The effects of massage therapy on delayed-onset muscle soreness after unaccustomed exercise for healthy, sedentary adults

Finkelstein, Neal B. 12 January 1993 (has links)
This study examined the effects of massage therapy on delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) following unaccustomed exercise in healthy, sedentary adults. Fifteen volunteers between the ages of 23 and 63 performed 100 calf raises followed by 15 minutes of rest. After the rest period, one leg was randomly assigned to receive a 5-minute massage while the other leg received a 5-minute placebo ultrasound treatment. A questionnaire was administered to evaluate DOMS at 24, 48, and 72 hour posttreatment intervals when DOMS reportedly is at its peak. A double blind control was employed so that the examiner was unaware as to which treatments were performed on each leg. A t-test for nonindependent samples was used with significance set at the 0.05 level. There was less DOMS reported in the massaged leg at each interval, however, only a significant reduction in DOMS was reported at the 24 hour posttreatment interval.

The Effects of Instrument-Assisted Cross Fiber Massage on Ligament Healing

Loghmani, Mary T. 21 July 2010 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Ligament injury is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorders that may lead to disability or disease, such as osteoarthritis. Conservative interventions which accelerate or augment ligament healing are needed to enhance therapeutic outcomes. The purpose of this research agenda was to investigate the tissue level effects of a type of manual therapy, cross fiber massage (CFM), in particular instrument-assisted CFM (IACFM), on ligament healing. Bilateral knee medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries were created using an established rodent model where one MCL received IACFM treatment and the other untreated MCL served as a within subjects control. The short and long term effects of IACFM on the biomechanical and histological properties of repairing ligaments were investigated. Tensile mechanical testing was performed to determine ligament mechanical properties. Ligament histology was examined under light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. IACFM was found to accelerate early ligament healing (4 weeks post-injury), possibly via favorable effects on collagen formation and organization, but minimal improvement was demonstrated in later healing (12 weeks post-injury). Regional blood flow and angiogenesis were investigated as possible mechanisms underlying the accelerated healing found in IACFM-treated ligaments. Laser Doppler perfusion imaging was used to investigate vascular function. Micro-computed tomography was used to determine vascular structural parameters. Compared to untreated contralateral injured controls, IACFM-treated injured knees demonstrated a delayed increase in blood flow and altered microvascular structure, possibly suggesting angiogenesis. Mechanotransduction is discussed as a mechanism for the beneficial effects of CFM in that application of a mechanical force was found to enhance biomechanical and histological properties as well as vascular function and structure acutely in healing ligaments. Although this thesis focused on IACFM treatment of injured knee ligaments, it is plausible for concepts to apply to other manual modalities that offer conservative alternatives to invasive procedures or pharmaceuticals in the treatment of soft tissue injuries.

Beröringens betydelse för upplevt lugn : Känsla av upplevt lugn hos massageterapeuter / The significance of skin on skin contact for perceived calmness : The sense of perceived calm in massage therapists after giving massage

O'Keefe, Tara January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine how perceived levels of stress are affected by skin on skin contact during and after giving massage. The study is limited to licensed massage therapists within Swedish massage, where the therapists’ hands are in contact with the clients’ skin during the entire massage. A questionnaire was specifically designed to investigate with the objective to measure the experienced levels of stress during and after giving massage. The questionnaire was answered by 78 certified massage therapists across Sweden. The results show that the perceived level of stress was lower during and shortly after having given massage, than after 12 and 24 hours respectively. With more time passing since the massage was administered, the level of stress increased. A majority (73 percent) of the massage therapists stated that they experienced reduced levels of stress and increased level of calmness during and after giving the massage treatment. A one-way ANOVA test showed that the longer time that passed after giving the massage, the higher levels of stress was reported. The reported level of stress directly after giving massage compared to 24 hours later showed significant difference. While the reported level of stress during and directly after giving massage did not show a significant difference. An independent two-tailed T-test demonstrates that there was a statistically significant difference immediately after giving massage and 24 hours after. Meaning that there is a 0,1 percent risk that the perceived levels of stress (sense of calmness) is a result of random factors.

Massage och dess effekt på smärta hos patienter med cancer : En litteraturöversikt / The effect of massage on pain in patients with cancer.

Olofsson, Charlotte, Sjöberg, Diana January 2019 (has links)
Background: Cancer is a disease often associated with pain, which can be caused by the tumors but also by the different treatments and medical examinations the patients must endure. Massage has been utilized for many years to relieve pain and has lately been introduced in the care of patients with cancer. Aim: To describe how massage can be used to relieve pain in patients with cancer and also the emerged effects. Methods: The study has been designed as a literature review consisting of 17 qualitative and quantitative articles. Data was collected in the databases CINAHL and PubMed. Results: Several studies proved a statistically significant decrease in pain after a massage intervention. Even though the short-term effect was more prominent some studies indicated that the massage intervention could have an enduring effect as well. In those studies where statistical significance couldn’t be measured, yet a trend could be seen that pain was reduced. Conclusion: Massage may have beneficial effects on pain among patients with cancer. It could be considered for pain relief as a complement to pharmacological treatment.
