The Effects of Laryngeal Desiccation and Nebulized Isotonic Saline in Male Speakers

Hydration of the vocal folds is important for the production of normal voice. Dehydration makes voice production more difficult and increases vocal effort. Laryngeal desiccation has been shown to increase phonation threshold pressure (PTP) and self-perceived phonatory effort (PPE) in females. Nebulized saline may reverse or offset this effect. However, few data exist regarding the effects of laryngeal desiccation and nebulized treatments in males. Further, the dose-response relationship between laryngeal desiccation and nebulized hydration treatments is unknown. This study examined the effects of two doses of nebulized isotonic saline following a laryngeal desiccation challenge in healthy male speakers. In a double-blinded, within-subjects design, 10 male college students (age range 18-26 years) attended two data collection sessions involving a 30-minute desiccation challenge followed by 3 mL or 9 mL of nebulized isotonic saline. PTP for the 10th and 80th fundamental frequency (F0) percentiles and PPE were collected before and after the desiccation challenge and at 5, 35, and 65 minutes after the nebulized treatment. PPE increased significantly following the laryngeal desiccation challenge (p < .01). Following nebulization, PPE decreased toward baseline for both doses of isotonic saline (p < .01), but failed to reverse the desiccation effect completely. No statistically significant changes in PTP occurred following the laryngeal desiccation challenge or subsequent treatments. Compared with previous research involving females, these results suggest males may respond differently to laryngeal desiccation and nebulized hydration treatments.

Vocal fold hydration is important for healthy function of the vocal mechanism. Vocal fold surface fluid protects the mucosa and facilitates efficient vocal fold oscillation. Dry air exposure, mouth breathing, insufficient intake of liquids, and behavioral factors may contribute to laryngeal dehydration. Singers are believed to be particularly at risk for voice problems related to dehydration due to environmental and voice use factors. Laryngeal desiccation and nebulized hydration treatments have been shown to influence phonation threshold pressure (PTP) and self-perceived phonatory effort (PPE) in females. However, little research exists exploring the effects of hydration in males. Additionally, few studies have examined the dose-response relationship of hydration treatments. This investigation examined the effects of a laryngeal desiccation challenge and two different doses of nebulized isotonic saline on voice production in trained male singers. In a double-blind, within-subjects repeated measures crossover investigation, 10 male singers (ages 18 to 24) received a 30 minute laryngeal desiccation challenge followed by either 3 mL or 9 mL of nebulized isotonic saline on two consecutive weeks. PTP, PPE, and self-perceived mouth and throat dryness were sampled during the following observations: predesiccation, post-desiccation, and at 5, 35, and 65 minutes post-nebulization. No differences in PTP were observed after desiccation or nebulized treatment. PPE, however, rose significantly after desiccation and returned near baseline after treatment. No significant differences between dosages were observed.

Career Decision-making Patterns Of Undecided African-american Male Transfer Students: A Qualitative Approach

The career development and career decision-making needs of African-American males have generated much inquiry. Two year colleges currently serve as the predominant point of entry for many African-American male students seeking baccalaureate degrees. However, the transition to and eventual success at the four-year institution is often met with challenges. The inability to choose a major that may lead to a desired career has the potential to serve as a barrier for some students. From the lens of social cognitive career theory, this qualitative study was conducted to examine the experiences of undecided, African-American male transfer students at a large, four-year metropolitan university. Upon analyzing data from the interviews, themes were developed according to three research questions. Themes that offered insight into major selection process included: (a) choosing a major that offered potential job stability/security, (b) experiences related to academic ability, and (c) experiences with gender relative to career decision-making. Participation in the Direct Connect program was the minor theme found related to experiences encountered in the transfer process that influence major and/or career development. Themes related to the development of career decision-making self-efficacy included: (a) choosing careers believed to be consistent with one’s person, (b) indecision while at the community college, (c) engagement in practical experiences, (d) solving problems, (e) meeting with advisors and counselors at the community college, and (e) involvement in extracurricular activities

Reactions to eye contact in aggressive and nonaggressive adolescent males

Few, if any, researchers have investigated the relationship between eye contact and aggression or hostility in aggressive, incarcerated adolescents where eye contact may induce hostility or where aggression would seem most prevalent because aggressive youth may be more provoked by ambiguous provocation stimuli (eye contact). Therefore, this study investigated possible differences in the interpretation of staring between incarcerated aggressive and nonincarcerated nonaggressive adolescents. Aggressive adolescents were selected from a juvenile justice center in California, while nonaggressive adolescents were recruited from a high school. Following tile lines of the hostile attributional bias theory (Dodge & Coie, 1987), three predictions were made. Compared to nonaggressive youth, aggressive youth would be more likely to: (a) attribute hostile intent to someone who stared at them; (b) expect to act aggressively if confronted by someone who stared at them, especially when the staring person does something unpleasant in which the intent is ambiguous; and (c) rate someone with direct eye contact higher on potency. To manipulate eye positions, the researcher utilized photographs, which the adolescents rated to test the above three predictions. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Adolescence is an uphill struggle. Research abundantly displays that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have a distinct and detrimental effect on adolescents and their development. Recent research has explored the perspectives, thoughts, behaviours, and beliefs of helping professionals who integrate spirituality into their work with adolescents. The purpose of this qualitative study is to develop a thematic analysis of helping professionals’ narratives of care with this population. The narratives of helping professionals’ care of adolescent males with ACEs points to the desire to connect with spiritual community and to make meaning. Helping professionals’ narratives also highlight the constraints of locating spirituality. Theological reflection on parrhesia focuses on developing open, unencumbered discussion as an ethical, professional, and spiritually-sensitive form of integration. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

This hermeneutic phenomenological study investigated the experiences and perspectives of Black male residence life professionals regarding attrition in student affairs, especially in the context of the COVID-19 global pandemic. In higher education, the phenomenon of high attrition among student affairs professionals is a major concern, with minoritized communities facing unique challenges. This study aimed to fill a gap in the literature by concentrating on the experiences of Black male residence life professionals working at a predominantly White institution in the United States in 2020. The study used Bronfenbrenner's bioecological systems theory as a theoretical framework to understand factors that impact attrition rates. Due to the pandemic and the complexities of institutional racism and microaggressions, Black male residence life professionals faced significant challenges and displayed incredible resolve during an unprecedented higher education crisis, according to this study. These findings are important for devising strategies for recruiting and retaining underrepresented professionals in student affairs.
