The remains of First Street : phosphate testing and archaeological excavation at the James F. D. Lanier State Historic Site in Madison, IndianaFeldhues, William J. January 1998 (has links)
Archaeological investigations rarely focus on streets and street related features. This thesis adds to the literature on this topic by discussing the archaeological excavation of the James F.D. Lanier State Historic Site. The excavation explored the integrity of First Street and its related components. Phosphate testing was also utilized to aid the identification of early street surfaces. The excavation revealed massive disturbance of the street due to landscaping activities. Possible street surfaces as well as intact features such as a section of concrete, streetside rain gutter, brick sidewalk, and fence base stones revealed that not all was destroyed. / Department of Anthropology

This essay examines how the organization and size of the mansion household changed atGarpenberg’s mansion between 1800-1899, in the terms of servants, their occupation and wherefrom they were recruited. This has been done by using catechetical lengths as the primary source.By looking at which types of servants that worked within the mansion, and how the structurechanged, this study tries to answer how the organization and size of the mansion household changedduring the 19th century. This survey has shown that the total amount of servants at Garpenberg’smansion increased during the time period, but the mansion household itself remained relativelyconstant throughout the century. In addition, more servants began to form their own households andwere partly no longer dependent of the gentry that owned the mansion.

This thesis investigated the possibilities to resume cultivation of an old manor house built of timber and what this would mean from an energy and moisture perspective. The building in this case study is named Sofiedals mansion and was built in 1858 in Valbo 11 kilometers west of Gävle. The structure of the house was documented and used as a starting-point for carrying out calculations focused on energy and moisture aspects. With the help of a number of computer programs and a conducted air tightness test, the buildings energy consumption were calculated and compared with the current building regulations. In addition, the building was analyzed considering energy retrofitting and what it meant for moisture problems. The energy retrofitting consisted of additional insulation, decreasing the buildings permeability through air sealing; window and door replacements. When a building is equipped with natural ventilation it is difficult to know its precise performance and how an energy retrofitting affects it. Therefore a sensitivity-analysis was performed on four different types of ventilation performance and how they affected the buildings energy as well as its building components moisture performance. The proposed suggestion for an energy retrofitting was made with a potential buyer in mind. Therefore general problems have been documented to demonstrate other measures to be taken into consideration when cultivating the building. The investigation showed that the buildings energy consumption needs to be reduced by approximately 45% to achieve the goal of Swedens current building regulations. Depending on the presumed ventilation performance, the energy consumption and moisture content in the building components varied. The conducted sensitivity analysis showed that a vapour barrier is required to make the building safe from moisture problems. In order to achieve the building regulations energy demands a specific energy consumption of 110kWh/m 2 each year was required. Currently the building does not meet these requirements and needs to undergo an extensive retrofitting.

Searching for Unmarked Graves at Historic Carter Mansion, Elizabethton, TNWhite, Heather, Ernenwein, Eileen G 07 April 2022 (has links)
Carter Mansion is a well-known historic site in Tennessee. It is estimated to have been built in the 1770s and is believed to be the oldest frame house, a house with a wooden skeleton for the base, in the state. This house was built by John and Landon Carter, father, and son respectively, who were well known influential leaders of the Watauga Settlement in the late 18th century. Prior to their arrival, the area was home to Native Americans. The aim of this research was to perform a geophysical survey of a previously unresearched area of the site, providing guidance for future development of the property. A ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey was conducted with a GSSI SIR4000 with 400 MHz antennas. Previous research was able to identify both historic and prehistoric graves in other areas of the property. This project extends this knowledge and aims to determine if there are graves associated with the headstones of the Carters on the eastern margin of the property, thus enriching the history and prehistory of the site without disturbing the grounds.

The Lord and her ladychip : A gender analysisSerrate, Henrietta January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to study the gender system and structures for a married couple in the late 1900-centery in the southern part of Sweden. More precisely the gender system of the lord Joseph Stephens and his wife the lady of the castle Elisabeth Stephens that lived in Huseby mansion during this time. I attend to do a qualitative textual analysis of the couple's correspondence from 1880-1900. I will interpret the results based on a theory of gender and gender division between the genders and the concepts of the private and the public sphere for the two genders. The results shows that the couple for most of the time has a gender based division between themselves were Elisabeth attempts to the privatesphere and Joseph for the public. Joseph does not involve Elisabeth with the operation of the estate or with his political duties. The way they appeals to each other can also implie that Joseph is superior to Elisabeth. The couple has also embraced the bourgeois ideal of love that means togetherness and exclusiveness in the relationship. But the result also shows that the division is not that fixed for the man in the relationship. Joseph can also enter the private and the female sphere which can implie that he is in control of the gender relationship and thinks that this is the best way to make sure the gender roles are kept safe which also will secure his superior position.

The garden enables one to approach dwelling places and landscapes as well as society of the Ancient Régime. During the Grand Siècle, three generations of the Espinose family and their relations, whether the latter are descended from the bourgeoisie or the nobility, have put their stamp on gardens in town or in the countryside in the eastern part of ancient Brittany. These enclosed areas have tried to meet at best the logical requirements of their environment. Whether in town or in the countryside, the garden of the estate met aesthetic, social, economic and technical requirements. And as the cornerstone of the landed property and its management, the garden also reflects an evolution in tastes, and therefore is liable to mutations. The marks of time and the status of the owners are apparent, with obvious signs of the prestige and/or the difficulties of the family. Thus the garden as a place where to take walks or grow flowers and plants is the expression of a knowledge as well as of a social status.

Les hôtels particuliers dijonnais de 1610 à 1715 / The private mansions in Dijon from 1610 to 1715Botté, Agnès 14 May 2011 (has links)
In the seventeenth century, Dijon, capital of the province, was the place where proposed members of the political, administrative and financial bodies chose to live. The city therefore experienced a remarkable boom in the construction of private residences. The builders were mainly officers of the sovereign courts, members of parliament or advisors to the Board of Auditors who wanted to satisfy their need for social representation by ordering houses worthy of their rank : the private mansion was the illustration of people of power, place both a demonstration of social standing, architectural and artistic. This study, the first synthesis of the private mansions of Dijon from 1610 to 1715, is approached according to three lines of thought: the commissioners, the architects and their constructions. The architectural analysis of mansions which leaves a large part to the distribution, allows the comparison with Paris and other major cities of the parliamentary kingdom.
