Previous issue date: 2013-02-15 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The magneto-optical traps cool and trap atoms in a given region, forming clouds of cold atoms. As the setting of the trap, clouds can be obtained in different geometries such as
spherical or ring-shaped. Traps have a wide range of applications, such as building atomic clocks, to obtain the Bose-Einstein condensate and the study of collisions, wherein the ring geometry is interesting to study in low dimensions. The learning of the trap parameters implies in its characterization and thus the appropriate parameters allow to optimize the trap and improve the performance of it s. The objective of our work is to study the behavior of the motion of atoms and the forces that act upon them by varying some
parameters of the trap, such as the magnetic field gradient, the detuning between the laser frequency and the atomic transition, the intensity of the laser beams and also the
intensity beams profile of the beams. By using the integration method of Runge-Kutta, we present simulations of the trajectory of a trapped atom and the radius of the orbit
varying the same parameters of the trap mentioned above. One can find in literature a description of the force exertd on the trapped atoms with Gaussian profile laser beams in the traditional configuration and also with a small misalignment. From the deduction of the force on the trapped atoms with laser beams of Gaussian profile, we present some
considerations to find the force acting on the atoms with Gaussian beam profile and simulations in this new configuration. Thus, the possibility of trapping atoms with other intensity beam profiles can be tested.

To support nanosciences evolution, there is a strong demand for developing new instrumentation devoted to nano-scale characterization. In this context, the development of the Scanning Near-field Optical Microscope (SNOM) took place. In contrast to traditional optical microscopes, SNOM deals with evanescent electromagnetic radiation and, consequently, the resolution is no longer limited by the Rayleigh criterion. At Laboratório de Materiais Magnéticos (LMM) IFUSP a SNOM devoted to magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements (MO-SNOM) has been developed. The MOSNOM associates the high resolution of the near-field technique to the high sensibility of the magneto-optical Kerr effect. Near-field magneto-optical microscopy is not yet wellestablished and there is a lack of systematic results in the literature. Using the MO-SNOM, amorphous Co70.4Fe4.6Si15B10 particles with 16x16x0.08 microm3 and 4x4x0.08 microm3 dimensions were studied. With resolution better than 200 nm, several magneto-optical differential susceptibility images and local hysteresis loops were obtained. The systematic results uphold the establishment of this new technique. Under the different applied field conditions, the magnetic behavior of the particles was found to be determined by shape anisotropy. Local hysteresis loops presented shapes intrinsic of local field induced process. The unusual hystesesis loops motivated interesting discussion about the conventional magnetic parameters. The MO-SNOM measurements indicate that the near-field transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect is similar to the far-field case. The results are highly supported by far-field magneto-optical microscopy, micromagnetic simulations and magnetic force microscopy measurements. Complementary measurements indicate the MO-SNOM potential to extensive magnetic surface characterization related to pinning potential distribution. Furthermore, measurements on the exchange-bias coupled NiFe/FeMn thin films make evident the MO-SNOM high sensitivity, estimated to be DeltaM ~ 2 x 10-12 emu.

O operador de Wigner aplicado a colisões de mudança de estrutura fina entre átomos alcalinos no regime frio / The Wigner operator applied to fine-structure collisions between alkaline cold atomsHelena Carolina Braga 22 March 2002 (has links)
In this work we study the collision loss processes caused by fine-structure change and radiative escape. These processes are important because they limit the density and the confinement time of atoms in magneto-optical traps. The use of the Wigner-function formalism allows us to treat the internal degrees of freedom purely quantum mechanically, while treating the dynamics of the external degrees of freedom quasi-classically. This dissertation employs this formalism to derive for the first time, quasi-classical equations describing one-dimensional cold collisions, including dissipation due to spontaneous emission, and an algorithm, also for the first time, to solve numerically the mentioned set of coupled equations.

Efeito Kerr magneto-óptico espectral e sperimagnetismo de filmes amorfos de terra rara-Co / Spectral magneto-optical Kerr effect and magnetism-speri of the films of amorphous rare earth-CoAdriana Pedrosa Biscaia Tufaile 28 May 2001 (has links)
We have observed the spectral behavior of the transverse magnetooptical Kerr effect (TMOKE) in thin films of rare earth - cobalt amorphous alloys for the visible and the near-ultraviolet ranges of spectrurn (wavelength fiom 325 nm up to 670 nm). The relative change of reflectivity has shown a maximum at the blue wavelength. We have concluded that this magneto-optical signal is proportional to the cobalt magnetization and the proportionality constant depends on the alloy composition and on the wavelength. Besides developing an apparatus and a new phase modulation technique for the TMOKE, we have compared it to the more usual amplitude modulation TMOKE technique. This apparatus operates using either a He-Cd laser ( = 325 nm and 442 nm) for a red diode laser ( = 670nm). We have proposed the figure of merit for the transverse Kerr effect (F,) by analogy with the figure of merit for the longitudinal and polar Kerr effect (Fe). We have measured F, as a function of the angle of incidence and we have shown that F, has the same behavior of the magneto-optical signal. A comparison between F, and Fe has shown that F, is as good parameter as well as Fe for the characterization of the materials magneto-optical quality. We have studied the sperimagnetism of thin films of amorphous alloys with weak (Gd-Co) and strong (Ho-Co) random local anisotropy by the thermal behavior of the magnetic and magneto-optical hysteresis loops. The phenomena of compensation, coercivity and spin-reorientation phase transitions were observed. The comparison between magnetic and magneto-optical hysteresis loops for Gd20C~8h0as shown that the transition occurs from a colinear phase to an opposite collinear phase. In this case, the transition magnetic field grows exponentially when the temperature increases.

Propriétés magnéto-optiques de nanotubes de carbone individuels suspendus / Magneto-optical properties of individual suspended carbon nanotubesGandil, Morgane 17 July 2017 (has links)
This thesis is dedicated to the experimental study of the intrinsic magneto-optical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes through time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Measurements are performed on suspended nanotubes samples at the single-object level using a home-built confocal optical microscope with a large numerical aperture (NA = 0.95) operating at cryogenic temperature (down to 2K) and high magnetic field (up to 7T). The evolution of the photoluminescence spectra and decay signals with increasing magnetic fields shows the influence of the Aharonov-Bohm effect on the two lowest-energy singlet excitons, namely the ground exciton which is optically inactive (dark exciton) and an exciton lying a few millielectron volts higher in energy which is optically active (bright exciton). A model of these results based on rate equations and including the Aharonov-Bohm coupling between these two excitons enables to determine separately the excitons lifetimes and to derive quantitative information on the energy relaxation from the photo-excited higher levels. The energy relaxation following the photo-excitation of the S22 transition leads to a bright state population efficiency four times lower than that of the dark state, but it significantly increases when energy relaxation occurs from the KK’ excitonic levels. Thanks to a good signal to noise ratio, the photoluminescence spectra also reveal the presence of an intrinsic zero-field coupling between the dark and the brightexcitons, as well as an excitonic mobility preserved at liquid helium temperature in suspended nanotubes.

Continuous Beam of Laser-Cooled Ytterbium Atoms for Precision MeasurementsRathod, Ketan D January 2014 (has links) (PDF)
What if an elementary particle such as an electron had an intrinsic electric dipole moment (EDM)? Existence of such an EDM would be an indication of time-reversal symmetry
violation in the laws of Physics. The Standard model of Physics is considered incomplete, and theories that go beyond the standard model predict existence of such EDM’s within experimental reach. Experiments that search for their existence serve as a test bed for these theories. Use of laser-cooled Yb atoms launched in a fountain for EDM search has been proposed earlier.
This thesis describes the main experimental work on generating a continuous cold
beam of Yb atoms using laser cooling. Such cold beams are ideal for performing EDM
experiments and have several advantages over the more common pulsed fountain. We
demonstrate two ways to achieve this (i) extracting the beam from atoms trapped in 2-
dimensions and (ii) deflecting the atomic beam using 1D-optical molasses. We find that
the latter method gives a longitudinal temperature of 41 mK, which is a factor of 3 better than the former one. We also demonstrate the implementation of Ramsey’s separated oscillatory field technique in a thermal beam to measure the larmor precession frequency with high precision. This serves as a first step towards implementation with cold beam.
Extending the work reported here, we suggest future experiment for measuring an EDM.

However, due to an actual low figure of merit, this material cannot be embedded on integrated non-reciprocal devices. In order to exalt the magneto-optical effects and figure of merit, the LT2C laboratory adopted a process based on opals to 3D structure the material. The selected process consists in elaborating direct opals by self-assembling monodisperse polystyrene microspheres on glass substrate. Those opals are then impregnated with a homogeneous solution of sol-gel silica precursors doped with cobalt ferrite nanoparticles. Resulting samples are later oven dried for 1 hour at 90°C. Finally, polystyrene spheres are dissolved in ethyl acetate to obtain a 3D structure formed by air voids in doped silica matrix. In this context, the objective of this thesis is to optimize the fabrication process of opals in order to improve their structural and magneto-optical quality. Furthermore, it consists in making a systematic study of the magneto-optical effect in these structures in order to investigate the spectral behavior of the Faraday effect and thus quantify the figure of merit. Analysis of SEM images and optical characterization prove that our elaboration process leads to the fabrication of opals with good structural and optical quality. Measurements of Faraday rotation and ellipticity as a function of applied magnetic field show hysteresis loops with an unambiguous non-reciprocal behavior. These observations highlight the magneto-photonic character of the doped inverse opals. A systematic spectral study of the magneto-optical effect in these 3D structures displays two peaks and an attenuation of Faraday rotation and ellipticity, respectively at the edges and the center of the photonic band gap. However, these significant spectral modifications do not increase the value of figure of merit. This ascertainment is primarily due to structural defects that lower the transmission magnitude of the doped inverse opals in comparison to a magneto-optical reference monolayer

Návrh propojení far-infrared spektrometru k supravodivému magnetu a magneto-optické měření ve far-infrared oblasti / Design of the far-infrared spectrometer coupling to a superconductive magnet and magneto-optical measurements in the far-infrared regionDubnická Midlíková, Jana January 2018 (has links)

We report a quantitative analysis of thickness dependent epitaxial strain-induced effects in La1-xSrxMnO3 (LSMO) (001) (x = 0.33) thin films of thicknesses (50, 25 and 12 nm) grown on various single crystal substrates such as SrTiO3 (STO) (001), STO buffered MgO (001), NdGaO3 (NGO) (110) and (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7 (LSAT) (001) by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique. We also report the composition dependent magnetic properties of LSMO thin films with x = 0.33 and 0.38 in particular grown onto LSAT (001) substrate by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). The study mainly includes measurements such as X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), temperature dependent four-probe resistivity, magnetization properties by Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID), magnetic anisotropy by Magneto-Optical Kerr Magnetometry (MOKE). Our results highlight the detailed study of angular evolution and thickness dependent magnetic anisotropy, remanence, coercivity and switching field in epitaxial LSMO thin films. Temperature-dependent studies are also performed on few selected films. We will also discuss the cause of magnetic anisotropy in LSMO films i.e., magneto-crystalline and magnetostriction anisotropy and the effects of steps or substrate mis-cut induced anisotropy.
