A Study of the High School Graduates of Bullitt County, Kentucky

Jeffries, Thomas S. 01 July 1955 (has links)
With the advent of the free public high school, there has been a thirty-fold increase in secondary school enrollment in the last fifty years. If we are to maintain and improve the quality of our democracy, it is essential that education have the primary purpose of meeting the needs of these students. “Consequently, the school program must be planned in terms of pupil needs and in relation to goals that are important to the students themselves. Activities and experiences must be provided which afford practice in all areas of democratic living, which are aimed at the improvement of life in the community, and which are meaningful to youths in terms of their problems, both common and individual. An educational program developed along these lines will stress factors other than academic courses and subject centered materials.” [Williams, et al.] “The dual purpose of the high school in preparing the individual for the actualities of life, on the one hand, and the preparation for college on the other is recognized.” [Hudson] In making this study of the graduates of the three high schools of Bullitt County, it would seem desirable to know something of the community. “Bullitt County, located in north central Kentucky, a few miles south of Louisville, has an area of 308 square miles. It is bounded on the north by Jefferson County, on the east by Spencer County, on the south by Nelson County, and on the west by Hardin County. The Fort Knox Military Reservation engulfs a large portion of the western section of the county. The county is strictly agricultural and residential. The proximity to Louisville offers employment opportunities to many persons. Recent statistics show that there are 1,062 farms in the county; however, a large portion of th eland cannot be classified as good farming land.” [Tincher & Anderson]

Textile Product Development focusing on Entrepreneurship and Business is a new education at the Swedish School of Textiles in Borås. The program was founded in year 2005 and has not yet had a full class recieve a bachelor degree. Statistics does not exist over how former students are coping with work in the field of fashion and textiles. After some research we discovered that many students start out their education with a dream of becoming a buyer. Since there are two other educations from Borås, Textile Economics and KY-Teko, we see that the competition could be stiff in that field. These educations are traditionally what employees at buyer offices have studied. How does a graduate from the newly founded Textile Product Development focusing on Entrepreneurship and Business stand compared to the traditionally bound Textile Economics and KY-Teko when applying for a job as a buyers assistant?Out study shows that a graduate from Textile Product Development focusing on Entrepreneurship and Business stands well against competition from the other textile educations mentioned above.

Program: Kandidat inom Magisterutbildning i fashion management med inriktning modemarknadsföring

Identifying Gifted Students in Science

Zirkelbach, Andrea Cary 01 May 2011 (has links)
Currently, there is no standard protocol to identify students who are gifted in science. If students are identified as gifted early on in elementary school, teachers and parents can foster their interest, increasing the students’ knowledge, value, and affect as well as their willingness to re-engage science (Eccles & Wigfield, 2002; Gottfried & Gottfried, 1996; Häussler 1987; Neber & Schommer-Aikins, 2002; Osborne, 2003; Schunk, Pintrich, & Meece, 2008). In this study, a brief student identification form was developed for elementary school teachers to complete. The form was based on Hidi and Renninger’s (2006) four-phase model of interest development. The form was one piece of a more comprehensive identification protocol. Students in grades second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth from six Warren County elementary schools were asked to participate in this study. However, due to insufficient data, grades two and six were not used after collection. Few sixth grade teachers completed the forms and second graders did not take the ITBS. This study primarily focused on identifying students from underrepresented populations. These six schools, Cumberland Trace, Bristow, Lost River, Oakland, Richardsville, and North Warren, were chosen based on their larger population of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Rule-based Decision Support System For Sensor Deployment In Drinking Water Networks

Prapinpongsanone, Natthaphon 01 January 2011 (has links)
Drinking water distribution systems are inherently vulnerable to malicious contaminant events with environmental health concerns such as total trihalomethanes (TTHMs), lead, and chlorine residual. In response to the needs for long-term monitoring, one of the most significant challenges currently facing the water industry is to investigate the sensor placement strategies with modern concepts of and approaches to risk management. This study develops a Rule-based Decision Support System (RBDSS) to generate sensor deployment strategies with no computational burden as we oftentimes encountered via large-scale optimization analyses. Three rules were derived to address the efficacy and efficiency characteristics and they include: 1) intensity, 2) accessibility, and 3) complexity rules. To retrieve the information of population exposure, the well-calibrated EPANET model was applied for the purpose of demonstration of vulnerability assessment. Graph theory was applied to retrieve the implication of complexity rule eliminating the need to deal with temporal variability. In case study 1, implementation potential was assessed by using a small-scale drinking water network in rural Kentucky, the United States with the sensitivity analysis. The RBDSS was also applied to two networks, a small-scale and large-scale network, in “The Battle of the Water Sensor Network” (BWSN) in order to compare its performances with the other models. In case study 2, the RBDSS has been modified by implementing four objective indexes, the expected time of detection (Z1), the expected population affected prior to detection (Z2), the expected consumption of contaminant water prior to detection, and the detection likelihood (Z4), are being used to evaluate RBDSS’s performance and compare to other models in Network 1 analysis in BWSN. Lastly, the implementation of iv weighted optimization is applied to the large water distribution analysis in case study 3, Network 2 in BWSN.

Effectiveness of Introduction to College GE-100

Johnson, Charles E. 01 December 2011 (has links)
In 2008, the excitement to teach the class, Introduction to College to new students who are beginning college, was greatly accepted with much reservation. Numerous memories reflected back to that special period when the writer was faced with those daunting decisions of where to attend college. Those memories of excitement and fear of being away from home the very first time, starting college life, meeting new friends, and what career path to choose, were difficult decisions during that transitional time. Orientation class back then consisted mainly of a half day spent touring the college campus and listening to various speakers; if you could stay awake. The scope of this study will be to assess the effectiveness of Introduction to College (GE-100), on student GPAs and “persistence-to-graduation” rates as measures of success. In the course, the student will learn about the variety of support services available at the college, the behaviors necessary to be successful in college, and issues that relate to choice of major and/or careers. This study used a quantitative approach utilizing an ex-post facto longitudinal design that measures student grade point averages (GPA) and persistence-to-graduation rates for the five- year period from the Fall Semester of 2003 through the Spring Semester of 2008. Overall, at the conclusion, the results indicated that GE-100 students had significantly higher GPAs and significantly greater persistence- to-graduation rates over a five year period when compared with student who did not take or complete (GE- 100).

Pleins étiquetages et configurations équilibrées : aspects topologiques de l'Optimisation Combinatoire

Meunier, Frédéric 15 July 2006 (has links) (PDF)

The bioarchaeology of children's health in antebellum Kentucky : the Old Frankfort Cemetery

Favret, Amy C. January 2005 (has links)
The Old Frankfort Cemetery (15Frl54) is located in downtown Frankfort, Kentucky, at the foot of Fort Hill. Records indicate this cemetery may have been the first in use in Frankfort. It was initially used as a general burial ground for the city in the early 1800s; however, it appears that the cemetery quickly became dilapidated and was primarily used for the poor of the city. Subsequent development of the site through out the 19th and 20`" centuries effectively removed the cemetery from the landscape and public memory. This amnesia was compounded by the social status of those interred at the Old Frankfort Cemetery. The specific aim of this study is to better understand children's health in the Antebellum South. Through a case study of Frankfort, Kentucky, political and economic conditions during the 19th century that affected health conditions will be examined. Documentation of immature skeletal remains from this unknown population will provide insight as to delays in both bone and dental growth and maturity, and epiphyseal closure. It will also provide information on the health of the overall population. Results of this study will not only enhance the social, economic and political intra-relationships between the population of the cemetery, but also the surrounding urban area of Frankfort, KY, during the early 19'h century and Antebellum America. / Department of Anthropology
