[en] IMPRESSIONS ON IMAGES: HISTORY MEMORY AND AUGUSTO MALTA CARIOCA PHOTOGRAPHY / [pt] IMPRESSÕES IMAGÉTICAS: HISTÓRIA, MEMÓRIA E A FOTOGRAFIA CARIOCA DE AUGUSTO MALTA

AMANDA DANELLI COSTA 06 March 2008 (has links)
[en] This work tries to approximate memory and photography, and at the same time the act of make photography and act of writing history. Then the work persecutes the propose of analyze a group of four photos that Augusto Malta made in the streets of Rio de Janeiro in the beginning of the 20th century. In the 19th century was given to the photographers the function of recorders of a world passing through many changes. Those professionals were hired as the responsibles to keep the images that were changing quickly, especially in the cities. There was a desire to build an album dedicated to the memory of times, and prove of the changes in the world. This was the work that Augusto Malta did for the mayor Pereira Passos. Through this way the photography is analyzed as a faithful representation of the visible world. The Kiosque s images became a prove to the project of modernization of the city, in a relation to the national mobilization around a modern identity.

[en] BEHIND THE OBJECTIVE: FIXITY AND MOVEMENT IN AUGUSTO MALTAS PHOTOGRAPHY AND RIO DE JANEIRO / [pt] DETRÁS DA OBJETIVA: FIXIDEZ E MOVIMENTO NA FOTOGRAFIA E NO RIO DE JANEIRO DE AUGUSTO MALTA

VIVIANE DA SILVA ARAUJO 25 March 2009 (has links)
[en] Augusto Malta (1864-1957), despite having occupied the position of the municipal official photographer of Rio de Janeiro between 1903 and 1936 and has numerous particular images of the city, had his name linked to Francisco Pereira Passos, from his time until this days. The proposal of this dissertation is to analyze Malta as a subject behind the objective, that is, someone who has an entire field of technical and visual possibilities, choose to each click a way to represent the world. At the same time that the experiences of the city lived by Malta incite and constitute his looking, I believe he reconstructs the city from the rectangle of his machine. In addition to question the training of historical epitome Malta, photographer-of-Pereira-Passos, the analysis is based around two sets of photographs: the images produced on the kiosks of the city between 1903 and 1911, and the photographs that had caught the Avenida Central/Rio Branco between 1904 and around 1930. From these pictures, I observe that Malta search recreate both the civilization of the boulevard as the delay of the kiosks, and on the other hand, the multiplicity of apprehensions made possible by their images presents a game between fixity and movement in the records of these urban spaces.

”De tenderar att orsaka mer besvär, tyvärr” : En kvalitativ studie om maltesiska polisers framställning av minoritetsgrupper / “They tend to cause more trouble unfortunately” : A qualitative study about Maltese police officers’ descriptions of minority groups

Brashear, Minnie January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate how Maltese police officers describe minority groups and to, based on the police's own descriptions, examine how they relate to the minority groups they encounter at work. The study is qualitative and has been conducted through interviews with police officers. The result showed that two groups were discussed based on how they affect their work and that was The Eastern Europeans and Muslims. The presentation of these groups indicated a otherization.

Habitat characterisation of infralittoral pebble beds in the Maltese Islands

Evans, Julian January 2014 (has links)
The Mediterranean biocoenosis of infralittoral pebbles has been poorly studied and very little information is available on the physical characteristics of pebble beds, on the diversity of the associated assemblages, on the spatial and temporal variation in assemblage structure, or on interactions between the physical and biotic components. The present study was therefore carried out to characterise pebble-bed assemblages as a first step towards understanding the ecological dynamics of these habitats. Preliminary surveys were made along the low-lying coasts of the Maltese Islands to map the occurrence of pebble-bed habitats. Fifteen locations with pebble coverage >25 m² were chosen for study and benthic sampling was undertaken between July–September 2011; water samples were also collected on a monthly basis. Five shallow sites were sampled for biota again at six-month intervals until April 2013. The pebble beds were characterised in terms of environmental parameters and biotic composition. A total of 62,742 individuals belonging to 360 macrofaunal taxa were recorded (total sampling area: 16 m²). Polychaetes, crustaceans and molluscs were the most common faunal groups. The recorded species included the endemic gastropod Gibbula nivosa, and the first central Mediterranean records of three gobiid species. Three distinct pebble-bed types were characterised based on physical and biological features: shallow beds occurring in rocky coves, beds found within creeks or seagrass meadows, and beds located in harbour environments; amendments to internationally used benthic habitat classification schemes have been proposed, since only a single category of pebble-bed habitats is currently recognised in these. A significant seasonal reduction in species richness and abundance was recorded from shallow sites, related to the higher level of disturbance occurring during winter storms. Analysis of diversity patterns in harbour sites indicated that a high richness per site and between-site variation in species composition led to the observed high diversity. Site richness was associated with fine-scale structural complexity, while environmental characteristics were correlated with variation in assemblage structure over a broad range of spatial scales. These findings suggest that pebble beds have a higher conservation value than generally thought. The biologically derived habitat classification scheme and knowledge on assemblage-environment relationships derived from the present work will be useful to inform and guide management decisions concerning these pebble-bed habitats.

Creative responses to Maltese culture and identity : case study and portfolio of compositions

Cassar, Mariella January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the relationship between place, identity and musical practice. The study is inspired by Malta’s history and culture. This work presents a portfolio of seven musical compositions with a written component that highlights the historical and socio-cultural issues that had a bearing on the works presented. A case study of the Maltese composer Charles Camilleri is also provided. Camilleri is both a great example of a composer for whom the articulation of national identity was a primary concern and a constant source of inspiration for the author of this thesis. The pieces presented here comprise compositions for chamber ensemble, works for orchestra and two electroacoustic pieces. These works were part of projects translated into performances and artistic installations. All of them have been carried out over the past six years and the majority have been developed through synergetic collaboration with other artists. The majority of the compositions have direct links with Maltese culture and the important events in its history. All the works presented in the portfolio are bound in separate volumes and reference is made to them in the critical commentary within the body of the thesis. A number of CDs and DVDs accompany this document with recordings and MIDI files of the selected compositions.

Motiven bakom Malta-deklarationen : En motivanalys av EU:s Maltadeklarationen / The motives behind the Malta declaration : An analysis of EU:s motives of the Malta declaration

Johansson, Juliette January 2019 (has links)

"Other Ways of Othering": The Subversion of Racist Motives in Excluding the Other in Othello and the Jew of Malta

Okamura, Brittanee 01 January 2019 (has links)
The means by which Othello and Barabas experience their racial othering is not directly by racist intentions. In experiencing their otherness through alternative motives, they then deny the power that their excluders initially desire.

Navarro Orellana, Patricia Alejandra January 2018 (has links)

Trade, piracy, and naval warfare in the central Mediterranean: the maritime history and archaeology of Malta

Atauz, Ayse Devrim 30 September 2004 (has links)
Located approximately in the middle of the central Mediterranean channel, the Maltese Archipelago was touched by the historical events that effected the political, economic and cultural environment of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The islands were close to the major maritime routes throughout history and they were often on the border between clashing military, political, religious, and cultural entities. For these reasons, the islands were presumed to have been strategically and economically important, and, thus, frequented by ships. An underwater archaeological survey around the archipelago revealed the scarcity of submerged cultural remains, especially pertaining to shipping and navigation. Preliminary findings elucidate a story that contrasts with the picture presented by modern history and historiography. In this sense, a comparison of the underwater archaeological data with the information gathered through a detailed study of Maltese maritime history clearly shows that the islands were attributed an exaggerated importance in historical texts, due to political and religious trends that are rooted in the period during which the islands were under the control of the Order of Saint John. An objective investigation of the historical and archaeological material provides a more balanced picture, and places the islands in a Mediterranean-wide historical framework from the first colonization of the archipelago eight thousands years ago to the twentieth century.
