The focus of the thesis is translation strategies of the food items introduced in the Lithuanian and French versions of Joanne Harris’ gourmet novel Chocolat (1999). The Lithuanian translation is made by Galina Baužytė-Čepinskienė (2004), while the French translation is produced by Anouk Neuhoff (2000). At the beginning, the new genre of fiction, particularly gastromance, or gourmet literature is defined as well as translation strategies of culture-specific items, specifically food, are described. In addition, the variety of translation methods examined by different scholars is introduced. The translation strategies proposed by Eirlys E. Davies (preservation and preservation as literary translation; addition and addition in the footnote; omission; globalization; localization (as specification, domestication or orthographical adaptation) as well as transformation and creation) are applied while analysing the translation of the food items in the novel. In order to highlight the significant grammatical aspects of the languages, the issues of the article usage and formation of syntactical structures are discussed. The food items are classified into two main categories: dishes and their ingredients and chocolate assortment and other types of dessert. The aim of the analysis is to examine the prevailing translation methods used in translation of the food items as well as to investigate whether Lithuanian and French translators tend to translate them differently or similarly.
In... [to full text] / Šio darbo tikslas – išanalizuoti valgių pavadinimų vertimo strategijas Joanne’os Harris „gurmaniško“ romano „Šokoladas“ (1999) lietuviškame ir prancūziškame vertime. Romaną lietuviškai išvertė Galina Baužytė-Čepinskienė (2004), o prancūziškai - Anouk Neuhoff (2000). Darbe pristatomas naujas „gurmaniškosios“ literatūros žanras, analizuojamas kultūrinių realijų, ypač maisto terminų, vertimas. Kadangi skirtingi mokslininkai skirtingai įvardija panašias vertimo procedūras, aptariama jų įvairovė ir pasirenkamos Eirlis E. Deivis (Eirlys E. Davies) pasiūlytos strategijos. Darbe įvertinami anglų, lietuvių ir prancūzų kalbų skirtumai gramatiniame ir sintaksiniame lygmenyse: aptariama artikelių vartosena bei sintaktinių struktūrų daryba. Maisto terminai suklasifikuoti į patiekalus ir jų ingridientus bei šokolado asortimentą ir kitus desertus. Darbe siekiama nustatyti dažniausiai pastebimas valgių pavadinimų vertimo procedūras bei ištirti, ar Galina Baužytė-Čepinskienė ir Anouk Neuhoff vartoja skirtingas ar panašias maisto terminų vertimo strategijas.
Nustatyta, kad verčiant patiekalus bei jų ingridientus vertėjos naudoja panašias vertimo procedūras, iš kurių dažniausia literatūrinis vertimas. Skirtingai išverstų maisto terminų atvejai taip pat sutinkami: Galina Baužytė-Čepinskienė verčia valgių pavadinimus į lietuvių kalbą, o Anouk Neuhoff juos perkelia nepakeistus, globalizuoja arba pritaiko kultūrinį ekvivalentą. Doctor of Philosophy / Dingo Media examines the development of media events using as a case study one of Australia’s most widely known criminal investigations, the disappearance of Azaria Chamberlain at “Ayers Rock”. Considering the case as a blueprint for the way mass media events develop and evolve in the late capitalist era, this thesis suggests that the event marks a turning point in negotiation of the public sphere and Australian national identity. Using an original model, I trace from the 1980s five phases through which news stories pass in their evolution as modern media events by comparing the Chamberlain saga to contemporary cases involving “controversial” women, Schapelle Corby, Joanne Lees and Pauline Hanson. The first phase examines the emerging practice of news workers focusing on personalities rather than events; the second phase analyses both the formation of counter-publics protesting the conviction, and the development of a dialogic connection between media and publics; the third phase investigates the rise of a modern celebrity industry promoting “ordinary” individuals into subjects of media discourse; the fourth phase considers the process of mythic production surrounding the Chamberlain case as related to processes of nation-building in the late 1980s; finally, the fifth phase critiques the prevalent view that, through continual retelling, the event has suffered a loss of meaning. Axiomatic to this study will be the politics of representation, how the media records, organises and mythologises information, as well as the interaction between texts and audiences.

<p>Martina Haag’s method of self-mockery used in her chronicles is characterized by her wish to live up to various ideals. This essay brings out the subversive power of self-deprecatory hu-mor expressed in her book Hemma hos Martina. The author’s strategies and kinds of humor are being studied, leading up to what this humor accomplishes. General theories on humor, by Mary Ann Rishel, Maria Ohlsson, Henri Bergson, Joannne R. Gilbert and Simon Critchley are being applied to find the essence of her craftsmanship in writing comedy. The analysis also goes more closely into the style and language, to give a deeper understanding of how she creates jokes, and also how she relates to her ideals through language. The main thrust of the analysis, though, builds on theories on self-deprecatory humor. Haag is included into Joanne R. Gilbert’s theory on self-deprecation and The Whiner within the field of stand-up comedy.</p><p>Some American feminist critics have rejected self-deprecatory humor as being anti-feminist, stating that women applying this particular kind of humor merely reinforce stereoty-pes, and put themselves down. This paper objects to those critics, leaning on Haag’s book. I wish to show that Haag is not demeaning towards herself, but towards the cultural norms and expectations in our present society. In this context, I show how Haag manages to demystify and criticize ideal representations of women, by lampooning them and revolting against them. In this way, her book turns into a satirical critique of cultural values. My essay illustrates how Haag objectifies herself, making regular use of stereotypes. This is necessary, since these two elements are essential to most humor. Haag confirms stereotypes to make people laugh. This laughter brings about awareness in the reader, making Haag’s work a social critique of current values and norms concerning women.</p>
