[en] THE LOGOS IN PHILO OF ALEXANDRIA: MAIN INTERPRETATIONS / [pt] O LOGOS EM FÍLON DE ALEXANDRIA: PRINCIPAIS INTERPRETAÇÕES

DAX FONSECA MORAES PAES NASCIMENTO 06 November 2003 (has links)
[en] Philo of Alexandria, a first century Jewish philosopher, appears as the first thinker who tried to conciliate biblical contents and western philosophical tradition. In this way, he is better known by his Doctrine of the Logos, about which many controversies are still waiting to be solved. This Dissertation claims the task to examine the meanings of that Logos in Philos works, dealing with its connections to philosophical tradition and Jewish sources as well. We pay regard to its significance to Christian theology and to the role played by philosophical tradition, especially by Platonism as by Stoicism. Otherwise, the Philos thinking still shows itself original and marked by contributions external to the hellenistic culture: Jewish ones. This combination has, by result, provocative ideas on most important metaphysical, theological, ethical and epistemological questions, revealing Philo as a very weighty thinker in the History of Philosophy. For this, the Dissertation aims to restore many questions that we see not yet properly answered. Also questioned are the role played by philosophy in the human search for wisdom and the role played by faith in the attainment of virtue. More strictly concerning philonic Logos, it means Gods action in the world, an instrument for Creation, pattern and example for the world and Gods image, the revealing Word and the sole way by which human soul acquires true knowledge, that comes from the knowledge of God. This power does not belongs to man, but its a gift from God, a grace.

Josephus' reasons for the Jewish War

Benson, Derrick 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis I will examine and discuss the reasons given for the Jewish War of AD 66 - 70. Reasons put forward by modern scholars specializing in the study of the works of Flavius Josephus are examined and discussed. However, the bulk of my study centres on the reasons that Flavius Josephus supplies for the war as found in his major work Bellum Judaicum. One is lead to the conclusion that he firmly believes that reasons on the human and transcendent planes contributed to the catastrophic events that lead to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. The worldview of this Jewish priest, general and accomplished historiographer was strongly influenced by the religious tenets of the Torah and the past history of the Jewish nation. He cannot countenance the wicked and evil deeds committed shamefacedly by his people against the clear standards that God had given to the nation, and believes that retribution by God will follow. He cannot forget occasions on the past when God intervened in the affairs of his nation by using a pagan world power to accomplish the purposes of God. He sees a similar recurrence of the events that lead to the destruction of the Jerusalem and the Temple in 587/6 BC being manifested in the Jewish War of AD 66 - 70.

Rastreando olhares judaicos: as obras de fotógrafos alemães em exílio no Brasil / Tracking Jewish eyes: the works of German photographers in exile in Brazil

Feder, Leonardo 04 June 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to discuss whether there is a Jewish view expressed in photographs, produced in Brazil, by authors with links to Judaism, and how it manifests itself. The hypothesis of the research is that it exists, but, without being able to be characterized by a general rule, it must be found in the analysis of singular cases, considering, for example, how the authors\' estrangement is reflected in their images. In order to confirm this assumption, life will be presented and the works will be interpreted of five photographers, born in Germany, exiled in Brazil because of the rise of Nazism; four of them are Jewish Alice Brill, Werner Haberkorn, Hans Gunter Flieg and Peter Scheier and one married to a Jew Hildegard Rosenthal. All registered the city of São Paulo, being these images the focus of the analysis, except in the case of Flieg, whose photos to be studied will be the industrial ones, since they are the most important of his production. These authors, with a hybrid identity, expressed a foreign look at the reality they portrayed, using modern styles imported from Europe, such as the New Vision, New Objectivity and Machine Aesthetics, contributing enormously, thus, to innovate Brazilian photography.
