Ruling PowersHanson, Scot A. 09 July 2003 (has links)
While the fantasy genre is one of the most widely read modes of writing, literary criticism and academic discussion of the genre takes place at a much lower level. This imbalance has developed in part because of a misconception that fantasy genre writings cannot accomplish significant, literary purposes. This thesis first offers an argument for why the fantasy genre should receive more attention in scholarly circles, then presents an excerpt of a fantasy novel. The argument draws from the limited amount of existing criticism to highlight the strengths of the fantasy genre, building a case that, in most respects, works of heroic fantasy deserve thoughtful critical attention, and concluding with a proposal that further attention will elevate the acknowledged weaknesses. The excerpt from the novel is not intended as an exemplary model of what fantasy can accomplish; it is merely a first step on the long journey to those goals.

Skav / FrictionSvensson, Anni January 2021 (has links)

Mvh

Anni Svensson

Skamologi / ShamologyLarsson, Liv January 2021 (has links)

The narrative thematics of the late style of Henry James : incorporating an analysis of The wings of the dovePappas, Paul Alexander January 1989 (has links)
Bibliography: pages 74-77. / This paper represents a study of contemporary narrative theory in relation to the late style of Henry James. Using the work of various narrative theorists it examines the concepts of the Narrator, Speech Representation, Focalization and Figural Narration. This is the main emphasis of part I. The work of the different theorists is examined selectively in order to give a concise but comprehensive summary of the chosen narrative concepts. Part II of the dissertation deals with the relationship of Henry James to the ideology of modernism. The modernist notions of 'showing' and 'telling' are discussed in relation to the narrative theory of part I. This section also deals with James's notions of dramatization, foreshortening and impersonal narration. The narrative style of Henry James's later novels is discussed in relation to the concepts of narrative theory examined in part I. Furthermore, part II examines the difficulties James faced m constructing his narratives and how they are manifested as discrepancies in his novelistic project. The specific facets discussed are those of the effacement of the authorial narrator and the representation of consciousness; this discussion also deals with James's approach to these facets of narrative representation. Part III consists of an examination of selected 'Prefaces' to James's novels, and discusses these as a reflection of James's ideas of narrative. It combines parts 1 and II in a discussion of James's notions of narrative, and utilizes the contemporary narrative theory to order to illuminate some of these notions. In order to show how James utilized certain narrative techniques an analysis of extracts from The Wings of the Dove is undertaken. This section examines James's use of the Narrator, Speech Representation, Focalization and Figural Narration. Part III also deals with the extent to which James succeeds in his project and furthermore, shows that certain narrative devices James employed contradict his notions of dramatization and objectivity.

Guy Butler and South African cultureWilliams, Elaine January 1989 (has links)
This paper looks at Guy Butler's theories about English South Africans and the English language. I have outlined his reputation as a critical thinker, poet and scholar, with a view to understanding the role he has played as an individual in South African cultural politics. I have also tried to trace some of the social roots and implications of the ideas he puts forward and the social purposes these serve. These have been investigated from a 'political' and sociological perspective. I have concentrated on his socio-political discourses as they have appeared in conference papers, journal articles and newspaper articles and the media response to the ideas has also been analysed. Butler's poetry and more properly literary work is not a direct concern of this paper and is not given extensive attention. I have concluded that Butler's work is an interpretation of South African reality which serves the purpose of promoting a set of mythical goals and purposes for English South Africans based on the founding myth of the 1820 settlers in the Eastern Cape.

The input of choral music in linguistic and literary aspectsMogola, Motshakane Phillip January 2009 (has links)
Submitted to the Faculty of Arts in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of
MASTER OF ARTS in the Department of African Languages at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2009. / The main concern of this dissertation is an attempt to bring forward the contributions Choral Music has and is still playing in the promotion of Language and Literary aspects.
The study commences by laying out the challenges this art form (choral music) is facing, namely that its composers are not taken seriously and are not fully recognised in promoting the economy of the country and the well being of all, through the message it passes on in a form of entertainment.
This study further attempts to describe the historical background of choral music by giving its definition, goals, essential elements of music, notation and form including musical instruments that are used in African and Western cultures.
The study continues explaining how the different individuals participate either in listening and/or creating music in order to understand the emotional content of the piece, pathos, love, anger - as well as the story itself which is communicated through words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole.
Last but not least, the study rounds up by showing how the linguistic aspect of music is conducted either in a Western or African route by learners in Mpumalanga Province in order to promote social, political and cultural tolerance.
The study finally closes by recommending on how the literal aspects of introducing music in Mpumalanga Schools could be introduced. This includes proposed resources in curriculum such as buildings and the type of personnel that could be identified and be supported in order to introduce music as an examination subject in schools.

Discussion as Exploration and its Effects in an Elementary Reading ClassCena, Michael E. 01 May 1995 (has links)
Discussion as exploration has been proposed as an instructional paradigm for use in high-school literature instruction. Its proponents have explained that using it fosters an aesthetic literary environment. For the purpose of study, the paradigm was modified for use in an elementary fifth-grade reading class. A month-long investigation was conducted to explore the effects of using the paradigm, concerns an elementary teacher had as she implemented it, and its effects on participating students' literary stances. Research methodology included participant-observation, surveys, and a single-subject phase withdrawal component. Results of the study confirmed that (a) students were capable of using discussion as exploration, (b) using the paradigm led to movement among students' literary stances, and (c) discussion as exploration engaged groups of students in literature reflection.

Birth and rebirth as a cultural symbolFoss, Roberta 01 June 1967 (has links)
The corpus of this thesis study consists of a group of monoprints and paintings as well as a written commentary intended as their accompaniment. The investigation of such a topic as Birth and Rebirth has involved a concern with the existence of symbology meaningful to the topic. The term culture can be clarified to mean both the artist in particular as well as culture in a collective sense. The possibilities of the topic semantically would involve an essayist’s approach. This thesis is not a pictorial essay. Birth and Rebirth as terms evoke images which a painter can simply treat as subject matter. It has not been my intention to deal with existing images in a way which would succeed in documenting them in paint. However, for the purposes of the thesis problem, it is absolutely necessary to investigate in terms other than visual. The subject which insistently recurred in my painting, and once perceived there, in my thought, was the archaic cradle of man, the cave. Within this setting the ritual - and the role of the Shaman -suggested the power of the initial confrontation of object by man. The force of this impact is not diminished for the viewer today. The visual impact of the ancient tool or weapon can elicit a strong response from the contemporary viewer, but in ways removed in time from the ancient context. A study of such relics thus resulted in a conception of a primordial frame of reference which enables me to participate as a painter in the origins of our culture. The thesis will investigate the specific imageries of Birth and Rebirth in relation to the heritage and accretions of a culture in relation to the way these cultural symbols are now relative to the needs of this painter and utilized by her. During the activity of painting my state will often parallel that of the child scrutinizing a stick or a stone, experiencing their qualities directly. As an adult, finally I am more aware of the effects of the mediating screen of verbiage. If I can experience painting with the impact of this child, my ability to express in paint will rival the impact made by the timeless artifact. In investigating the relation of symbology to the subject matter the degree to which representationalism was negated in favor of relative abstraction was also important. Subject matter, that is, that which has pretentions toward being highly representational, involves a commitment to correspondence with the phenomenalogical world. As such it has trappings which interfere with its apprehension on abstract terms, a condition necessary to the positing of a freshly meaningful symbol. The ideal freedom which is possible for the relatively abstract painting lies in the multiplicity of meaning thereby possible for the artist and viewer. It is too easy to view the world as an accretion of matter; and think of painting as its imitation in pigment. Therefore a movement toward abstraction is deemed necessary and forms come to symbolize a simple organic state akin to “stick”. Composition was simplified to permit this greater range of interpretation – the spatial content being the inorganic world ground of “stone”. This intention toward abstraction further reinforces the larger context of the primordial and the necessity of a direct apprehension of the artist’s interaction with her painting elements as if to the direct qualities of the proverbial stick and stone.
