Developing a Design Space Model Using a Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Schema in a Product Lifecycle Management System to Capture Knowledge for Reuse

Parametric strategies for design automation and optimization can have a big impact on engineering design. When parametric tasks and optimization frameworks and methods are combined, theses strategies can be used to make up what is known as a multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) schema. Knowledge of a design space can be modeled by using a MDO schema to represent the design process. However, current MDO frameworks used to create this schema lack the scope to capture enterprise wide knowledge for reuse and collaboration. Concurrent with the development of MDO, many companies are moving toward increased use of product lifecycle management (PLM). More applications are being integrated into PLM as its usage increases; however, it has not to date been able to fully embrace the sophisticated knowledge model demands of engineering design. It has functioned primarily as a data storage and electronic email and tracking system. This thesis proposes to integrate an MDO knowledge representation in the form of a design space model with a PLM system to provide knowledge management for the product design process throughout the enterprise. In this thesis a solution has been developed by leveraging PLM workflow management, and parametric PLM strategies. The PLM workflow management module was customized with action handlers, adding the ability to automate engineering tasks such as updating models and performing analysis. An optimization action handler was also added that iterates design processes by duplicating the entire workflow job and initiating it with updated inputs in order to explore and improve the design. This thesis proposes a new approach to PLM and MDO framework usage that enables the complete representation of a design space with absolute, enterprise wide reuse. Because of the synergy that is created between PLM and MDO through this approach, both software providers and users in industry are looking at it as a way to achieve their greatest challenges. This thesis achieves the common knowledge representation that industry has been actively pursuing, because of this industry leaders have been impressed and believe that this approach will quickly take hold and usher in a new era for product design.

Postprocessing is like data preparation one of the most challenging tasks in data mining that users must deal with. It is desirable to simplify it so that the path to results is as fast and efficient as possible. The extension of the EasyMiner research project to filter the association rules by similarity to the knowledge-based rules, should be helped in this respect, which is the subject of this diploma thesis. The objectives were accomplished by a detailed analysis of the default state of EasyMiner in conjunction with a thoroughly thought-out implementation proposal without increasing the demands on the server or user of the application. An analysis of general practices and the author's deep knowledge of Internet application issues served to do this. The future deployment of this extension to the EasyMiner infrastructure will benefit from a clearer and more efficient work with the Knowledge base part, where it will no longer be necessary to evaluate the interest in the same or similar rules and the user will be able to focus directly on the quality of the results. This thesis is divided into chapters as a detailed description of how a similar problem can be approached in any other project that works with a certain form of knowledge base. Initial input analysis with access search for comparison of the various elements passes through a description of the default application state to a specific solution design. This should be a guideline for the implementation itself and for the testing of the proposed and implemented procedures.

The Design of an Oncology Knowledge Base from an Online Health Forum

<p>Knowledge base completion is an important task that allows scientists to reason over knowledge bases and discover new facts. In this thesis, a patient-centric knowledge base</p> <p>is designed and constructed using medical entities and relations extracted from the health forum r/cancer. The knowledge base stores information in binary relation triplets. It is enhanced with an is-a relation that is able to represent the hierarchical relationship between different medical entities. An enhanced Neural Tensor Network that utilizes the frequency of occurrence of relation triplets in the dataset is then developed to infer new facts from</p> <p>the enhanced knowledge base. The results show that when the enhanced inference model uses the enhanced knowledge base, a higher accuracy (73.2 %) and recall@10 (35.4%) are obtained. In addition, this thesis describes a methodology for knowledge base and associated</p> <p>inference model design that can be applied to other chronic diseases.</p>

Knowledge Transfer from multinational corporations’ headquarters to their subsidiaries : The methods of transferring knowledge (Explicit &amp; Tacit)

Background: Globalization, technological advancement and opportunity of capturing new markets have pushed business organizations to expand their business in the inter- national market. As a result, companies have established their subsidiaries in the host country and control their business from headquarters. Moreover, headquarters provide all the support such as training, strategies and knowledge to their subsidiary to perform better and help to build competitive advantage. The importance of knowledge transfer has increased in recent decades because knowledge is considered as an asset. Aim: The aim of the study is to analysis the method of knowledge transfer (explicit and tacit) from multinational companies headquarter to their subsidiaries. Methodology: In this paper, qualitative research approach has been followed with con- tent analysis technique. Primary data has been collected through interviews and Conve- nience sampling technique were used. Findings: Findings of the study shows that MNCs are using agency theory and knowl- edge base theory to transfer knowledge to their subsidiary. Most of the cases it has been observed that headquarters appeared as a knowledge creator whereas subsidiaries only utilize that knowledge. Moreover, manufacturing based companies transfer more explicit knowledge and service based companies transfer more tacit knowledge. Almost every MNCs use training, seminars, creating social groups and written instructions to transfer explicit and tacit knowledge to their subsidiaries. Study also found that there are some internal (hoarding behavior, non-invented here syndrome) and external factors (culture, language, location) which affect the knowledge transfer process of MNCs. Contribution of the study: This study will help managers around the world to under- stand the core concept of knowledge transfer, knowledge transfer method and factors affecting knowledge transfer. On the other hand, it will also help to design flawless channels to transfer knowledge. Scope of further studies: More interviews can be added including managers from the subsidiaries to get a more broader perspective. Also the studies can be done with com- paring different industries since knowledge is different depending on the industry. For example, the service Industry has more tacit knowledge than in the manufacturing indus- try.

Background: Child sexual abuse is a problem that manifests in all spheres of our society, a social problem that often crosses the desk of a social worker rendering services to children and families. The researcher can still remember how daunting her first experience was when she dealt with an allegation of child sexual abuse. Now, in hindsight she believes that if she had more in-depth knowledge when dealing with children who has been sexually abused and their disclosure thereof, it would have made the world of difference to her and the clients that she was rendering services to. Objectives: The primary aim of the study was to investigate the level of knowledge that the social workers of Child Welfare Tshwane currently have when dealing with a disclosure of sexual abuse during the intake interview. The findings will provide guidelines to Child Welfare Tshwane regarding the required level of knowledge of social workers during the intake interview when dealing with a sexual abuse disclosure. Method: The study was conducted through a questionnaire that was composed using information gathered during a literature study. Social workers employed by Child Welfare Tshwane completed the questionnaire in order to shed light on their knowledge base with regard to child sexual abuse and the disclosure thereof. Žiniomis grindžiami vartotojo reikalavimų modelių generavimas tapo vienas iš pagrindinių informacinių sistemų plėtojimo procesų. Reikalavimų specifikavimas atlieka svarbiausią vaidmenį kuriant programinę įrangą. Darbe aptariama žiniomis grindžiamas vartotojo poreikių modelio generavimo metodas. Aptarta žiniomis grindžiama sistemos architektūra. Reikalavimų modelio generavimui naudojama veiklos modelis, laikomas kaip žinių šaltinis, integruotas su reikalavimų specifikavimo modeliu sukurtu remiantis Volere šablono pagrindu. Šio darbo tikslas išanalizuoti esamų vartotojo reikalavimų įrankių privalumus ir trūkumus, bei pasiūlyti technologinį sprendimą vartotojo reikalavimų specifikacijos generavimui. Šio darbo objektas yra vartotojo reikalavimų specifikacija Darbo problema – vartotojo reikalavimų specifikavimas šiuo metu nėra grindžiamas formalizuotais kriterijais. Jeigu nesiremsime šia ideologija, tai neturėsime informacijos pilnumo, todėl reikia taikyti pasirinkto modelio struktūrą informacijos surinkimui iš vartotojo, bei kuo labiau formalizuoti Sukurtas programinis prototipas integruojant pakeistą veiklos modelį su Volere šablonu. Šis įrankis leidžia specifikuoti vartotojo reikalavimus priimant tai, kad veiklos modelis jau yra užpildytas konkrečios dalykinės srities žiniomis. Atlikus reikalavimų specifikavimą, sugeneruojama vartotojo reikalavimų specifikacija. / Knowledge based user requirements models generation became one of the basis information systems development proceses. The specification of requirements make the essential role developing the software. This paper analises knowledge based user models generation method. Also discuss knowledge based system architekture. The enterprise model is used for requirements model generation and is reputed as the knowledge source which is integrated with requirements specification model made in conformity with Volere template basis. The aim of this work is to analyse the advantages and disadvantages of existing user requirements specification tools and suggest the best technological method for the generation of user reguirements specification model. The object of this work is user requirements specification. The problem of the work is that user requirements specification is not based on formalized criterion, so in such a way we lose the fullness of information. That’s why we have to choose the model to have a structure for the information collecting from the user. The programme prototype was developed using Volere tempalate basis integrated with changed enterprise model. This tool allows to specify user requirements considering that enterprise model is filled with knowledge about exact object domain. Report is generated after requirements specification.

Dynamics of knowledge base complexity : an inquiry into oil producing countries' struggle to build innovation capabilities

According to conventional wisdom, the petroleum industry is classified as a ‘resource based’ and ‘mature’ industry. It is subject to the ‘resource curse’ thesis, exhausted of ‘technological opportunities’ with limited capacity for knowledge based economic growth. This study questions the adequacy of this line of reasoning. Exploring the technological complexity of the sector, a complementary argument is presented. We show that the sector has recently experienced a surge in ‘technological opportunities’. However the ‘systemic complexity of the knowledge base’ has constrained many oil producing countries’ enjoyment of these opportunities. This view highlights the role of dynamics of knowledge base complexity as an important ‘cognitive’ barrier for building innovation capabilities in endowed countries. This study is based on the extension of a ‘Sectoral Innovation Systems’ approach, highlighting the role of technological regimes in catch-up possibilities and strategies. Knowledge base complexity is explored as an under-researched element of technological regimes. The research contributes in three ways. First, it introduces a dynamic and three-dimensional view of knowledge base complexity at the conceptual level, and hypothesizes its implication for patterns of innovation and catch-up processes. Second, a quantitative methodology is developed to examine the proposed hypotheses. Third, the conceptual and methodological suggestions are empirically examined in the context of upstream petroleum industry. The findings propose that the sector has gone through phases of transformation and reconfiguration. The sector’s technological regime over the most recent period experienced high opportunities combined with rising systemic complexity of the knowledge base. We show that this trend in technological regimes is associated with shift of the sector from Schumpeter Mark I to II and with the emergence of major Integrated Service Companies as new system integrators coping with rising systemic complexity. We also observe that rising systemic complexity is associated with slow down and halt of geographical dispersion of innovation. The sector-wide cumulativeness stemming from systemic complexity creates high cognitive barriers to entry for latecomers. The very scarce examples of catch-up in a few advanced oil producing countries suggest that high innovation opportunities in complex industries are open mostly to countries with both advanced national innovation systems and accumulated production experience. For latecomer countries to benefit, their industrial policy needs to cope with increasing systemic complexity, mitigating its coordination costs and facilitating the integration of distributed catch-up processes. This highlights the key role of ‘late comer systems integrators’ for successful catch-up.
