Procurou também verificar se e até que ponto os traços em variação na fala espontânea daqueles indivíduos se refletem na escrita monitorada dos mesmos. Além disso, tentou desenvolver uma reflexão sobre as implicações pedagógicas da variação lingüística. A metodologia utilizada permitiu a constituição de um corpus composto de duas amostras: a primeira resultante da gravação de cerca de dez horas de entrevistas com 14 estudantes da primeira e da quarta séries do Ensino Fundamental do primeiro ciclo de duas escolas municipais; a segunda resultou da aplicação de um teste com os mesmos estudantes em que eles deveriam escrever palavras sujeitas às variações que constituíram objeto da pesquisa. Attitudes and Motivations Towards Learning Foreign Languages: A Survey of of U.S. University Students

This study examined the beliefs and opinions of U.S university students towards learning foreign languages. Four major areas were explored, including attitudes and motivations towards learning foreign languages, perceptions of foreign languages in the U.S., and favorability of Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, and Spanish. One additional area that investigated participants' opinions in support or against a foreign language requirement in the United States was also examined. The instrument included a survey of 22 items, consisting of 13 quantitative attitude/opinion questions, two qualitative open-ended questions, and seven questions for demographics. The data was analyzed through descriptive, inferential, and content analyses, including Cronbach's Alpha, independent and dependent samples t-tests and one-way ANOVAs. The results of the study showed that participants generally had positive attitudes and high motivations towards learning foreign languages. Their perceptions were slightly critical of Americans' perspectives of foreign languages but indicated the belief that the U.S. education system does provide reasonable opportunities to learn foreign languages. Participants showed high favorability towards learning Spanish, with French also slightly favorable. Participants did not demonstrate positive favorability towards learning Arabic, Chinese, German, or Korean. However, participants commonly referred to Chinese as being particularly useful for business opportunities and consistently indicated low interest or usefulness in Arabic. Few significant differences were observed between genders or foreign language education background. Overall, female participants had slightly more positive views about learning foreign languages, whereas the same was true for participants with higher-level foreign language ability.

Análise de um corpus de produção escrita em português por crianças e adultos indígenas bilíngues/monolíngues de Dourados/MS a partir da linguistíca de corpus

Com a finalidade de entender a origem das dificuldades apresentadas por crianças e adultos indígenas na produção de textos em português, surgiu a presente investigação. a partir da Linguística de Corpus. Para tanto, foi construído um corpus de 483 textos de crianças e 349 textos de adultos escritos em língua portuguesaproduzidos por crianças e adultos indígenas e não indígenas. A amostra do grupo das crianças contou um total de 175 crianças, sendo 111 indígenas (71 bilíngues Guarani/Kaiowá e 40 Terena monolíngues) e 64 não indígenas, falantes monolíngues de português, alunos do 4º e do 5º ano do Ensino Fundamental. O grupo de adultos foi formado por um total de 118 adultos, sendo 74 indígenas (36 bilíngues Guarani/Kaiowá e 38 Terena monolíngues) e 44 não indígenas, falantes monolíngues de português, do1o e do último ano do Ensino Superior. Os objetivos específicos da pesquisa foram: (a) verificar se existem diferenças entre o tipo de dificuldades reveladas pelos indígenas monolíngues e bilíngues de diferentes etnias – Kaiowá/Guarani e Terena – em comparação com os monolíngues não indígenas na produção de textos narrativos em português; (b) na comparação entre os dois grupos etários, crianças e adultos, observar em que medida o caminho percorrido do ensino básico à formação acadêmica interferiu no desenvolvimento da habilidade de escrita de textos; e (c) no caso dos grupos de participantes adultos, investigar se o tempo de permanência no curso de graduação (alunos que estão no primeiro e no quarto ano de curso) interfere no nível de dificuldade na produção de textos. Os dados foram analisados através da ferramenta AntConc, a partir do viés teórico da Linguística de Corpus. A partir dessa proposta de pesquisa espera-se contribuir para que os professores, tanto os que atendem os acadêmicos quanto os que atendem as crianças, compreendam como a escrita desses dois grupos indígenas se estrutura. Essas informações são essenciais para futuras orientações nos trabalhos de leitura e escritas propostos pela escola e pelos cursos universitários que recebem acadêmicos indígenas. / In order to underste the origin of the difficulties faced by indigenous children e adults in the production of texts in Portuguese, this research emerged, from Corpus Linguistics. From this research proposal is expected to contribute to teachers, both those who meet the academic e the attending children, underste how the writing of these two indigenous groups structure.This information is essential for future guidance in reading e written work proposed by schools e university courses receiving indigenous academics.

Language Orientation and Student Success in Online Learning Environments: A Case Study

abstract: With the increase of academic courses moving to online instruction (Blake, 2011), it is only natural language education also would make the leap to online platforms. Following Vygotsky's (1978) Sociocultural Theory (SCT), the purpose of this study is to test the differential effect of the presence of a language learning orientation module in online environments as well as exploring the possible variables affecting student success in module and non-module containing courses. The effectiveness of the module is measured by triangulating student success as defined and tested by Kerr et al. (2006) using their quantitative TOOLS (Test of Online Learning Success) instrument and collecting qualitative data in the form of journal entries and surveys. Data were collected from 1st year university Spanish courses from both a control group (no module use), as well as an experimental group (module use). Case study data from both control and experimental groups showed trends related to student success and may help to shed light on the pedagogical implications of language orientation modules in both online and face-to-face language learning environments while providing avenues for future research designs to explore the effectiveness of the aforementioned modules in online environments. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Spanish 2016
