The promotion of sustainable construction practices in Kuwait

The construction industry has a significant impact on the environment. It is responsible for a large proportion of global CO2 emissions, as well as the use of both natural resources and energy reserves. Green building practices are becoming increasingly recognised as a way of mitigating CO2 emissions and energy consumption, with economic, environmental, social and financial benefits accruing. The aim of the research reported here is to investigate the opportunities to promote sustainable construction practices in Kuwait. This entails identifying the current status of green construction practices, the awareness level of construction stakeholders, the key drivers that motivate the implementation of green practices, as well as barriers to green construction and the risks associated with its implementation. After comprehensively reviewing the literature, primary data were collected and analysed in three phases, using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The three phases of primary data gathering consist of conducting a questionnaire survey, an interview survey and running a simulation. Local stakeholders associated with the Kuwaiti construction industry are the target population and are used as a platform from which to obtain the data. A total of 678 questionnaires were distributed and 504 completed questionnaires were received, while a total of 96 interviews were conducted. The quantitative data is then analysed through descriptive analysis and inferential statistics with the help of SPSS and Microsoft Excel, while the qualitative data is analysed using the content analysis method. Simulation analysis is performed using IES VE (Integrate Environmental Solution) computer simulation software in order to demonstrate the impact different construction materials have on the energy efficiency of the building. The main findings of this research are as follows: implementation of the concept of sustainability is low in the Kuwaiti construction industry; more action and strategies to improve and encourage this concept are therefore required in order for it to be applied efficiently in future construction projects; lack of awareness is found to be the main barrier to the use of green construction methods in Kuwait; the Kuwaiti government must take initiatives in terms of introducing standards, policies and incentives to promote green construction; the risks affecting the development of green construction processes vary and are unevenly distributed throughout the construction industry in Kuwait, but common risks, such as ‘lack of experts’, ‘limit of a green supply chain’, ‘lack of experts ‘ and ‘higher cost’, are considered the most important risks overall; improved measures concerning the use of energy-saving materials can facilitate the achievement of energy-effective building design. The findings of this study provide valuable information for organisations that intend to participate in green construction projects in Kuwait. Recommendations based on the research findings and conclusions are offered to the Kuwaiti construction industry and government. Recommendations for further research are identified.

A hybrid model of communication and information management in mega construction projects in Dubai using a new critical success factor approach

Mega construction projects are complex undertakings. The complexity is increased during a construction boom in a city such as Dubai where more than 80% of material and labour resources are imported. The complexities inherent in mega construction projects include uncertainty and interdependencies, which affect project management performance at the operational level where most of the problems occur. Understanding these processes, how they interrelate and how to overcome the complexities is crucial for increasing the chances of project management success. This research contributed to construction project management theory and practice by using a highly inductive exploratory qualitative approach for capturing formal and informal processes in mega construction projects in Dubai. A dynamic model depicting the complementary formal and informal processes is developed showing formal and informal processes and how they interrelate to reduce complexity. Guidelines on how and when to use specific processes are provided as a framework for the model. This framework may be used to help develop communication processes in future complex projects to increase chances of project management success. The research was conducted by exploring two case study projects fitting the characteristics of mega construction projects. Both case study projects were of values above 1.5 Billion US Dollars and were similar in scope with elements including amusement parks, retail areas, hotels, extensive infrastructure and large landscape areas. Both case study projects were of an experimental character, considered an engineering achievement, complex, and thereby, difficult to control. The research data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 83 project staff from both case study projects. Rich picture diagrams of the organization and processes were made from data collected during the interviews and case study project documents. The analysis was performed in three phases where the results from each phase were built upon cumulatively. The first phase examined what the most crucial critical success factors (CSFs) were in the case study projects. These were revealed to be communication, top management support and effective change management. In the second phase each CSF was analyzed where it was found it that the majority of important communication modes were informal and were was most effective in reducing complexity. Furthermore, it was found that the characteristics of the client were crucial in both case study projects. The third phase involved development of the dynamic hybrid model from the rich picture diagrams created showing the interplay between formal and informal processes. It was found that informal processes are ad-hoc and chaotic in nature and controlled by individuals in the project. Development of guidelines for the positive use of informal processes was required. From the analysis it was found that the characteristics of client staff and individuals in the case study projects provided the main guidelines for effective use of the hybrid model. The research provides insights into the formal and informal processes and the reduction and management of complexity inherent in mega construction projects. Current research in managing complexity is from the perspective of the formal process where the informal processes are neglected, despite research and practice indicating their importance in construction projects. The research presents a systemic dynamic model of the processes for mega construction projects revealing that formal and informal processes are required and are complementary. Guidelines for the successful use of the model provide a framework for its application in practice. This shows how it can be used to inform understanding of processes in the context of the research. The model and guidelines were validated via discussions with practitioners experienced in construction of mega projects. Future work should expand the findings to applications of the model in practice for management of complex projects. The model may be used by practitioners to act as a guide in how to manage construction processes to consciously overcome the inherent complexities to achieve project management objectives. This tool may also be used to inform clients of the inherent complexities and the level of informality required to overcome them. IT/IS practitioners may use the model and framework to understand the complexities in construction, and thereby, develop systems that are practically applied in construction projects. Researchers in the field may build upon the model and findings to increase knowledge regarding construction processes, particularly informal processes.

Integrating Knowledge through Project Lessons Learned: A Case Study of Global NPD Projects in Company X in the Automotive Industry

Knowledge integration is a fundamental capability for Global New Product Development(NPD) success that allows exploiting windows of opportunity and foster innovation.Although Global NPD projects are recipients of project management methodologies,literature emphasizes a gap in how project management tools can support a knowledgeintegration capability. Therefore, this study aims to explore how project lessons learned,a project management tool, can enable knowledge integration in a global NPD context. To this extent, this study presents the case study of Company X, applying a qualitativemethod which follows an interpretivist philosophical stance and an inductive approach.The case study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with project managersand team members from two Research & Development (R&D) Centers. The datacollected was analyzed using a template analysis and matrix display. The literature review of this study introduces knowledge integration as a capability forglobal NPD, its mechanisms and influencing organizational factors. Project lessonslearned are presented as a project management tool that encompass experiences fromprojects and hence serve as a source of knowledge. This results in a theoretical frameworkfor knowledge integration and project lessons learned as an enabler of this capability,which works as a foundation for the empirical research. The findings of the applied methodology confirmed the elements of the theoreticalframework, and contributed to develop a framework that illustrates how project lessonslearned enable knowledge integration capability. Moreover, the findings explored theorganizational context of Global NPD projects, the tacit and explicit mechanisms tointegrate knowledge in and between projects and the different levels on which theorganizational factors influence the knowledge integration process. Recommendationsfor an effective knowledge integration are suggested for both academics and practitioners,as well as potential areas of research to continue extending the knowledge on this field.

The processed topic should help novice headmasters in particular with the fundamentals of project management. It explains the basic concepts of project management and deals with the description of the forms and methods of project management. It explains the basic tasks, activities and competence of the project manager in education. The research part is trying to map out a so far relatively unexplored area of project management for headmasters of primary schools and kindergartens as well as analyze and visualize the needs of school headmasters in the area. The conclusions show that although elementary schools in particular recognize the benefits of participating in projects for schools, their support in this area is inadequate. The thesis offers proposals for measures that could be used to improve support for project managers in education.

Title: The Implementation of the Project "Neberte nám naši hru" and the Proposals to its Improvement Objectives: The main objective of this thesis is a detailed description of the project "Neberte nám naši hru" and based on the research methods which proposed changes for future years of the project. Methods: For a description of the project was used a method of observation in the role of a full member, and an analysis of documents. The parents of children were inquired by questionnaire construction to find out how they had perceived the project. To obtain expert opinions on the realization of the project and its media coverage were carried out two qualitative interviews. Results: The project "Neberte nám naši hru" is perceived by the target group very positively in terms of its main ideas and implementation. In other years can be recommended especially year-round communicate of the project ideas towards the football public in Prague. Within the year-round communication proposes the inclusion of new elements between project activities that should more attractive the project for the participants and for the media, which would contribute to increasing public awareness of the project and its ideas. O presente trabalho realizou um estudo das possibilidades de posicionamento do escritório de gerenciamento de projetos para contextos estratégicos dentro das organizações. A ênfase do estudo encontra-se em avaliar as dificuldades de se implementar estratégias corporativas através de projetos e a forma com a qual um escritório de gerenciamento de projetos pode, de forma prática, contribuir em processos de formação de portfólio de projetos dentro dos processos de planejamento estratégico e orçamentário das organizações. Como estratégia da pesquisa, foi desenvolvida uma revisão da literatura relacionada aos processos de planejamento estratégico e orçamentário, gestão de portfólio de projetos e das estruturas especialistas conhecidas na literatura especializada como escritórios de gerenciamento de projetos. Desta revisão estabelece-se um modelo de proposição teórica para a inserção de escritório de gerenciamento de projetos em contextos estratégicos. Em um estudo de caso, o trabalho apresenta a comparação dos principais elementos de referência da teoria com as evidências identificadas na prática. A realidade, neste particular contexto, propiciou a validação da aplicabilidade de alguns instrumentos disponíveis e as dificuldades de aplicação dos mesmos, permitindo confirmar a validade teórica do modelo proposto sob vários aspectos. Neste trabalho fez-se também o uso intensivo de conceitos da Cibernética organizacional e do modelo do VSM (Viable System Model), proposto por Stafford Beer. O VSM foi utilizado principalmente como ferramenta de análise e enquadramento do modelo teórico proposto com as evidências do estudo de caso. Muitos dos aspectos, problemas e relações causais apresentados no estudo de caso puderam ser avaliados de forma prática e demonstraram-se coerentes com a proposta de que os problemas de desempenho verificados nas organizações podem ser analisados sob a perspectiva da violação de algum princípio da Cibernética. / The current work presents a study over the positioning possibilities of project management offices in the organization\'s strategic environment. The emphasis of this study is on the assessment of the implementations difficulties of the strategies through projects and how a project management office can contribute to reduce these difficulties by supporting project portfolio selection under corporate strategic planning and budgeting processes. As a research strategy, a literature review was developed covering corporate strategic planning and budgeting processes, project portfolio management as well specialist organizational structures known as project management office. From this review, it was built a theory model proposition for project management office insertion on the corporate strategic environment. Through case study analysis, it is submited conclusions obtained from theory review against the identified practical evidences. In this particular research it was possible identify the applicability and difficulties of some available instruments and the proposed theory model was validated under many aspects. In addition, it was made an intensive use of concepts from the organizational Cybernetics\' theory and the viable system model - VSM, proposed by Stafford Beer. The VSM was useful as holistic analysis tool to categorize the proposed theory models against the evidences identified in the case study. Many aspects, problems and causal relationships presented in the case study were assessed in a practical way and proved consistency with the proposal that organizational performance problems could be analyzed under the perspective of some Cybernetic\'s principies violation.
