Comportamento de escolha em ratos Sprague Dawley (Rattus norvegicus) sob restrição alimentar / Behavior of choice in Sprague-dawley (Rattus norvegicus) rats under food restriction

O comportamento de escolha é entendido como a seleção de uma entre duas ou mais alternativas disponíveis, diferente da preferência, que está relacionada ao tempo despendido respondendo a uma dessas alternativas. Em pesquisas com não humanos, observa-se que os sujeitos escolhem com maior frequência as alternativas nas quais o reforço estará disponível de forma imediata, em pequena quantidade, em comparação com a alternativa na qual o reforço estará disponível somente depois que o animal esperar um tempo determinado (atraso), mas em maior quantidade. Apesar da literatura apresentar dados sobre a influência da restrição alimentar e do sexo do animal em tarefas de aprendizagem, é importante aprofundar a investigação desses aspectos em tarefas de escolha. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi comparar o desempenho de ratos Sprague Dawley (machos e fêmeas) com história de restrição alimentar e ratos controle (com comida ad libitum), em uma tarefa de escolha, em que as alternativas variavam em relação ao atraso para ter acesso à comida e à quantidade de comida disponível. Foram utilizados 24 ratos (12 machos), de linhagem Sprague-Dawley, divididos em dois grupos. O Grupo Controle (C) recebeu dieta ad lib., enquanto o Grupo Restrição (R) teve sua dieta restrita a 80% da dieta do grupo controle. Aos 70 dias de idade, houve uma subdivisão dos grupos: metade dos animais do Grupo C formou o Grupo Controle-Restrito (CR 80% da dieta), e a outra metade o Controle-Controle (CC 100% da dieta). No Grupo R, metade dos animais formou o Grupo Restrito-Controle (RC 100% da dieta) e a outra metade, o Grupo Restrito-Restrito (RR 80% da dieta). Na Etapa 1 os animais exploravam labirinto em U em uma sessão de 10 tentativas. Na Etapa 2 foram realizadas 10 sessões de 16 tentativas de escolha forçada, sendo oito no braço direito, onde havia seis pelotas de ração disponíveis após atraso de 15 s (alternativa LL), e oito no braço esquerdo, com três pelotas de ração disponíveis sem atraso (alternativa SS). Na Etapa 3, foram conduzidas 45 sessões com 30 tentativas (10 forçadas e 20 livres), para verificar o padrão de escolha dos animais dos diferentes grupos em função da disponibilidade de reforço em cada alternativa, do atraso em uma das alternativas e do tempo inicial de espera (tempo T). Os animais de todos os grupos apresentaram preferência pela alternativa SS, independente do sexo ou da dieta. Ao comparar a porcentagem de escolhas dos grupos com relação às dietas foram verificadas diferenças no padrão e nas latências médias de escolha. O grupo RR apresentou latências médias de escolha significativamente inferiores às do grupo CC e um estabelecimento mais rápido de preferência pela alternativa SS que o grupo CC. Apesar de não terem sido encontradas diferenças significativas entre machos e fêmeas nos parâmetros analisados (possivelmente em função do n amostral), verificou-se que fêmeas apresentaram latências menores que machos em todos os grupos, além de porcentagens de escolha pela alternativa SS maiores que os machos. São discutidas hipóteses sobre a influência da dieta e da quantidade de alimento disponível em cada alternativa sobre as escolhas dos grupos. Essas hipóteses são também relacionadas a aspectos evolutivos, referentes às funções desempenhadas por machos e fêmeas na natureza. / The behavior of choice is understood as the selection of between two or more alternatives available, different from the preference, which is related to the time spent by responding to one of these alternatives. In researches with non-human animals, it is observed that the subjects choose more frequently the alternatives on which the reinforcement will be available immediately, in small quantity, in comparison with the alternative in which the reinforcement is available only after the animal expects a certain time (delay), but in greater quantity. Although literature present data on the influence of food restriction and the sex of the animal in tasks of learning, it is important to deepen the investigation of these aspects in tasks of choice. The objective of this research was to compare the performance of rats Sprague Dawley (male and female) with a history of food restriction and control rats (with food ad libitum), in a task of choice, in that the alternatives varied in relation to the waiting time for access to food and the quantity of food available. 24 albino rats (12 males), from Sprague-Dawley lineage was used, divided in two groups. The Control Group (C) received diet ad lib., while the group restriction (R) had their diet restricted to 80% of the diet of the control group. At 70 days of age, there was a subdivision of the groups: half of the animals from group C formed the Group Controle-Restrito (CR - 80% of the diet), and the other half the Controle-Controle (CC - 100% of the diet). In Group R, half of the animals formed the Group Restrito-Controle (RC - 100% of the diet) and the other half, the Restrito-Restrito group (RR - 80% of the diet). In Step 1 the animals explored the labyrinth in U in a session of 10 attempts. In Step 2, there were 10 sessions of 16 attempts of forced choice, being 8 in the right arm, where there were six pellets of ration available after delay of 15 s, and eight in the left arm with three pellets of rations without delay. In Step 3, 45 sessions were conducted with 30 attempts (10 forced and 20 free), tarry check the default choice of animals of different groups in relation to the availability of strengthening in each alternative, the delay in one of the alternatives and the initial time wait time (T). Animals of all groups have preference for the SS alternative, independently of sex or diet. Differences were verified in the pattern and average latencies of choices in comparing the percentage of choices of the groups in relation to the diets. The RR group presented significantly lower average latency in comparison to group CC and a faster preference was established for alternative SS than group CC. Even having no significant differences been found between males and females in the scope studied (possibly due to then sampling), it was verified that females present lower latencies that males in all groups, besides the higher percentages for choosing alternative SS in males. Hypotheses are discussed on the influence of the diet and the quantity of food available in each alternative over the group choices. These hypotheses are also related to evolutionary aspects, referent to functions performed by males and females in nature.

The purpose of this quantitative survey research study was to determine variables that predict the muscle dysmorphia symptomology in a nonclinical sample of high school adolescent males. The psycho-behavioral model of muscle dysmorphia was used as the conceptual model to explain the psychological factors such as self-esteem and body dissatisfaction and behavioral factors such as bodybuilding dependence that were hypothesized to be related to muscle dysmorphia. Quantitative surveys included the Body Dysmorphic Examination Self Report, Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Body Building Dependence Scale and a researcher-developed demographic survey. The study participants included a sample of 97 high school males. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the relative strength of the variables in predicting muscle dysmorphia. The results showed that there were several significant predictors of muscle dysmorphia symptomology including race/ethnicity, level of body dissatisfaction, and body building dependence. Sexual orientation and self-esteem were not significant predictors of muscle symptomology. The current study filled the gap in the literature regarding factors that predict muscle dysmorphia among adolescent males. This information supports the development of professional practice and psychoeducational programs designed to assist adolescent males with muscle dysmorphia. This study benefits this cohort by presenting awareness of muscle dysmorphia.

Perceptions of African-American Males on Retention: Two Focus Groups

The intent of this study was to identify the issues that impact the retention of African-American, Black males in college. The study was of two small focus groups comprised of African-American students of various grade classifications from a regional comprehensive university in the southeast. These focus groups were comprised of up to but no more than six students. The decision on the group size was made to allow all of the students’ ample opportunity to respond to the eight questions used in the focus groups. The student groups attended the university main campus as well as the university South Campus where developmental courses are taught. The students were from both rural and urban backgrounds, as well as single parent and traditional family backgrounds. Various themes emerged as a result of this study which includes: importance of family support prior to college and during the student’s college career. Additionally, the role of mentors was identified as affecting the student’s retention in college. There was also discussion of how Black males are viewed on campus by other Black students, as well as other students and the faculty and staff. It can be concluded that several factors have affected the retention of this small group of African-American males in higher education. The information gathered shows that family support is a key cog in the retention of this group; in addition, the role of mentors in their education was very important to this group of students.

Examining the experiences and perceptions of Latino males pursuing a PhD in the social sciences/humanities at a predominately White, research-intensive, public university

The struggles of Latino males along the education pipeline have been well documented in recent history. Despite this increased research focus, gaps continue to exist in the literature on Latino males in education settings. Currently, the literature predominately centers on the Latino male experience in the K-12, community college, and 4-year college environments. The educational experiences of Latino males in doctoral education settings have not yet been presented. This study examines and provides insight into the Latino male doctoral student journey by detailing Latino male doctoral student experiences and perceptions at a predominately White, research-intensive, public university. In light of the deficit model research surrounding men of color, it is imperative to present the narratives of successful, high achieving Latino males along their pursuit of a doctoral degree. This study critically examines the experiences and perceptions of Latino males in pursuit of a PhD within the humanities or social sciences at a predominately White, research-intensive, public university. The mission of the study was to shed light on thematic influences, factors, and emotions that led these individuals to take interest and pursue a doctoral degree. The study's findings are presented under the lens of Latino critical race theory and gender role conflict in order to develop a thorough understanding of the internal and external influences on the Latino male doctoral student experience. My dissertation's unique contributions are its addition of the Latino male doctoral student experience to the literature on Latino males in educational contexts. Furthermore, this study's unique contributions include a new perspective on how Latino males perceive their gender roles and responsibilities as successful doctoral students. The Latino male doctoral students in this study displayed resilience during moments of vulnerability and embrace responsibility during challenging circumstances. These actions were efforts to maintain control of their doctoral education experience and to create a new image for Latino masculinity. As the findings indicate, the Latino male doctoral student experience at a large predominately White, research-intensive, public university is filled with complexity, adversity, and determination. / text

An Examination of the Association Between Student-Teacher Interactions and Academic Self-Concept Among African American Male High School Students

Students generally spend more than ten years interacting with teachers in a classroom and thus, such interactions can have a positive or negative impact on students’ academic self-concept and educational goals (Rosenthal, Folse, Allerman, Boudreaux, Soper, & Von Bergen, 2000). The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a significant relationship between student-teacher interactions and academic self-concept. Participants in the study include African American male high school students in an urban school district. The independent variable is the student-teacher interactions, as measured by the Student-Professor Interaction Scale (Cokley et al., 2004). The dependent variable is the students’ academic-self-concept, which is measured by the Academic Self-Concept Scale (Reynolds, Ramirez, Magrina, & Allen, 1980). The data was analyzed by using Pearson’s correlation and hierarchical multiple regression to determine if there was a statistically significant relationship between the two variables. Findings, study limitations, and future research directions are also discussed.

Self-determination in context : an examination of factors that influence school performance among African American males in high school

The purpose of this study was to examine self-determination and achievement motivation as predictors of successful school performance for high school African American males enrolled in an urban Texas school district. The students (N = 108) were placed into two distinct groups: higher-performing and lower-performing African American males based upon the following: (a) Numerical average in core classes taken, (b) performance on the Texas state achievement test, (c) placement in academic classes and programs, and (d) attendance and discipline records. This study employed both qualitative and quantitative methodologies in which African American males responded to The Needs Satisfaction Scale (Ilardi, Leone, Kasser, & Ryan, 1993; Deci & Ryan, 2000; Gagne, 2003) and The Student Opinion Survey/Education Survey (Murdock, 1993). Tests of multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were used in this study to measure the mean differences between the two groups in terms of self-determination (autonomy, relatedness, and competence); and achievement motivation (personal motivation, parent encouragement, teacher support, and peer support). The study found statistically significant differences in levels of self-determination and achievement motivation between the two groups. The qualitative segment was used to explore factors that lead to successful school performance for the African American males included in this study. Four themes emerged: (a) parental encouragement and expectations, (b) involvement in extracurricular activities, (c) personal motivation to achieve, and (d) relationships with significant adults. Recommendations are made to replicate this study in school with larger African American student enrollment and in schools with high achievement and high economic levels. Also, the study may be replicated with other ethnic groups who historically have experienced poor school performance. / text

"No Brothers on the Wall": Black Male Icons in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing

abstract: Hollywood's portrayal of African American men was replete with negative stereotypes before Shelton Jackson Lee, commonly known as Spike Lee, emerged as one of the most creative and provocative filmmakers of our time. Lee has used his films to perform a corrective history of images of black men, by referencing African American male icons in his narrative works. This strategy was evident in his third feature film, Do the Right Thing (1989). Baseball great Jackie Robinson, and freedom fighters, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, were the black male icons featured prominently in the film. The Brooklyn-raised filmmaker's film journals, published interviews, and companion books, have provided insight into his thoughts, motivations, and inspirations, as he detailed the impact of the black male historical figures he profiles in Do the Right Thing (1989), on his life and art. Lee deployed his corrective history strategy, during the 1980s, to reintroduce African American heroes to black youth in an effort to correct media portrayals of black men as criminal and delinquent. He challenged the dominant narrative in mainstream Hollywood films, such as Cry Freedom (1987) and Mississippi Burning (1989), in which white heroes overshadowed black male icons. Lee's work parallels recent scholarship on the history of African American males, as called for by Darlene Clarke Hine and Ernestine Jenkins. The prolific director's efforts to radically change stereotypical depictions of black men through film, has not gone without criticisms. He has been accused of propagating essentialist notions of black male identity, through his use of African American male icons in his films. Despite these alleged shortcomings, Lee's reintroduction of iconic figures such as Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, in Do the Right Thing (1989), marked the beginning of a wave of commemorative efforts, that included the retiring of Robinson's number forty-two by Major League Baseball, the popularization of the Martin Luther King National Holiday, and the rise of Malcolm X as a icon embraced by Hip Hop during the 1990's. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. History 2012

Orchids produce chemical compounds to attract males of Euglossine bees (the effective pollinators of the orchids), and these compounds were isolated and are being used to study the biology of the euglossine males. Allozymes markers, although their low polymorphism content, were widely applied in population analyses. In order to provide a powerful tool to be applied to nest and population genetics research, primers flanking microsatellite loci were developed for Eulaema nigrita and Euglossa cordata (13 loci each). The use of these markers in 483 euglossine males of Euglossa, Eufriesea, Eulaema and Exaerete species, sampled in several Brazilian biomes and areas, evidenced the presence of only two diploid males, one in Euglossa annectans and other in Euglossa mandibularis. These findings support the hypothesis that diploid males (usually unviable or sterile individuals) occur in low frequencies in Brazilian Euglossine bee populations, a fact that is according to previous studies using allozymes. The application of these markers to nest structure analyses revealed nest sharing among unrelated females of Eulaema nigrita (eight nests). For Euglossa cordata and Euglossa townsendi nests (11 and seven nests, respectively), analysis demonstrated that monogamy (one female mated with a single male) is the rule, although nest sharing among unrelated females could also occur in E. townsendi. These results give a new focus on the research about population genetics and nest sociogenetic structure of Euglossine bees, opening new insights on the Euglossini biology and genetics. / As abelhas Euglossini são polinizadores importantes de várias espécies Neotropicais e, particularmente, para as orquídeas, onde a relação espécie-específica abelha-flor pode ser decisiva no sucesso reprodutivo destas plantas. Os machos são os polinizadores efetivos das orquídeas, cujos compostos atrativos produzidos por estas foram isolados e têm sido utilizados em diversos estudos envolvendo os machos de Euglossini. Os marcadores alozímicos, mais comumente utilizados nos estudos do grupo, apresentam em geral, um baixo polimorfismo, o que limita de certa forma as análises populacionais. Visando analisar de uma maneira mais acurada a genética das populações e de ninhos destas espécies de abelhas foram desenhados primers flanqueando locos de microssatélites em Eulaema nigrita e Euglossa cordata (13 locos cada). O emprego destes marcadores em 483 machos de 23 espécies de Euglossini dos gêneros Euglossa, Eufriesea, Eulaema e Exaerete provenientes de diversas regiões do Brasil revelou a presença somente de dois machos diplóides, um em Euglossa annectans e outro em Euglossa mandibularis. Estes achados reforçam a proposição de que os machos diplóides (geralmente inviáveis ou estéreis) não são freqüentes em populações destas abelhas do Brasil, corroborando dados prévios obtidos por meio de análise alozímica. O emprego dessa metodologia na avaliação da estrutura nidal revelou ainda que em Eulaema nigrita (oito ninhos) ocorre o compartilhamento do ninho entre fêmeas não aparentadas. Para as espécies Euglossa cordata e Euglossa townsendi (11 e sete ninhos, respectivamente) os ninhos, via de regra, são formados por uma fêmea acasalada com um único macho, embora para E. townsendi também tenha sido observado o compartilhamento de ninho por fêmeas não aparentadas. Os dados aqui apresentados lançam um novo olhar sobre a genética das populações e a estrutura sociogenética nidal de Euglossini, sendo, certamente, uma contribuição importante para o avanço do conhecimento a respeito da biologia e genética deste grupo de abelhas.

African American male pathways to college: a multi-institutional study of family involvement and influence

More specifically, the purpose of this study was to investigate how, and in what ways, families shaped the pathway to higher education among 12 African American male collegians. Comparisons of these perceptions across family compositions and an extant model of family influence and college choice were also explored. The students in this study attended both public and private 4-year historically Black and predominantly White colleges situated throughout seven states in the Midwest and the South. A phenomenological qualitative research approach was employed to forward this study. Also, interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) techniques were applied to data gleaned from face-to-face interviews. Results of the study revealed two overarching themes of family influence and college choice for African American males: (1) deliberate family involvement and (2) contextual family influences. Eight subthemes illuminate the overarching theme deliberate family involvement: (1) emphasizing hard work, (2) aiding with pre-college paperwork, (3) offering messages about value of college, (4) supporting extra-curricular activities, (5) encouraging positive decision-making, (6) cultural indoctrination, (7) providing affirming words and praise, and (8) regular accessibility. Four subthemes buttress the overarching theme contextual family influence: (1) family educational choices, (2) family participation, (3) family representation and reactions, and (4) family stress. Implications for practice and recommendations for future research are also presented.
