Application de la méthode de Vojta à des résultats de finitude sur les variétés abéliennes et semi-abéliennes

RÉMOND, Gaël 05 July 2004 (has links) (PDF)

The Lang-Trotter conjecture for Drinfeld modules

Tweedle, David January 2011 (has links)
In 1986, Gupta and Murty proved the Lang-Trotter conjecture in the case of elliptic curves having complex multiplication, conditional on the generalized Riemann hypothesis. That is, given a non-torsion point P∈E(ℚ), they showed that P (mod p) generates E(𝔽p) for infinitely many primes p, conditional on the generalized Riemann hypothesis. We demonstrate that Gupta's and Murty's result can be translated into an unconditional result in the language of Drinfeld modules. We follow the example of Hsu and Yu, who proved Artin's conjecture unconditionally in the case of sign normalized rank one Drinfeld modules. Further, we will cover all necessary background information.

Magneto-optical Effects of Magnetic Fluids

Lin, Man-chien 08 July 2001 (has links)
In this thesis, the study of optical properties of magnetic fluid thin films is the main purpose. We measured the intensity of linear polarized laser beam, which passed through our sample, magnetic fluid thin film with external magnetism, to analyze the relationships between magnetic field intensity and magneto-birefringence and magneto-dichroism. According to our experimental results, we ascertain that both the magneto-birefringence and magneto-dichroism are existed. Besides, we found that the difference of index at magnetic fluid thin film changed with magnetic field intensity also. The phenomenon let us believe that magnetic fluid thin film is anisotropy. Moreover, we also applied the statement, which agreed by most physicists to explain what we found from our real measurements.

Bifurcations of Periodic Solutions of Functional Differential Equations with Spatio-Temporal Symmetries

Collera, JUANCHO 30 April 2012 (has links)
We study bifurcations of periodic solutions with spatio-temporal symmetries of functional differential equations (FDEs). The two main results are: (1) a centre manifold reduction around a periodic solution of FDEs with spatio-temporal symmetries, and (2) symmetry-breaking bifurcations for symmetric rings of delay-coupled lasers. For the case of ODEs, symmetry-breaking bifurcations from periodic solutions has already been studied. We extend this result to the case of symmetric FDEs using a Centre Manifold Theorem for symmetric FDEs which reduces FDEs into ODEs on an integral manifold around a periodic solution. We show that the integral manifold is invariant under the spatio-temporal symmetries which guarantees that the symmetry structure of the system of FDEs is preserved by this reduction. We also consider a problem in rings of delay-coupled lasers modeled using the Lang-Kobayashi rate equations. We classify the symmetry of bifurcating branches of solutions from steady-state and Hopf bifurcations that occur in 3-laser systems. This involves finding isotropy subgroups of the symmetry group of the system, and then using the Equivariant Branching Lemma and the Equivariant Hopf Theorem. We then utilize this result to find the bifurcating branches of solutions in DDE-Biftool. Symmetry often causes eigenvalues to have multiplicity, and in some cases, this could lead DDE-Biftool to incorrectly predict the bifurcation points. We address this issue by developing a method of finding bifurcation points which can be used for the general case of n-laser systems with unidirectional and bidirectional coupling. / Thesis (Ph.D, Mathematics & Statistics) -- Queen's University, 2012-04-30 11:25:01.011

'Taste of the world' : a re-evaluation of the publication history and reception context of Andrew Lang's Fairy Book series, 1889-1910

Hines, Sara Marie January 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines Andrew Lang’s Fairy Book series (1889-1910) as a material and cultural commodity, thereby re-evaluating neglected or overlooked aspects of its significance as a printed collection of fairy tales. First, it defines the publishing context for fairy-tale collections printed in Britain prior to the publication of The Blue Fairy Book in 1889. As such, Chapter One addresses pervasive claims that Lang’s series systematically revived a waning interest in fairy tales. The chapter first offers context for Lang’s series by providing a bibliographic history of the classic fairy tales – most of which are included in The Blue Fairy Book – in English from 1691 to 1889. It then focuses specifically on the decade of the 1880s to examine types of fairy-tale collections that were available in print prior to the series’ first volume and suggests that the fairy tale as a publishing phenomenon was more prominent in the late nineteenth century than has been assumed. Chapter Two seeks to establish how the diverse literary, cultural, and intellectual course of Lang’s career made him particularly suitable to edit a collection of fairy tales. His academic interests in literature as well as his ongoing study of fairy tales influenced his editorial strategies for The Blue Fairy Book, which then provided a model for the remainder of the series. Chapter Three examines the phenomenon of the “literary series” through an exploration of paratextual elements, such as Longmans’ production, branding, and marketing strategies as well as Henry J. Ford’s book illustrations and designs. The seasonal context in which the books were published provides a further framework for situating Lang’s series within the history of publishing fairy tales in Britain. Chapter Four considers the series’ printings and sales numbers, along with themes that are present throughout the published reception of the series. While Longmans capitalizes on Lang’s name in their branding strategies, in the popular press Lang’s name became synonymous with fairy-tale narratives. Furthermore, the series’ immediate reception challenges more recent scholarly positions regarding the very significant group of translators who contributed towards the series. Finally, Chapter Five recognizes the colonial context of the period and positions interest in fairy tales within the wider nineteenth-century phenomenon of collecting objects and narratives from across the Empire. It further demonstrates how narratives of race and colonialism influenced both text and illustration in the Fairy Books. The conclusion consists of a brief overview of Fairy Book editions that have been produced from 1910 to the present. Not only did the series achieve immediate popularity during its initial publication, but it has also remained in print for over a century. Through an exploration of the series as a material, publishing phenomenon, and by attending closely to presentational devices, this thesis re-examines the cultural significance of Lang’s Fairy Books.

Sustaining competitive advantage through the resource based view in a commercial real estate broking company

Motaung, Ndibu Rachel 24 April 2015 (has links)
M.Com. (Business Management) / The commercial real estate broking industry is considered one of the most competitive industries globally, with research showing that it has many competitors and the ease of entry is rather easy. This research was conducted in the context of the commercial real estate broking industry in order to examine the extent of competition in the industry and to establish how one of the companies in this industry can sustain the competitive advantage. The study revealed that gaining and sustaining competitive advantage is about strengthening the resources that are not valuable, rare and imitable in the organisation as reflected in the model by Knott (2009: 166). The primary purpose of this study was to explore how JLL SA can obtain and sustain competitive advantage in the competitive commercial real estate broking environment through the Resource Based View. The research methodology applied in this study was a qualitative study, which consisted of 9 semi structured interviews from Jones Lang LaSalle South Africa (JLL SA). The criteria for the population sample was that the respondents had to have adequate experience in the commercial real estate broking industry and had a thorough knowledge of the company under review. The research highlighted a number of challenges regarding the market position of JLL SA and that the company does not have a formal rivalry strategy. From the research, it was found that strategic planning, particularly for competition happens as and when the organisation is challenged by competition. The study also reveals that JLL SA does not communicate a strategic direction for tackling competition. The main recommendations of this study is that JLL SA adopts the model suggested by Knott (2009:166) as a measure to gain and sustain competitive advantage. The model refers to the valuable, rarity and inimitability of resources through, in which JLL SA can selects attributes or resources to evaluate in order to sustain competitive commercial real estate broking industry is considered one of the most competitive industries globally, with research showing that it has many competitors and the ease of entry is rather easy. The sale of the farm Melkboschkuil and the start of copper mining in Namaqualand (1850 – 2000)

De La Harpe, Anthony Vernon January 2015 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / This thesis relates what is referred to in the text as a 'chronicle' of the history of the Cloete family of Springbokfontein and surrounding areas in Namaqualand, with particular attention to the issue of a land transaction in the early 1850s between seven Cloete brothers and the English copper mining company Phillips & King. The sale of the farm Melkboschkuil has since been a source of long-standing dispute on the part of the Cloete family. It traces the circumstances of the Cloetes' settlement in Namaqualand, the archival and oral record regarding the highly contentious ‘sale’ of the land between these parties, and the subsequent resonances of this land dispute over decades and indeed right up to the 1990s when the Cloete descendants lodged a land claim. The author attempts to use the very specific story of a land deal to throw light on the wider story of the relations between a disadvantaged Baster and later 'Coloured' family, and the white-dominated local and regional government in Namaqualand -- particularly in Springbok. At the same time, attention is drawn to the political and economic forces shaping the people around Springbokfontein during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The small story of the Cloetes is used to illuminate the wider history of the inequitable relations between white capitalists and Baster/Coloured landowners dispossessed of their historic rights to land. The thesis is based on a detailed examination of the struggle of the Cloete family in Namaqualand to secure possession of the land that they once owned but which became the site of a copper mine and later on the town of Springbok. The narrative told from the perspective of certain members of the Cloete family and their descendants, follows a convoluted trail of legal papers, land deeds and oral pronouncements. But at the heart of the story is the question as to how the Nama and Baster people of Namaqualand came to be divested of their rights to the land and a fair share of the mineral wealth of the district following the development of copper mining.

A metropole replicante de metropolis a Blade Runner

Suppia, Alfredo Luiz Paes de Oliveira, 1975- 28 November 2002 (has links)

Na conclusão são amarradas as proposições levantadas nos capítulos anteriores, com vistas a associar Metropolis e Blade Runner a projetos respectivamente moderno e pós-moderno de sociedades do futuro / Abstract: Metropolís, directed by Fritz Lang in 1925-6, is a foundational film which launched a new aesthtetics and became extremely influencial. Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott in 1982, quotes and re-elaborates several elements of Metropolis, becoming one of the most representative movies of the 80's. This Master's dissertation cames on a detailed analysis of both films and their inter-relations, departing from the idea that Blade Runner presents aesthetic, narrative and ideological issues already approached by Lang in 1926, but under a perspective of the 80's. This dissertation is structured around three axes: the city, the metalanguage and the allegories. Thus, in the 1st chapter of the thesis, "The Architecture of the Metropolis: Metropolis, 2026; Los Angeles, 2019", the aesthetic sources of Lang's and Scott's futuristic metropolis are analysed. In focus is the architecture, an element so relevant in both films that the city acquires the status of protagonist. The reflection on the articulation between time and space in the metropolis is followed by meditations on elements such as the gothic, the kitsch, the expressionism, the futurism, the film noir, etc. The 2nd chapter, "The Eyes of the Metropolis or The Media inside the Mediun", deals with the issue of the metalanguage, lookíng at how the media and communication technologies (photography, cinema and video) are approached by Lang and Scott. Special attention is given to the discussion on simulacra, present in both the films. The 3rd chapter, "Constructing the Legend", explains how the legends of Metropolis and Blade Runner are constructed. The aim is to identify the ideological discourse and the social critique suggested by the characters and the action of both fIlms, taking into consideration aspects such as religion, the double and racial and political speeches. The conclusion ties up the arguments raised in the previous chapters, finally associating Metropolis and Blade Runner respectively to modem and postmodern projects of future societies / Mestrado / Multimeios
