Essays in the Political Economy of Information

Cage, Julia 06 June 2014 (has links)
The primary focus of this dissertation is on information, its production and dissemination in society. In the first chapter, I explore the consequences of an increase in the number of newspapers on the quantity and quality of news provided and, ultimately, changes in political participation, using a new panel of local newspaper presence and political turnout in France from 1945 to 2012. My results shed new light on the role played by consumers' heterogeneity and increasing returns to scale in news production, and have implications for the study of the relationship between media competition and political participation. / Economics

Factores que influencian la competencia mediática de las audiencias de mujeres streamers durante la pandemia del Covid-19 / Factors that influence media competence of female streamers audiences during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Párraga Chávez, Valeria Smilzinia 28 January 2022 (has links)
With the arrival of the pandemic, people of all ages have found an alternative in video games to distract themselves. Additionally, streaming (live streaming of game sessions) became a way to earn income from home. This type of content became part of the digital media diet of video game fans, who established a close relationship with streamers and generated different dynamics. Despite the implementation of rules regulating the behavior of streamers on platforms such as Twitch and Facebook, they are not able to control some irregularities, like monitoring negative comments or sexual innuendo during live streams. This has initiated various debates about the correct use of these media that gather people of all ages, from children to adults. In order to know consumers’ points of view, two focus groups were carried out in order to find out the factors that influence the media competence of female streamers’ audience. The study addresses two dimensions: languages and ideology and values. In the languages dimension, although women are aware of harassment, they consider that a person has freedom of behavior during a stream. Men, meanwhile, consider that the way women show themselves in front of the camera allows them to generate money. In the ideology and values dimension, women believe that a female streamer’s behavior should not be questioned or criticized as long as it respects the rules of the community. On the other hand, men consider that the rules are interpreted subjectively, but they are aware that without these practices, the Facebook Gaming platform would not have economic income / Tesis

Die Konstruktion von Lesekultur

Wetzel, Dirk Alexander 10 January 2002 (has links)
Taking as its starting point the short-comings of reading as a topic of research for social questions that reach beyond the didactic of learning to read, the present dissertation attempts to approach this subject from another vantage point. The focus of interest is not how many people read what subject matter, in what fashion, and why, but rather its opposite: How do social systems define 'reading', what persons are assigned the role of 'reader' and what are the motivations that this social distinction engenders or promotes. The theoretical foundation for the study is based on the Bielefeld school of systems theory as expounded by Niklas Luhmann. Through an analysis of editorial articles appearing over a period of forty years in the journals 'Börsenblatt für den Deutschen Buchhandel' and 'Buch und Bibliothek [Bücherei und Bildung]', the theoretical model is demonstrated by examples drawn from book-trade and the public library system. In the process it becomes apparent that the culture of reading as a product of a traditional system is fundamentally instrumentalized by the book-trade: inwards for the purpose of identity and market protection, outwards for the purpose of soliciting special national concessions, in particular in the area of antitrust law. In spite of its proximity to book-trade, the public library system all but failed to address reading culture in the decades of 1960s and 1970s and made use of other persuasive media as a means of system stabilization. Only after considerable budgetary cuts during the recession at the start of the 1980s did the public library system couple itself to the culture of reading as a medium of persuasion for soliciting state benefits.
