This dissertation, following the methodology of reading and analyzing texts, initially invites the reader to retrace the route of the notion of philia/amicitia in the Greco-Roman world in which its foundations were laid and discussed in memorable pages ranging from the fragments of Empedocles of Agrigentum, through the platonic dialogues as Lysis, the Symposium and Phaedrus, the books VIII and IX of the Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle, Epicurus the letters and dialogue On friendship of Cicero, the last one latter in Republican Rome. However, the pages especially dedicated this monograph are directed to reflection that Seneca, in imperial Rome, gives the friendship in some of the Moral letters to Lucilius, enjoying the philosophical idleness that the adverse political situation in neroniano principality has imposed. Through letters, simple and straightforward textual form to send teaching the young Lucilio, and why not tell us, Seneca rethinks human relationships beyond the usual forms of patronage and clientelism so present in the life of patricians and plebeians of their time and proposes a higher sense of friendship, in the sense that this is reciprocal, caring and unselfish, fundamental component of the happy life and essential part of his practical philosophy. The following results were obtained: the realization that Seneca did not understand Epicurus in relation to friendship, that your way of thinking the Sage is more human than occurred before it, because it presents a sage who feel like having friends and takes pleasure in have friends and your choice in dealing with friendship through letters is made to think that this is the best way to address them.

This dissertation aimed at ascertaining which aspects found during the republican time period in Rome - for instance glory, freedom, fame, among others - are evident within Sêneca's work (4 BC - 65 AD). It was observed that the way this philosopher goes about building these notions is different from that of Cícero (106 - 43 a.C). One may firmly state that Sêneca "interiorizes" concepts that had been, prior to the Empire, restricted to social and political contexts. To Stoicism, the most important thing is the moral life of human beings, and it is within this field of action that Sêneca's writings are developed. This investigation intends to show the way Sêneca deals with these Roman concepts by showing, in an original way, the equivalent Greek notions. In his work, notably in Epistulae morales ad Lucilium and in some Dialoghi - such as De breuitate uitae and De tranquillitate animi - the philosopher makes use of linguistic instruments such as lexical and morphosyntactic ones (the latter being used more frequently) to refer to interiority. Within Sêneca's work, the process of interiorization involves not only linguistic but also imagery resources. Our goal, in the present study, sought to expose these resources as they emerged along with the concepts we work with / Doutorado / Linguistica / Doutor em Linguística

Speech Disorders. The Speaking Subject and Language in Neronian Court Literature

Rudoni, Elia January 2020 (has links)
By combining literary criticism, philology, and contemporary psychoanalysis, this dissertation offers an innovative interpretation of Neronian court literature (Seneca, Lucan, and Petronius). I argue that the works of these three authors thematize and embody a problematic relation between the human subject and language. Language is not conceived or represented as an inert tool that can be easily appropriated by the speaking subject, but rather as a powerful entity that may, and often does, take control of the human subject, directing it from without. Besides analyzing how Seneca, Lucan, and Petronius portray the relation between the human subject and language in the internal plots and characters of their works, I also explore the relation between these three authors themselves and language. My conclusion is that this relation is defined by unresolved ambiguities and neurotic tensions, and I suggest that this might be a consequence of the traumatizing circumstances that the three examined authors endured at Nero’s court.

Dresd.Dc.152)

Dassi, Umberto 02 July 2020 (has links)

CINCINNATO E LA GENS QUINZIA: GENESI DI UN PARADIGMA / Cincinnatus and the gens Quinctia: genesis of a paradigm

MAZZOTTA, MARIA CHIARA 04 April 2016 (has links)
The research aims to study the figure of Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a paradigmatic vir Romanus of the early roman Republic, and his belonging clan, the gens Quinctia, throughout its existence. Aim of the work is to decode how it was built over time by the roman culture, the exemplary figure of Cincinnatus, highlighting any historical aspects of his story and the subsequent historiographical and "ideological" layers that have made it a paradigmatic character of the roman history.

The reception of the Categories of Aristotle, c. 80 BC to AD 220

Griffin, Michael J. January 2009 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the ancient reception of the Categories of Aristotle, a work which served continuously, from late antiquity into the early modern period (Frede 1987), as the student’s introduction to philosophy.  There had previously been no comprehensive study of the reception of the Categories during the age of the first philosophical commentaries (c. 80 BC to AD 220). In this study, I have collected, assigned, and analyzed the relevant fragments of commentary belonging to this period, including some that were previously undocumented or inexplicit in the source texts, and sought to establish and characterize the influence of the early commentators’ activity on the subsequent Peripatetic tradition. In particular, I trace the early evolution of criticism and defense of the text through competing accounts of its aim (skopos), which would ultimately lead Stoic and Platonic philosophers to a partial acceptance of the Categories and frame its role in the later Neo-Platonic curriculum.

Harvey-Lavoie, Simonne 06 1900 (has links)
Flow is an important determinant of physicochemical characteristics of rivers. Fish communities in rivers are strongly dependant of their habitat, which is directly dictated by this set of characteristics. The loss of the natural flow regime, through regulation by hydroelectric facilities, for example, has the potential to directly affect the fish communities. Numerous studies have shown that the loss of natural flow regimes negatively impact fish populations and communities, but not much is known about the mechanisms that underlie such a relationship. Physiological processes determine the way that fish select their habitat. The stress response has been proposed as a mechanism that guides fish throughout the environmental changes happening in their habitat. Indicators of the fish stress response comprise behaviour, plasma cortisol, and blood glucose and lactate. First, northern pike Esox lucius L. movements were assessed in two rivers with contrasting flow regimes: a hydropeaking regulated river and an unregulated free-flowing river. Using manual tracking by radio-telemetry, we found that pike moved at a higher rate in the regulated river than in the unregulated river. Results also show that the direction of the relationship between movement of pike and flow can vary between rivers. Second, the effect of a water velocity increase on plasma cortisol, blood glucose and blood lactate levels in wild pike originating from the two rivers with contrasting flow regimes were assessed. Our results show that blood glucose and lactate concentrations are significantly diminished for fish originating from the regulated river, in comparison to fish originating from the unregulated river, following an increase in water velocity. Third, a novel analytical framework was developed that allow one to quantify the effect of the flow on fish selection of the physical conditions of their habitat (e.g. water velocity). Results obtained in the previous chapters suggest that pike living in the regulated river might be subjected to higher water velocities than fish living in the unregulated river. This novel tool will allow us to validate this hypothesis. Lastly, basal and maximum acute stress-induced concentrations in plasma cortisol, and blood glucose and lactate were quantified in pike living in both the regulated and the unregulated rivers. These physiological parameters can give an indication of the fish habitat quality. Our results suggest that fish from the regulated river are able to modulate their plasma cortisol to dampen their HPI-axis responsiveness and avoid chronic stress. This thesis assesses the effects of flow fluctuations on fish using novel approaches, situated at the intersection between the fields of physiology and ecology. It significantly contributes to broaden our knowledge of the mechanisms underlying fish habitat selection in rivers.
