Survey of South African expatriate teacher attitudes towards inclusive education in private and international schools in Oman

Mobara, Soraya 02 1900 (has links)
Inclusive education is an international philosophy that places emphasis on the provision of special education services to students with special learning needs within regular classrooms. Teachers, regardless of where in the world they are, require positive attitudes to engage in discussions, adapt curricula, develop strategies and acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for the implementation of inclusionary practices. The aim and rationale for this study was to explore the attitudes of South Africans as expatriates in a foreign country (Oman) at schools where inclusion was recently implemented but where little research was conducted in the area. In addition, the purpose was also to gain more knowledge about the elements that may influence teacher attitudes towards inclusion. A quantitative approach was employed and an online questionnaire was used to obtain data. The small sample (N=35) limited findings to descriptive statistics only. The study revealed that most teachers held positive attitudes towards the fundamental principles of inclusive education but teachers held negative attitudes towards the practical implementation of inclusion within classrooms. Teachers who received training were more positive to supporting inclusion. Male teachers expressed greater negativity than female teachers towards inclusionary practices in schools but then male teachers were more supportive and willing to undertake training, engage in teacher support and work collaboratively. Teachers teaching older groups of students appear to be less knowledgeable and less prepared or equipped to deal with inclusion. Teachers with less teaching experience held more positive attitudes towards inclusive education. Recommendations were made to provide suggestions of ways to eliminate and discourage negative attitudes and research based recommendations for future research were listed. / Inclusive Education / M. Lectura Estratègica dels Problemes Matemàtics a l'Educació Primària

Balaguer Fàbregas, Carme 08 July 2009 (has links)
The thesis aims to demonstrate the validity of a program of teaching and learning mathematics in primary education, based on strengthening the reading of mathematical problems. The theoretical foundation of this program is the Constructivist Conception of Teaching and Learning and the methodology used in implementing the program is learning strategies, applied according to methodological sequence, proposed by Monereo. Another important factor has been that contents of learning activities are highly contextualised to the real life of the group to which the program has been implemented. The results obtained have confirmed the improvement in student performance both in conceptual and procedural contents, but especially on attitudinal contents due to increased motivation for the task. Psycho-educational principles in underpinning the intervention model are: Prevention of failure, attention to diversity, promotion of critical thinking, motivation, globalization and contextualization and strategic teaching

Oorsake van leermislukking in die junior primêre fase van skole in die Windhoek stadsgebied / Causes of learning failure in the junior primary school phase in the Windhoek municipal area

Cloete Hendrika 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to establish the extrinsic and intrinsic causes of learning failure with specific reference to schools in the Windhoek municipal area and to make recommendations to counteract learning failure. Learning failure and grade failing are disconcertingly high in schools in the Windhoek municipal area. After the Ministry of Education implemented the semi-automatic promotion system, grade failing decreased, but learning failure increased because learners are promoted without achieving success in a prior grade. According to the literature study, the causes of learning failure are to be found in the home, the school, the environment, and the learner. Similarities regarding the causes of learning failure were found in the empirical investigation and the literature study. To counteract these causes • teachers should be better trained • parents should become more aware of their role in the learning success of their children • more school buildings and teachers are needed to limit class sizes. / Educational Studies / M. Empowerment of parents in early intervention of developmental challenges of pre-school children in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

Ferreira, Nathan 12 1900 (has links)
Through document analysis, one-on-one interviews with parents, and observations the researcher aimed to explore early intervention in pre-school children with learning difficulties in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape. The researcher set out to determine whether parents were aware of the importance of early intervention in addressing learning difficulties in their children, what support existed to help parents give support to children with learning difficulties, and how support could be improved to enable parents to help their children. This study found that parents in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape needed support that would enable them to provide early intervention for their children with learning difficulties. The study also showed that parents were aware of the importance of early intervention to help their children with learning difficulties. Most parents were receiving support, but there was room for improvement in the support that they were receiving. Flowing from this, the study also found that parents needed different forms of support, e.g. emotional and financial support. Based on the findings, recommendations were made. Recommendations were aimed at improving support for parents, so they can provide successful early intervention for their pre-school children, e. g. through the creation of open channels of communication between parents and other role players, like government departments and service providers. Recommendations were also made for future research, e. g. research into ways to create open channels of communication. / Inclusive Education / M. Ed. (Inclusive Education)

No. of bitstreams: 1 5388.pdf: 1714135 bytes, checksum: 2e73423e7cb34e5a28d3821bd12d4a5b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-03-23 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / Working with resolution of situations-problem is of great importance on Mathematics Teaching-Learning process and on Teaching-Learning process of others disciplines, once the human being is all the time challenged to resolve problems in their daily life. The results presented on this assignment contemplate the efforts made for the validation of teaching system of first degree equation with two unknowns to the students from Middle School through situations-problem. The methodology applied was the didactic engineering. The specific goals are diluted on the stages of the methodology which are described on the introduction characterizing the previous analysis. At the stage of the analysis a priori was made the diagnosis of the difficulties presented by the students and theoretical conception. During testing we have developed a didactic sequence that we consider to be appropriate to teaching system of first degree equations bringing to the students ways of resolution, an adapted method of problems resolution, the use of teaching material as graphics board and Geogebra software. The results collected by means of the development of the didactic proposed, as well as the participation of the students on the activities proposed, observed in the analysis a posteriori will be faced with the hypothesis raised on this research assignment for the effect of validation process. We have noticed even though many teachers recognize the importance of the use of situations-problem on Mathematics Teaching, the majority doesn´t do it in satisfactory way, working mainly with the problems proposed in didactics books, without regard stages proposed on the methodology of resolution problems. Through analysis from the results achieved by the students, raising the percentage of hits in solving problems about systems of first degree equation with two unknowns in activities proposed, assessments and simulated test applied by school at the end of academic year, we can conclude that the didactic sequence presented on this assignment could propitiate the learning process.

This diploma work completely deals with problems of the evaluation by a teacher. In the introductory part there are described specifics of the school evaluation, its importance and sense. There is also mentioned a survey of many types, functions of the evaluation and methods, which are mostly being used for the pupils{\crq} evaluation at school. It also discusses an influence of the evaluation on the pupil. It summarizes principles and processes of the pupils{\crq} evaluation, which are established and obligatory for schools in the Czech Republic. It analyzes the problems of basic forms of the evaluation, which are mostly being used at our schools; those are the word evaluation and the classification by marks; and it also describes the portfolio that is a new alternative form of the evaluation. It concentrates on important aspects of pupil{\crq} evaluations, principles, those are important to know and they must be observed. It devotes to an importance of positive and negative evaluations and also to a smart question of the evaluation objectivity. It refers to mistakes which are important to avoid. It points out the importance of individual approach to pupils, especially to pupils with specific learning difficulties. It analyzes the evaluation problems of the pupils with learning disability and it refers to the mistakes that are necessary to remember in the evaluation of pupils with specific learning difficulties.

Kunsterapie met die dowe kind (Afrikaans)

Botha, Karin 09 November 2005 (has links)
The deaf child’s primary handicap is his inability to hear human speech. The whole functioning of the deaf child is hampered by his hearing loss. This implicates that deafness can cause secondary problems such as: -- language problems; -- speech problems; -- thinking problems; -- social problems; -- emotional problems; -- educational problems; -- occupational problems; and -- family problems. These problems impose a special challenge to people who intervene with deaf children. The deaf child cannot communicate intelligibly. The therapist has to pay special attention to this problem and to the way in which communication will commence and continue. Pedotherapeutic intervention implicates effective communication. The use of language plays an important role in the Educational-psychological practice. Diagnostic tests and therapeutic techniques require an average language capability. The therapist must seek alternative concrete ways in which to assess the deaf child and to solve the child’s problems. The creation of a work of art is a concrete sensory act. A variety of authors state that, most children can project their deepest inner feelings through a work of art without fear and pain. The instructions given for art therapy are simple and most children feel safe to create. A child’s work of art has diagnostic as well as therapeutic value. It is important that the therapist will recognize and interpret the projected symbols and that he will use it to change and expand the deaf child’s world of meaning. During the assessment of a child’s drawing the therapist must take aspects of the art work, such as colour, form, line, art material, the content of the drawing, the perceptual and motor development of the child, the child’s age, non-verbal communication and verbal communication during the creative process, into consideration. The therapist must not use above-mentioned directions at random. Every individual’s work of art must be assessed in a phenomenological way, before any conclusions can be made. A private, well equipped art therapy room is necessary for the child in order to feel safe to explore and create. The therapist who intervenes with deaf children has to be well trained. He must have knowledge and experience of deafness, know sign language and should have exceptional language abilities. In this study the therapist applied art therapy with a deaf child. Both the child and his educators were involved in therapy. The therapy was successful. Most of the therapeutic goals were achieved. The therapist needed to adapt the way of communication in order to enhance the level of communication between her and the deaf child. Art therapy can be successfully used with the deaf child because adequate communication is possible, the deaf child can identify with the therapeutic content and transcendence is possible. Some deaf children do not respond well to art therapy. The uniqueness of each deaf child should be taken into consideration before a therapeutic technique can be chosen. / Dissertation (MEd (Educational Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Orthopaedic Surgery / unrestricted

Addressing behavioural challenges of orphaned learners who head households : a psycho-educational programme to enhance learning

Mushayi, Josaya 11 1900 (has links)
The changing structures of families and the increase in the number of child headed families are progressively becoming noticeable both nationally and internationally. Reviewed literature has confirmed that the increasing trend in orphan status among school going age over the period 2002-2009, is of major concern. A growing body of literature also indicates that child headed families and orphan hood are becoming common phenomena in many African countries in general and South Africa in particular. This scenario presents certain challenges especially on the orphaned children‘s learning and schooling experiences as well as their behavioural and social interaction patterns. The phenomenon calls for greater educational support for such learners at school and home. Increasingly, teachers and schools world over are expected to respond to the changing educational environment and contextual realities of schooling that include the orphaned learners who head households. The aim of this thesis was to address the behavioural challenges that orphaned learners who head household experience and to develop a psycho-educational programme to support their learning. A qualitative instrumental case study research design was used with a study sample of 30 orphaned learners living in child headed household aged 10 to 16 years, ten Life Orientation Teachers, four members of School Management Team, eight members of School Based Support Team (SBST) and four Social Workers who were purposively sampled to participate in the study. The study was conducted in 15 classes located at four schools (3 secondary, 1 primary) in Taledi Area, Mamusa Circuit located in Ipelegeng Township of Schweizer Reneke town under Dr R.S. Ruth Momphati District-North West Province, South Africa. In order to answer the research question, data was collected using a variety of data collection techniques. These were semi structured interviews, observations and documentary analysis. Data obtained was analysed using the interpretational analysis method to determine the common themes and sub themes describing the behavioural challenges that the orphaned learners experience during schooling in the playgrounds and in the classroom. Data analysed revealed that although orphaned learners are socially strong with regard to interaction with their peers, they experience learning difficulties in the classroom leading to underperformance and grade repeating. The study also noted that orphaned learners exhibit negative conduct behaviours and negative social interaction patterns with their LO teachers and members of the school management team. The study also revealed that emotional problems and lack of material support are common phenomena amongst these learners. The study arrived at the recommendation that a psycho-educational programme to address the behavioural challenges be developed to enhance the academic performance of the learners. / Psychology of Education / D.
