The Misplaced Role of “Utilitarianism” in John Stuart Mill’s Utilitarianism

Wright, David 2012 August 1900 (has links)
This thesis aims to provide the appropriate historical context for interpreting John Stuart Mill's Utilitarianism. The central question considered here concerns two views of Mill's intentions for Utilitarianism, and whether the work should be read as Mill arguing for his own version of utilitarianism, or as an ecumenical document expressing and defending the views of many utilitarians. The first view, labeled the orthodox view, as defended by Roger Crisp, is probably the most commonly held view as to how to interpret the document. The second view, labeled the revisionist view, is defended by Daniel Jacobson in a recent article. By examining Mill's place in the history of utilitarianism, his journals, correspondence, and other writings leading up to and after the publication of Utilitarianism, this thesis argues in support of the revisionist position. Furthermore, it is argued that certain portions of the book deserve special consideration apart from other chapters, and this is taken to have implications for the future of research in Mill?s thought. This thesis has four chapters including the first introductory chapter, which outlines the motivations guiding the orthodox and revisionist views. The second chapter provides a general exposition of Utilitarianism, as well as an outline of the primary evidence supporting the orthodox and revisionist positions. The third chapter is a defense of the revisionist position, and it highlights the specific biographical context in which Utilitarianism was composed, as well as evidence from Mill's writings, correspondence, and journals suggesting that he saw the need to write a general defense of the principle of utility and elaborate his theory of justice. This chapter also includes a historiographical analysis of Mill's biographers, which suggests that Utilitarianism is not viewed by Mill's biographers as being especially central to his considered views on utilitarianism. Finally, the chapter includes a section on the early reception and criticisms offered against Utilitarianism, which partly explains why the book has come to be interpreted as it has. The final chapter reviews the evidence for the revisionist position and explains the implications for Mill scholarship in light of the findings of this study.

In this dissertation we study elementary (or good) gradings in upper block triangular matrix algebras and the corresponding graded polynomial identities. An elementary grading by a group G on the algebra A = UT(α1, α2, ..., αr) of upper block triangular matrices is determined by an n-tuple in Gn, where n = α1 + · · · + αr. It will be proved that the elementary gradings on A determined by two n-tuples in Gn are isomorphic if and only if the n-tuples are in the same orbit in the canonical bi-action on Gn with the group Sα1 × · · · × Sαr acting on the left and the group G acting on the right. These results will be used to prove that under suitable hypothesis (for example if the group G has prime order) two upper block triangular matrix algebras, graded by the group G, satisfy the same graded identities if and only if they are isomorphic (as graded algebras).

Predikce sekundární struktury RNA sekvencí / Prediction of RNA secondary structure

Klímová, Markéta January 2015 (has links)
RNA secondary structure is very important in many biological processes. Efficient structure prediction can give information for experimental investigations of these processes. Many available programs for secondary structure prediction exist. Some of them use single sequence, the others use more related sequences. Pseudoknots are still problematic for most methods. This work presents several methods and publicly available software and the implementation of minimum free energy method is described.

In this work we study the gradings and the graded polynomial identities of the upper n × n triangular matrices algebra Un(K) over a eld K, which is always in nity. The case n = 2 will be rstly studied, for which will be shown that there is only one nontrivial grading and we shall describe the graded identities, codimensions and cocharacters. Transitive and Intransitive Verbs in Ki Idioms

Hoye, Nathaniel 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine idiomatic structures with ki in the ki-wo [transitive verb] and ki-ga [intransitive verb] constructions. It is argued that for Japanese language learners, it is crucial to be able to understand and produce ki idioms, because they are frequently used in everyday speech. There are often misconceptions regarding ki in the West for those who are fans of Japanese culture due to the influence of martial arts and anime, which paint ki as a spiritual energy that can be controlled and developed. However, upon examining the above mentioned idiomatic structures with ki, it is clear that ki can be expressed as both controllable by the subject of ki (transitive), as well as a thing that acts of its own accord and is spontaneous (intransitive). This thesis somewhat corroborates the studies of W. M. Jacobson, Zoe Pei Sui Luk , and Yoshihiko Ikegami by arguing that intransitive constructions are often used in Japanese, and examining both transitive and intransitive expressions with ki is significant to understanding the meanings produced in ki expressions. It is hoped that analyzing 37 transitive and intransitive idiomatic structures with ki will help Japanese language learners not only understand the syntactic and semantic aspects of transitivity in the Japanese language, but also to help these L2 learners conceptualize the abstract noun ki, which can be defined in so many different ways in a dictionary.
