從十九世紀中葉到二十世紀晚期，歐亞混血兒在香港的社會地位有很大的變化，從被人輕視到受到尊重，道路是漫長的。本文的研究對象羅何錦姿是這個年代成長的女性。身處在一個中西文化兼備的環境，作為一個歐亞混血女性，她的際遇會否與純中國血統的女子不同？ / 本文以何錦姿的家世--祖父母何仕文〈C. H. M. Bosman〉 和施氏，父親何東和母親張蓮覺在港發展經歷，到她成長、受父母培育、作父母的秘書和管家- 作為研究的起點；進而分析何錦姿與羅文錦的婚姻生活，如何與夫家成員相處及教導子女，深入了解香港歐亞混血兒的文化取向。 / 何錦姿繼承母親張蓮覺的遺志，用現代的管理方法發展寶覺學校，將香港女子教育的規模不斷擴充，從原先只設小學，到二十世紀五十年代開辦中學，再從職業中學發展為文法中學，可說是時代的先鋒，何錦姿治校的理念及方法是本文研究的另一重點。 / 何錦姿是本港首位女太平紳士。曾任各非牟利慈善機構如同仁會(Welfare League) 、保良局、拔萃女校、何東中學、中國婦女會顧問，她和上流社會的知名人士，如鄧肇堅、李兆基等的人脈關係對她的事業發展又有何影響，都是本文要探討的問題。 / From the mid-nineteenth century to the late twentieth century, there was an enormous change in the social status of Eurasians in Hong Kong from being slighted to gaining respect. The road was long and winding. The subject of this research, Lady Victoria Jubilee LO, was a woman born and raised in such an era. Did she, being a Eurasian living in a Chinese-cum-western environment, lead a life different from a woman of pure Chinese descent? / The thesis starts with a study of the family background of Victoria Jubilee LO, which includes: how her grandparents C. H. M. BOSMAN and Ms. SZE as well as her parents, Sir Robert HOTUNG and Ms. Clara CHEUNG, established themselves in Hong Kong; her upbringing; the education she received from her parents; and how she became the secretary and housekeeper to her parents. Furthermore, analyses are made of her married life with her husband, Sir M. K. LO; how she got along with members of her husband's family; and the way she taught her offspring. Through these analyses, a deeper understanding of the cultural orientations of Eurasians in Hong Kong can be obtained. / Inheriting the avowed dedication of her late mother, Ms. Clara CHEUNG, Victoria Jubilee LO employed the skills of modern management in running Po Kok School and continuously expanded its scale -- from a primary school to a secondary school in the mid-twentieth century, then to vocational school and ultimately to a grammar school. She can be regarded as a pioneer of her time. The rationale and methods behind the school management skills adopted by Victoria Jubilee is another focus of this thesis. / Victoria Jubilee LO was the first lady Justice of the Peace in Hong Kong. She has given her services to non-profit charitable organizations such as the Welfare League, Po Leung Kuk, trustee committees of Diocesan Girls' School and Ho Tung Secondary School, and also served as an honorary advisor to the Hong Kong Chinese Women Club. What influence did her connections with high society personalities such as Sir S. K. TANG and Mr. LEE Shau Kee have on the development of her career? Electrical propagation in excitable tissue, such as nerve fibers and heart muscle, is described by a nonlinear diffusion-reaction parabolic partial differential equation for the transmembrane voltage $V(x,t)$, known as the cable equation. This equation involves a highly nonlinear source term, representing the total ionic current across the membrane, governed by a Hodgkin-Huxley type ionic model, and requires the solution of a system of ordinary differential equations. Thus, the model consists of a PDE (in 1-, 2- or 3-dimensions) coupled to a system of ODEs, and it is very expensive to solve, especially in 2 and 3 dimensions. In order to solve this equation numerically, we develop an algorithm, extended from the Parareal Algorithm, to efficiently incorporate space-parallelized solvers into the framework of the Parareal algorithm, to achieve time-and-space parallelization. Numerical results and comparison of the performance of several serial, space-parallelized and time-and-space-parallelized time-stepping numerical schemes in one-dimension and in two-dimensions are also presented.

Η παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία πραγματεύεται την μελέτη, προσομοίωση και κατασκευή διάταξης διασύνδεσης φωτοβολταϊκών συστημάτων δύο βαθμίδων με το δίκτυο της χαμηλής τάσης. Αντικείμενο της εργασίας ήταν η πρώτη βαθμίδα που αναλαμβάνει την ανύψωσης της τάσης, που δίνει στην έξοδο ένα φωτοβολταϊκό πλαίσιο, με σκοπό να συνδεθεί στην επόμενη βαθμίδα, όπου γίνεται η αντιστροφή της τάσης. Το κύκλωμα που μελετήθηκε είναι ένας μετατροπέας ανύψωσης και σταθεροποίησης της τάσης εξόδου και επιλέχθηκε από τη σειρά των μετατροπέων Luo. Συγκεκριμένα έπειτα από μελέτη των τοπολογιών και με βάση τις προδιαγραφές που είχαμε στη παρούσα εργασία έγινε η επιλογή δύο διατάξεων ως οι πιο κατάλληλες για την εφαρμογή. Η διάταξη Re-lift ανύψωσης τάσης και το στοιχειώδες κύκλωμα Υπέρ-Ανύψωσης Τάσης μελετήθηκαν θεωρητικά και έγινε προσομοίωση της λειτουργίας τους με πραγματικά στοιχεία. Με βάση τα αποτελέσματα που λήφθηκαν έγινε σύγκριση των δύο μετατροπέων και επιλέχθηκε η μία εκ των δύο για κατασκευή. Τελικά στο εργαστήριο κατασκευάστηκε το στοιχειώδες κύκλωμα Υπέρ-Ανύψωσης Τάσης και ο έλεγχος της διάταξης έγινε με τη χρήση μικροελεγκτή (dsPIC30F4011). Τα πειραματικά αποτελέσματα επιβεβαίωσαν την θεωρητική ανάλυση που έγινε και την ορθή λειτουργία του κυκλώματος. Ο βαθμός απόδοσης που προέκυψε στις πειραματικές μετρήσεις θεωρείται μάλλον χαμηλός της τάξης του 80% για την εφαρμογή αυτή, καθώς αποτελεί την πρώτη βαθμίδα σε σύστημα δύο βαθμίδων. Η συμπεριφορά όμως και το κέρδος τάσης είναι ικανοποιητικά για εφαρμογές χαμηλής ισχύος. / The present diplomatic work deals with the study, simulation and manufacture of a device for the connection of photovoltaic systems of two stages with the network of low voltage. Object of the work was the first stage that undertakes the elevation of voltage; we receive at the output of a photovoltaic panel, so as to connect it with the next stage, where the voltage is inverted. The circuit that was studied is a converter of elevation and stabilisation of the output voltage was selected from the Luo converters. In particular, after studying the topologies and taking into account the specifications that we had in the present work, two topologies were chosen as the most suitable for the application. The Re-lift converter and the elementary circuit of the superlift converters were studied theoretically and their operation was simulated with real elements. Based on the results that were taken, the two converters were compared and was selected which one of the two to manufacture. Finally the superlift elementary circuit was manufactured in the laboratory and the control of the circuit was done with the use of a microcontroller (dsPIC30F4011). The experimental results confirmed the theoretical analysis and the correct operation of the circuit. The degree of efficiency that resulted in the experimental measurements is considered rather low in the order of 80% for this application, while it constitutes the first stage in a system of two stages. The behaviour however and the voltage transfer gain are satisfactorily for applications of low power

The developemnt of fisheries in Lake Victoria is faced with a myriad challenges including overfishing, environmental destruction, disappearance of certain indigenous species and pollution. All these problems can be located within the social, economic and political systems that exists today and in the past. This thesis, ‘Fishers and Fish Traders of Lake Victoria : Colonial Policy and the Development of Fish Production in Kenya, 1880-1978’, argues that the Luo fishers had their own indigenous techniques of fishing, modes of preservation and systems of management that ensured sustainable utilisation of fisheries. The thesis examines the role of the Luo fishers in the sustainable usage of the Lake Victoria fisheries. The British colonial settlers came up with new policies of plantation and commercial farming, taxation and forced labour, all of which encouraged the Luo fishers to partially break with their pre-colonial systems and create new ways of responding to the demands of the colonial state. The study argues that the coming of colonialism and its attendant capitalism introduced new fishing gear as well as new species, such as mbuta, that were inimical to the sustainable utilisation of the Lake Victoria fisheries. The colonial regime also introduced new practices of fisheries management such as scouts, licensing, closed seasons and the numbering of boats, practices geared towards ensuring the commercial production and development of the fisheries. This commercialisation led to cut-throat competition between Asian, European and African fish traders. The coming of independence in 1963 brought some changes, such as the provision of credit facilities, new technology, and attempts by the new African government to more effectively control and manage the fisheries. However, not much changed in terms of policy objectives, and most of the colonial policies remained unchanged. New industries were established around the fisheries, but most remained in the hands of Asians and a few African middlemen. The small-scale fishers continued to struggle against the commercialisation of fishery production, remaining voiceless and marginalised. The study recommends an all inclusive participatory approach to solve the problems currently affecting the Lake Victoria fisheries. / History / DLITT (History)

The topic of semestral thesis is methods to detect selection in DNA sequences. In the begining of the thesis we will describe molecular evolution. It will be written what made the evolution and how the evolution is shown. Moreover there are gen mutations and mechanisms of diffuse and fixation. It will be defined what pozitive, negative and neutral selection is. The thesis is focused on evolution distance of synonymous and nonsynonymous substitution. There will be described three methods – Nei-Gojobori, Li-Wu-Luo and Comeron. All these methods will be described with mathematic formulas. There will be statistic test to decide what kind of selection ti is – there will be used z-test. In the practical part, there will be information about developed software what counts selection pressure from sequences from databazes in format GenBank and it shows parts where selection is. The software will be used for two data sets with two different genetic codes. The result will be discussed. We will discuss results of all three methods of selection pressure and influence of input parametrs.
