cairo. A new aesthetic developed in their art and architecture and became uniquely Mamluk. It was a culmination of design influences coming from as far away as Persepolis in the East and al-Andalus in the West. Good trade relations with Catalonia played an important role in the transmission of design ideas and the prosperity of the Mamluks. The doctorate thesis is a study of the sources of Islamic design in several regions and their development. It analyzes examples from the pre-Islamic, Islamic and post-Islamic periods to show how design shared inspirational sources. It traces the aesthetics of Islamic architecture, using twentieth century Spain as a case study, to show how this affected the development of modern and contemporary architecture. / El període Mameluc era el més exuberant a Egipte. Va durar des·de 1250-1517, un curt període de només 267 anys, però molt dinàmic en l'art i l'arquitectura. Cap historiador ha donat una raó documentada i defensable per aquest augment però molts van parlar dels orígens dels mamelucs a Europa de l'Est, Anatòlia i el Caucus. La seva excel·lència en el disseny estava directament relacionada amb la diversitat de la seva població a Egipte i Síria, però més específicament al Caire. Una nova estètica desenvolupada en el seu art i arquitectura, i va esdevenir únic mameluc. Va ser la culminació d'influències de disseny procedents de llocs tan llunyans com Persépolis a l'est i al-Andalus a l'Oest. Les bones relacions comercials amb Catalunya van exercir un paper important en la transmissió de les idees del disseny i la prosperitat dels mamelucs. La tesi doctoral és un estudi de les fonts de disseny islàmic en diverses regions i el seu desenvolupament. S'analitzen exemples dels períodes pre-islàmic, islàmic i post-islàmic per mostrar com el disseny comparteix fonts d'inspiració. Traça l'estètica de l'arquitectura islàmica, amb l'Espanya del segle XX com un estudi de cas, per mostrar com va afectar al desenvolupament de l'arquitectura moderna i contemporània.

Islamic finance is entering into a new pattern. It is deemed that Islamic finance should take initiative to meet the increasing needs of microfinance with aim of alleviating poverty and to help the poor people in their distress. Concept of Islamic Microfinance is being used to fulfill the demands of microfinance in the developing countries. Different models of Islamic finance are proposed to be used in microfinance activities to help the poor people for betterment of their personal life and to initiate the small business for the overall growth of the economy. But profit and loss sharing (Mudarabah) model is being criticized due to high risk involvement. Due to high risk factor, proper monitoring is deemed necessary for the smooth running of the contract. Our current research tends to investigate the underlying risk attached with Profit and Loss sharing project. As per theory of Profit and loss sharing financing all the risk is to be borne by the investor of the capital i.e. microfinance institution. But monitoring itself is not risk free and can result in expenses that would surpass the original price of the sanctioned loan. In the long run and at very end, we are hopeful that our research findings would play an important role to overcome the issue of monitoring in profit and loss sharing loans in microfinance. / Islamisk finansiering går in i ett nytt mönster. Det anses att islamisk finansiering bör ta initiativ för att möta de ökande behoven av mikrofinansiering med syfte att minska fattigdomen och att hjälpa fattiga människor i deras nöd. Begreppet islamiska Mikrofinans används för att uppfylla kraven från mikrofinansiering i utvecklingsländerna. Olika modeller för islamisk finansiering föreslås att användas i mikrofinansieringsverksamhet att hjälpa de fattiga för förkovran i deras personliga liv och att inleda ett litet företag för den totala tillväxten i ekonomin. Men vinst och förlust delning (Mudarabah) modell är att bli kritiserad på grund av hög risk engagemang. På grund av hög riskfaktor är korrekt övervakning anses nödvändigt för att fungera väl i kontraktet. Vår nuvarande forskning tenderar att undersöka den underliggande risken fäst med Resultaträkning dela projekt. Per teori av vinst och förlust dela finansieringen alla risker skall bäras av investeraren av kapitalet, dvs mikrofinansiering institution. Men övervakningen i sig inte är riskfritt och kan resultera i kostnader som skulle överträffa det ursprungliga priset på sanktionerade lånet. I det långa loppet och på slutet, vi hoppas att våra forskningsresultat kommer att spela en viktig roll för att lösa frågan om övervakning i resultaträkningen dela lån mikrofinansiering.

Islamic insurance Takaful and its applications in Saudi Arabia

Takaful is an Arabic term meaning solidarity, which is used to describe a system of Islamic insurance that functions as an alternative to conventional insurance. Takaful, as a form of insurance, is entering a fast growing global market, promoted by the growth of the Asian economies and economic prosperity in the Middle East. The Takaful system is based on the principle of cooperation or mutual assistance, and is Tabarru (Voluntary), meaning that the attendant risks are spread collectively across the group of volunteers. The Takaful system is best understood as a pact (or policy) ascribed to by a group of participants who choose to jointly guarantee themselves against loss or damage suffered by individual signatories, as confirmed in the policy. The prediction is that Takaful will be the default choice for citizens in Islamic countries in the near future. The combination of the system’s financial efficacy, combined with principles underwritten by religious correctness has accentuated the attractiveness of this, and similar, Islamic banking and financial products to Muslims. By examining the Saudi insurance sector, which is a market leader in the region, this thesis delivers a brief history of insurance in general and of the Saudi insurance legal framework in particular, and by so doing sheds light on Islamic insurance Takaful applications worldwide. It also engages in an evaluation of insurance products available in Saudi Arabia to determine whether the facilities offered by the insurance companies operating in the country incorporate obstacles and obstructions, which may impact on the effectiveness of governmental regulations and supervision in relation to setting a legislative framework. This influences the extent to which the foundations for the insurance market are secured in Saudi Arabia. The aim of the present study also leads to some suggestions and recommendations for future practice.

Virtually from the outset of the 1978--79 Islamic Revolution in Iran, scholars began to study the event from different social, political and economic angles. Yet, the rapid speed of the Revolution, its predominantly Islamic character, and the numerous changes that have occurred during the last nineteen years remain sources of mystery to many students of this area. The goals and philosophy of education and its relation to the basic foundations of the Revolution is one issue however that has been given less consideration. / This thesis is an attempt to identify and study the cultural foundations and those religious values underlying the educational system of today's Iran. The study examines some of the elementary school textbooks from both the Pahlavi and Islamic Republic eras, contrasting Pahlavi educational policy, which tended towards secularization, Westernization and de-Islamization of the country, with the attempt of the Islamic Republic to Islamize all aspects of society, including schools. The study especially looks at the relation between Islamic culture, religion and the curriculum. The study stresses that school plays a fundamental role in the Islamization of the post-Revolutionary Iranian society. How one defines Islamization, however, is crucial. This concept is clarified through a scrutiny of the process of Islamization visible in textbook reform by focusing on the spiritual, moral, social and political values in some school texts.

The development of the translation movement in Islamic history was a long, intricate movement which encompassed a large number of people over a long period of time. It is the objective of this paper to assess the historical setting which gave rise to this movement as well as to evaluate why it was embraced. Moving onward, the paper will then move to a more detailed examination of six translators, in an effort to evaluate their contribution to the movement. While doing this, an inventory will be conducted of the works which were translated in the three disciplines of astrology, philosophy, and medicine by these translators in an attempt to answer the question of why the selection process was so specific and what perhaps were the criteria for these choices.
