Carbon and nitrogen cycling in permeable continental shelf sediments and porewater solute exchange across the sediment-water interfaceRao, Alexandra Mina Fernandes 17 November 2006 (has links)
Continental margin sediments play an important role in marine biogeochemical cycles, partly due to high primary production rates and efficient export of organic matter to sediments in margin environments. This thesis presents studies of solute exchange in fine-grained sediments representative of slope and rise environments, and carbon and nitrogen cycling in sandy sediments dominant in continental shelves worldwide. Results of these studies advance understanding of the role of benthic processes on marine ecosystems.
In fine-grained sediments, solute exchange by diffusion, biological mixing and bioirrigation can be quantified using in situ flux chambers with inert tracer additions. Mechanistic models of chamber tracer transport across the seabed indicate that in organic-rich sediments, bioirrigation and mixing dominate over a wide range of bottom water oxygen levels, reflecting the patchiness and versatility of benthic macrofaunal communities. Positive correlations between benthic oxygen and tracer fluxes appear site-specific. Reliable chamber volume estimates derived from mechanistic models reveal that empirical fits to chamber tracer datasets may overestimate chamber volume and benthic solute fluxes.
The biogeochemistry of sandy, highly permeable sediments that dominate continental shelves is largely unknown because of the difficulty in sampling and studying them under natural conditions. Novel sediment reactors were developed and used to mimic in situ porewater advection and natural sedimentary conditions. Compositional changes of natural seawater, with and without the addition of

Impact Of Energy Quantization On Single Electron Transistor Devices And CircuitsDan, Surya Shankar 03 1900 (has links)
Although scalingof CMOS technology has been predicted to continue for another decade, novel technological solutions are required to overcome the fundamental limitations of the decananometer MOS transistors. Single Electron Transistor (SET) has attracted attention mainly because of its unique Coulomb blockade oscillations characteristics, ultra low power dissipation and nanoscale feature size. Despite the high potential, due to some intrinsic limitations (e.g., very low current drive) it will be very difficult for SET to compete head-to-head with CMOS’s large-scale infrastructure, proven design methodologies, and economic predictability. Nevertheless, the characteristics of SET and MOS transistors are quite complementary. SET advocates low-power consumption and new functionality (related to the Coulomb blockade oscillations), while CMOS has advantages like high-speed driving and voltage gain that can compensate the intrinsic drawbacks of SET. Therefore, although a complete replacement of CMOS by single-electronics is unlikely in the near future, it is also true that combining SET and CMOS one can bring out new functionalities, which are unmirrored in pure CMOS technology. As the hybridization of CMOSand SET is gaining popularity, silicon SETs are appearing to be more promising than metallic SETs for their possible integration with CMOS. SETs are normally studied on the basis of the classical Orthodox Theory, where quantization of energy states in the island is completely ignored. Though this assumption greatly simplifies the physics involved, it is valid only when the SET is made of metallic island. As one cannot neglect the quantization of energy states in a semi conductive island, it is extremely important to study the effects of energy quantization on hybrid CMOSSET integrated circuits. The main objectives of this thesis are: (1) understand energy quantization effects on SET by numerical simulations; (2) develop simple analytical models that can capture the energy quantization effects; (3)analyze the effects of energy quantization on SET logic inverter, and finally; (4)developa CAD framework for CMOS-SETco-simulation and to study the effects of energy quantization on hybrid circuits using that framework.
In this work the widely accepted SIMON Monte Carlo (MC) simulator for single electron devices and circuits is used to study the effects of energy quantization. So far SIMON has been used to study SETs having metallic island. In this work, for the first time, we have shown how one can use SIMON to analyze SET island properties having discrete energy states. It is shown that energy quantization mainly changes the Coulomb Blockade region and drain current of SET devices and thus affects the noise margin, power dissipation, and the propagation delay of SET logic inverter. Anew model for the noise margin of SET inverter is proposed, which includes the energy quantization term. Using the noise margin as a metric, the robustness of SET inverter is studied against the effects of energy quantization. An analytical expression is developed, which explicitly defines the maximum energy quantization (termedas “Quantization Threshold”)that an SET inverter logic circuit can withstand before its noise margin upper bound crosses the acceptable tolerance limit. It is found that SET inverter designed with CT : CG =0.366 (where CT and CG are tunnel junction and gate capacitances respectively) offers maximum robustness against energy quantization. Then the effects of energy quantization are studied for Current biased SET (CBS), which is an integral part of almost all hybrid CMOS-SET circuits. It is demonstrated that energy quantization has no impact on the gain of the CBS characteristics though it changes the output voltage levels and oscillation periodicity. The effects of energy quantization are further studied for two circuits: Negative Differential Resistance (NDR) and Neurone Cell, which use CBS. A new model for the conductance of NDR characteristics is also formulated that includes the energy quantization term. A novel CAD framework is then developed for CMOS-SET co-simulation, whichuses MCsimulator for SET devices alongwithconventional SPICE. Using this framework, the effects of energy quantization are studied for some hybrid circuits, namely, SETMOS, multiband voltage filter, and multiple valued logic circuits. It is found that energy quantization degrades the performance of hybrid circuit, which could be compensated by properly tuning the bias current of SET devices. Though this study is primarily done by exhaustive MC simulation, effort has also been put to develop first order compact model for SET that includes energy quantization effects. Finally it has been demonstrated that the SET behavior under energy quantization can be predicted byslightlymodifyingthe existing SETcompact models that are valid for metallic devices having continuous energy states.

Learning Algorithms Using Chance-Constrained ProgramsJagarlapudi, Saketha Nath 07 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores Chance-Constrained Programming (CCP) in the context of learning. It is shown that chance-constraint approaches lead to improved algorithms for three important learning problems — classification with specified error rates, large dataset classification and Ordinal Regression (OR). Using moments of training data, the CCPs are posed as Second Order Cone Programs (SOCPs). Novel iterative algorithms for solving the resulting SOCPs are also derived. Borrowing ideas from robust optimization theory, the proposed formulations are made robust to moment estimation errors.
A maximum margin classifier with specified false positive and false negative rates is derived. The key idea is to employ chance-constraints for each class which imply that the actual misclassification rates do not exceed the specified. The formulation is applied to the case of biased classification.
The problems of large dataset classification and ordinal regression are addressed by deriving formulations which employ chance-constraints for clusters in training data rather than constraints for each data point. Since the number of clusters can be substantially smaller than the number of data points, the resulting formulation size and number of inequalities are very small. Hence the formulations scale well to large datasets.
The scalable classification and OR formulations are extended to feature spaces and the kernelized duals turn out to be instances of SOCPs with a single cone constraint. Exploiting this speciality, fast iterative solvers which outperform generic SOCP solvers, are proposed. Compared to state-of-the-art learners, the proposed algorithms achieve a speed up as high as 10000 times, when the specialized SOCP solvers are employed.
The proposed formulations involve second order moments of data and hence are susceptible to moment estimation errors. A generic way of making the formulations robust to such estimation errors is illustrated. Two novel confidence sets for moments are derived and it is shown that when either of the confidence sets are employed, the robust formulations also yield SOCPs.

One of the fundamental criticisms levelled at the ECtHR review mechanism relates to the fact that it is jeopardizing State's sovereignty. According to some commentators the State's constitutional autonomy, untill recently strictly preserved under international law, is now questioned as a result of the international protection of human rights. This study aims to identify the link between the principle of State sovereignty, the guarantee of the electoral rights, and the role of the ECtHR. Our study will be divided into three chapters. Chapter l, "Progressive evolution of the principle of State sovereignty and the European mechanism for the protection of fundamental human rights", discusses the principle of State sovereignty and its interpretations in contemporary international law. The chapter traces the evolution of the principle and links it with the progressive development of fundamental human rights. Chapter II, "The interaction between the State's margin of appreciation and the European supervisory mechanism", considers what role the positive obligations of States may have played in the crystallization of States' attitudes towards the application of international human rights instruments. After a brief discussion of the doctrine of the margin of appreciation and States' obligations under the European Convention, the chapter focuses on the ECtHR's control and supervision of the States' electoral restrictions. Chapter III, "Electoral restrictions and the scope of limits imposed on the State sovereignty", is central to our study. This chapter examines the ECtHR case-Iaw on electoral rights (1987-2008) and draws attention to some electoral restrictions in legislative, administrative and judicial matters. This study looks at the challenges which surround the application of the right to free elections, focusing on electoral rights in national political discourse, and the development of the ECtHR's enhanced role in protecting electoral rights in Europe. It draws conclusions as to the relationships between the development of an effective protection of electoral rights and the resultant limitations to the State sovereignty.

Shallow gas hazards in Queen Charlotte Basin from interpretation of high resolution seismic and multibeam dataHalliday, Julie 30 December 2008 (has links)
This thesis investigates shallow gas hazards in Queen Charlotte Basin, a sedimentary basin situated offshore British Columbia. The work presented here provides the first detailed gas hazard assessment in Queen Charlotte Basin and the first evidence that gas has migrated from basin sediments into surficial sediments to be expelled in the water column.
A unique method of geophysical surveying is used to investigate hazards due to shallow gas at two sites within Queen Charlotte Basin: high-resolution multichannel seismic, Huntec Deep-Towed Seismic and multibeam bathymetry data were collected over two 2-D grids and interpreted concurrently to yield a comprehensive understanding of the geology at each site. Numerous features related to both ice-cover and shallow gas has been identified. Pockmarks, iceberg ploughmarks and seafloor mounds are observed in the multibeam data; acoustically turbid and vertical blank zones are imaged in the Huntec data and faulted anticlines containing bright spots as well as low frequency shadow zones are seen in the multichannel data.
Combining and interpreting all three geophysical datasets concurrently provided the means to discriminate features related to ice-cover from features related to gas in the shallow sediments. In addition, this method of geohazards assessment has enabled links between surficial and basin geology to be made. Based on the results obtained gas and other geohazards were identified at each of the two sites. Based on observations in high-resolution multichannel seismic data, gas is determined to have migrated along structural pathways within basin sediments and into surficial sediments. The level of hazard posed by shallow gas has been assessed qualitatively for each of the two study sites and gas hazard regions have been identified elsewhere in Queen Charlotte Basin.

Essays on trade integration and firm dynamicsBuono, Inés 29 October 2008 (has links)
This thesis deals with the integration of firms into export markets when trade barriers decrease. It consists in three chapters. The first chapter focuses on how cross-industry differences in factor intensities and within-industry differences in firm productivity shape the response of the extensive (the decision to export) and the intensive (the exported volumes) margin of export. The context of the analysis is the entry of Turkey into the European Customs Union in 1996. Results suggest that the extensive margin reacted more in labor-intensive sectors. In the second chapter we use a gravity approach to analyze how the decrease in tariffs promoted during the '90s by the Uruguay Round multilateral agreement affected trade margins for French firms. We find that the tariffs significantly affect trade only through the extensive margin. The third chapter describes the dynamic of firms' export to different countries and uncovers eleven new stylized facts on firm-level trade.
