A missiological evaluation of Christian responses to reincarnationVan Zyl, Mathew Paul 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation is a missiological evaluation of the challenges presented to
Christian faith by reincarnation. Owing to the far-reaching theological
implications of reincarnation, I have made use of an analytical grid to structure
the research. It consists of seven sections, namely God, anthropology, ethics,
hamartiology, soteriology, theodicy and history. This grid has been used to
examine reincarnation as espoused in the Bhagavad-Gita (chapter 2) , as
propounded by the well-known Hindu Swamis Vivekananda and Prabhupada
(chapter 3) , and in the responses of four Christian theologians (Geddes
MacGregor, John Hick, Vishal Mangalwadi and Edmond Robillard) to
reincarnation (chapter 4) . There are many individuals within Western society
who are attracted to reincarnation. My concern is to evaluate whether the
Christian church can incorporate reincarnation in its religious worldview. In
chapter 5, I give an evaluation of this question from a Reformed theological
perspective.
reinkarnasie (hoofstuk 4). Daar is heelwat mense in die Westerse samelewing
wat aangetrokke is tot reinkarnasie. My vraagstelling is om te evalueer of die
Christelike kerk re'inkarnasie in sy godsdienstige wereldbeeld kan opneem. In
hoqfstuk 5, gee ek 'n beoordeling van hierdie vraag uit 'n Gereformeerde
teologiese gesigspunt. / Christian,Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.Th. (Missiology)

Det alla vet men ingen ser : Hur kan teori formuleras för att synliggöra kopplingen mellan unga kvinnors psykiska ohälsa och fotografiskt material på Instagram?Björndotter, Annika January 2022 (has links)
The thesis analyzes how a theoretical framework and method can be formulated to make mental illness visible in photographs posted on social media. The aim is to create a basis for further research. The framework is built on time, conversation, and language. Based on Susan Sontag, Roland Barthes and W J T Mitchells thoughts, a timeline is drawn. On it, both emotions and bodies are constantly present. Jon Kabat-Zinns mindfulness method is used to give an insight into how emotions can be handled with inspiration from eastern meditation techniques. The typical “yoga image” is analyzed. It is characterized by a woman doing a yoga pose, often placed in the middle of the image surface in an exotic place. The body ideal is recognized from other fitness contexts. The material is from @kinoyoga which is run by the yoga profile Kino MacGregor. Examining photographs that communicate perfect health puts this thesis questions at the forefront. The study shows that photographs on social media are not static objects but are parts in an ongoing documentation where meaning is not given. Instead meaning keeps transforming and is contently renegotiated. When the boundaries between the physical and digital realities are blurred, it becomes difficult to distinguish the needs of the image from one’s own. The emotional experiences of shortcomings and desires can occur and start to interact. As Instagram's algorithms exploit these emotions, it becomes difficult to break the vicious circle. Instagram users are forced to abide by the app's rules. The responsibility for the ill health generated should be the owners of for-profit companies and political institutions with the power to legislate.

Shedding light on a muddled field : a Christian ethical appraisal of transforming and transformational leadershipMeier, Elke Annette 02 1900 (has links)
Principles of “transforming leadership” have been widely promoted
since the publication of James McGregor Burns’ book Leadership,
especially among Christian leaders. The purpose of this study is to
examine the ethical foundations of his model and Bernard Bass’
“transformational leadership”. Imprecise use of the terms
“transforming”, “charismatic”, and “transformational” leads to an
adoption of methods without adequate understanding of the
underlying value system. This literature review compares and
evaluates the source texts within a framework of world view,
intention, character and menschenbild, as well as the Christian
ethical mandates of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Valuing the imago Dei in
others has significant implications for a leader-follower
relationship. Bonhoeffer’s mandates will help leaders reflect their
position within their organisations and the wider society. Though
the incentive for this research was leadership within the context of
the Wycliffe Global Alliance, its findings will be relevant to Christian
leadership in general, especially in intercultural contexts. / Philosophy & Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Theological Ethics with specialisation in Christian leadership in context)

Relationships of Reform: Frances MacGregor Ingram, Immigrants, and Progressivism in Louisville, Kentucky, 1900-1940Laura Eileen Criss Bergstrom (13144761) 24 July 2022 (has links)

This dissertation focuses on the life of Frances MacGregor Ingram, a progressive reformer in Louisville, Kentucky. It follows Ingram’s career in social work at the Neighborhood House settlement and the Progressive reform movements in which she held leadership positions from 1905 to 1939. This project concentrates on Ingram’s involvement in reform movements pertaining to tenement housing, garbage collection management, dance hall regulation, juvenile delinquency, mental hygiene institutions, probation, wholesome recreation, child welfare, child labor, women’s working conditions, unemployment, and Great Depression relief.

Most Progressive Era scholarship concentrates on northern cities and reformers, such as Jane Addams at Hull House. But much of the literature overlooks southern contributions to the settlement house movement and progressive reform as a whole. This dissertation serves three purposes. First it helps fill the gap in scholarship on southern progressivism. Reformers in the urban South were not limited to charity work and prohibition. They engaged in complex and dynamic social reforms. Incredibly diverse in scope, Kentucky’s reform history should be understood in the context of southern society and politics, which impacted which progressive reforms were successful and which were not.

Second, it builds on other women’s reform scholars by expanding previous conceptions of the Progressive Era to include the 1930s. By doing so, it provides a better understanding of women’s reform activism. Third, this dissertation provides a more balanced approach by emphasizing the alliances Ingram formed with immigrant communities. With a few exceptions, settlement literature primarily focuses on the movement leaders. Unlike some settlements, Neighborhood House Americanization programs via clubs, recreation, and citizenship classes were negotiated between the settlement and its neighbors. Through the lens of Ingram’s urban reform experience in Kentucky, this dissertation uses gender, class, race, ethnicity, and region to unpack the complicated relationships between reformers like Ingram, working-class immigrants, and male political officials.
