Large eddy simulation of syngas-air diffusion flames with artificial neural networks based chemical kineticsSanyal, Anuradha 07 September 2011 (has links)
In the present study syngas-air diffusion flames are simulated using LES with artificial neural network (ANN) based chemical kinetics modeling and the results are compared with previous direct numerical simulation (DNS) study, which exhibits significant extinction-reignition and forms a challenging problem for ANN. The objective is to obtain speed-up in chemistry computation while still having the accuracy of stiff ODE solver. The ANN methodology is used in two ways: 1) to compute the instantaneous source term in the linear eddy mixing (LEM) subgrid combustion model used within LES framework, i.e., laminar-ANN used within LEMLES framework (LANN-LEMLES), and 2) to compute the filtered source terms directly within the LES framework, i.e., turbulent-ANN used within LES (TANN-LES), which further dicreases the computational speed. A thermo-chemical database is generated from a standalone one-dimensional LEM simulation and used to train the LANN for species source terms on grid-size of Kolmogorov scale. To train the TANN coefficients the thermo-chemical database from the standalone LEM simulation is filtered over the LES grid-size and then used for training. To evaluate the performance of the TANN methodology, the low Re test case is simulated with direct integration for chemical kinetics modeling in LEM subgrid combustion model within the LES framework (DI-LEMLES), LANN-LEMLES andTANN-LES. The TANN is generated for a low range of Ret in order to simulate the specific test case. The conditional statistics and pdfs of key scalars and the temporal evolution of the temperature and scalar dissipation rates are compared with the data extracted from DNS. Results show that the TANN-LES methodology can capture the extinction-reignition physics with reasonable accuracy compared to the DNS. Another TANN is generated for a high range of Ret expected to simulate test cases with different Re and a range of grid resolutions. The flame structure and the scalar dissipation rate statistics are analyzed to investigate success of the same TANN in simulating a range of test cases. Results show that the TANN-LES using TANN generated fora large range of Ret is capable of capturing the extinction-reignition physics with a very little loss of accuracy compared to the TANN-LES using TANN generated for the specific test case. The speed-up obtained by TANN-LES is significant compared to DI-LEMLES and LANN-LEMLES.

Poe, Lem, and the art and science of literatureSwirski, Peter January 1995 (has links)
Transcending the boundaries of literature, the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Stanislaw Lem contribute to a dialogue between literary, philosophical, and scientific cultures. A critical approach to these writers that ignores the epistemic dimension in their works opens itself to the charge of misunderstanding their artistic goals and aspirations. In my dissertation I thus define, justify, and conduct an interdisciplinary study of Poe and Lem's works. / My project is underwritten by the epistemological assumption that literary works, and notably works of fiction, can make a contribution to knowledge that can be assessed in terms of interdisciplinary criteria. In the first chapter, where I discuss literature and knowledge within the interdisciplinary context, I examine various epistemological arguments in light of my central assertion. Next I examine the concepts involved in the discussion of literary works. Following the pragmatic re-orientation in literary and philosophical aesthetics, many fundamental concepts we take for granted--artworks, fictions, and texts among them--require exact re-examination and definition. Consequently, in Chapters Two and Three I review and refine the recent theories concerning the nature of works of art, the specificity of literary fictions, and the problem of literary interpretations. / My subsequent discussion of Poe and Lem is built on the theoretical base of (literary) epistemology and analytical aesthetics. I study Poe and Lem's literary fictions and theoretical essays, and the contributions they make to various fields of inquiry. In the process I critique, and sometimes refine, the explicit and implicit hypotheses articulated in their works. Specifically In Chapters Four and Five I discuss strategic and game theoretic models in the interpretation of fiction, including the concepts of communication and rationality. In Chapter Six, completing the epistemological circle inaugurated in Chapter One, I discuss the epistemological and cosmological theories proposed in Poe's "Eureka".

Polytopes Arising from Binary Multi-way Contingency Tables and Characteristic Imsets for Bayesian NetworksXi, Jing 01 January 2013 (has links)
The main theme of this dissertation is the study of polytopes arising from binary multi-way contingency tables and characteristic imsets for Bayesian networks.
Firstly, we study on three-way tables whose entries are independent Bernoulli ran- dom variables with canonical parameters under no three-way interaction generalized linear models. Here, we use the sequential importance sampling (SIS) method with the conditional Poisson (CP) distribution to sample binary three-way tables with the sufficient statistics, i.e., all two-way marginal sums, fixed. Compared with Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) approach with a Markov basis (MB), SIS procedure has the advantage that it does not require expensive or prohibitive pre-computations. Note that this problem can also be considered as estimating the number of lattice points inside the polytope defined by the zero-one and two-way marginal constraints. The theorems in Chapter 2 give the parameters for the CP distribution on each column when it is sampled. In this chapter, we also present the algorithms, the simulation results, and the results for Samson’s monks data.
Bayesian networks, a part of the family of probabilistic graphical models, are widely applied in many areas and much work has been done in model selections for Bayesian networks. The second part of this dissertation investigates the problem of finding the optimal graph by using characteristic imsets, where characteristic imsets are defined as 0-1 vector representations of Bayesian networks which are unique up to Markov equivalence. Characteristic imset polytopes are defined as the convex hull of all characteristic imsets we consider. It was proven that the problem of finding optimal Bayesian network for a specific dataset can be converted to a linear programming problem over the characteristic imset polytope [51]. In Chapter 3, we first consider characteristic imset polytopes for all diagnosis models and show that these polytopes are direct product of simplices. Then we give the combinatorial description of all edges and all facets of these polytopes. At the end of this chapter, we generalize these results to the characteristic imset polytopes for all Bayesian networks with a fixed underlying ordering of nodes.
Chapter 4 includes discussion and future work on these two topics.

Stuff, Universals, and Things: some themes from metaphysicsIslam, Shaheen 11 1900 (has links)
The problem which spurred this thesis has three components. First, there are entities which we may call stuff – alluded to by uncountable nouns; these entities seem to have a duality for behaving like both (i) an object or a discrete middle size substance – which are supposed to be non-repetitive and independent, and as well as (ii) a concept or a universal – which are repetitive but dependent (on some independent substances). Second, a dichotomy persists between the two aspects of the duality: what is non-repeatable cannot be repeatable and, conversely what is repeatable cannot be non-repeatable. Third, there is a background of how we conventionally do logic, and our present trend of doing – or rather, doing away with – metaphysics.
The thesis then came up with four chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the question – how can, or how do we deal with stuff predication following the conventional guidelines? – where by stuff predication I mean any predication involving stuff. I also tried there to find out some clues from Frege’s works. Chapter 2 dives into some related issues pertaining to language, grammar and the notion of constitution. Chapter 3 examines critically two types of theories or views (one of them has been recently championed by Michael Dummett and P.F. Strawson; the other by David Armstrong) arguing how repetitive entities differ from the non-repetitive ones. My counter argument is that those arguments are either fallacious or not even complete. Chapter 4 takes an Aristotelian perspective following the lead of E.J. Lowe.
The thesis has a pessimistic tone at the end: the conventional method is quite inadequate as it misses some subtleties pertaining to stuff, nor could Lowe’s Aristotle take us too far. Nevertheless, one cannot – I hope – miss some deeper insights glimpsing into this work. Particularly, Chapter 3 opens up some new venues to think about: our thoughts about our own arguments and proofs may need some revamping.

Master s thesis is focused on flaring of tubes endings. There are also mentioned theoretical pieces of knowledge which relate to tubes endings by a flat edge and a cone. The following experiments performed with the own material and tools made by the author s design. Experiments in the production of the flat collar led to the speedy rotation of the sample ending. Experiments with the conical ending brought valuable results from the point of view of comparison of theoretical and measured powers, distribution of thicknesses and utilization of the deformation web to set voltage-deformation state. The dimension excent of the conical ending was limited by the formation of buckling in the cylindrical part of the tube.

Stability Analysis of Embankments Founded on Clay : a comparison between LEM & 2D/3D FEMHabibnezhad, Zhaleh January 2014 (has links)
Rapid constructed embankments founded on soft deposits have a negative influence on the short term stability. Many engineering constructions such as road and railway embankments are often constructed on soft clay deposits. In stability analysis calculation of safety factor (SF), as the primary design criteria can be evaluated through different numerous methods such as limit equilibrium method (LEM) and finite element method (FEM). It is of particular interest to determine/estimate appropriate stability of the specified embankment which is highly dependent on the analysis method used. Therefore, it is a challenge for geotechnical engineers to judge which analysis method can simulate better the reality. The aim of this thesis is to increase understanding applicability of the three applied programs; Plaxis2D, Plaxis3D and Slope/W in simulating and stability analysis/estimation of embankments founded on clay deposits. The work has involved analysis and comparison of the stability through estimate of the SF and the critical failure surfaces obtained through 2D and 3D programs. Four case configurations were studied for the stability analysis. In each case variation in plastic parameters of clay (φ-c) or load geometry, was the scenario to make the comparison analysis. Moreover, application FEM3D offers an attractive alternative to traditional approaches to the problem (especially for LEM). The main conclusions from this study are the following: (1) Concerning the three applied programs, FEM3D has the minimum SF sensitivity to change in plastic parameters of clay deposit. (2) For embankments founded on clay deposit, the 3D failure surfaces are easily found via the FEM3D analysis program, which is closer to reality, while failure results of 2D analysis programs can never occur in reality. (3) Using 2D analysis method instead of 3D, to investigate the stability of 3D embankment model tend to give higher SF results up to 14% for embankments founded on undrained clay deposit. (4) The failure surfaces in 3D analysis are likely to be shallower than in the corresponding 2D model. (5) Results from the 3D analysis through hand calculation and program calculation do not correspond with each other for embankment founded on soft clay deposit. The first reason is rooted in limitation of the hand formula. The formula is suitable for embankment founded on one layer deposit (soil); however an embankment founded on 3 layers of deposit (soil) was analyzed in this study. The second reason is related to applied method of calculation. 3D hand calculation formula is based on method of slices however; analysis method in program calculation is based on FEM.

Bakgrund: Ungefär 2 250 amputationer utförs i Sverige varje år med bakomliggande orsaker som cirkulationssjukdomar, diabetes eller trauma. Det är en stor omställning för den amputerade personen och hälsan. Saker som påverkas efter en amputation av nedre extremitet kan vara det dagliga livet, ekonomin, hemmet, jobbet, sociala relationer, sättet att se på sig själv och smärtproblematik. I mötet med en amputerad person är det viktigt att sjuksköterskan uppmärksammar behov, sätter uppnåeliga mål och att finnas där för personen.Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva hur personer med nedre amputerade extremiteter upplever sitt dagliga liv.Metod: Arbetet är en litteraturöversikt, med 12 artiklar som analyserades enligt Graneheim och Lundmans (2004) manifesta kvalitativa innehållsanalys. Deltagarna i artiklarna skulle vara över 18 år, hade nedre amputerade extremitet/extremiteter och deltagarnas upplevelser berörde situationer utanför sjukhus- och vårdmiljön.Resultat: Analysen visade på fyra huvudkategorier: att amputerade personer blev bemött på olika sätt av familj och vänner, att den nedsatta rörligheten påverkade personerna, känslomässiga upplevelser och upplevelser av smärta och behandlingDiskussion: Sjuksköterskan är viktig både som hjälp och stöd tiden efter en nedre amputation och att ge personcentrerad vård.Slutsats: Ökade kunskaper ger sjuksköterskan djupare förståelser för den amputerade personen. Forskning kring hur amputationer påverkar kroppen psykiskt och fysiskt behövs för att underlätta för personen i det dagliga livet. / <p>2023-03-23</p>

AN ANALYSIS OF THE FOUCAULDIAN ELEMENTS OF POWER-KNOWLEDGE IN STANISLAW LEM’S SOLARIS AND ARTHUR C. CLARKE’S RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMAUnknown Date (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the elements of power-knowledge in two SF novels written amid the Space Race during the Cold War era. While the dominant interest of both Stanislaw Lem’s Solaris and Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama generally revolves around the implications of human interactions with an alien presence, my focus is primarily on the power structures that propel those interactions: questioning the intentions of scientific pursuits and analyzing the effects of Foucauldian power relations on the human individual. I do this by applying Foucault’s theories of the duality of the subject and his work on biopolitics.
