Lower limb muscle function in children and adolescents with Fontan circulation : A cross-sectional study / Muskelfunktion i nedre extremitet hos barn och ungdomar med Fontan cirkulation : En tvärsnittstudie

Introduction: Impaired isometric muscle strength and muscle endurance in adults with Fontan circulation has previously been reported. However, the knowledge if corresponding impairment is present in children and adolescents with Fontan circulation is scarce. Aim: The aim was to examine the isometric muscle strength and muscle endurance of the lower limbs in children and adolescents with Fontan circulation in comparison to age and sex matched controls. Method: In this cross-sectional study 43 children and adolescents (6-18 years) with Fontan circulation and 43 controls were included. Isometric knee extension and plantar flexion muscle strength was assessed using dynamometry (Newton:N). Unilateral isotonic heel-lift until exhaustion was used for evaluation of lower limb muscle endurance. Analysis on group level (n=43) and for the subgroups 6-12 years (n=18) and 13-18 years (n=25) was performed. Results: On group level the children and adolescents with Fontan circulation had impaired isometric plantar flexion strength for the left leg compared to controls (393.9±181.1N vs. 492.5±241.6N, p=0.04). In addition, they had impaired isometric knee extension strength bilaterally (right 222.8±101.1N vs. 293.0±164.9N, p=0.02, left 220.7±102.7N vs. 279.5±159.1N, p=0.05). In contrast, lower limb muscle endurance did not differ. In subgroup analysis, the impaired isometric strength was only present in the group of adolescents. Conclusion: Adolescents with Fontan circulation had impaired isometric muscle strength compared to controls. However, no corresponding differences were found in children. Further, lower limb muscle endurance did not differ. This implies that the impaired isometric muscle strength may develop during adolescence whereas the impaired muscle endurance may occur later. / Del av en multicenterstudie

The Effect of Practice on Learning and Transferring Goal Directed Isometric Contractions across Ipsilateral Upper and Lower Limbs

The purpose of this thesis was to determine whether practice-induced adjustments and retention of a goal directed isometric motor accuracy task were similar between ipsilateral upper and lower limb and whether there is an ipsilateral transfer between upper and lower limbs. In addition, this thesis project aimed to determine whether motor output variability and the activity of the involved agonist and antagonist muscles could predict any of the above stated changes. Sixteen young adults (8 men, 8 women; 22.1 or - 2.1 years) performed 80 trials of goal directed isometric contractions that involved accurately matching a target force of 25% MVC in 200 ms, either with the upper limb or the lower limb followed by the other limb. After an interval of 48 hours, 10 trials similar to the practice trials were performed to examine retention. Feedback of performance was provided in the form of a force-time trajectory along with numerical error values for force and time on each trial. End-point error was quantified as the absolute deviation from the targeted force and time. Motor output variability was quantified as the SD of force, SD of time to peak force and SD of force trajectory. The practice-induced adjustments for force and time endpoint accuracy were similar for the two limbs, however, two days later, retention of the force accuracy was better with the upper limb compared with the lower limb. Practice-induced reduction and practice-to-retention increase in force and time endpoint error were predicted by respective changes in peak force and time to peak force trial-to-trial variability for both limbs. In addition, the changes in accuracy were predicted by the changes in the activity of the involved agonist and antagonist muscles. Nonetheless, the changes in muscle activity differed between the two limbs. The adjustments in muscle activity were also different during the practice session despite the fact that the rate of improvement was similar for the two limbs. Finally, there was an asymmetric transfer of force accuracy from the lower limb to the ipsilateral upper limb, which was associated with the changes in motor output variability. The upper limb, which is inherently less variable as compared to the lower limb, may have retained the task better due to the formation of a stronger muscle synergy (or stronger internal model) to perform the contractions with accuracy. The lower limb, on the other hand may have formed a weaker internal model due to the greater interference from amplified signal-dependent noise (motor output variability) or an alternative motor plan, which may have been concerned primarily with the minimization of motor output variability instead of formation of a muscle synergy to perform the contractions accurately.

A Study On Sixth Grade Students

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the contributions of spatial visualization and spatial orientation tasks regarding 2D representations of 3D objects and isometric drawing to the development of sixth grade students&rsquo / spatial reasoning. The study also aimed to investigate students&rsquo / performances on spatial tasks during the classes and to explore their views and feelings about the spatial tasks. Data were collected from 24 6th grade students in a private school located in Ankara. The design of the research was first person inquiry where the researcher was also the teacher at the same time. During five class hour the topic was covered with spatial tasks developed by the researcher.Spatial Orientation Test (SOT) and Achievement Test on 2D Representations of 3D Objects and Isometric Drawing (AT) were administered to the students before and after the taskto evaluate the effect of instruction. Wilcoxon signed rank test was run to test data. Statistical analyses revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in students&rsquo / spatial reasoning development between pre-test and post-test. Another finding of the study was related to the progress of students&rsquo / performances in the visual reasoning tasks. As the time passed, students got more successful in completing even the more advanced tasks.The findings of the study indicated that in order to develop students&rsquo / visual reasoning abilities teachers need to provide them opportunities to practice with the visual tasks supported with the effective use of manipulative. In addition to this, teachers should create activities and design their lessons in a way that where the students are the actors and actively participated in the class.

Isomorphisms of Banach algebras associated with locally compact groups

The main theme of this thesis is to study the isometric algebra isomorphisms and the bipositive algebra isomorphisms between various Banach algebras associated with locally compact groups. Let $LUC(G)$ denote the $C^*$-algebra of left uniformly continuous functions with the uniform norm and let $C_0(G)^{\perp}$ denote the annihilator of $C_0(G)$ in $LUC(G)^*$. In Chapter 2 of this thesis, among other results, we show that if $G$ is a locally compact group and $H$ is a discrete group then whenever there exists a weak-star continuous isometric isomorphism between $C_0(G)^{\perp}$ and $C_0(H)^{\perp}$, $G$ is isomorphic to $H$ as a topological group. In particular, when $H$ is discrete $C_0(H)^{\perp}$ determines $H$ within the class of locally compact topological groups. In Chapter 3 of this thesis, we show that if $M(G,\omega_1)$ (the weighted measure algebra on $G$) is isometrically algebra isomorphic to $M(H,\omega_2)$, then the underlying weighted groups are isomorphic, i.e. there exists an isomorphism of topological groups $\phi:G\to H$ such that $\small{\displaystyle{\frac{\omega_1}{\omega_2\circ\phi}}}$ is multiplicative. Similarly, we show that any weighted locally compact group $(G,\omega)$ is completely determined by its Beurling group algebra $L^1(G,\omega)$, $LUC(G,\omega^{-1})^*$ and $L^1(G,\omega)^{**}$, when the two last algebras are equipped with an Arens product. Here, $LUC(G,\omega^{-1})$ is the weighted analogue of $LUC(G)$, for weighted locally compact groups. In Chapter 4 of this thesis, we show that the order structure combined with the algebra structure of each of the Banach algebras $L^1(G,\omega)$, $M(G,\omega)$, $LUC(G,\omega^{-1})^*$ and $L^1(G,\omega)^{**}$ completely determines the underlying topological group structure together with a constraint on the weight. In particular, we obtain new proofs for a previously known result of Kawada and results of Farhadi as special cases of our results. Finally, we provide an example of a bipositive algebra isomorphism between Beurling measure algebras that is not an isometry. We conclude this thesis with a selective list of open problems. / February 2016

Išstudijavus mokslinius literatūros šaltinius, pastebėta, kad kūno temperatūros, o tuo pačiu ir raumens vidinės temperatūros padidėjimas sukelia daug fiziologinių reakcijų žmogaus organizme, tačiau vis dar mažai darbų, nagrinėjančių aklimacijos (aklimacija �� tai dirbtinėse sąlygose (laboratorijoje) sukelta ilgalaikė aklimatizacija) hipertermijai, sukeltos dirbtiniu būdu, poveikį žmogaus fiziologinių rodiklių kaitai, raumens išvystomai maksimaliai valingai jėgai. Nepavyko rasti duomenų kaip maksimalios valingos jėgos metu keičiasi raumenų elektrinis aktyvumas, priklausantis nuo aklimacijos hipertermijai. Pagrindinis šio darbo tikslas buvo nustatyti ir įvertinti dirbtinės aklimacijos hipertermijai poveikį �����mogaus organizmui. Uždaviniai: Nustatyti ir įvertinti žmogaus fiziologinių rodiklių (rektalinę, odos bei kūno temperatūras, fiziologinį stresą, netenkamą kūno svorį, širdies susitraukimų dažnį ir šiluminį stresą) kaitą aklimacijos hipertermijai laikotarpyje: prieš pasyvų šildymą, šildymo metu ir po šildymo; nustatyti aklimacijos hipertermijai poveikį raumenų atsparumui nuovargiui; nustatyti aklimacijos hipertermijai poveikį raumenų centriniam aktyvacijos koeficientui; nustatyti ir įvertinti aklimacijos hipertermijai poveikį šlaunies raumens elektriniam aktyvumui. However not many research projects analyzing the impact of the acclimation (In vitro(in laboratory) related long term acclimatization) to hyperthermic environment, created in imitative way, neither on the fluctuation of man’s vital functions nor on the maximum voluntary muscle strength, could be found. Secondly, it should be noted, that none of the above mentioned sources provided the information on the change of muscle electric activity at the moment of its maximum voluntary strength. The aim of the study: to determine and compare the low frequency fatigue of the legs’ muscles of 12–13 years old boys during the isometric and eccentric-concentric physical exercises. The objectives of the study: 1. To determine the exertion of low frequency fatigue during isometric exercises in boys. 2. To determine the exertion of low frequency fatigue during eccentric-concentric exercises in boys. 3. To compare the exertion of low frequency fatigue among isometric and eccentric-concentric exercises in boys. Subjects. Healthy boys (n = 6) aged 12–13 (12,4 ± 0,6) who do not participate in sports regularly but attend the classes of physical education twice a week. The rest period between the studies was three weeks. The tension was set up at 50 % MVS level. After that the values of the contractions and relaxations of the muscles were registered as follows: 1. Kontroliuojamo kartotinio pasyvaus šildymo poveikis aklimacijos požymių kaitai ir neuroraumeninei funkcijai / Controllable repeated passive heating effect to acclimation symptoms and neuromuscular function

Žmogaus adaptacija prie karščio yra visapusiškai nagrinėjama ir plati problema (Hori, 1978). Literatūroje gausu tyrimų, nagrinėjančių hipertermijos poveikį neuroraumeninei funkcijai po fizinių pratimų karštyje (Nybo & Nielsen, 2001) ar pasyvaus šildymo (Thomas et al., 2006; Todd et al., 2005). M. M. Thomas et al. (2006) nustatė, kad pasyvaus šildymo metu, padidinus vidinę kūno temperatūrą iki 39,5 oC, sumažėja maksimali izometrinė pėdos lenkiamųjų raumenų jėga ir tai įtakoja raumenų aktyvacijos iš CNS sumažėjimas. Anksčiau atlikti tyrimai patvirtina, kad aukšta organizmo vidinė temperatūra paveikia CNS ir jos galimybę aktyvuoti dirbančius raumenis (Nybo & Nielsen, 2001; Todd et al., 2005). Organizmui aklimuojantis prie karščio, sumažėja TREKT, ŠSD, FSI ir padidėja prakaitavimas, kas lemia mažesnį fiziologinį-terminį stresą hipertermijos sąlygomis (Brazaitis ir kt., 2009; Brazaitis ir Skurvydas, 2010), tačiau sunku rasti tyrimų, nagrinėjančių kaip tai paveikia neuroraumeninę funkciją. M. Brazaitis ir A. Skurvydas (2010) nustatė, kad po 7 pasyvaus šildymo procedūrų (~44 oC vandenyje po 45 minutes), kurios buvo vykdomos kas antrą dieną 2 savaičių laikotarpyje, organizmas aklimavosi prie karščio, bet tai nepaveikė centrinio ir periferinio nuovargio MVJ-2min izometrinio krūvio metu hipertermijos sąlygomis. Mūsų atliktame tyrime buvo naudota unikali pasyvaus šildymo metodika (siekiama TREKT padidinti iki 39,5 0C, maksimalus šildymo procedūros laikas 120 min., šildymo procedūros... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Human adaptation to heat is comprehensive of a broad problem (Hori, 1978). The literature is rich in research of analyzing the influence of hyperthermia on neuromuscular function, after exercising in the heat (Nybo & Nielsen, 2001) or passive heating (Thomas et al., 2006; Todd et al., 2005). M. M. Thomas et al. (2006) ascertained that the increase to 39,5 oC of core temperature in passive heating, reduces maximal isometric force of plantar flexors and this is influence of the reduction on voluntary muscle activation from CNS. Earlier studies show, that high core temperature affects CNS and its ability to activate working muscles (Nybo & Nielsen, 2001; Todd et al., 2005). Heat acclimation occurs with reduced rectal temperature, heart rate, physiological strain index and increased sweat rate, which causes reduction in physiological-thermal stress in the hyperthermia (Brazaitis ir kt., 2009; Brazaitis ir Skurvydas, 2010), but it is difficult to find studies how this affects the neuromuscular function. M. Brazaitis & A. Skurvydas (2010) found out that after 7 passive heating procedures (in ~44 oC water, 45 minutes each), which was carried out every second day for two weeks, heat acclimation occurred, but did not change the central and peripheral fatigue during a 2-min MVC in hyperthermia.
