Does Listening to English Songs Motivate Students to Expand Their Extramural English? : A Case Study of Swedish Upper-Secondary School Students’ Perceptions of Possible Impact of Listening to Vocal Music on Their Extramural English

Batluk, Liilia January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether listening to music as an out-of-school activity, and English songs in particular, motivated a group of Swedish upper-secondary students to learn extramural English. One aspect that comes into focus is whether the students perceived that there were particular aspects of second language acquisition (SLA) that improved as a result of listening to music. The study focuses on the correlation between the needs of the listeners and the nature of their motivation for learning. This is a qualitative study based on the analysis of semi-structured interviews. The results show that all of the students perceived listening to music as an aid in their extramural English acquisition. A majority of the students had the intrinsic motivation for learning as they exhibited curiosity, emotions and internal needs as the primary factors that empowered them to expand their extramural English. The minority of the interviewees showed signs of extrinsic motivation to learn the vocabulary of the lyrics of the songs they listened to. The learning they experienced was linked to the expectancy in improving their academic performances. They may, however, have had a combination of the extrinsic and intrinsic forms of motivation where the former had a dominant position. In both cases the respondents showed awareness of the correlation between their extramural English acquisition and listening to vocal music. It is suggested that vocabulary acquisition was the primary aspect of language learning that benefited from listening to songs, followed by listening skills. The possibility to make their own choice to listen to music is linked to deep language learning, vocabulary learning in context and mastering listening skills.

Skillnader i musiklyssnande : Fokus i musiklyssnande bland professionella och icke professionella / Differences within listening to music : A focus in music listening among professionals and non-professionals

Löfgren, Sandra January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to find out how professionals and non-professionals listen to music. Are there any differences in focus or is it possible to discern any characteristic tendencies? In order to find out, a selected group of people have listen to various types of music and then asked to write down what they heard in the music, their “soundscape”. Afterwards these narratives have been analyzed in a classification system - prepared by Gabrielsson (2008), in form of numerous themes and categories, who’s aim is to elucidate different musical experiences. The varying result that has arrived in my study has been sorted in, under this schedule's different themes and categories and then been put together in tabular, in order to give an easier overview. Even though, to my knowledge, it doesn’t exist a former study like this between the listening habits among professionals and non-professionals, it emphasize more common research about the relations between experiences and reactions in listening to music, as it shows that focus is directed towards rather similar categories. The discussion that is taking place within music psychology and social music psychology, that hearing/listening to music is socially and culturally habituated seems to be strengthened in this study.   This study won’t present and generalize any easy answers about how we hear and listen to music but rather emphasize that listening to music is a complex process with many different aspects and variables to consider.

Implementering van die Transvaalse onderwysdepartement se senior primêre klasmusieksillabus vanaf 1978 tot 1992 / The implementation of the Transvaal education department's senior primary class music syllabus from 1978 to 1992

Kok, Cornelia 11 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Summaries in Afrikaans and English / The supposition exists that the Transvaal Education Department's Senior Primary Class Music syllabus is not being implemented in all aspects and that this is connected to teacher training. An empirical investigation was launched using three questionnaires and a classroom field study. Two questionnaires, completed by Class Music teachers, were used to assess to what extent the school syllabus was being followed. Teachers also had to provide information about their training in Class Music teaching. The third questionnaire offered a structured interview with school principals. The actualisation of Class Music, extra curricular music activities, the role of the teacher and teacher training were examined. Lessons for standard two pupils at twenty schools, were presented for an in-depth investigation. The results were tabulated, summarised in bar graphs and interpretations rendered. According to the findings, recommendations with regard to curriculum, the implementation of the syllabus, and tertiary Class Music training were made. In 'n diepte-ondersoek is lesse by twintig skole vir standerdtweeleerlinge aangebied. / Art History, Visual Arts & Musicology / M.Mus

Hudba v českém vězeňství / Music in Czech Prison System

Poskočilová, Lucie January 2018 (has links)
"Music in Czech Prison System" is an ethnomusicological study of the functioning of music in prison. The work focuses on the role of music in the everyday life of inmates and during the educational activities. It deals with the relationship of prisoners to music, musical activities in prison, and the approach of Czech Prison Service to musical activities. The aim of this master thesis is to present an image of the state of music and musical activities in the Czech prison system and to map out the forms in which the prison music appears, and to show what functions it has based on testimonies of convicts and prison staff. In prison, the environment of a so called total institution, people find themselves in extreme conditions that affect the wide range of their experiences. While imprisoned an inmate is faced with many changes that negatively affect the quality of his life. Research shows that music is a very important element for some prisoners, which can greatly influence their behavior and experience in prison and can compensate for their negative constraints. This master thesis attempts to capture whether and how convict's perceptions of music is different in an isolated environment as opposed to experiencing it outside the prison. What role does music play in the prison situation? And in what...
