A study of the relationship between engineering design and measurement technology

Saunders, Per January 2015 (has links)
Engineering design and dimensional measurement tend to occur at opposite ends of the product creation process. As a result, the dialogue may sometimes be poor, and can lead to the production of features that are difficult to measure, adding unnecessary cost and risk to the business. In response, the EngD research aims to identify ways in which the relationship between these activities can be strengthened. An emphasis was placed on product lifecycle management (PLM), due to the sponsor’s desire to maximise the value of their existing investments in this area. Since the problem is complex, and seemingly intractable, a mixed methods approach was adopted in which laboratory experiments were interwoven with small-scale interventions within industry. The research began with the development of a theoretical framework, labelled ‘PLM-integrated dimensional measurement’ (PiDM). The framework builds on existing literature, whilst incorporating issues identified by stakeholders. Test cases were structured and executed against the framework in order to identify technology gaps; key amongst which was the need to improve measurement planning for coordinate measuring machines by incorporating uncertainty evaluation techniques. Four interconnected investigations were then carried out in an industrial setting to explore measurement capability in practice. The findings from these investigations informed subsequent development of an uncertainty-based measurement planning system. The system brings together commercially available simulation software and measurement programming software into a PLM environment. It allows features to be categorised according to their ‘measurability’, providing quantitative data for verification planning and engineering design. The EngD concludes with an industrial case study, investigating potential routes to deployment. This case study provided the data needed to commission a further two year programme of research into the topic, formally engaging the sponsor organisation’s strategic metrology and PLM solution providers. This new research programme is structured around the PiDM framework.

Proposition d’un cadre de modélisation pour les applications PLM : application à la gestion de configurations / Proposal of a modeling framework for PLM applications : application to the configuration management

Zina, Souheil 14 November 2007 (has links)
Monitoring the technical information is one of the main preoccupations of the companies. Indeed, the increasingly constraining regulations and the higher competition level require being more rigorous and reactive to the customers’ requests. The product quality improvement and the reduction of costs and of cycles require applying rules and means of technical data management. However, the installation of a PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) solution remains a difficult exercise in order to take into account the complexity and the diversity of the customer requirements. The issues faced by both editors and integrators of PLM applications arise from the specific aspect of customers’ projects, even though most functional needs are often generic. The increasing data complexity and the need for flexible and scalable systems require PLM applications editors to capitalize knowledge related to their products engineering and to rationalize the working methods of design and development teams. This research work is interested in defining a modeling framework and deployment methods to help the integrator to specify, design, implement and make PLM applications evolve quickly by taking into account the customers’ specificities. The study carried out at LASCOM on the Advitium software package, consisted in setting a step of reverse engineering which made it possible to formalize the concepts needed for technical data management, and the specifics related to the product configuration management. This fundamental stage made possible to validate the handled concepts.

Digital Tools for Product Development and Organizational Management

HABIB, MD.AHASHAN, SULTAN LIPOL, LEFAYET January 2010 (has links)
The report illustrates about the digital tools those are used for product development and organizational management (apparel sector). We went to Lectra Sweden AB, DTS solutions AB to search our planned information about those tools. We got some additional information from them as well. We were interested to learn about much software for this but we studied about Lectra Fashion PLM, PISA PDM, and ERP Garp system (CRM, SRM, MRM) as we could manage opportunity to know about them only. For Lectra, we focused on general idea about this software, its different divisions, its working procedure, its advantage to use, its possibility to use for every company. On the other hand, we concentrated on almost similar way of Lectra for PDM, PLM, ERP (CRM, SRM, and MRM).We got different divisions of Lectra, namely- Kaledo, Modaris, Diamino, Optiplan are using for various purposes, like - design, pattern making, marker making, spreading and cutting. On the opposite side of the coin, if companies implement PDM, PLM and ERP system, they can assist to manage the whole business chain very easily for instance- product development, order, purchase, manufacturing, stock/distribution, economy, logistics etcetera. We also knew that it is expensive to buy those software’s and require special skill to operate so it is not prolific to all company. / Program: Magisterutbildning i Applied Textile Management

A Study of Internet Patients Association to Breast Cancer Patients at E hospital

Hung, Chao-Ming 06 September 2011 (has links)
Abstract Due to the advanced development of information technology, society groups generated from internet have been in shear progress. Not only can this phenomenon establish a bridge of emotional connection, it can also provide health information and medical knowledge. Moreover, it certainly can be influential on health policy conducted by governments. Among the present medical society groups, PatientsLikeMe.com (PLM) developed an innovative business model. It built up a platform which allows patients share their own medical history. Through sharing medical history, the patients are able to discover someone else who has similar symptoms and then help to improve clinical outcome. This website may collect patients¡¦ information under patients¡¦ permission. After being clearly filed and analyzed, the data may be sold to medical companies or co-operated institutions for improving clinical therapy. This model has been evaluated by an American consulting institution on business model -- ¡§Board of Innovation¡¨ --as the ¡§Top 10 shocking Business Model of 2010¡¨.Additionally, this model is recognized as a specific research model that may permanently change the methodology of medical research.(J Gospel Net December 2nd,2010) With a view to evaluating the function of websites on helping breast cancer patients to overcome depression and helplessness on diseases, in this study, we would like to introduce the concept of PLM internet society groups. After two interviews on breast cancer patients, we found that the patients are desperately looking for information while the diagnosis is firstly confirmed. These patients are thereby paying deep sympathy to the ones who are also in the same shoes. Under this condition, the patients are willing to share their experience anonymously. At the same time, they only want to solve the problems that already come to the door rather than prepare in advance. Consequently, all the information is collected from the surroundings and lack of proved quality. Therefore, it is important to avoid the fear brought by the overloaded information. From this research, we concluded that (1) during treatment, the breast cancer patients can receive professional assistance and sharing experience from PLM or similar function/ service on websites. (2)Through internet technology, it is possible to provide a platform that surpasses the limitation of both time and space and allows patients to share their personal experience and medical history. (3) PLM system opens a window that allows physicians or nurses to answer patient¡¦s question in one-to-one manner. It is also possible for patients to share their knowledge and some tips that may not be mentioned by medical professionals. However, we also notice that most patients still have problems on using internet society groups because of time limitation, incapability of typing and being unfamiliar on internet skills etc. This research concludes that internet society groups are unlikely to fulfill the requirement of breast cancer patients. Gestion du Cycle de Vie des Produits: Définitions, Problèmes Ouverts et Modèles de Référence

Terzi, Sergio 27 May 2005 (has links) (PDF)

Unlocking Product Lifecycle Management Potential: A Self-Assessment framework for maturity. : A case study on Tetra Pak, Sweden

Lande, Tejas January 2023 (has links)
In the fluctuating and competitive business world, the significance of Product Lifecycle Management is on the rise. It's becoming a pivotal strategy for organizations keen on preserving their market competitiveness. However, the practical execution of PLM often poses tangible difficulties. Even though businesses recognize the potential benefits of PLM, the challenges in its effective deployment tend to create hurdles, making the implementation process complex and formidable. This study centered on Tetra Pak applying a distinct framework and a statistical approach to assess the level of PLM maturity. Utilizing a quantitative research methodology, a survey tool that was specifically designed to be in line with this framework was adopted. The research carefully examined the PLM-related business dimensions and components, and the results ultimately revealed Tetra Pak’s overall PLM maturity levels. This method produced a thorough understanding of the company's PLM framework and uncovered potential areas that could use improvement. The findings from this study contribute to a wider comprehension of PLM's role in bolstering sustainability and competitiveness in the contemporary business landscape. The maturity framework, developed as part of this research specific to Tetra Pak, serves as a versatile instrument to steer PLM implementation. This framework assists businesses in adapting to shifting strategies, thereby helping them to maintain a competitive advantage in an ever-changing market.
