The Paternal Dilemma: Fathers, Sons and Inheritance in Shakespearean Drama

Thesis advisor: Andrew Sofer / In this thesis, it is my task to explore Shakespeare’s social analysis concerning the patriarchal structure of the family and the economic implications of this system. Four plays in particular, King Lear, Henry IV, As You Like It, and The Tempest resonate with these thematic elements. At the heart of these plays is the issue I call the paternal dilemma; the father or patriarch is a mere human, cannot live forever, and therefore needs to rely on an inheritance scheme to ensure the continuation of his line. This problem sees the institution of inheritance (namely, primogeniture) as a solution or antidote to mortality. In an investigation of these issues, I place myself in an already rich field of secondary criticism, examining how genre and family structure combine in what is ultimately a conservative understanding of the Elizabethan family. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2010. / Submitted to: Boston College. Thesis advisor: Caroline Bicks / Routinely recognized as deeply patriarchal, early modern England is an era in which men and characteristics of the male gender are assumed to have held unrelenting sway over their female counterparts. This description is largely justifiable, particularly given the era's legal codes. However, this thesis seeks to enrich discussions on early modern England by examining its male-female relationships through a markedly different lens. By highlighting the close relationships that existed alongside patriarchal mandates in the era - husband and wife, father and daughter, mother and son - a fuller portrait of the period is sketched. Through an examination of how a variety of genres - medical, religious, and dramatic - grappled with moments of union between the two sexes, particularly physical union and its concurrent or resultant emotional bonds, this thesis offers greater insight into how walls to male-female connection were both raised and bridged in the time period. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2008. / Submitted to: Boston College. Anodorhynchus leari é uma ave endêmica do Bioma Caatinga e um dos psitacídeos mais ameaçados de extinção na região neotropical. Ela se reproduz apenas em formações rochosas de arenito-calcário, localizadas em dois sítios protegidos no norte do estado da Bahia; a Estação Biológica de Canudos (Toca Velha) e a Estação Ecológica do Raso da Catarina (Serra Branca). Este estudo teve por objetivo agregar informações sobre a história natural da arara-azul-de-lear, com ênfase em suas atividades reprodutivas. No Capítulo 1 descreve-se a estrutura e a disposição das cavidades encontradas nos paredões da Estação Biológica de Canudos, as quais foram acessadas internamente por meio do método de rapel. Verificou-se que os ninhos das araras estão em túneis ou salões/galerias amplos e profundos, locais formados naturalmente por ações de intempéries nas formações rochosas de 53m de altura vertical em média. Definitivamente as cavidades com ninhos não são confeccionadas ou alteradas pelas araras, para fins reprodutivos. Na área estudada existem muitas cavidades com as mesmas condições ambientais internas. No mesmo sítio, entre os anos de 2008 e 2011, foram localizadas 38 cavidades ativas. No Capítulo 2 buscou-se descrever detalhadamente a biologia reprodutiva da arara-azul-de-lear, monitorando-se internamente 18 destas cavidades. Ao final da quarta temporada reprodutiva 42 ninhadas foram estudadas. O período reprodutivo ocorreu entre os meses de dezembro e julho e a maior parte das ninhadas possuía três ovos. Por meio de ovoscopia verificou-se uma média de dois ovos embrionados por ninhada. Em quatro anos, 68 ninhegos eclodiram e destes, 83% sobreviveram até o primeiro vôo. Apesar de ser possível gerar e criar três filhotes por ninhada, em média apenas um filhote foi criado. O sucesso reprodutivo nos quatro anos amostrados foi de 71%, conforme o Protocolo de Mayfield e considerando-se 14 semanas como tempo médio de desenvolvimento dos ninhegos. Apesar de ocorrerem em casos isolados e serem pouco significativas, as causas da não ocupação de ninhos ou mortalidade no desenvolvimento estiveram relacionadas à presença de abelhas Apis sp. dentro das cavidades, perturbação causada por competição intra-específica associada à assincronia de eclosão, e à queda de ninhegos dos ninhos. No capítulo 3 infere-se sobre o recrutamento nos dois sítios reprodutivos conhecidos, Toca Velha e Serra Branca, com base em avistamentos de 118 ninhegos na entrada dos ninhos. Foram identificadas 114 cavidades potencialmente reprodutivas entre os anos de 2009 e 2010. A maioria dos ninhegos foi avistada no mês de abril nas duas temporadas reprodutivas. Sugere-se que um máximo de 228 indivíduos esteja em atividade reprodutiva, o que representa 20,17% da população de araras estimada em 2010. Conclui-se que a espécie deva ser categorizada como \"em perigo de extinção - EN\", segundo a aplicação dos critérios da IUCN. A ameaça mais importante para a espécie reside na falta de proteção nas áreas de alimentação. É fundamental ainda a continuidade de ações educativas e da rigorosa proteção dos sítios reprodutivos já conhecidos, além de esforços para buscar novas áreas potenciais para a reprodução, e que podem justificar o aumento populacional observado ao longo dos anos. Os dados obtidos possibilitam criar estratégias de manejo para incrementar a taxa reprodutiva, e também contribuir para a proteção dos sítios de nidificação da arara-azul-de-lear. / Anodorhynchus leari is endemic to the Caatinga and one of the most endangered psitacidae in the Neotropics. It reproduces only in sandstone/limestone formations, located in two protected sites in the northern region of the state of Bahia, the Biological Station of Canudos (Toca Velha) and the Ecological Station of Raso da Catarina (Serra Branca). This study aimed to gather information about the natural history of Lear\'s, with emphasis on their reproductive activities. In Chapter 1 it is described the structure and arrangement of cavities found in the walls of the Canudos Biological Station (Toca Velha), which were accessed internally by the method of rappelling. It was found that the nests of the macaws are in tunnels or rooms/galleries large and deep, naturally formed by local actions of weathering rock formations in the vertical height of 53 m on average. Definitely the nest cavities are not made or altered by macaws, for reproductive purposes. In the study area there are many holes with the same environmental conditions inside. In the same place, between the years 2008 and 2011, 38 active cavities were located. In Chapter 2 we sought to describe in detail the reproductive biology of Lear\'s Macaw, by monitoring these 18 internal cavities. At the end of the fourth breeding season 42 were studied. The reproductive period occurred between the months of July and December and most nests had three eggs. An average of two fertilized eggs per clutch. In four years, 68 nestlings hatched and of these, 83% survived until the first flight. Although it is possible to generate and create three chicks per nest on average only one chick was raised. The reproductive success in the four sampled years was 71%, following the Mayfield Protocol and considering 14 weeks as the average time of nestlings\' development. Although isolated, not significant cases occurred, the causes of non-occupation of nests in the development or mortality were related to the presence of bees, Apis into the cavities, a disruption caused by intraspecific competition associated with hatching asynchrony, and the fall of nestlings from the nest. In chapter 3 we infer about the recruitment in the two known breeding sites, Toca Velha and Serra Branca, based on sightings of nestlings in the nest entrance. We identified 114 potentially reproductive cavities between the years 2009 and 2010. Most nestlings were sighted in the month of April in the two reproductive seasons. It is suggested that a maximum of 228 individuals are in reproductive activity, which represents 20.17% of the estimated population of macaws in 2010. It is concluded that this species should be categorized as \"endangered - EN,\" according to the application of the IUCN criteria. The most important threat to the species is the lack of protection in the feeding areas. It is also essential the continuity of educational activities and rigorous protection of known breeding sites, and efforts to seek new potential areas for reproduction, which may justify the observed increase in population over the years. The data obtained allow creating management strategies to increase the reproductive rate, and also contribute to the protection of nesting sites of Lear\'s Macaw.

Subjects of Advice: Drama and Counsel from More to Shakespeare

The dissertation focuses on the relationship between political thinking and dramatic expression in the early modern period, especially in England. I approach this topic by considering what political historians have termed "the problem of counsel"--a vexed issue situated at the very center of Renaissance moral and political philosophy and informing in multiple ways the relationship between sovereign power and its subjects. Because of drama's central concern with the transformation of speech into action as well as its focus on the moral making of the individual, dramatists found in counsel a powerful instrument with which to develop specific kinds of dramatic character, create tension within individual scenes, and provide motivation for dramatic plots. Counsel also proved a convenient, familiar space within which to think through different, often controversial, political ideas and to give them reality and shape in the embodied representations of the stage. By analyzing and contextualizing plays ranging chronologically from Tudor interludes, such as those by Henry Medwall or John Redford, to Jacobean tragedies, notably Shakespeare's King Lear, the dissertation shows how significant counsel was as a shaping force in the construction of different kinds of plays in the period. It also demonstrates how this varied dramatic material itself contributed to the early modern understanding of the theory and practice of counsel.

Four facets of the relation of tragedy to dialectic and the theme of crisis of expectations

As a whole, this work serves to illuminate the tragic as a fundamental human phenomenon and an objective fact that is distinct not only from comedy and irony but from other forms of calamity and modes of failure. I consider three distinct sources of philosophical knowledge on tragedy. The first is tragic drama and literature, the second is the theory of the tragic and the third source consists of the employment of the concept of tragedy to discuss events or characters that one encounters in life. I carefully draw upon the first two sources to thicken the elaborations of four different facets of the third. In this process, I extrapolate Szondi’s notion that tragedy is a specific dialectic in a specific space. In the course of this work, I place a greater emphasis upon this general concept of the tragic as opposed to a poetics of tragedy. The dissertation bears out, however, that it is ultimately poetics - and not the dialectic as general concept - that provide us with the richer insights into tragedy as it unravels in life. The specific dialectic of tragedy unravels so as to cause the irreplaceable loss of something of great value. This provides me with a structuring element that ties the four central chapters together. In terms of content, I emphasize also upon the tragic flaw as a set of character traits (manifested by an individual or some form of collective) which keep tragedy in place. The consideration of the figure of Willy Loman allows me to examine the tragedy of failure of expectations which is a distinct category of the tragic and yet it oscillates such that ties together the other themes. A central idea that emerges from an analysis of the overlapping themes is that prior to tragedy is the investment of the deepest inner resources into a process. This investment gives rise to identity and to expectations. As a tragedy unfolds, the source of the identity or of expectation becomes also the birth place or the generator of all threats to this identity and the collapse of long nurtured expectations.

"This Rough Magic:" Imagination, Resurrection, and the Dream World Crisis in Shakespearean Tragedy

In this thesis, I explored the relationship between Shakespearean tragedy and romance, specifically how each genre treated themes regarding resurrection and the imagination. In romance, I discovered that the imagination became a portal to reality--a way through which characters understood and accepted impermanence, decay, and death. I used romance to illuminate tragedy's failures, showing that in both King Lear and Othello the imagination acts as a mask against the real. I called these imaginative spaces “dream worlds”--fantastical plains in which characters chased their impossible longings for eternity and perfected romantic love. This refusal to engage with the real, I concluded, makes resurrection impossible in tragedy. I was also deeply influenced by the criticism of Harold Goddard, who tends to read Shakespearean tragedy as romance and finds resurrection in both King Lear and Othello. I engaged with his criticism by creating the dream worlds to prove that the imagination can only act as a shield against reality in tragedy.
