Under de senaste åren har risk kapitalmarknaderna stått inför flera signifikanta problem. Den svenska VC industrin har minskat med över 60 % sedan Dotcom-kraschen. Antalet aktiva VC- företag har minskat i antal från 100-200 till endast 5-10 större VC-företag. Jämför man dagens marknad med hur den såg ut innan Dotcom-kraschen, så fanns det betydligt fler aktiva företag inom den svenska VC-industrin. Nya finansieringsformer har trätt in på marknaden som bland annat Evergreen fonder och crowd-funding. Den svenska VC-industrin har kännetecknats av en "rensning" av marknaden var tionde år, och var femte år uppstår en mindre krasch på marknaden. De svenska riskkapitalaktörerna har tagit en högre risk än vad som faktiskt var motiverat. Syndikatinvesteringar görs för att undvika investerarnas enskilda risk. Detta fenomen kan illustreras genom de två lyckosamma Svenska investeringarna, Spotify och iZettle. Riskkapitalmarknaden har varit karakteriserad av legala hinder vilket skapat flera stora problem. Trots detta finns det positiva trender och förändringar som idag genomförs på marknaden. Dett kommer lyfts fram ytterligare i arbetet. Bland annat har det diskuterats att införa ett skatteavdrag vilket anses vara fördelaktigt för riskkapitalbolagen. Modeling of Life-Limited Spare Units in a Steady-State ScenarioHallin, Sara January 2015 (has links)
This thesis studies the problem of modeling life-limited spare units in a steady-state scenario. This means that units that have a predefined lifespan are to be modeled in a scenario where all conditions are kept constant and all transients have faded out. OPUS10 is a spare parts optimization software developed by Systecon AB. There is no way to explicitly model the life-limited units in OPUS10, although there are different approximate models that are built on adjustments of the failure rate and repair fraction or the definition of preventive maintenance. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the usage of life-limited items in real life and to investigate what approximated models different OPUS10 users will utilize in their modeling of life-limited units. Furthermore, the objective is to analyze the consequences of the approximated models and to investigate the possibility of an improved model. The results show that the main interest when choosing which approximated model to use is the type of life limit. There are three different types of operating time life limits investigated. Either the unit is discarded immediately after the life limit is reached, or it is instead discarded at the next failure. There is also the possibility of resetting of the life limit timer at each maintenance. In all three cases, it is shown that if choosing the most fitting approximate model, the results are very accurate. If the life limit is instead measured in calendar time, even the best approximation will give an under-estimation of the expected number of backorders. It is also shown that most of the OPUS10 users model life-limited units as preventive maintenance with discard, which is not the best approximation in any of the types of life limits.

<p>Imaging in low light is difficult because the number of photons arriving at the image sensor is low. This is a major technological challenge for applications such as surveillance and autonomous driving. Conventional CMOS image sensors (CIS) circumvent this issue by using techniques such as burst photography. However, this process is slow and it does not solve the underlying problem that the CIS cannot efficiently capture the signals arriving at the sensors. This dissertation focuses on solving this problem using a combination of better image sensors (Quanta Image Sensors) and computational imaging techniques.</p>

<p>The first part of the thesis involves understanding how the quanta image sensors work and how they can be used to solve the low light imaging problem. The second part is about the algorithms that can deal with images obtained in low light. The contributions in this part include – 1. Understanding and proposing solutions for the Poisson noise model, 2. Proposing a new machine learning scheme called student-teacher learning for helping neural networks deal with noise, and 3. Developing solutions that work not only for low light but also for a wide range of signal and noise levels. Using the ideas, we can solve a variety of applications in low light, such as color imaging, dynamic scene reconstruction, deblurring, and object detection.</p>

Emergent Properties of Plasmonic Systems in the Weak to Strong Coupling Regimes:Rose, Aaron Harold January 2019 (has links)

Naughton / In this dissertation I present studies of plasmonic interactions in different coupling regimes, from zero to strong coupling and approaching ultrastrong coupling. Different physics are manifest in each regime, with different possible applications. The first project uses finite element electromagnetic simulations to model plasmonic waveguides that couple near field light into the far-field for sub-diffraction limited microscopy. Wavelength/32 resolution is shown by minimizing coupling between adjacent waveguiding nanowires, with minimal attenuation over a few microns. The next two projects, by contrast, seek to maximize coupling between plasmons and excitons into the strong coupling regime where the optoelectronic properties are modified and quantum coherent phenomena may be observed. Strong exciton–plasmon coupling in MoS2 is shown experimentally at room temperature and found to be a general phenomenon in other semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides using transfer matrix modeling. A semiclassical oscillator model is fit to the experimental data to discover coherent hybridization between the ground and first excited states of MoS2. Enhanced coupling is found at the third excitonic transition, approaching the ultrastrong coupling regime where exotic properties are predicted to emerge, such as ground state virtual photons. Our strong coupling studies motivate further studies of the TMDCs as a platform for coherent quantum physics with possible applications in quantum computing and cryptography. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2019. / Submitted to: Boston College. Challenges of Experienced Nurses in a Full-Time Online RN-BS Nursing ProgramGoldammer, Diana 01 January 2014 (has links)
Practicing nurses need to be qualified at the baccalaureate level at a rate of 80% by 2020 to meet the needs of the increasingly demanding healthcare industry. Designed to meet this need, the online RN-BS (registered nurses earning a Bachelor of Science) nursing program at a local university has a declining completion rate that needs to be addressed and increased. The conceptual framework for this project was a qualitative program evaluation with a case study design; the project was designed to determine if the structure of the program was limiting student success or if factors experienced by full-time working RNs in the program were impacting success. E-mail interviews were conducted with 29 students in the online RN-BS nursing program who were selected through purposeful sampling. Research questions for this study examined the barriers faced by experienced nurses when they studied in the online RN-BS nursing program while maintaining their work schedule as RNs. Predetermined, open-ended, semistructured questions produced data that were analyzed through coding and theme identification. Themes were validated through member checking and use of an external auditor. Data revealed that students preferred the online format of the program to a face-to-face program, and they felt the local university nursing faculty was responsive and supportive. Challenges the students faced were primarily time management, cost of the program, information technology issues including learning the learning management system, group projects, and study skills. Based on the findings, an orientation program was developed that will affect social change by helping the local university nursing students complete the baccalaureate preparation they need to comply with the increasing industry demands.

Secondary English Teachers' Perceptions of Differentiated Instruction for Limited English Proficient StudentsLangley, M L 01 January 2015 (has links)
In a suburban high school, an average of 50% of limited English proficient (LEP) students did not meet the required standard on the 9th grade literature and composition end of course test (EOCT), and an average of 46% of LEP students did not meet the required standard on the American literature and composition EOCT in the years 2008-2011. LEP students were expected to meet the same standards as their native-born peers in order to pass courses and ultimately graduate. Using the professional learning community (PLC) model and the concept of differentiated instruction, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate how 7 regular education English teachers from 2 different schools described the ways they differentiated instruction for LEP students in their regular education classrooms. Data were collected by using open-ended questions, member checking, and reviewing documentary data they related to professional development on differentiation and then analyzed by transcribing and coding for emerging themes. Findings revealed that the participants wanted to have meaningful professional development where differentiated instruction is modeled for them in their content area with the time to implement and collaborate on the effectiveness of the lessons. Results of the project study will be shared at the local schools to encourage teachers to see the benefits of differentiated instruction with LEP students. This study has the potential for social change for English teachers, by revealing how to integrate differentiation, help students increase scores on required standardized tests, and thereby maximize their students' learning potential.

The Effect of Limited Moisture Supply at Various Stages of Growth on the Development and Production of Hybrid CornCampbell, Ralph E. 01 May 1954 (has links)
Corn occupies from 25 to 30 percent of the crop land harvested in the United States. In recent years the acreage devoted to corn in this country has been decidedly greater than that devoted to any other cultivated crop. In 1944 its dollar value exceeded the combined values of wheat, barley, rye, grain sorghums, and cotton.
Although South Dakota lies on the northwestern fringe of the corn belt, the corn crop is one of the most important in that state. Corn production in that area is somewhat unstable because of drought. Corn often fails to reach full maturity before the first frost in the fall. This is particularly true when frost comes unseasonably early.
An irrigation project has been proposed for the James River Basin Area of South Dakota. It is a part of the Missouri River Basin Development Project. The introduction of irrigation into this area can somewhat lessen the dangers of drought and early frost. Moisture requirements of the corn crop can be met by proper water applications. In this way the threat of crop failure as a result of drought can be reduced. The corn maturity can be hastened through correct land management and irrigation practices, thus alleviating the danger of early frost.
Very little information is available regarding the management of corn grown under irrigation in the Northern Great Plains Region. The problems associated with corn production are peculiar to that area. More complete information is needed concerning the specific needs of the corn crop in the James River Basin.
The work reported here shows some of the relationships between the development and growth of corn and soil moisture supply. The objectives of the study were twofold: to determine the periods of corn development in which abundant moisture is most critical, and to determine the effects of a limited moisture supply at various growth stages upon the development and production of hybrid corn. The results of field and greenhouse studies are reported.
