This thesis, presented as a research-creation project, sounds the power of the light and the shadow in movement. Inspired by the writings of Henri Alekan and Fabrice Revault d’Allonnes, we will point out a work method used to shape the light, that rests upon two essential steps: the first step is called éclairement, and calls on a hiérarchisation of the light sources. The second step is one of lumination, that is equivalent to a dramatisation of the light. The method, considered in a classico-baroque context, will open the door to some analysis of the light’s variations. We will explore two techniques used by cinematographers: the conception of a light «path», and the changement à vue. We will study these two techniques through the work of various cinematographers, such as Vittorio Storaro and Darius Khondji. We will apply these two techniques in a creation that is linked to this thesis, to better comprehend the subtleties of the light in movement, and understand the difficulties that come along with the practice of cinematography. Thus, the creation will be a true exploration for me, and a practical and theoretical learning process about the possibilities and the complexity of light and shadow. This stammering and hesitating approach intends to understand the poetic potential of the light and the shadow.

In order to reduce the impact of global warming, the European Commission has decided in the continuation of the Kyoto protocol to reduce drastically greenhouse gas emissions. In this matter, the progressive replacement of thermal vehicles by electric ones is considered as a key objective. For that purpose, several prerequisites must be considered for the rapid deployment of Electrical Vehicles (EV) in the European market. The first of these prerequisites consists in the design of a new generation of batteries with higher energy efficiency, larger capacity and improved robustness. The second one is the design and rapid deployment of cost effective charging infrastructures. At last, the emergence of European standards in all these matters is an imperious necessity for the viability of the EVs European market. This thesis is mainly focused on the second of these three prerequisites. It is widely admitted that in the short term, EVs usage will be essentially limited to urban areas before being extended to the whole territory. As it is considered by the French National TELEWATT research project to which we have contributed, street lighting networks can be used judiciously to deploy in the short term low cost charging infrastructures. The basic principle of this project consists in coupling to each street light one or two EV's charging stations if one or two parking spots are located nearby. Various electrical constraints specified in the TELEWATT project must be satisfied to enable EVs' charging without degrading the quality of the lighting system. In this thesis, we begin to demonstrate the feasibility of such an operation. For that purpose, we have developed a simulator enablingto depict the dynamic behavior of the global system. The strength and originality of this simulator resides in its capacity to determine in real-time and with the necessary precision if an EV can effectively be connected to a charging station. The response to this question depends on static and dynamic characteristics of the street lighting network and on the state of charge of the batteries of both the connected and candidate EVs. The dynamism of the charging process of each EV strongly depends on the instantaneous power consumed by the global infrastructure. The second original result of this thesis consists in the design of scheduling policies to activate the various charging stations. Our objective is to propose via these scheduling policies, various types of guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS) to the end-users. Such guarantees can be declined for instance in terms of expected state of charge for a given parking term

Energy Efficiency and Conservation Attitudes: An Exploration of a Landscape of ChoicesMcClaren, Mersiha Spahic 27 February 2015 (has links)
This study explored energy-related attitudes and energy-saving behaviors that are no- or low-cost and relatively simple to perform. This study relied on two data sources: a longitudinal but cross-sectional survey of 4,102 U.S. residents (five biennial waves of this survey were conducted from 2002 to 2010) and a 2010 cross-sectional survey of 2,000 California residents. These two surveys contained data on two no- and low-cost behaviors: changing thermostat setting to save energy (no-cost behavior) and CFL installation behavior (low-cost behavior). In terms of attitudes, two attitudinal measures emerged from these data following a Cronbach's alpha and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA): the pro-environmental attitude and concern for the energy use in the U.S. society. These two attitudes, along with other socio-demographic and external factors (home ownership, weather, price of energy, etc.), were examined to assess whether attitude-behavior relationships persisted over time, were more prominent across certain groups, or were constrained by income or other socio-demographic factors. Three theoretical viewpoints of how attitudes may relate to behavior guided the analysis on how attitudes and contextual factors may inter-relate either directly or through a moderator variable to affect thermostat-setting and CFL installation behavior.
Results from these analyses revealed four important patterns. First, a relationship between the pro-environmental attitude and the two behaviors (thermostat-setting and CFL installation behavior) was weak but persistent across time. Second, financial factors such as income moderated the pro-environmental attitude and CFL installation relationship, indicating that the pro-environmental attitude could influence the behavior in those situations where financial resources are sufficient to comfortably allow the consumer to participate. Third, this study documented that most people reported changing thermostat settings to save energy or having one or more CFLs in their homes. This finding suggests that organizations, policy makers, or energy efficiency program administrators may want to assess whether they should pursue these two behaviors further, since they appear to be very common in the U.S. population. Last, this study showed that thermostat-setting and CFL installation behavior have multi-factorial influences; many factors in addition to attitudes were significantly associated with these behaviors, and all these factors together explained no more than 16% of behavioral variance. This suggested that if energy-saving behaviors are a function of many different variables, of which none appear to be the "silver bullet" in explaining the behaviors (as noted in this study), then policy analysis should explore a broader number of causal pathways and entertain a wider range of interventions to influence consumers to save energy.

Energeticky úsporný dům lékařů a sester v Kroměříži. / Energy-efficient house for doctors and nurses in the city of Kroměříž.Dvořák, Petr January 2022 (has links)
The aim of my thesis is to design the project documentation of an energy-efficient house for doctors and nurses, located near the hospital in Kroměříž. The work is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the architectural and construction design of the building. The second part deals with the design of the technical equipment of the building and its layout. The third part deals with the design and comparison of different cooling sources. The building is a two-storey building with a flat, vegetated roof and its design is in the building permit stage. On the ground floor there is a bistro, a dining room with food preparation, technical rooms and 3 apartments. On the second floor there are 9 apartments and a lounge. In the middle of the building there is a circulation area with a staircase, a glass elevator and a large skylight that illuminates the whole area. Heating is provided by a gas condensing boiler. Ventilation is provided by three air handling units. A hybrid cooling system with heat recuperation from the refrigerant is designed. For partial electricity demand, 62 photovoltaic panels are installed on the roof of the building. The third part deals with the design of alternative cooling solutions for the building. Multi split, VRV and water cooling system with roof top chiller are proposed in addition to the already designed hybrid system. These four alternatives are compared with each other and the most suitable option is then designed.

Human Systems Integration of an Extravehicular Activity Space Suit Augmented Reality Display SystemMitra, Paromita 10 August 2018 (has links)
During an extravehicular activity (EVA), the role of an astronaut involves a multitude of complex tasks. Whether that task is a science experiment aboard the International Space Station, or traversing extraterrestrial terrain – attention, communication, and instruction are essential. As an aid, augmented reality (AR) can portray suit informatics and procedures within line-of-sight while minimizing attentional loss. Currently, there exists little research highlighting the human systems considerations to qualify AR systems for space suit applications. This study quantifies user interface (UI) and human performance measures for an AR prototype on the Mark III space suit. For user testing, 21 military pilots and personnel (11 men, 10 women) evaluated UI search tasks and completed a series of AR-instructed EVA dexterity tasks in an elevated luminosity, background clutter, and workload scenario. UI results suggest correlations for readability and usability; whereas, human performance results provide situational awareness, workload, and task performance data.

Hållbara torg : En studie av Stora Torget i Södertälje ur ett socialt hållbarhetsperspektiv / Sustainable squares : A study of Stora Torget in Södertälje from a social sustainability perspectiveBarchin, Elias, Lidström, Ludvig January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this report is to explore what kind of architectural design qualities are included in socially sustainable squares and how these qualities can be applied to Stora Torget in the municipality of Södertälje. Furthermore, the work also seeks to produce a detailed development proposal for the square through anchoring the work in the literature, the will of the people and the prior municipal work. In doing so the following questions have been answered: - How can the environment for those strolling through and staying at Stora Torget be developed in a socially sustainable way? In-depth questions: - What does city life and the outdoor environment look like on Stora Torget today? - How could Stora Torget be further developed to promote a socially sustainable city life? To answer these questions, a triangulation method has been applied which includes a literature study, a survey with the people on the square and an interview with a representative from the municipality. The literature study provided great insight into the qualities of a good civic environment and how these qualities ought to be applied to the development proposal. The survey brought forth the opinions and wishes of the people who in the end would be the ones that indulge in the square. By interviewing a representative from the municipality, the report manages to ground itself and build on the previous work of the municipality. The study has resulted in a detailed development proposal that includes seven sections of improvements that seek to further develop the square in a socially sustainable fashion. The sections of improvements include places for play, sports and resting, vegetation and greenery, lighting, dedicated walking and cycling paths to name a few. The study does not conclude that the development proposal is the one and only way of improving the square's social sustainability. The study is however confident that the implementation of at least some of these qualities would garner a net positive in the work of a more socially sustainable city life.
