Some scattering and sloshing problems in linear water wave theory

Using the method of matched asymptotic expansions the reflection and transmission coefficients are calculated for scattering of oblique water waves by a vertical barrier. Here an assumption is made that the barrier is small compared to the wavelength and the depth of water. A number of sloshing problems are considered. The eigenfrequencies are calculated when a body is placed in a rectangular tank. Here the bodies considered are a vertical surface-piercing or bottom-mounted barrier, and circular and elliptic cylinders. When the body is a vertical barrier, the eigenfunction expansion method is applied. When the body is either a circular or elliptic cylinder, and the motion is two-dimensional, the boundary element method is applied to calculate the eigenfrequencies. For comparison, two approximations, "a wide-spacing", and "a small-body" are used for a vertical barrier and circular cylinder. In the wide-spacing approximation, the assumption is made that the wavelength is small compared with the distance between the body and walls. The small-body approximation means that a typical dimension of the body is much larger than the cross-sectional length scale of the fluid motion. For an elliptic cylinder, the method of matched asymptotic expansions is used and compared with the result of the boundary- element method. Also a higher-order solution is obtained using the method of matched asymptotic expansions, and it is compared with the exact solution for a surface-piercing barrier. Again the assumption is made that the length scale of the motion is much larger than a typical body dimension. Finally, the drift force on multiple bodies is considered the ratio of horizontal drift force in the direction of wave advance on two cylinders to that on an isolated cylinder is calculated. The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used under the assumption that the wavelength is much greater than the cylinder spacing.

Symbol Synchronization For Msk Signals Based On Matched Filtering

In this thesis, symbol timing recovery in MSK signals is investigated making use of matched filtering. A decision-directed symbol synchronizer cascaded with an MLSE receiver is proposed for fine timing. Correlation (matched filter) method is used to recover the timing epoch from the tentative decisions obtained from the Viterbi algorithm. The fractional delays are acquired using interpolation and an iterative maximum search process. In order to investigate the tracking performance of the proposed symbol synchronizer, a study is carried out on three possible optimum timing phase criteria: (i) Mazo criterion, (ii) the minimum squared ISI criterion (msISI), and (iii) the minimum BER criterion. Moreover, a discussion is given about the timing sensitivity of the MLSE receiver. The performance of the symbol synchronizer is assessed by computer simulations. It is observed that the proposed synchronizer tracks the variations of the channels almost the same as the msISI criterion. The proposed method eliminates the cycle slips very succesfully and is robust to frequency-selective multipath fading channel conditions even in moderate signal-to-noise ratios.

High Order Finite Difference Methods with Artificial Boundary Treatment in Quantum Dynamics

The investigation of the dynamics of chemical reactions, both from the theoretical and experimental side, has drawn an increasing interest since Ahmed H. Zewail was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on femtochemistry. On the experimental side, new techniques such as femtosecond lasers and attosecond lasers enable laser control of chemical reactions. Numerical simulations serve as a valuable complement to experimental techniques, not only for validation of experimental results, but also for simulation of processes that cannot be investigated through experiments. With increasing computer capacity, more and more physical phenomena fall within the range of what is possible to simulate. Also, the development of new, efficient numerical methods further increases the possibilities. The focus of this thesis is twofold; numerical methods for chemical reactions including dissociative states and methods that can deal with coexistence of spatial regions with very different physical properties. Dissociative chemical reactions are reactions where molecules break up into smaller components. The dissociation can occur spontaneously, e.g. by radioactive decay, or be induced by adding energy to the system, e.g. in terms of a laser field. Quantities of interest can for instance be the reaction probabilities of possible chemical reactions. This thesis discusses a boundary treatment model based on the perfectly matched layer (PML) approach to accurately describe dynamics of chemical reactions including dissociative states. The limitations of the method are investigated and errors introduced by the PML are quantified. The ability of a numerical method to adapt to different scales is important in the study of more complex chemical systems. One application of interest is long-range molecules, where the atoms are affected by chemical attractive forces that lead to fast movement in the region where they are close to each other and exhibits a relative motion of the atoms that is very slow in the long-range region. A numerical method that allows for spatial adaptivity is presented, based on the summation-by-parts-simultaneous approximation term (SBP-SAT) methodology. The narrow escape problem : a matched asymptotic expansion approach

We consider the motion of a Brownian particle trapped in an arbitrary bounded two or three-dimensional domain, whose boundary is reflecting except for a small absorbing window through which the particle can escape. We use the method of matched asymptotic expansions to calculate the mean first passage time, defined as the time taken for the Brownian particle to escape from the domain through the absorbing window. This is known as the narrow escape problem. Since the mean escape time diverges as the window shrinks, the calculation is a singular perturbation problem. We extend our results to include N absorbing windows of varying length in two dimensions and varying radius in three dimensions. We present findings in two dimensions for the unit disk, unit square and ellipse and in three dimensions for the unit sphere. The narrow escape problem has various applications in many fields including finance, biology, and statistical mechanics.

Attityder till religiösa personbenämningar

I denna studie kombineras språkvetenskap och religionsvetenskap i syfte att undersöka studenters undermedvetna språkattityder till tre religiösa personbenämningar: muslim(er), hindu(er) och kristen(-na). Deltagarna består av studenter över hela Sverige och majoriteten har könsidentitet kvinna samt är i åldern 15-25 år. Deltagarnas språkattityder undersöks genom en enkätundersökning med ett matched guise-test och semantisk differential. Resultaten tyder på att personbenämningen kristen(-na) ger upphov till fler negativa konnotationer än framförallt muslim(er) men även hindu(er). Muslimer rankas exempelvis som mer hänsynsfulla och intelligenta än kristna. Hinduer rankas exempelvis som mjuka medan kristna exempelvis rankas som mer dumma än hinduer och muslimer samtidigt som de rankas som hänsynsfulla och sympatiska. Attityderna till dessa tre personbenämningar verkar med andra ord följa ett trestegsmönster där personbenämningen muslim(er) skapar flest positiva konnotationer, tätt följd av hindu(er) och sist personbenämningen kristen(-na) som skapar positiva och negativa konnotationer.

Flow and nutrient transport problems in rotating bioreactor systems

Motivated by applications in tissue engineering, this thesis is concerned with the flow through and around a free-moving porous tissue construct (TC) within a high-aspect-ratio vessel (HARV) bioreactor. We formalise and extend various results for flow within a Hele-Shaw cell containing a porous obstacle. We also consider the impact of the flow on related nutrient transport problems. The HARV bioreactor is a cylinder with circular cross-section which rotates about its axis at a constant rate, and is filled with a nutrient-rich culture medium. The porous TC is modelled as a rigid porous cylinder with circular cross-section and is fully saturated with the fluid. We formulate the flow problem for a porous TC (governed by Darcy's equations) within a HARV bioreactor (governed by the Navier-Stokes equations). We couple the two regions via appropriate interfacial conditions which are derived by consideration of the intricate boundary-layer structure close to the TC surface. By exploiting various small parameters, we simplify the system of equations by performing an asymptotic analysis, and investigate the resulting system for the flow due to a prescribed TC motion. The motion of the TC is determined by analysis of the force and torque acting upon it, and the resulting equations of motion (which are coupled to the flow) are investigated. The short-time TC behaviour is periodic, but we are able to study the long-time drift from this periodic solution by considering the effect of inertia using a multiple-scale analysis. We find that, contrary to received wisdom, inertia affects TC drift on a similar timescale to tissue growth. Finally, we consider the advection of nutrient through the bioreactor and TC, and investigate the problem of nutrient advection-diffusion for a simplified model involving nutrient uptake.

Cette thèse est consacrée à l'étude de l'influence d'une fine couche hétérogène sur le comportement élastique linéaire d'une structure tridimensionnelle.Deux types d'hétérogénéités sont pris en compte : des cavités et des inclusions élastiques. Une étude complémentaire, dans le cas d'inclusions de grande rigidité, a été réalisée en considérant un problème de conduction thermique.Une analyse formelle par la méthode des développements asymptotiques raccordés conduit à un problème d'interface qui caractérise le comportement macroscopique de la structure. Le comportement microscopique de la couche est lui déterminé sur une cellule de base. Le modèle asymptotique obtenu est ensuite implémenté dans un code éléments finis. Une étude numérique permet de valider les résultats de l'analyse asymptotique. / This thesis is devoted to the study of the influence of a thin heterogeneous layeron the linear elastic behavior of a three-dimensional structure. Two types of heterogeneties are considered : cavities and elastic inclusions. For inclusions of high rigidty a further study was performed in the case of a heat conduction problem.A formal analysis using the matched asymptotic expansions method leads to an interface problem which characterizes the macroscopic behavior of the structure. The microscopic behavior of the layer is determined in a basic cell.The asymptotic model obtained is then implemented in a finite element software.A numerical study is used to validate the results of the asymptotic analysis.

This essay investigated Swedish teenagers' attitudes towards Australian and British English accents. The respondents were exposed to four different accents as part of a modified version of the Matched Guise Technique. They were then asked to fill out a questionnaire assessing the accents in terms of psychological qualities, social evaluation, job suitability and likability. The results show that previous research on attitudes to accents in other countries is applicable on Swedish teenagers' and that stereotyping is an influence as well.

Föreställningar kring talspråk i förorten : En attitydundersökning av och bland flerspråkiga ungdomar

Detta arbete undersöker hur ungdomar i en Stockholmsförort uppfattar tio olika talprov från fem olika talare (matched guise). Jag har låtit genomföra en enkätundersökning följt av en gruppdiskussion för att få reda hur ungdomarna uppfattar de olika talproven. Studien är inspirerad av Bijvoet och Frauruds SALAM-studie. Slutsatsen är att såväl talare som respondenter i den aktuella studien har en hög grad av sociolingvistisk medvetenhet. Resultatet i gruppdiskussionen visade att tjejer gärna får ha ett mer standardspråksnära uttal medan killar som pratar för ”rent” kan dömas som ”bögig” eller ”svennig” dvs. ett distanserande från ”orten”. Paradoxalt nog fanns det finns en rädsla att dömas utifrån sitt sätt att tala.
