Simulation And Performance Evaluation Of A Fast And High Power Pulsed Laser Diode Driver For Laser Range Finder

Altinok, Yahya Kemal 01 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Laser Diodes (LDs) are semiconductor coherent lightening devices which are widely used in many fields such as defence, industry, medical and optical communications. They have advantageous characteristics such as having higher electrical-to-optical and optical-to-optical conversion efficiencies from pump source to useful output power when compared to flash lamps, which makes them the best devices to be used in range finding applications. Optical output power of lasers depends on current through LDs. Therefore, there is a relationship between operating life and work performance of LDs and performance of drive power supply. Even, weak drive current, small fluctuations of drive current can result in much greater fluctuations of optical output power and device parameters which will reduce reliability of LDs. In this thesis, a hardware for a fast and high power pulsed LD driver is designed for laser range finder and is based on linear current source topology. The driver is capable of providing pulses up to 120A with 250&mu / s pulse width and frequencies ranging from 20Hz to 40Hz. It provides current pulses for two LD arrays controlled with a proportional-integral (PI) controller and protect LDs against overcurrents and overvoltages. The proposed current control in the thesis reduces current regulation to less than 1% and diminishes overshoots and undershoots to a value less than 1% of steady-state value, which improves safe operation of LDs. Moreover, protection functions proposed in the thesis are able to detect any failure in driver and interrupt LD firing immediately, which guarantees safe operation of LDs.

Analysis and implementation of algorithms for embedded self-mixing displacement sensors design / Analyse et implémentation d'algorithmes pour la conception de capteurs de déplacement embarqués, utilisant la rétro-injection optique

Luna Arriaga, Antonio 03 July 2014 (has links)
The interaction between an emitted laser beam and a small portion of backscattered light from a pointed target that re-enters the laser's cavity, is at the origin of optical feedback phenomenon or self-mixing. Exploiting these unconventional interferometric fringes for non-contact sensors is attractive due to its minimal optical part-count and self-aligned nature. In this thesis we approach its development as a cost-eective embedded implementation for displacement measurement. To this end we explored signal processing methods for fringe detection and target's movement reconstruction, avoiding the usage of external components. We first identified some incompatibilities in prior algorithms from our research center, and then proposed further solutions. Based on interpolation theory, a simplified but proved real-time algorithm resulted for displacement reconstruction. Relying on analytical signal elaboration, an improved approach for phase calculation allowed us to provide a fringe detection algorithm robust to amplitude variations, disregarding the feedback regime and thus, allowing a seemly usage over an increased variety of applications.

A sensor for combustion thermometry based on blue diode lasers

Burns, Iain Stewart January 2006 (has links)
Spatially-resolved measurements of flame temperature have been demonstrated with diode lasers for the first time. The technique is based on the use of blue diode lasers to perform laser-induced fluorescence on indium atoms seeded to the flame. Temperature measurements have been carried out in laminar flames both by the two-line atomic fluorescence technique, and also by a novel line-shape thermometry method that requires the use of only a single diode laser. The first part of this work involved the development of blue extended cavity diode lasers with favourable tuning properties. Two custom-designed extended cavity diode lasers (ECDL) have been built, emitting at wavelengths of around 410 nm and 451 nm respectively. These devices are capable of mode-hop free tuning over ranges greater than 90 GHz. The performance of these devices exceeds that of commercially available systems and a patent application has been filed. High resolution fluorescence spectroscopy has been performed on both the 52P1/2→62S1/2 and 52P3/2→62S1/2 transitions of indium atoms seeded at trace quantities into atmospheric pressure flames. In both cases, the spectra obtained show excellent agreement with a theoretical fit based on the individual hyperfine components of the transition. The two ECDLs have been used to build a sensor for the measurement of temperature in combustion systems. It is much simpler, more compact, less expensive, and more versatile than any previously existing device. The two lasers were used sequentially to probe indium atoms seeded to the flame. The ratio of the resulting fluorescence signals is related to the relative populations in the two sub-levels of the spin-orbit split ground state of indium, and thus to the temperature. Temperature measurements have been successfully performed in a laminar flame and the data thus obtained do not need to be corrected by any ‘calibration constant’. This novel thermometry technique offers a robust alternative to traditional methods involving bulky high power lasers. A further development has been made by demonstrating a fluorescence line-shape thermometry technique requiring only a single diode laser excitation source. Progress has been made towards the goal of rapid temperature measurements appropriate to the study of turbulent flames. This involved the development of a simple technique for actively locking the wavelength of the blue diode laser to a resonance line of the tellurium molecule. A high-speed thermometry system would work by rapidly switching between the two locked laser beams using an optical modulator.

Spray Cooling For Land, Sea, Air And Space Based Applications, A Fluid Managment System For Multiple Nozzle Spray Cooling And A Guide To High Heat Flux Heater Design

Glassman, Brian 01 January 2005 (has links)
This thesis is divided into four distinct chapters all linked by the topic of spray cooling. Chapter one gives a detailed categorization of future and current spray cooling applications, and reviews the major advantages and disadvantages that spray cooling has over other high heat flux cooling techniques. Chapter two outlines the developmental goals of spray cooling, which are to increase the output of a current system and to enable new technologies to be technically feasible. Furthermore, this chapter outlines in detail the impact that land, air, sea, and space environments have on the cooling system and what technologies could be enabled in each environment with the aid of spray cooling. In particular, the heat exchanger, condenser and radiator are analyzed in their corresponding environments. Chapter three presents an experimental investigation of a fluid management system for a large area multiple nozzle spray cooler. A fluid management or suction system was used to control the liquid film layer thickness needed for effective heat transfer. An array of sixteen pressure atomized spray nozzles along with an imbedded fluid suction system was constructed. Two surfaces were spray tested one being a clear grooved Plexiglas plate used for visualization and the other being a bottom heated grooved 4.5 x 4.5 cm2 copper plate used to determine the heat flux. The suction system utilized an array of thin copper tubes to extract excess liquid from the cooled surface. Pure water was ejected from two spray nozzle configurations at flow rates of 0.7 L/min to 1 L/min per nozzle. It was found that the fluid management system provided fluid removal efficiencies of 98% with a 4-nozzle array, and 90% with the full 16-nozzle array for the downward spraying orientation. The corresponding heat fluxes for the 16 nozzle configuration were found with and without the aid of the fluid management system. It was found that the fluid management system increased heat fluxes on the average of 30 W/cm2 at similar values of superheat. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of this array at removing heat at full levels of suction is approximately 50% & 40% of a single nozzle at respective 10[degrees]C & 15[degrees]C values of superheat. The heat transfer data more closely resembled convective pooling boiling. Thus, it was concluded that the poor heat transfer was due to flooding occurring which made the heat transfer mechanism mainly forced convective boiling and not spray cooling. Finally, Chapter four gives a detailed guide for the design and construction of a high heat flux heater for experimental uses where accurate measurements of surface temperatures and heat fluxes are extremely important. The heater designs presented allow for different testing applications; however, an emphasis is placed on heaters designed for use with spray cooling.

Évaluation morphologique de la rétine par histologie et tomographie par cohérence optique (OCT) suite à rétinopexie transsclérale chez le lapin

Vanore, Maria 11 1900 (has links)
Trans-scleral retinopexy is a non-invasive laser technique, aiming at anchoring the retina to the choroid, by producing multiple photocoagulation lesions corresponding to focal burns, named atrophic coagulating scars. This technique is used in humans, especially in children, to prevent retinal detachment. Despite the laser procedure, a re-detachment of the neuroretina is still possible. This technique is used mostly in dogs, but its application could be extended to other species, if a follow-up of the lesions could be carried out over time to ensure the conformity of the chorioretinal scars. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), thanks to its very high-resolution power, in the order of microns, could be an effective tool to evaluate photocoagulation lesions in vivo. For this purpose, a correlation between sagittal sections of photocoagulation lesions by histology and OCT was performed, using the rabbit as an animal model. Our study illustrated a comparison between histology and OCT photocoagulation images at days (D) 1, 7, 21 and 42 after laser treatment. The gradual decrease in neuroretinal thickness, with an atrophic appearance, was present as early as D7, and visible in both histology and OCT. The histological hyperpigmentation clearly corresponded to the hyper-brilliance of the OCT images at D42. The OCT appears to be a precise and effective tool for the follow-up over time of a chorioretinal scar, performed with an 810 nm diode laser.

Study of Passive Optical Network (PON) System and Devices

Guo, Qingyi 04 1900 (has links)

The fiber-to-the-x (FTTX) has been widely investigated as a leading access technology to meet the ever growing demand for bandwidth in the last mile. The passive optical network (PON) provides a cost-effective and durable solution. In this thesis, we investigate different aspects of the PON, in the search for cost-effective and high-performance designs of link system and devices.

In Chapter 2, we propose a novel upstream link scheme for optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OOFDM)-PON. The colorless laser diodes are used at the optical network units (ONUs), and the overlapped channel spectrum of orthogonal subcarrier multiplexing provides high spectral efficiency. At the optical line terminal (OLT), optical switch and all optical fast Fourier transform (OFFT) are adopted for high speed demultiplexing. The deterioration caused by the laser perturbation is also investigated.

In Chapter 3, we design a novel polarization beam splitter (PBS), which is one of the most important components in polarization-controlled optical systems, e.g. the next-generation PON utilizing polarization multiplexing. Our PBS is built on a slab waveguide platform where the light is vertically confined. Planar lenses are formed to collimate and refocus light beam by converting the phase front of the beam. A planar subwavelength grating of a wedge shape induces the form birefringence, where the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) waves have different effective refractive indices, and are steered to distinct directions. This design provides low insertion loss (< 0.9 dB) and low crosstalk (< -30 dB) for a bandwidth of 100 nm in a compact size, and can be realized by different material systems for easy fabrication and/or monolithic integration with other optical components.

In Chapter 4, we study the mode partition noise (MPN) characteristics of the Fabry-Perot (FP) laser diode using the time-domain simulation of noise-driven multi-mode laser rate equation. FP laser is cheaper than the widely used distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode in PON, but its MPN is the major limiting factor in an optical transmission system. We calculate the probability density functions for each longitudinal mode. We also investigate the k-factor, which is a simple yet important measure of MPN. The sources of the k-factor are studied with simulation, including the intrinsic source of the laser Langevin noise, and the extrinsic source of the bit pattern.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
