Community Perception of Gunplay inModern FPS games : within Call of Duty: Warzone and Rainbow Six: Siege

McCabe, Andrew January 2023 (has links)
This study aims to look at multiple modern first person shooter games communitiesto see how their perception of gunplay may be similar or differ from one another. The study uses Toh’s (2016) model for players' feelings towards their primaryweapons to form a questionnaire, the questionnaire is based upon previous researchwithin appraisal theory, player goals , and players feelings. The questionnaire wasthen sent out to Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone and Rainbow Six: Siegecommunities to gather their perception of weapon attributes and their effects onplayers. After analysis of the data similarities and differences were found withinspecific weapon attributes that showed how the communities valued variousweapon attributes. Call of Duty: Warzone focused more on lowering time to kill, whileRainbow Six: Siege focused more on being able to accurately breach and hold offenemies in close engagments. Using background research a possible way to showgame developers how to increase a player's play time from the data collected is alsodiscussed. With the help of an acafen approach a discussion on possibilities as towhy the games have different values and preferences is also had.

The psycho-social work environment of e-sport professionals : Applying the Job demands-resources theory to pro-players

Jonsson, Josefine January 2018 (has links)
In recent years, the area of e-sports has been growing rapidly and has consequentially drawn attention from the general public as well as researchers. However, research in this area still remains sparse, especially concerning the psycho-social work environment of e-sports professionals. This is even more true when referring to research that includes the individual perspective of pro-players. To provide more knowledge in this area, this study aims to explore what psychosocial aspects are mentioned by pro-players in documentary interviews and investigate if the experiences portrayed could be understood using a theoretical perspective by applying the JD-R theory. This study is based on 12 docu-series episodes featuring two League of Legends teams where 10 different pro-players participated. The research sample could both be considered availability sampling, since the data was already available, and purposeful sampling, choosing a sample consisting of pro-players. The episodes were transcribed and then analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Many psycho-social aspects emerged from the analysis, resulting in two higher themes where the first theme “Working as a pro-player” portrays what the profession entails and the second, “The interdependent work”, depicts the experience of being a pro, a teammate and an individual at the same time. By applying the JD-R theory on the aspects mentioned, it was concluded that these experiences indeed could be understood using a theoretical approach, providing incentives to conduct future research in the area. Possible areas of research interest were also presented in relation to this.

The Faust legend and its musical manifestations : a historical overview

Roos, Dorette Maria 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MMus (Music))-- Stellenbosch University, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis explores the Faust legend and its musical manifestations since the 19th century. The objective is to provide a thorough background to the legend, before drawing up an account of compositions inspired by the Faust legend. Firstly, the origin of the legend is investigated, followed by a brief summary of the most important literary works on the subject of Faust. This is followed by a comprehensive outline of the story as told by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and then the most significant compositions inspired by the legend are discussed. A short section containing comparisons of the compositions and the conclusions of the study appears at the end. The legend tells the story of Faust, a scholar, philosopher and alchemist in search of divine knowledge, power and pleasure. Faust encounters the devil and makes a pact with him in which he agrees to surrender his immortal soul, if the devil can satisfy Faust’s thirst for knowledge and grant him the experience of true happiness. The Faust legend is a very popular theme among composers and artists. One of the reasons for the success of the Faust legend is its universal appeal. This has led to various composers using the material as the basis for their works. Goethe’s version of the legend has proven to be the most popular source for composers. To produce a composition that attempts to capture the drama in its entirety, including its psychological and spiritual elements, is not feasible. Works centred on a smaller section, scene or character from Goethe’s Faust were often more successful than the larger operatic compositions. Like all great universal ideas, the Faust legend lends itself to an abundance of interpretations. Similarities between works are rare. Each composer who made use of the Faust legend interpreted it subjectively, which has produced many unique and varied compositions.

Not Just a Legend: The Gendered Conquest of a Spanish American Society

Aguilar, Angie I 01 January 2015 (has links)
After the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821) ending Spanish rule, Mexico formed a republic. By the 1880s there was ‘reformation’ in the Mexican church and the growth of ‘modernization’ in a caste based society governed by dictators. Amid all these changes, there was a growth of a nationalist ideology which sought to break free of Spanish roots in search of a new “Mexican” identity. As nationalism unfolded, there was a resurgence of some histories that became legends. I’ve noted a trend among legends with female protagonists, legends tend to portray women in a negative way. Two legends that have caught my attention emerge from the lives of two women from colonial Mexico. One is based on the life of Malinalli (Malintzin), a Nahuatl woman from sixteenth-century Mexico who at a young age was sold into slavery, but eventually became a talented interpreter, advisor and negotiator for Hernán Cortés during conquest. The other legend is about María Magdalena Dávalos y Orosco, a widowed woman from eighteenth-century Mexico who was able to gain control of her husband’s estate and manage many of his properties. More often than not, I’ve found that the legends that transpired from the retelling of an account of past events women’s lives, exclude their accomplishments and emphasize their “deviant” tendencies. Through the use of oral histories, scholarly articles and texts relevant to Malintzin and María Magdalena’s circumstances, I will explore their legends to argue that they have a lot of valuable information to offer.

GG, EZ - Strategic Interaction Within "League of Legends" Ranked Games : A virtual ethnography of temporary teams from the "League of Legends" community

Tampa, Ramona January 2017 (has links)
Online gaming communities have met a well-deserved rise in academic interest in recent years, yet the focus seems to linger or long-term or permanent communities; virtual temporary teams are a subject which leaves room for rich interpretations still. In this spirit, this thesis addresses the question of how strangers collaborate in solving complex tasks together, by way of analysing temporary teams in the “League of Legends” community. The focus of the study are the communicative and strategic practices that players employ during ranked games in their attempt to defeat the opposing team, as well as what might determine them to engage in such endeavours. The thesis sets off by presenting relevant information about the competitive League of Legends community, in the spirit of introducing the reader to a League-specific culture that will hopefully become familiar by the end of the study. This is followed by an account of related research on this matter, in terms of how previous studies connect to the one at hand. The theoretical foundation that follows is essential to the discussion of the findings. The methodological approach is essentially a cyber-ethnography, with a focus on two methods: textual analysis and semi-structured interviews. The main findings show a surprising level of complexity in what communicative and strategic patterns are concerned, which also points towards the interdependency between them. Moreover, the results show a clear connection between in-game social strata and player motivation in competitive communities. This study aims not only to update the knowledge we have on how social interactions are shaping and evolving in the context of online gaming, but also to provide results that are transferable and applicable in other fields of research; from culture and society to more particular areas such as management training and learning at work, a multitude of academic fields can benefit from and hopefully expand on the outcome of this thesis.

Performing "Camp, Vamp & Femme Fatale": Revisiting, Reinventing & Retelling the Lives of Post-Death, Retro-Gothic Women

Ruane, Richard T. 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the production process for "Camp, Vamp and Femme Fatale," performed at the University of North Texas in April of 1997. The first chapter applies Henry Jenkins's theory of textual poaching to the authors' and cast's reappropriation of cultural narratives about female vampires. The chapter goes on to survey the narrative, cinematic and critical work on women as vampires. As many of the texts were developed as part of the fantasy role-playing game Vampire: The Masquerade, this chapter also surveys how fantasy role-playing develops unpublished texts that can make fruitful ground for performance studies. The second chapter examines the rehearsal and production process in comparison to the work of Glenda Dickerson and other feminist directors.

The objective of the research was to register and to document the diversity of the cultural expressions of the municipal district and to identify reasons for the reduction and disappearance of several manifestations. Therefore, the study opted for an exploratory nature based research, grounded on a qualitative approach. Data collection instruments were defined due to their purposes. Semi-structured interviews, field observations and document analysis were conducted. The Terra Ronca State Park was created in 1989 to protect a valuable speleological complex, in which seven of the thirty largest caves in Brazil are found. That municipal district, located in the goiano northeast, appeared in the period of the gold cycle and is nowadays inserted in an area considered as the poverty corridor of the State of Goiás. Its interior shelters a cultural and religious heritage, which is quite rich and diversified, as the Pilgrimage to Bom Jesus da Lapa , which has its cultural representation with masses, baptisms and parties developed inside a cave. Of the more than three hundred caves which compose the Park, the Terra Ronca cave is the best known and most surrounded by mysteries and legends. Among them, it is said that the cave served as a hiding place for the city s population when the Coluna Prestes , a group of rebels, passed through São Domingos. Nowadays, the people that live in the Park go through problems such as the reduction or disappearance of their cultural expressions, an outstanding characteristic of their regional identity. The results indicated that the implementation of the Conservation Unit of the Terra Ronca State Park was the great motivator of several conflicts, which could be noticed in issues related to the land. The Unit did not consider the reconciliation between the human occupation and the environmental preservation, provoking a strong feeling of rejection, insecurity and dissatisfaction among landowners in the area. This social-environmental conflict provoked serious reflexes on the maintenance and preservation of the cultural aspects, in particular, on the preservation of their myths, legends and traditions.
