Biopsychosocial Considerations of Pediatric Asthma Morbidity in Latino Families

Mendoza-Burcham, Marissa 2012 August 1900 (has links)
As the most prevalent chronic health condition in children under the age of 18, asthma is a disease for which significant health disparities exist. Current literature has established that ethnic minorities, families living in poverty, and families living in urban environments are at higher risk for worse morbidity. In recent years, studies focusing distinctly on Latino families, with emphasis on Puerto Rican families, have emerged. As a singular group, Puerto Rican children have demonstrated the worst outcomes and a significantly greater use of emergency room (ER) services, often related to poor adherence to adequate asthma care regimens. Guided by the biopsychosocial approach, this study sought to examine cultural and family variables and their relationship to pediatric asthma morbidity. Data from a sample of 639 children and their families from the Rhode Island region and Puerto Rico participated in this study. The data derived from the Rhode Island/Puerto Rico Asthma Center (RIPRAC) study and collected between 2002 and 2007. Bivariate analyses investigated correlations among familism and morbidity variables. Group comparisons were conducted between mainland Puerto Ricans living in the Rhode Island region and island Puerto Ricans and between Latino and non-Latino White families living in mainland United States. Confirmatory factor analysis using Mplus software evaluated a measurement model of familism and morbidity, followed by invariance testing in multiple group analyses by asthma severity and ethnicity. Lastly, structural equation modeling investigated a predictive relationship between the latent variables of familism and morbidity and meditational relationships through balanced integration. A secondary analysis for families who endorsed alternate child caregivers investigated a meditational relationship between familism and morbidity through involvement in asthma management by alternate caregivers. Significant correlations and group differences on mediator variables and observed familism variables and morbidity variables were found. Although a significant relationship between familism and morbidity was not found, significant relationships between familism and balanced integration and between balanced integration and morbidity were identified. This study contributes to emerging research on family variables as potential protective factors in pediatric asthma by focusing on familism as a primary concept amongst biological and psychosocial variables.

Life Exposures to Traumatic Events and Chronic Strains Among Older Mexican-Origin Individuals

Garcia, Marc 2011 August 1900 (has links)
The United States Latino population has experienced unprecedented growth in the past several decades. Despite these growing numbers there has been relatively little research that explores how exposure to negative life events and chronic strains affects the physical health outcomes of Latinos. This thesis examines the extent to which traumatic life events and chronic strains affect the physical health outcomes of foreign-born and native-born Mexican-origin individuals (age 45 an older) residing along the U.S./Mexico border. Results from the multivariate analysis show that there is no direct association between traumatic life events and self-reported health. However, chronic strains were found to negatively impact the well-being of both foreign-born and native-born groups. Finally, the hypothesis suggesting that foreign-born respondents would fare better in terms of health (Latino/Hispanic paradox) compared to their native-born counterparts is not supported, with the results shown to be consistently in the opposite direction. Future research is needed on the interplay between different types of stressors and physical health outcomes among Mexican-origin individuals.

Caregiver Burden and Depressive Symptoms in Hispanic Caregivers of Alzheimer's Disease Patients

Salinas, Maureen R 01 January 2016 (has links)
Caregiving for a close family member with Alzheimer’s disease is a stressful situation to be in, that often leads to high levels of caregiver burden and subsequent stress and depressive symptoms, and while there are numerous community and government resources available to caregivers, there are aspects of Hispanic cultures that may lead Hispanic caregivers to have higher levels of caregiver burden and depressive symptoms than White caregivers. 80 Hispanic caregivers and 80 White caregivers, with 40 males and 40 females within each group, will be recruited to participate in this study. Scales will be administered to both Hispanic and White caregivers in order to assess levels of caregiver burden, depressive symptoms, familism values, gender role beliefs, acculturation levels, and knowledge, comfort, and use of community resources. Hispanic caregivers will have higher levels of caregiver burden and depressive symptom scores than White caregivers, while women will have higher scores overall than men overall. Hispanic caregivers will have less knowledge, comfort, and use of community resources than White caregivers, while gender role views, familism values, and acculturation levels will be mediating factors of these relationships. Cultural differences in caregiver burden need to be assessed further, so that clinical and practical implications for community and government resources can be discussed.

This work of research‘s scope is to problematize the relations involved in the projects of infrastructure and in the strategic territorial planning that configure the Initiative for Integration of Regional Infrastructure in South America (IIRSA). It aims to comprehend the character of new factors in the territorialization and regional integration of the space of South America. For such means, we start from a contextualization of the contemporary international system, oriented by the suggestion of a spatial approach of capitalism and the phenomenon of globalization. Through this, it is analyzed the proposition of physical integration of the territories of south american‘s nations, its actors and interests, especially those one‘s involving Brasil and the so called 'run to the Pacific‘. In addition, aiming to exemplify the considerations about this last theme, it is made a specific study on the Southern Interoceanic Highway, key project of the priority agenda of IIRSA, recently concluded

Latino Perspectives on Parental Involvement in Elementary Schools

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to provide insight into immigrant Latino parents' perspectives on parental involvement in elementary school settings as influenced by the Title I Family Literacy Program (TFLP). A comparison is made of Latino parents who have been participating in the TFLP for more than one year, participants new to the program and Latino parents who chose not to participate in the TFLP. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected via a survey and individual interviews of randomly selected members of each comparison group. All research participants were immigrant Latino parents with children at one of ten Title I elementary schools operating a TFLP. The schools are part of a large, urban school district in the Southwest. Findings indicate the TFLP has a positive effect on parental involvement practices of immigrant Latino parents. Participating parents showed increased confidence in their ability to support their children's education and program participants are more engaged in school activities. The results of this study imply participation in the program for one year or more has the most impact on families. Parents who participated for more than one year communicated a high sense of responsibility toward their influence on their child's education and upbringing and an understanding of strategies needed to effectively support their children. This research also identifies barriers parents face to participation in the TFLP and parental involvement in general. Implementation of family literacy programs in other districts would need to follow guidelines similar to this TFLP to achieve comparable results. More research is needed on the effects of this program on parents, children, and school staff. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ed.D. Educational Administration and Supervision 2012

Hibridismo latino-americano : sujeito articulador

Machado, Maria Luiza Bonorino January 2006 (has links)
